Second Sunday of Easter, Divine Mercy Sunday ~ April 19, 2020

First reading:
They ate their meals with exultation and sincerity of heart, praising God and enjoying favor with all the people. (Acts 2:46b-47a)

Psalm:
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, his love is everlasting. (Ps. 118)
or Alleluia

Second reading:
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who in his great mercy gave us a new birth to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. (1 Pt. 1:3-9)

Gospel:
Jesus said to him, “Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.” (Jn. 20:19-31)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Have you ever experienced awe? Awe is commonly defined as a feeling of reverential respect mixed with fear or wonder. A moment of awe has the ability to lift us up out of ourselves and immerse us into something that causes us to wonder about ourselves, the meaning of life, and truth. Awe is an experience of connection that links us to something that is beyond the normal happenings of life. For us who believe that the resurrected Christ is present in all of life and the totality of the universe, being touched by awe can lead us to exclaim, “My Lord and my God!” Pondering the vastness of God’s presence also brings us to a profound sense of God’s mercy, which is the showering of His unconditional love on each of His daughters and sons. When we internalize this mystery, we may find ourselves standing in awe once again and feeling an intense sense of peace.

No Mass but Churches are Open:
New York State, through the New York State Catholic Conference, reports that “churches can remain open for personal prayer but not congregant services.” Our parish churches will be open as follows: St. James the Apostle and Holy Cross will be open during the day and St. Francis Solanus church is always open, night and day.

Easter Duty:
“All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year. The precept must be fulfilled during the Easter season unless it is fulfilled for a just cause at some other time during the year” (Church law #920). In reference to this precept the Easter season is considered from the first Sunday of Lent until Trinity Sunday (this year June 7).

Scheduled Mass Intentions:
During this time of suspended public Masses, when a Mass intention has been scheduled for a particular day and time, that Mass intention will be remembered in a private Mass offered on the day scheduled. From your home, join in reflecting on the readings of that day. The Mass readings for each day are linked from the website of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Thanks from the Trumansburg Food Pantry:
During February and March the parishioners of St. James the Apostle are asked to provide volunteers for the Trumansburg Food Pantry. The pantry people on both sides of the tables were very appreciative of the response provided by St. James during these two months. Thanks to you, many people made light work of the distributions. “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” (Matthew 25: 40) Please continue your food or money donations to the Pantry on the second Sunday of each month as many people are having a hard time providing food for their families these days. Though we are not having Mass in the church, your donations may still be placed in front of the Blessed Mary statue at St. James. Thank you!

2019-2020 Catholic Ministries Appeal:
Thank you to everyone who has responded with a pledge to the Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA). As of March 19, one hundred and eight parish families had pledged $23,046, which is 76.87% of the parish goal of $29,979. What is primary is our parishioners’ participation. The CMA provides funding for important programs, services and ministries that strengthen our whole Church. If you have not made a pledge, please do so as soon as possible. If we do not reach our given goal, the parish is billed to make up the difference.

Community Services:

Callers will be referred to the service provider that best fits their situation. No question is too big or too small.

Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord ~ April 12, 2020

First reading:
“He commissioned us to preach to the people and testify that he is the one appointed by God as judge of the living and the dead.” (Acts 10:42)

Psalm:
This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad. (Ps. 118)
or Alleluia

Second reading:
When Christ your life appears, then you too will appear with him in glory. (Col. 3:4)

Gospel:
Then the other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed. (Jn. 20:8)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Our world wants us to believe that life is only what we make of it. Today, we realize how untrue that is. Life is ultimately about what God makes of it, and the resurrection of Jesus reveals this. Alleluia, Christ is risen! Who do you understand yourself to be? What we did yesterday, are doing today, and may do tomorrow pretty much determine how we perceive ourselves. We even perceive Jesus this way in limiting our vision of him to his earthly accomplishments. But, we know through today’s triumphant celebration that Christ is much more than his earthly legacy. The transfigured and resurrected Christ is the beginning, the end, and the fulfillment of all things and every person. All that Jesus did stands in second place to who we now know him to be. Do we realize that this will be our journey too? Christ is risen. Alleluia, alleluia!

Happy Easter:
Some of the happiness has been taken out of Easter this year given that we cannot gather as the Church of Christ to celebrate Jesus, human and divine, who conquered evil and death. This year, unlike other years, we rejoice in this event within our own homes, socially distanced from others. Therein is the sadness joined with our happiness this Easter day. So, despite this sadness, may it not dampen our joy in praising God for this historical event. Jesus conquered death and reveals the power of God over death and that as He raised his Son from death He will raise us from death also and place us in the company of His risen Son. That is our happiness. Alleluia.

Church Continues:

Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord ~ April 5, 2020

Processional Gospel:
“Hosanna to the Son of David; blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; hosanna in the highest.” (Mt. 21:9b)

First reading:
The Lord God is my help, therefore I am not disgraced. (Is. 50:7a)

Psalm:
My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? (Ps. 22)

Second reading:
He humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. (Phil. 2:8)

Gospel:
But Jesus cried out again in a loud voice, and gave up his spirit. And behold, the veil of the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom. (Mt. 27:11-50-51

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Listen carefully to the passion of Christ as it unlocks the door that brings us to the true meaning of human life. Holding what seems like opposite polarities of human existence, it weaves us through the highest of triumphs and the darkest of tragedies. As we witness and meditate upon Jesus’s last days on earth, we see most vividly that God is present in and through it all. God is not only the glue that holds all of life’s seemingly opposing experiences together, but He is the One who offers incredible promise and hope on our road to fulfillment and eternal life. It was only through experiencing the burning agony of suffering’s loneliness and heart-wrenching pain that Jesus experienced the joyful exultation of his resurrected self. There are profound lessons here for all of us to learn.

During the season of Lent, the Church urges all the faithful to reflect a spirit of prayer, penance (conversion), and charity.

From the Pastor’s Desk:

Palms and Palm Sunday

Blessed palms have been placed in the churches and will be available during the week. All are welcome to pick up a palm branch for your home. Placing the palm in your home is a good reminder throughout the year that the people in Jesus’s day rejoiced in his teachings and healings, as they proclaimed him their King. We too rejoice in Jesus’s teachings and His enlightenment, which brings about the well being of humanity. The palm symbolizes our rejoicing in Him.

Holy Week and Easter Sunday

This week, in a special way, we celebrate God’s love for us as expressed in the person of His Son, Jesus. It is celebrating God’s love that makes the week holy. This week, we too, celebrate our love of God through prayers of praise and thanksgiving. Given our present COVID-19 situation, however, there is a sadness. We will not be able to gather as Jesus’s people to celebrate His suffering, death, and resurrection, which we would have done on Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday. Therefore, I encourage families, and individuals, to set time aside, together or alone, to read and meditate on the Sacred Scriptures given us in the liturgy on those holy days. The scripture readings for those days are found in the Lenten booklet The Word Among Us which many of you have or, if you don’t have one yet, there are extra copies of the booklet you can pick up in each of the churches. The Sacred Scripture readings are also available online at the USCCB website. I would also recommend on those holy days that you participate from home in the Masses and ceremonies provided online from our Diocesan Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. These services will be live-streamed by the Catholic Courier website or linked through the diocesan website (www.dor.org):

  • Holy Thursday at 6:00 p.m.,
  • Good Friday at 3:00 p.m.,
  • Holy Saturday at 7:00 p.m., and
  • Easter Sunday at 11:15 a.m.

There is sadness in our inability to gather to celebrate God’s love and our love of God through the liturgies of Holy Week and Easter. However, it offers the opportunity for us, as individuals and as families, to celebrate God’s love in private way or in a family way (“family” as in the domestic church). This too is a good thing.

Letter to the Parishioners:
In an attempt to be in touch with parishioners Fr. Bernard sent a letter on March 27 via email to those whose email addresses we have on file. Highlights of the letter include the following:

Fast and Abstinence Day on Good Friday:

During this time of suspended public Masses, when a Mass intention has been scheduled for a particular day and time, that Mass intention will be remembered in the private Mass offered on the day scheduled. Fifth Sunday of Lent ~ March 29, 2020

First reading:
You shall know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves and have you rise from them, O my people! (Ez. 37:13)

Psalm:
With the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption. (Ps. 130)

Second reading:
But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the spirit is alive because of righteousness. (Rom. 8:10)

Gospel:
Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live.” (Jn. 11:25)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
We face death every day. Whether it comes with the actual death of someone we love (or someone we don’t even know), a failed relationship, the loss of a job, a broken dream, or pondering our own mortality, death is always around us. What does death say to us? What we believe about our death experiences is going to say volumes about how we live our lives. Jesus comes to us today just as he did many years ago to people who were struggling with loss and death and wondering what to do. He calls us out of our tombs, where we have been closed up in fear and despair, and shouts, “Come out!” Jesus leads us out of death and gives us hope. There is always hope. There is always transformation. Although we may not always see where the road of life is taking us or see God’s presence with us on our journey, we will be brought to a new place and be given new life. Walk with God and listen to Him call you. Tomorrow, there awaits another surprise.

No Mass but Churches are Open:
While scheduled Masses are suspended, New York State officials, through the New York State Catholic Conference, report that, “churches can remain open for personal prayer but not congregant services.” Our parish churches will be open as follows: St. James the Apostle and Holy Cross will be open during the day; St. Francis Solanus church is always open, night and day. See the diocese’s Covid-19 website for current information on the bishop’s response to this crisis.

Scheduled Mass Intentions:
During this time of suspended public Masses, when a Mass intention has been scheduled for a particular day and time, that Mass intention will be remembered in the private Mass offered on the day scheduled. From your home, join in reflecting on the readings of that day at that time. The Mass readings for each day are linked from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishop’s website and are also available through the Magnificat magazine and The Word Among Us booklets (see below).

Virtual Mass in Difficult Times:

During Lent:

  • Abstinence from meat on Fridays during Lent has been suspended. The faithful of the Diocese of Rochester are granted a dispensation from the law of abstinence from meat on the Fridays of Lent for this year in an effort to assist people who may have difficulties in shopping for food or other reasons that would make this practice difficult at this time. Fridays of Lent remain days of penance and prayer, which unite us ever closer to Jesus Christ.
  • Stations of the Cross previously scheduled for Thursdays at Holy Cross, along with a soup supper, and Fridays at St. James, along with Benediction, are cancelled.
  • Copies of the Word Among Us, which provide five minutes with the word of God during Lent, are still available in the foyers of the church. The booklets contain the daily Mass Lenten Sacred Scripture readings and also a Lenten daily meditation section to guide you in your daily Lenten prayer time. Please be sure each family has a copy of the Word Among Us.
  • The Catholicism classes, presently scheduled for Wednesdays at St. Francis are postponed at this time.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation:
The Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) will be offered, with a confessional screen (no face to face confessions),  every Friday at St. Francis church in Interlaken from 6:30–7:00 p.m. While the bishop has canceled the diocesan day of penance and mercy on April 1, Fr. Bernard will still be available for hearing confessions that day from 10:00 a.m. until noon, 2:00–4:00 p.m., and 6:00–8:00 p.m. at St. Francis Solanus. You may also phone the parish office (607 294–0064) to make a personal appointment to receive the sacrament of reconciliation.

On March 19, one hundred and eight parish families had pledged $23,046, which is 76.87% of the parish goal of $29,979. What is primary is our parishioners’ participation. The CMA provides funding for important programs, services and ministries that strengthen our whole Church. If you have not made a pledge, please do so as soon as possible. If we do not reach our given goal, the parish is billed to make up the difference.

Prayer for Priests:
A priest, whether an active or retired diocesan priest or an order priest serving in the diocese, is assigned a day to be the beneficiary of prayers. In the foyer of each of our churches you will find the calendar for the year showing each priest’s day of prayer. On a priest’s day they will be prayed for through the Prayer for Priests Calendar Ministry. The ministry appreciates additional prayers from parishioners for all our priests of the Rochester Diocese. For further information on this ministry, please visit the website: http://www.mprp-roc.org/cal.htm.

Online Access to Prayers and Readings:
Magnificat magazine is a monthly subscription booklet (with both English and Spanish editions) that has the prayers and readings for all the Masses of the month, plus morning and evening prayer, brief writings by/about the saints, and more. Since a lot of people have their usual Masses canceled due to the virus, Magnificat is temporarily offering free online access so that anyone with a computer or smartphone can have those texts for each day at home. Fourth Sunday of Lent ~ March 22, 2020

First reading:
“Not as man sees does God see, because man sees the appearance but the Lord looks into the heart.” (1 Sm. 16:7b)

Psalm:
The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want. (Ps. 23)

Second reading:
“Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light.” (Eph. 5:14b)

Gospel:
When Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, he found him and said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” (Jn. 9:35)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Seeing is much more than just a function of our eyes. We can look at something with clear vision but not really see it. Often what we think we see is colored by our presuppositions, prejudices, assumptions, and needs. We judge things by appearance, but God looks into the heart. God’s sight has a much wider range and far greater depth. Receiving things or people just based on appearance can lead us to erroneous and hurtful judgments. We think we are seeing clearly, but we are not. Allowing God to restore our sight so that we can truly see is a worthy goal for our Lenten journey. Look within and look without. What do you see? Allow God to complete the picture for you. Ask Him to give you the insight to look into someone’s heart. Don’t draw hasty conclusions or presume you know the truth. Be open and humble enough so that you can receive the sight that only God can give.

Third Sunday of Lent ~ March 15, 2020

First reading:
Moses cried out to the Lord, “What shall I do with this people? A little more and they will stone me!” (Ex. 17:4)

Psalm:
If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts. (Ps. 95)

Second reading:
But God proves his love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us. (Rom. 5:8)

Gospel:
Jesus said to her, “Believe me, woman, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.” (Jn. 4:21)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
“Is the Lord in our midst or not?” Have you ever found yourself asking this question? Finding God’s presence and truly encountering God are not always easy tasks. When we seek God only with our minds, we risk reducing God to simply an idea rather than meeting him as someone who is real and actually present to us. We all have to wrestle with who we are and what gives our lives purpose and meaning. We can often get confused and misunderstand not only who we are, but who God is. Even the disciples and the Samaritan woman at the well missed the point Jesus was trying to make. There is only one person who can satisfy the deepest yearnings and longings of our hearts. Only Jesus can lead us to truth and provide the water that can quench our thirst. Each of us, not only with our heads but with our hearts, must come to see that Jesus is the Savior of the world. It is only when we can honestly make this confession that we will know God is truly present.

As related the distribution of Holy Communion under both species, that is, distribution of the body and blood of Christ, the Catholic faith teaches that Christ, is received even under only one species. It is not necessary to receive communion under both species.
  • Regarding the sign of peace: the faithful should use their best judgment and offer a simple nod or bow of the head, and simply say: “Peace be with you”. Shaking of hands should be avoided as well as holding hands during the recitation of the Our Father.
  • Following each Mass all vessels will be cleaned with hot water and mild soap.

Psalm:
Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you. (Ps. 33)

Second reading:
He saved us and called us to a holy life, not according to our works but according to his own design. (2 Tm. 1:9a)

Gospel:
“This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” (Mt. 17:5b)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Have you ever given much thought to who you were really created to be? Our lives are the product of various circumstances, choices, predetermined scenarios, and a whole host of events and inherited baggage. All of these components come together and form the person we understand ourselves to be. Jesus knew who he was and who he was becoming. He showed his transfigured self to his disciples on a high mountain and revealed to them who he was really meant to be. The weaknesses, imperfections, fears, and impressions that we carry with us often color our choices and hinder us from really seeing the greater picture of who we are. What do you imagine your transfigured self to be? Jesus promises a new life in heaven. Have you ever given much thought to what that may mean for you?

Psalm:
Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned. (Ps. 51)

Second reading:
For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so, through the obedience of one, the many will be made righteous. (Rom. 5:19)

Gospel:

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
We desperately need the season of Lent. Have you ever found yourself running in all directions, tired, frustrated, and frazzled and yearning for the moment when you can stop, find some time for reflection and prayer, and get your head straight? Life pulls us in all directions. On top of that, the presence of sin in our lives gives us blurry vision and makes us forget who we really are. We can easily lose touch with God. Lent gives us the opportunity to return to simpler times and clear away some of life’s clutter. We can change up our routines a bit and realize that Jesus is the one who can set us right with God and restore what was originally meant to be. Our task is to avoid the temptations that can weigh us down, distract us, and distort our vision. Are you aware of what things in your life do this to you? Over the next few weeks, you have an opportunity to avoid them.

Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ February 23, 2020

First reading:
“Take no revenge and cherish no grudge against any of your people. You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (Lev. 19:18a)

Psalm:
The Lord is kind and merciful. (Ps. 103)

Second reading:
Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? (1 Cor. 3:16)

Gospel:
“I say to you, love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you.” (Mt. 5:44)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
What does it mean to be holy? God has definite ideas about the answer. Not bearing hatred for your brother or sister, not seeking revenge or holding grudges, loving your neighbor as yourself, treating human beings as the temples of God they are, offering no resistance to someone who wants to hurt you, turning the other cheek, not turning your back on someone, loving your enemies, praying for those who persecute you, and striving for perfection are some of the ways holiness can be pursued. Holiness, understood through God’s eyes, is attainable by all of us. It comes from making the right Gospel-centered choices and not falling victim to lesser temptations, reactions, and desires. Knowing what holiness actually involves, is it something you really want?

Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ February 16, 2020

First reading:
Immense is the wisdom of the Lord; he is mighty in power, and all seeing. (Sir. 15:18)

Psalm:
Blessed are they who follow the law of the Lord! (Ps. 119)

Second reading:
Rather, we speak God’s wisdom, mysterious, hidden, which God predetermined before the ages for our glory. (1 Cor. 2:7)

Gospel:
Let your “Yes” mean “Yes,” and your “No” mean “No.” Anything more is from the evil one. (Mt. 5:37)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
One of the greatest and most necessary gifts God gives us is free will. We always have the ability to choose. Life or death and good or evil are two of the core decisions every human being must make. We can choose to love and choose whether to pursue a relationship with God. True salvation comes when we make the choices that keep us focused on God and God’s commandments. How we view others reveals what choices we have made. People are not property, and they are not dispensable. We cannot exchange them at will or use them for our own self-serving ends. For this reason, God holds high the commitment of marriage and the integrity of all of our relationships. This is the basis of God’s teaching on forgiveness and reconciliation, and the reason adultery is prohibited.

This mailing will go to all donors who have given to the CMA in 2016–2017, 2017–2018, and 2018–2019, but not yet this year. Parishioners who have not made a pledge to this year’s ministries appeal are asked to please do so soon, to avoid receiving the letter. As of February 7, 2020, 102 households in our parish have made a commitment to contribute $22,466 to the CMA, nearly 75% of our goal of $29,979.00. Pledge envelopes may be obtained in the foyer of each church.

Food Pantry Volunteers Needed:
