January 16, 2022 ~ Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading:
As a young man marries a virgin, your Builder shall marry you; and as a bridegroom rejoices in his bride so shall your God rejoice in you. (Is. 62:5)

Psalm:
Proclaim his marvelous deeds to all the nations. (Ps. 96)

Second Reading:
But one and the same Spirit produces all of these, distributing them individually to each person as he wishes. (1 Cor. 12:11)

Gospel:
Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs at Cana in Galilee and so revealed his glory, and his disciples began to believe in him. (Jn. 2:11)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Relationships are hard to clarify. Determining whether people in our lives are simply acquaintances and associates or a deeper level of friend is a journey that takes time. Identifying and celebrating those people who really care about us is a lifelong adventure that involves both moments of intense elation and heartache. Some relationships are more easily definable than others. Two people who are in love must decide whether the love they share has the freedom and depth necessary for lifelong commitments. Other relationships may look like friendship but may harbor grave dysfunction and toxicity. Discernment is needed on all fronts. Our relationship with God also needs definition and discernment. God has taken creation as His spouse and human beings as His children. God delights in us and all that He has made. The wedding feast at Cana demonstrates God’s investment in all of this, especially our happiness. Life is a time for celebration and great rejoicing!

The Pastor Will Be Away:
Fr. Bernard will be away beginning January 26 until March 1, 2022. While he is away Fr. Richard Crawley will be covering the parish weekend Masses. He will also celebrate the 8:30 a.m. daily Mass on Wednesdays and Thursdays at St. Francis Solanus Church. Br. Francisco Serrano will be celebrating an 8:30 a.m. Communion Service on Tuesdays and Fridays at St. Francis Solanus Church. Kathleen Rourke will be celebrating a Communion Service on Mondays at St. James the Apostle at 8:30 a.m. No priest will be available on Friday evenings for the celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation and/or consultation on January 28 and the Fridays of February 2022.

Input for the Synod of Bishops:
Pope Francis I has convened a Synod of Bishops for October 2023. (A synod is a meeting convened to discuss issues relating to the Church – it is an advisory council). Before the Synod of Bishops meet, Pope Francis desires the input of all members of the Church not just Bishops. He is asking Catholics to share how they themselves, and people from all walks of life, are relating to the Church and/or how the Church is relating to them. He is asking Catholics to speak out about what they are experiencing in the Church and about the concerns that have been told to them. We have until the end of March to record this input. Please forward the voiced issues and concerns to the Parish Office, and, in turn, the Parish Office will forward your input to the Diocese. Pope Francis desires to listen to all people and for them to have the opportunity to be participants in the Synod.

2022 Food Pantry Volunteers Needed:
Every two months the churches of Trumansburg and Jacksonville take turns providing volunteers for the Trumansburg Food Pantry located in the Trumansburg United Methodist church. January is one of our months this year for Mary Mother of Mercy/St. James to provide volunteers (we will do this again in December 2022). Please consider helping by signing up on the list provided in the foyer, which also has a chart providing more details about each task. We especially need younger people to help carry boxes and bags up and down stairs. The dates are January 10 and 24. Don’t forget to leave your phone number if you would like a reminder call. Start out your new year by following Jesus’s example of caring for those in need. “…whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” (Mt. 25: 40). Thank you.

2021-2022 Catholic Ministries Appeal:
We received word on January 5, 2022 that 96 parish households have pledged $23,545 toward our given goal of $28,085. This represents 83.83 % of goal. We are most appreciative of those who have made a pledge and encourage all our parish households to make a pledge according to their means. Participation is primary, what is pledged is secondary. CMA pledge envelopes are available in the foyers of the church. Please do what you can to support important programs, services and ministries that strengthen our whole Church.

Prayer for Healing and Harmony:
You are invited to gather for a time of quiet prayer for the healing and harmony of each of us and all of God’s creation. These gatherings begin at 2:00 p.m. and take place at St. James on the first and third Wednesday of each month: January 19; February 2 & 16; and March 2 & 16. Joining the Conversation: An Interactive Celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.:
On Sunday, January 16 from 2:00–4:00 p.m. at the Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine arts, 1 Congress St., Trumansburg, the public is invited to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of nonviolence through hands-on education, art, writing activities, and discussion for people of all ages. There will be open mic readings of Martin Luther King Jr’s speeches, an interactive art activity for teens, and various organizations offering a variety of materials and presentations. This is a free event and all are welcome. Masks are required.

Living Wage and Workers Rights:
The Church has been teaching about the importance of a living wage since the 1890s, and it is still a pressing issue today. The Tompkins County Workers’ Center is one of the recipients of this year’s Catholic Campaign for Human Development in the Diocese of Rochester, and they are partnering with parishes in Tompkins County to advocate for workers’ rights. Family Hope Center:
The Family Hope Center has two locations: one in Geneva and a satellite location in Ovid in the Holy Cross Church Rectory. Family Hope Center fights for life by valuing life above all else. It means offering support through free pregnancy tests, a limited ultrasound referral, parenting and life skills classes, bible studies, material aid such as diapers and clothing, and through our forgiven and set free post abortion study. It means looking at our clients and saying, “I see your life; I value your life. I see and value your children’s lives. Mass Intention Requests:

Sanctuary Lamp:
In Catholic Churches, a candle is always lit to indicate that the Blessed Sacrament is present in the church. This candle is called the “sanctuary lamp.” Every week the candle or oil is renewed. In many churches, people donate to the church for the sanctuary lamp be lit for the week for the intention of the donor. This has been the custom at Holy Cross Church, Ovid and is now extended to St. James the Apostle and St. Francis Solanus Churches. In making the donation simply put on the envelope, “donation for the sanctuary lamp” and specify the week and, if so desired, your intention.

Pregnancy Care Center of the Finger Lakes:

January 9, 2022 ~ The Baptism of the Lord

First Reading:
Then the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all people shall see it together; for the mouth of the LORD has spoken. (Is. 40:5)

O bless the Lord, my soul. (Ps. 104)

Second Reading:
He saved us through the bath of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit. (Ti. 3: 5)

Gospel:
After all the people had been baptized and Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. (Lk. 3:22)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Jesus stood in line with everyone else and was baptized. There is something incredibly humbling about how this must have played out. Then, God did something truly awesome and inspiring. Through a very gentle and simple action he let the world know about the special relationship He shares with Jesus. That’s exactly what is so incredible about our baptisms as well! Through those holy waters God announces to the world the special place we also occupy in His heart. We no longer have to wonder about the purpose of our lives or struggle to find our way. We do not need to fumble around, tripping over ourselves and wondering why we are even here. The answer has been given. All we have to do is live out the vocation we have received, to live the Gospel in fidelity to our Creator. There is nothing to fear and worry has no place. Standing in line with other sinners, we have our anchor and God is very pleased.

Christmas Season Ends:
The feast of the Baptism of the Lord is this Sunday. This feast day marks the ending of the Christmas Season. The annual Ithaca March For Life will take place Saturday, January 15, 2022 from 10:00–11:00 a.m. across the street from Planned Parenthood at 620 W. Seneca St, Ithaca. Human beings easily get bored. Life’s routines can become so predictable that there is often little time for excitement or freshness. Today is all about the new and the wonderful. In celebrating the beauty and simplicity of the Epiphany, we see in tangible ways God’s creative, redemptive, and restorative power. This refreshment and revitalization is offered not only to a select few but to everyone throughout the world. There is nothing routine or static about God. Surprises, wonders, miracles, opportunities, healings, and joy without measure are available to those who believe. There are never any endings, just beginnings. And, when darkness, boredom, and gloom seem to be the order of the day, a bright new light now shines pointing us to truth and reminding us that we are loved.

December 26, 2021 ~ The Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph

After three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. (Lk. 2:46)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
It was the best of times and it was the worst of times. Our families can bring out the best and the worst in us. This is true of our families of origin, the current family of which we are a part, the family of our church, our society, and the like. In all of our family experiences, what stands out as our most challenging memory? Everything human can be found on the pages of family life. But there is also a Divine story to be discovered as well. When life gets difficult and perplexing, today’s Feast of the Holy Family stands to remind us that it is not just by human effort that we tread treacherous waters. We have to remember and learn from the Divine effort too. We need this perspective if our love lessons are going to be learned completely and well. We are all works in progress and we all come from homes that are broken by imperfection. In whatever life brings us and in whatever family we find ourselves, may the promptings we feel toward faith and hope lead us to greater love.

Saturday, January 1, 2022:
The Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God is celebrated on January 1. This year, because the feast day falls on a Saturday, it is not a holy day of obligation. January 1 is also the Octave Day of the Nativity of the Lord, that is, the 8th day of Christmas. There will be one Mass on January 1. It will be the regularly scheduled 4:00 p.m Vigil Mass at St. Francis Solanus.

Sunday, January 2, 2022:
On this day, this year, we celebrate the Epiphany of the Lord. The Masses on that day will be the regular 9:00 a.m. at St. James the Apostle and 10:30 a.m. at Holy Cross.

2021-2022 Catholic Ministries Appeal:
The CMA Office has mailed a follow-up letter to all who have not yet made a pledge to this year’s Appeal. The message is from Bishop Matano and contains an Advent Season theme. This Advent mailing will include a buck slip with information about year-end giving and gifts through retirement funds. Our given parish goal is $28,086. As of December 1, seventy parish households have pledged $17, 130. This is 60.99 % of our given goal. If you have not yet responded, please prayerfully consider a gift. The CMA provides funding for important programs, services and ministries that strengthen our whole Church. Please do what you are able and make a pledge as soon as possible.

Synod on Synodality:
https://www.dor.org/synod is the website for all information on the diocesan phase of preparing for the Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops that will take place in Rome in October 2023. The Diocesan phase of the Synod will conclude on March 31, 2022. The website has a short introductory video by Bishop Matano among other items of interest regarding the Synod.

Prayers from the Sisters of St. Joseph:
The Sisters of St. Joseph have a prayer ministry for the Diocese of Rochester. They have informed our parish that Sisters Anne Marie Burns and Dolores Bachman will be praying for our parish and parishioners throughout 2021. Let us keep in our prayers the two sisters praying for us and for all the Sisters of St. Joseph of Rochester.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Did you ever find yourself wishing that God would just step in and fix all that is wrong with the world? After all, how much longer can all of this go on? There is so much inequity in life. Our world’s political, economic, and environmental systems do not always serve the best interests of people. We read stories about injustice, disregard for human life, greed, heartache, and people being hurt and deprived every day. People are still starving and there is often little regard for human life. This is not the way God intended it to be. Realizing that we have caused most of these problems ourselves, we look to God for an answer and a way out of the difficulties we have created. Taking responsibility for our actions is not something that comes easily. What we fail to see is that God has already sent the answer in the person of Jesus Christ. God did fix our problem! Mary had to set her needs aside in order for the Son of Justice to come into the world. We need to do the same. It is only by believing in, listening to, and acting upon what God has spoken that true peace will ever come to be, and God’s fix be made known.

A Thank You:
Joan Covert has posted a thank you letter in each of the parish churches expressing her gratitude for parishioner prayers. Not only is the letter a “thank you,” but it also contains her story of a cure that has mystified everyone.

Mitten Tree:
An Advent tradition at St. James has been the Mitten Tree. Children’s and adults’ mittens, gloves, scarves, hats, and socks can be hung on the tree located in the front of the Church. Items will be brought to Catholic Charities in Ithaca. (There is a special need for men’s items.)

Birthright Donations:
As we have done in the past during Advent, our parish will be collecting baby and toddler items for Birthright in Ithaca. Please place your donations, unwrapped, in the basket near the side altar at St. James. Listed are items on their “wish list”: receiving blankets, sleepers, bibs, crib sheets, diapers (sizes 4&5), diaper wipes, sleep-n-plays, winter jackets (sizes 12 mos-5T). Season of Advent – Daily Meditations:
A booklet titled, The Word Among Us, is available in the foyer of the church. The booklet contains daily meditations for the Advent Season. Also the booklet contains the scripture Mass readings for each day of Advent. Please take one for your home and for daily prayer.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Shout for joy! When was the last time you ever felt like doing that? Fear, uncertainty, pressure, negativity, disappointment, and myriad other human experiences can rob us of joy. We can never predict what life will bring. As unsettling as that can often seem, life’s unpredictability is also the very thing that allows it to be exciting and adventuresome! We know that life can be difficult, and it is unrealistic to expect it to be otherwise. God never promised an easy road. But, when a person truly falls in love with God and discovers the peacefulness and assurance of God’s presence, then a depth of understanding will be brought to everything they do and experience. Nothing will be able to rob them of joy! When we realize that God, the King of Israel, is in our midst and with us, there is no further misfortune to fear. We celebrate the beauty and wonder of God’s gift of joy today as we ready ourselves, even more excitedly, for the coming of our Savior. Do not fear and do not be discouraged. There is a power and presence within us, our God, who has made us, who loves us and who will keep us. What more do we need? Rejoice!

December 5, 2021 ~ Second Sunday of Advent / Year of St. Joseph

The winding roads shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth, and all flesh shall see the salvation of God. (Mk 7:37)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Sometimes, especially when life gets overwhelming and difficult, we can find ourselves feeling a bit downhearted and miserable. Wallowing in this uncomfortable darkness seems to be our norm and it’s difficult to see a way out of, or through, this experience. If we listen carefully enough, we will hear God’s voice calling out deep within, beckoning us to seek out its source and discover the inner calm and peace that can prevail over the darkness of despair. Faith tells us that God has already begun the creation of a good work in us and is with us, bringing it to completion, until Christ Jesus comes again. It is this light of God’s glory for which we are asked to pave the way and straighten the paths of our lives so that it can shine. With all that life can ask of us and bring to us, it is our task to constantly discern what is of value. So that we do not get so weighed down by things that we no longer see, or feel, God’s salvation.

This weekend there is a second collection. It is the annual Christmas Flower Offering collection. Your offerings help defray the cost of Christmas flowers and decorations.

Holy Day of Obligation:
The patronal feast day of the United States is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is December 8. This year it is a Wednesday. There will be two Masses on that day: St. James the Apostle at 9:00 a.m. and Holy Cross at 6:00 p.m. Please plan now to come to Mass on that day.

CROP Hunger Walk:
A report has been issued regarding the CROP Hunger Walk (Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty) held on October 10 with St. James the Apostle Church hosting this year’s event. A total of $8,738.05 was raised by the Trumansburg Area Churches. Of that amount, St. James the Apostle Church raised $1,939.35. The TAC Food Pantry has already received $2,088 which has been spent on turkeys and gift cards. The food pantry will receive 25% of what was raised by the CROP Hunger Walk. Thank you to all who supported the Walk and Br. Francisco with the hosting volunteers.

The year of St. Joseph marked the 150^th anniversary of the proclamation of St. Joseph as the Patron of the Universal Church. The hope of the year was that Christians would grow in the knowledge of St. Joseph’s virtues and imitate them. During the year our parish prayed the Litany of St. Joseph on Wednesdays after the 8:30 a.m. Mass. The Litany contains a list of the many virtues of St. Joseph. The Litany was prayed for vocations to the priesthood and religious life and that all people would have a respect for human life from conception to death.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Any human success requires vigilance. Opportunities and powerful moments of encounter can easily be missed when we are not attentive. It is all too easy today to live distracted and preoccupied lives. There is so much vying for our attention that it can be hard to be selective and really focus. Caught up in this whirlwind of busyness and anxiety, we become tired and almost sleepwalk through life. Advent is a time to selectively focus. These beautiful four short weeks are a time to look backward and forward and be attentive to the human journey and God’s revelation. From the beginning of time, God has been seeking our attention. He constantly reminds us of the justice he desires to bring and the promise of his abiding unconditional love. Understanding and growing in these truths requires alertness so that we can be strengthened in our faith and prepared for whatever will come.

No Daily Mass—Communion Service:
This Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday (November 29, 30, and December 1) there will be no Mass. The Capuchin Franciscans NY-NE are holding their Provincial Chapter of Content in West Hartford, CT. However, there will be a Communion Service at 8:30 a.m. at St. Francis Solanus on those days. Kathleen Rourke will be leading the Communion Service.

A Gathering:
Please mark your calendars for Friday, December 3, for a gathering at 7:00 p.m. at St. Francis Solanus Church, Interlaken to participate in a holy hour marking the beginning of the Advent Season. The holy hour will begin with Br. Francisco and a presentation on the Advent Season with the Blessed Virgin Mary as a role model during this season. The hour will conclude with Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament. The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be available from 6:30–7:30 p.m. and after the Holy Hour.

Christmas Flower Offering:
Next weekend, December 4 and 5, there will be a second collection. It is the annual Christmas Flower Offering collection. Your offerings help defray the cost of Christmas flowers and decorations.

Angel Tree Tags:
This year the tags for the Angel Tree will need to be requested in advance. The tags would be for children up to age 12. While we cannot guarantee a specific gender or age for the child’s tag you might receive, all the children do come from families that have been or are having a difficult time and could use some outside support to help ensure a joyful Christmas for their children. If you would like to sponsor a child, or more than one child, please contact Gerald Frank at 607–869–5009 and leave a message or e-mail to . All requests will receive a confirmation. All gifts for the children will be due no later than December 5. Additional information will be provided with the tags that you receive. Synod of Bishops:
Pope Francis I has convoked an Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops (Synod: a church meeting to consult on church matters) to take place in Rome in October 2023—two years from now. Preliminary work for the Synod begins this month in all dioceses throughout the world. The theme for the Synod of Bishops is: For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation, and Mission. The first phase is described as “listening to one another and walking forward together, guided by the Holy Spirit” on a Diocesan level.

First Reading:

Gospel:
So Pilate said to him, “Then you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say I am a king.” (Jn. 18:37)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
God is wonderfully and surprisingly creative! He turns the tables on our understanding of what it means to be a king by sending us a king who embraces poverty, insults, suffering, ridicule, rejection, and even death. This is our king. Jesus is not the king of prestige or grandeur but the king who brings light to darkness, hope to despair, sinners to mercy, and new life out of death. God dances on, around, in and through all of the silliness and ugliness of the world bringing all of creation to the eternal dance of new life and hope. Whether we accept it now or hope that we one day do, Christ is king of the universe. Christ is the alpha and the omega, the beginning and the end. Every human being, even those who scorned and rejected him and failed to see him in the least of our brothers and sisters will look upon him. Only those who understand truth will understand that we are on this awesome universal journey to Christ. It is a journey of surprises but also a journey of enlightenment when we will one day see and experience with the deepest joy our being in Christ. We will be restless until we are all one day together united in Christ our King.

A Holy Hour Gathering:
Please mark your calendars for Friday, December 3, for a gathering at 7:00 p.m. at St. Francis Solanus Church, Interlaken to participate in a holy hour marking the beginning of the Advent Season. The holy hour will begin with Br. Francisco and a presentation on the Advent Season with the Blessed Virgin Mary as a role model during this season. The hour will conclude with Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament. The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be available from 6:30–7:30 p.m. and after the Holy Hour.

Capuchin Franciscans: New York-New England:
The Capuchin Franciscans of New York – New England will hold their Provincial Chapter of Content (not a chapter for electing a Provincial & Counselors) at Holy Family Retreat and Conference Center, West Hartford, CT beginning on Sunday evening November 28 until December 1. Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Every human being asks and answers a very important existential question. What happens to us when we die? The answer we provide will determine how we chart the course of our existence. It will also determine whether the Second Coming of Christ will be of any concern to us. For many, life is simply a random occurrence with no significant intention or meaning about it. For these people, their eventual death, and the end of the earth as they know it, have little importance beyond their personal consequences. But, for people of faith our natural death and the Second Coming of Christ have huge implications. It is to these things that our faith speaks volumes and can bring a keen understanding and direction that the secular world simply cannot provide. This is where the call to vigilance and the primordial virtues of faith, hope, and love become useful and meaningful. We are works in progress who can either resist the inspirations of the Divine Artist or give into the wonderful surprising creativity of his will.

Share the Warmth:
Trumansburg Rotary Club has placed a collection bin for winter outerwear on the St. James the Apostle Rectory porch. So, if you have coats, hats, gloves, scarves, boots, etc. that are not being used, drop them off to benefit another. This year, the annual Share the Warmth distribution of free winter outerwear will take place at Ithaca Catholic Charities from November 8-12 and November 15-19. Year of St. Joseph:
Pope Francis initiated the Year of St. Joseph in recognition of the 150th Anniversary of the declaration of St. Joseph as patron of the Catholic Church.
