Parish Mission:
Our parish mission begins this weekend. Rev. William H. Winters, OFM Cap. will be preaching at all the Sunday Masses. Parishioners please make plans to attend this mini spiritual retreat. It will be held at St. James the Apostle on the Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, evenings of October 3, 4, and 5, at 7:00 p.m. During this Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, Fr. Bill received an appointment in February by Pope Francis to be a Missionary of Mercy. Everyone is invited. As a parishioner, do plan to schedule yourself to be present for the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evening conferences.
Ministry Fair:
The Worship Committee of the parish is sponsoring a Ministry Fair this Saturday and Sunday, October 1 and 2. The Ministry Fair will address the need and encourage parishioners to consider a call to be a liturgical minister, that is, to be an usher, altar server, musician, cantor, lector, Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, etc.. By sharing of one’s gifts and time the parishioners of Mary, Mother of Mercy enrich worship and actively engage with members of our congregation and community. Volunteers from various ministries will be available after Mass on October 1 and 2 to give more information about the current needs of the parish. We invite you to sign up for the ministry that best suits your talents.
Dinner / Dance:
The Fellowship Committee of the parish council, in celebration of the new parish, Mary, Mother of Mercy, has planned a gathering for parishioners on Friday evening, October 28, 2016 at the American Legion, Trumansburg from 6:00–10:00 p.m. The music will be provided by the Tarps. Tickets are $20 and will be available beginning this weekend after the Masses. Please plan to attend this celebratory event.
Guidelines for the Reception of Holy Communion:
The Guidelines for reception of Holy Communion are printed in the hymnals. A rationale is given why Catholics may not receive Communion in Protestant Churches and why Protestants cannot receive Communion in Catholic Churches.
Trumansburg Area Churches (TAC):
TAC s sponsoring the twenty-eighth Annual Crop Hunger Walk on this Sunday, October 2, beginning at 1:45 p.m. at the Trumansburg United Methodist Church. Sponsor someone for the walk. You may do so after the Masses at the table set up by volunteers for the Crop Walk.
Food Donations in Trumansburg:
Food donations may be brought to church next weekend and placed on the table located in the front of the church on the Blessed Mother side. Monetary donations are accepted also. All donations go to help the Trumansburg Food Pantry.
Walk for Hunger in Ovid:
The Ovid Federated Church will again do a Walk for Hunger on Sunday, October 16, to help fill the shelves of their food pantries. The walk will take place at Sampson State park with registration at the concession stand at 12:30 p.m. with the walk starting at 1:00 p.m. Refreshments will be served by the Girl Scouts after the walk. Pregnancy Care Center of the Finger Lakes:
Pregnancy Care Center of the Finger Lakes, located at 551 Exchange St. in Geneva, is offering a “Forgiven and Set Free” post abortive ten-week session beginning October 4 until December 13. There is no cost involved. “if you regret your abortion, you are not alone. Let us help you learn to forgive yourself. Care-Givers Luncheon:
A luncheon for family members caring for a loved one, will be held on Wednesday, October 5, from 12-1:30 p.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Parish Hall (302 St. Catherine Circle, Ithaca). A short program will include speakers from the Office of the Aging and Hospice, and Fr. Joe Marcoux will speak about the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. Winter Coat Collection:
The annual collection of winter coats begins this weekend of September 24 and ends the weekend of October 9. Warm winter coats for Infants through adults are needed. The coats can be new or gently used clean coats. The collection bins are located at Holy Cross at the ramp entrance and at St. Francis Solanus in the vestibule. The coats you donate are shared locally. Coat distribution is scheduled on October 15, 2016 from 10 a.m. until 12 noon at the Ovid VFW. Scripture Study:
Parishioners are welcome to join an informal study of The Gospel According to Mark on Tuesday mornings after the 9:00 AM Mass (St James the Apostle Church), The study will be facilitated by Debbie Short and Camille Taranto. Making Contributions by Check:
The parish of Mary, Mother of Mercy, is yet to be civilly incorporated, therefore checks cannot be made out in that name. For the present time, please make checks out in the name of the church, that is, to St. James the Apostle, or St. Francis Solanus, or Holy Cross.
Don’t Let Your Veggies Grow Up To Be Compost:
Due to poverty, about 1 in 5 kids in our community might not eat a decent meal today. Elderly people and others are affected as well. Altogether, about 14% of our neighbors experience food insecurity. If you have extra produce (fruit, vegetables, and eggs) from your garden or CSA share, please drop it off in the cooler at 94 W. Main Street, Trumansburg on Mondays until October. All food will be donated to local families. Your donation counts! Thank you, Maria Connell.
Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy:
The origin of the Christian Jubilee goes back to Old Testament times. The Law of Moses prescribed a special year for the Jewish people to make restitution for wrongs committed, to forgive debts owed, and set slaves free. In the Roman Catholic tradition, a Holy Year or Jubilee is a great religious event, for the forgiveness of sins and the punishment due to sin. A Jubilee is a year of reconciliation between adversaries. It is a time of solidarity, hope, justice and commitment to serve God with joy and in peace with our brothers and sisters. The guiding principle of the year: “Be merciful just as your Father is merciful.”

Toiletries and Hygiene Products:
There is a basket in the vestibule of the church for donations of toiletries. The request comes from Catholic Charities which is in need of items like shampoo, toothpaste, diapers etc. The items will be transferred to the Catholic Charities Office in Ithaca.
Cancer Services Program (Cortland and Tompkins Counties):
This a program that provides free cancer screenings (breast, cervical, and colorectal) to women from ages 40–64 and men ages 50–64, who are uninsured or have health insurance that does not cover these screenings and who meet income eligibility requirements. These services are provided in local health centers, doctor’s offices, and hospitals. For more information call 1-866 442 2262.
