Parish Funerals:
Julia E. Morehouse died on October 30, 2023 at the age of 95. A funeral Mass was celebrated on November 10, 2023, at St. James the Apostle Church.

Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe:
This is the feast day we celebrate today. John 18:37: “So Pilate said to him, ‘Then you are a King?’ Jesus answered, ‘You say I am a king.’” Jesus is a king for those who freely accept him not as one who dominates but as one who serves. Truly, a different kind of king. This day is truly a joyful day for those who experience Jesus in his kingly manner.

Season of Advent:
Next Sunday, December 3, is the First Sunday of Advent.

The Word Among us Advent Booklet:
The booklet titled, The Word Among Us, is available in the foyer of the church. The booklet contains daily meditations for the Advent Season. Please take one for your home and for daily prayer.

Year of Parish Eucharistic Revival – the Mass:
Fr. Bernard will give a presentation on the Mass this coming Saturday, December 2, at 5:00 p.m. in the St. Francis Solanus Church Annex to deepen our understanding of the Eucharist and Mass – the Sacrifice of Christ’s Body and Blood instituted by Jesus. All are welcome. To reinvigorate worship is one of the invitations to parishes during this year of Parish Eucharistic Revival.

Catholic U Second Collection:
This weekend is the National Collection for The Catholic University of America. Catholic U offers courses in more than 180 academic programs. By giving to the National Collection, you will help support more than 6,000 students who are seeking a faith-filled education at an institution that supports cutting edge research in multiple fields. Your investment will enable the University to continue preparing the next generation of leadership, both religious and lay, of our Church and nation. Learn more at: collection.catholic.edu.

Christmas Flower Offering:
Next weekend is the annual Christmas Flower Offering collection. Your offerings help provide the beautiful flowers and decorations that adorn our three churches at Christmas each year.

Eucharistic Holy Hour – Encounter Night:
Spend time with Jesus in the Eucharist. Encounter Nights create the opportunity for a personal encounter with Our Lord. They are monthly opportunities to experience a powerful form of worship as a parish. The next Encounter Night will be Thursday, December 7, 6:30–7:30 p.m. at Holy Cross Church. For many in the parish it will mean making the sacrifice to travel. January’s Encounter Night will be at St. James the Apostle.

Jesus and the Eucharist Study:
The Word Committee of the Parish Council is planning a seven-session series on Jesus and the Eucharist sponsored by the National Eucharistic Revival. The goal is to have small study groups. Each session is video based containing a main lesson that includes personal testimonies from Catholics across the country. Besides the video, the session contains time for small group discussion.

Currently parishioners are being asked to consider being facilitators. That is, facilitators would set the day, time, and place convenient to themselves to show the video and lead the small group discussion. The more facilitators the parish has the more opportunities parishioners would have to participate in the study of Jesus and the Eucharist. Please notify the Parish Office if you are interested in being a facilitator and to participate in a training session.

Angel Tree Tags:
The Angel Trees are up at both St. Francis and Holy Cross for the Seneca County Community Christmas Project! If you take a child’s tag, gifts must be returned by Sunday, December 10th. Please do not wrap the gifts. Also, please include the tag information where it can easily be seen. If you would like to participate but would prefer not to take a tag, gift cards from Walmart are appreciated. If you have any questions, please contact Gerry Frank at 607–869–5009 or [email protected].

Volunteer for Trumansburg Food Pantry:
December 4 & 18 are our parish’s dates to provide volunteers for the Trumansburg Food Pantry. Sign-up sheets are provided in the foyers.

2023-2024 Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA):
As of November 15, 2023, sixty-one parish households have contributed to the CMA. We thank those who have given generously and ask all who have not yet given to prayerfully consider doing so. Participation in the Appeal is primary. What is pledged is secondary. The CMA helps our Church and our parish in many ways. Our given parish goal is $31,000. Our parish households have pledged $14,320 which is 46.19% of our goal.

Share the Warmth:
The Trumansburg Rotary Club is sponsoring a collection bin on the front porch of the St. James rectory as part of their Share the Warmth campaign that runs through early December. Share the Warmth accepts all winter clothing in good repair: coats, snow pants, boots, hats, scarves, gloves, mittens, etc. Blankets also are welcome. All donations should be new or gently used, and clean for future recipients. Thank you to all who participate in sharing the warmth this winter.

First Friday and First Saturday Devotion:
In response to parishioners’ inquiry regarding this devotion, a handout titled “How to Observe First Fridays and First Saturdays” has been placed in the foyers of the Church. Because of the times in which we live, this devotion is popular today.

Priesthood Vocation Awareness
A series of nine short videos has been produced by the Catholic Courier. These profile the current ministries and the vocational journeys of several of the priests of our diocese. They have all been uploaded to YouTube, and links are available at catholiccourier.com/priestlife/. The videos are of interest and informational for everyone’s viewing.

Donating to Your Parish:
Online giving by WeShare is safe, simple and convenient. It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3:

  2. Follow the directions under the “Donate Online” section.
  3. Set up your donation or payment.

That’s it! Your account will be created and you can put away your checkbook. If you experience any problem, please e-mail Eileen at [email protected].

Prayer Vigil for Peace:
All are welcome to gather to pray for peace on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 12:00–2:00 p.m. and on Thursdays 8:30–10:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, Trumansburg.

Seneca County Senior Center Events:

  • Tea and Talking: November 30; 1:00 p.m.

These events will take place at Verona Village in Ovid and are open to Seneca County residents 60 and older.

Programs at St. James the Apostle:
Sister Anne Alderman, SSJ facilitates three programs in the Pine Room at St. James the Apostle, Trumansburg.

  • Prayer for Healing and Harmony: On the 2nd and 4th Thursday at 7:00 p.m. and every Wednesday at 2:00 p.m., Sr. Anne leads a time of silent prayer. This provides an opportunity for personal reflection and healing. The session closes with a time to share any reflections that came to you. You do not need to attend every session.
  • The Taizé Prayer is facilitated on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month at 7:30 p.m. Taizé Prayer was developed by an ecumenical community of monks in Taizé, France. It consists of readings and prayers interspersed with quiet, repetitive songs—a good way to quiet your soul and psyche after a busy day.
  • Every Wednesday at 3:15 p.m., all are invited to participate in a book study. The current book is Wisdom Distilled from the Daily by Joan Chittiston.

Questions? Contact Sister Anne at 607-209-4206 or [email protected]

Family Hope Center:
The Family Hope Center has two locations: one in Geneva and a satellite location in Ovid in the Holy Cross Church Rectory. Family Hope Center fights for life by valuing life above all else. It means offering support through free pregnancy tests, a limited ultrasound referral, parenting and life skills classes, bible studies, material aid such as diapers and clothing, and through our forgiven and set free post abortion study. It means looking at our clients and saying, “I see your life; I value your life. I see and value your children’s lives. You are important and loved.” Women come to the Family Hope Center to be valued. The Pregnancy Care Center of the Finger Lakes is located at 551 Exchange St. in Geneva with an office in Ovid at 7231 Main St. “If you regret your abortion, you are not alone. Let us help you learn to forgive yourself.” To learn more visit familyhopecentergeneva.org, call 315–789–0708, text: 315-945-1019, or email [email protected].

Prayers for Our Parish:
The Sisters of St. Joseph have a prayer ministry for the Diocese of Rochester. Sister Anne Marie Burns and Sister Dolores Bachman will be praying for our parish and parishioners throughout 2023. We thank the Sisters for their thoughtfulness and kindness toward us. In our appreciation, please keep the Sisters of St. Joseph, especially Sisters Anne Marie and Dolores, in your thoughts and prayers.

Mass Intention Requests:
Those wishing to have someone remembered at a Mass may fill out a Mass Intentions Request form which is automatically submitted to the church office. You may also phone the parish office (607-294-0064) with your request or fill out one of the paper forms available in the foyer of each church and either mail it to the parish office or put it in the collection. There are several reasons why a person may ask a priest to offer a Mass for another individual: in thanksgiving; for the intentions of another person (such as on a birthday); or, as is most common, for the repose of the soul and in memory of someone who has died.

Sanctuary Lamp:
In Catholic Churches, a candle is always lit to indicate that the Blessed Sacrament is present in the church. This candle is called the “sanctuary lamp.” Every week the candle or oil is renewed. In many churches, people donate to the church for the sanctuary lamp be lit for the week for the intention of the donor. This has been the custom at Holy Cross Church, Ovid and is now extended to St. James the Apostle and St. Francis Solanus Churches. In making the donation simply put on the envelope, “donation for the sanctuary lamp” and specify the week and, if so desired, your intention.

Cancer Services Program (CSP):
Cortland and Tompkins Counties offer free cancer screenings to those who are uninsured or have health insurance that does not cover these screenings. The screening services are provided in local health centers, doctors’ offices, and hospitals. For more information, contact CSP at 866 442 2262.

Prayer Intentions:
Please feel free to add your prayer requests in the books available for that purpose in each church. The prayer requests of fellow parishioners are listed on the parish website (see PRAYERS in top bar). You may also add a request by emailing the parish at [email protected] or phoning the parish office at 607–294–0064 and it will be added to the list.

Let Us Pray: Please remember in your prayers those members of our parish who are in the hospital, sick at home, in a nursing home, or who have requested our prayers (see the list on the parish’s PRAYERS page). We also ask you to pray for those who have died. May the Lord bring comfort to their family and friends during this difficult time and may they find hope in the Resurrection.

Saturday Classes–Adult Inquiry & Confirmation Preparation:
Adults interested in knowing more about Jesus of Nazareth or interested in Catholicism or adults desiring to celebrate their first Communion and/or Confirmation, and students eighth grade and above who have not celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation, are invited to attend classes on Saturdays (with one exception: the second Saturday of the month) at 5:00–6:15 p.m. in the St. Francis Solanus Annex. November 18th is the next session. The topic: The Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist.

2023-2024 Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA):
The CMA is happening. The Appeal serves people in need; provides diocesan wide services to parishes and institutions; supports seminarians, Deacons, and Pastoral Leaders; educates the young in the Catholic faith; and funds the operation of diocesan office/ministries, etc. Our parish given goal is $31,000. As of November 1st, fifty-five parish households have pledged $13,805 which is 44.53% of our goal. Please participate in the Appeal. Participation is primary, what is pledged is secondary.

Volunteer for Trumansburg Food Pantry:
Mondays, November 20 and December 4 & 18, are our parish’s dates to provide volunteers for the Trumansburg Food Pantry. Sign-up sheets and descriptions of each task are provided in the foyers.

Collection Counters Needed:
Our parish desperately needs more Sunday collection counters at both St. James the Apostle and Holy Cross. Counters work in teams, and each team is only asked to count once every 3-4 weeks. The process of counting the collection takes 30-60 minutes. If you cannot commit to a regular schedule, consider volunteering as a substitute. Contact Susan Guydosh at [email protected] or phone our parish office. Many hands make light work; more volunteers lessen the burden on any one individual.

Vocation Awareness
A series of nine short videos has been produced by the Catholic Courier. These profile the current ministries and the vocational journeys of several of the priests of our diocese. They have all been uploaded to YouTube, and links are available at catholiccourier.com/priestlife/.

Donating to Your Parish:
Online giving by WeShare is safe, simple and convenient. It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3:

  1. Visit the parish website’s giving page: marymotherofmercy.com/giving
  2. Follow the directions under the “Donate Online” section.
  3. Set up your donation or payment.

That’s it! Your account will be created and you can put away your checkbook. If you experience any problem, please e-mail Eileen at [email protected].

William Murawski died on October 15, 2023 at the age of 85. A Funeral Mass was celebrated on October 19, 2023, at St. James the Apostle Church.

All Saints’ Day:
November 1st, Wednesday, is a holy day of obligation. It is the day the Church throughout the world rejoices in all the people, blest in the eyes of the Lord, who stand in God’s holy place and sing of the love the Father has bestowed upon them through the blood of the Lamb.

There will be two Masses:

  • 9:00 a.m. at St. James the Apostle, Trumansburg, and
  • 6:00 p.m. at Holy Cross, Ovid.

All Soul’s Day is November 2nd:
It is the day the Church commemorates all the faithful departed. It is the custom that the names of one’s beloved deceased be submitted to be remembered and prayed for on that day and throughout the month of November. Envelopes are available in the churches to record the names of those to be remembered and prayed for. The envelopes will remain on the altar for the month of November. On that day, at the 8:30 a.m. Mass, the names of all those whose burial took place through the ministry of the Parish of Mary, Mother of Mercy during the past year will be announced, and a candle will be lit in remembrance of them.

Cemeteries Collection:
This past July our parish initiated a monthly collection for the financial support of our two parish cemeteries. In keeping with the annual and monthly collection there will be a second collection next weekend for the cemeteries. As in the past please be as generous as your ability allows. Thank you.

Eucharistic Holy Hour – Encounter Night:
Spend time with Jesus in the Eucharist. Encounter nights create the opportunity for a personal encounter with Our Lord. They are monthly opportunities to experience a powerful form of worship as a parish. The next Encounter Night will be Thursday, November 2, 6:30–7:30 p.m. at St. Francis Solanus Church. For many in the parish it will mean making the sacrifice to travel. December’s Encounter Night will be at Holy Cross Church.

The session on November 4th is “Being sealed in the gift of the Holy Spirit” – the Sacrament of Confirmation.

Sweet Sunday:
Next Sunday, and the first Sunday of every month, parishioners are invited to a social time following the 9:00 a.m. Mass at St. James the Apostle, Trumansburg.

Trivia Night in November:

  • Prayer for Healing and Harmony meets on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month at 7:00 p.m. and every Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. This time of silent prayer provides an opportunity for personal reflection and healing. The session closes with a time to share any reflections that came to you.

Eucharistic Revival Encounter Nights:
This past June, our nation’s Catholics have entered the second year of the National Eucharist Revival. June 2023 – June 2024 is the “Year of Parish Revival”. Parishes are invited to have monthly Eucharistic Holy Hours and they are being referred to as “Encounter Nights.” The nights provide opportunities to gather in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament, listen to Sacred Scripture, observe a sacred silence for reflection, encounter Jesus in a personal way, and conclude with Benediction. We believe Jesus hears our prayers and because of that our prayers are powerful.

Parishioners, please plan to attend these monthly “Encounter Nights.” They will be on the first Thursday of the month and rotate between our three parish churches. The next “Encounter Night” will be November 2nd at St. Francis Solanus Church. Please make the travelling sacrifice to assure participation in these holy hours of adoration.

The Encounter Night held on October 5th at St. James the Apostle was well attended (30+). For one hour they were in the presence of the One who loves them and offers to serve them.

Saturday Classes – Adult Inquiry & Confirmation Preparation:
Adults interested in knowing more about Jesus of Nazareth or interested in Catholicism or adults desiring to celebrate their first Communion and/or Confirmation, and students eighth grade and above who have not celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation, are invited to attend classes on Saturdays (with one exception: the second Saturday of the month) at 5:00–6:15 p.m. in the St. Francis Solanus Annex.

Trivia Night in November:

World Mission Sunday:
Next weekend, we will unite with the global Church in celebrating World Mission Sunday. This year, Pope Francis illuminates our path with the theme: “Hearts on fire, feet on the move.” As we prepare to observe this special day, we are reminded to ignite our hearts with Christ’s love and extend that warmth to the most vulnerable corners of our world. Your fervent prayers and upcoming generosity in the collection for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith will bolster the missionaries working in Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and certain regions of Latin America and Europe. Let us come together to support them in their mission of love and service. Learn more at onefamilyinmission.org.

2023-2024 Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA):
Our Diocese of Rochester has launched the 2023-2024 Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA) to serve people in need; provide diocesan wide services to parishes and institutions; support seminarians, Deacons and Pastoral Leaders; educate the young in the Catholic faith; fund the operation of diocesan offices/ministries, etc. The CMA goal is $6,725,000. Our given parish goal is $31,000. As in the past, please participate in the Appeal. Participation is primary, what is pledged is secondary.

Parish Eucharistic Revival – June 2023–June 2024:
Every parish throughout the United States is inviting parishioners to:

  • Reinvigorate Worship by being faithful to the rubrics prescribed for the celebration of the Eucharistic Liturgy (Mass);
  • Provide monthly holy hour Encounter Nights to help parishioners personally encounter Jesus in the Eucharist;
  • Create a Faith Formation opportunity through a small group seven session study guide titled “Jesus and the Eucharist”; and
  • Launch an “Invite One Back” initiative, that is, reaching out to one who has abandoned the gift of Jesus himself, the Eucharist.

With the help of Patrick Miller, our Eucharistic Revival Parish Point Person, and the Parish Council, especially the Worship and Word Committees, our parish will begin to schedule, in October, events proposed for the Parish Eucharistic Revival.

Our first “Encounter Night” was Thursday, October 5th, from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. at St. James the Apostle Church, Trumansburg. The next “Encounter Night” will be November 2nd at St. Francis Solanus Church and December 7th at Holy Cross. Please make the travelling sacrifice to assure participation in these holy hours of adoration.

Parish Eucharistic Revival – June 2023–June 2024:
Every parish throughout the United States is inviting parishioners to:

  • Reinvigorate Worship by being faithful to the rubrics prescribed for the celebration of the Eucharistic Liturgy (Mass);
  • Provide monthly holy hour Encounter Nights to help parishioners personally encounter Jesus in the Eucharist;

2023-2024 Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA):
Hopefully, you have received the Catholic Ministries Appeal mailing and have had a chance to review the materials. The theme for this year’s campaign is Go Forth With Christ. The CMA allows us to extend Christ’s presence to others. It supports each of us in our faith life and enables us to live out our purpose as Catholics. Through gifts to the CMA, we support the larger Church so that it may meet real needs throughout the Diocese. Your gift to the CMA enables the Church to be responsive and caring in fulfilling its mission. Please be as generous as your means allow in your response. Every gift is needed and important. Please pray for the success of our efforts. Thank you. Our given parish goal is $31,000. Please participate in the Appeal. Participation is primary, what is pledged is secondary.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Let us never make the grave mistake of assuming we earn our salvation in the same way we earn a wage. It is a gift lavished upon us by a God who does not count the hours of our labor or measure the amount of our output.

Parish Eucharistic Revival – June 2023–June 2024:
Every parish throughout the United States is inviting parishioners to: Reinvigorate Worship by parishes diligently being faithful to the norms prescribed for the celebration of the Eucharistic Liturgy (Mass); provide monthly holy hour Encounter Nights to help parishioners personally encounter Jesus in the Eucharist; create a Faith Formation opportunity through a small group seven session study guide titled “Jesus and the Eucharist”; and to launch an “Invite One Back” initiative, that is, reaching out to one who has abandoned the gift of Jesus himself, the Eucharist.

With the help of Patrick Miller, who is our Eucharistic Revival Point Person and the Parish Council, especially the Worship and Word Committees, our parish will begin to schedule, in October, events proposed for the Parish Eucharistic Revival.

NYS Eucharistic Congress:
This event will be held October 20–22, 2023 at Our Lady of Martyrs Shrine, Auriesville, NY. We need a parishioner to plan and organize our participation in this Congress. One vision is to arrange a parish bus trip. If you, or know of anyone who can organize such an event, please notify the parish office. Thank you. For more information on the Eucharistic Congress go to nyseucharisticcongress.org.

Programs at St. James the Apostle:
Sister Anne Alderman, SSJ facilitates three programs in the Pine Room at St. James the Apostle, Trumansburg.

You are important and loved.” Women come to the Family Hope Center to be valued.
