Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Before the arrival of GPS and other technological advances, folks relied on a compass to assist them with directions. If set and used properly, people who would otherwise be lost could find their way. What properly sets our God compass? We know that we require God in order to find our way through life, but we need to be in proper relationship with God before this can effectively happen. God certainly does not need to be placated, but some things open Him up to us more than others. Isaiah gives us a clue today. Share your bread with the hungry…clothe the naked…remove oppression, false accusation, and malicious speech…satisfy the afflicted. When we do this, we will not only be on proper course and in right relationship with God, but will be the salt and light Jesus asks us to be.

2019–2020 Catholic Ministries Appeal:
A second follow-up mailing from the Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA) office is scheduled for the week of February 18. This mailing will go to all donors who have given to the CMA in 2016–2017, 2017–2018, and 2018–2019, but not yet this year. Parishioners who have not made a pledge to this year’s ministries appeal are asked to please do so soon, to avoid receiving the letter. As of January 31, 2020, a hundred households in our parish made a commitment to contribute $21,716.00 to the CMA, 72.44% of our goal of $29,979.00. Pledge envelopes may be obtained in the foyer of each church.

Public Policy Weekend:
Catholics need to speak out for the vulnerable and one way to do this is by opposing physician-assisted suicides in New York. You’ll have the opportunity in each church to sign our diocese-wide Public Policy Weekend petition in opposition to physician assisted suicide. It will read: “I strongly oppose any legislation to legalize assisted suicide in New York State. Allowing doctors to prescribe a lethal dose for patients to end their lives devalues human life. There is also significant potential for abuse. I urge you to focus instead on improving palliative care, to ensure compassionate, comprehensive care and pain management for those who are terminally ill. Food Pantry Volunteers Needed:
Every two months the churches of Trumansburg and Jacksonville take turns providing volunteers for the Trumansburg Food Pantry located in the Trumansburg United Methodist church. February and March are the months for Mary Mother of Mercy/St. James to provide volunteers this year. Please consider helping by signing up on the list provided in the foyer. There are various times and tasks available from which you can choose and the dates are February 17 and March 2, 16, and 30. Don’t forget to leave your phone number if you would like a reminder call. Food Donations at St. James:
This Sunday, February 9, and every second Sunday of the month, please bring non-perishable food items to St. James church. You may place the item(s) in front of the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Monetary gifts are also welcome. Checks should be made out to Mary, Mother of Mercy, with food pantry in the memo line. Your contributions will go directly to the Trumansburg Food Pantry. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion:
The parish has several home bound parishioners. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, in their appointment by the bishop, can and are invited to bring Holy Communion to the home bound. Please phone the parish office to volunteer. Thank you.

Rice Bowl:
Through Catholic Relief Services (CRS), our parish provides Rice Bowl boxes for people to use during Lent. Pick up your family’s CRS Rice Bowl in the foyer of the church and, throughout Lent, add in your pocket change or other money. This is an easy way for a family to give to those in need around the world and 25% of what is collected stays in our local community.

Catholicism Classes:
The classes will resume on Wednesday, March 4, and continue on the following Wednesdays through the season of Lent. The same class will be held at 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. in the annex at St. Francis Solanus church. Plan now to participate in this adult formation program created by Bishop Robert Barron.

Ithaca Loves Life:
The next monthly “Stand Out for Life” prayer vigils will be on Saturday, February 22, from 9:00–10:30 a.m., across the street from Planned Parenthood. These vigils are a peaceful, prayerful public witness to end abortion and to offer information to the abortion-minded. Let us unite and boldly come together in love for ninety minutes each month. Marriage Enrichment:

February Day Camp:
Looking for childcare over February break? Camp Stella Maris has you covered! Their vacation camp runs from February 17 through 21, 8:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. daily. You have the option of coming for the full week or just a few days. There are tons of great activities planned as well as two field trips. Sunday Collection Counters:
The parish is in need of people to count our weekend collections. Volunteers work with another volunteer once a month for about two–three hours. If you can do this ministry, it will be a great help to the parish. Please contact the parish office to volunteer.

Sacrament of Reconciliation:
Throughout February, please phone the parish office for an appointment for reconciliation. The sacrament is also offered at Immaculate Conception church in Ithaca on Saturdays, 2:00–4:00 p.m.; at St Mary’s in Watkins Glen on Sundays, 7:00–7:45 a.m.; and at St Francis DeSales in Geneva on Saturdays, 3:30–4:15 p.m., and Mondays through Fridays, 11:45a.m.–12:00 p.m.

The Sisters of St. Joseph have a prayer ministry for the Diocese of Rochester. They have informed our parish that Sr. Anne Marie Burns will be praying for the parish of Mary, Mother of Mercy, during 2020. In gratitude, let us pray for Sr. Anne Burns and all the Sisters of St. Joseph.

Snow Days:
A reminder that if during the week a “snow day” for the local schools has been declared there will be no morning Mass or communion service that day.

Pregnancy Care Center of the Finger Lakes, located at 551 Exchange St. in Geneva, is offering a “Forgiven and Set Free” post abortive ten-week session beginning October 4 until December 13. Cancer Services Program (CSP):
Cortland and Tompkins Counties offer free cancer screenings to those who are uninsured or have health insurance that does not cover these screenings. The screening services are provided in local health centers, doctors’ offices, and hospitals. For more information, contact CSP at 866 442 2262.

Toiletries and Hygiene Products:
There is a basket in the vestibule of St. James church for donations of toiletries. The request comes from Catholic Charities which is in need of items like shampoo, toothpaste, diapers etc. The items will be transferred to the Catholic Charities office in Ithaca.

The Presentation of the Lord ~ February 2, 2020

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Today’s celebration can be seen as another “epiphany” of sorts, whereby Jesus is recognized as the one who will fulfill the Jewish people’s messianic expectations. Jesus is the one who comes to purify and refine humanity and provide us with proper direction and focus. Jesus also presents himself to each one of us. Will we accept him as he is or only as we want or need him to be? The Gospel message is meant to be heard, whole and entire. When it is, it is always a very challenging, table-turning experience that can make even the holiest among us feel a bit uncomfortable. Being purified and refined never comes easy and requires that we give ourselves fully to God and His design. Are we willing to do so?

Super Bowl Sunday is this Sunday, February 2. Across this nation it is also the date for the Souper Bowl of Caring. All three churches that make up the parish of Mary, Mother of Mercy, will be participating in this event. The idea is to collect donations of non-perishable food items and cash to support the local food pantries in each of the communities in our parish. Food items may be brought to the churches along with monetary donations during the weekend of February 1 and 2. Parish Finance Council:
The finance council met on January 23 to review the parish’s financial statements for the ending of the second quarter of the fiscal year on December 31, 2019. The year to date operating revenue amounted to $120,325.17. The operating expenses amounted to $95,474.27, leaving a net operating revenue of $24,850.90. The parish received a bequest of $10,000 for St. Francis Solanus church from Betty M. Hill. This inflated our ordinary revenue for which we are most grateful. Regarding the weekend collections, they are down $2,812.68 from the previous year. This trend is happening because of the lack of Mass attendance on the Lord’s day. Please invite people to return to the habit of going to church to celebrate their union with Jesus. The Christmas collection amounted to $6,049, which is $448.90 higher than the previous year. A “thank you” to all who supported the parish in an extraordinary way at Christmas. Thank you to everyone for the support you give the parish. You have to know it is appreciated greatly.

Do you feel overly oppressed or burdened by life’s demands or feel unsettled and anxious about where you find yourself? Many walk through life carrying very heavy sacks on their shoulders and are weighed down by them. Moments of joy and light are far and few between, with darkness and disappointment being more the norm. God desires that we live in light and experience joy. Christ has revealed this to us. Often, we give the world and things we have created too much power over us. We lose our sense of playfulness and freedom and allow other people and things to define and influence us. We are asked to reclaim ourselves today and realize that we are being asked to spread the Gospel of joy. Are we able and willing to do this?

2019–2020 Catholic Ministries Appeal:
Thank you to everyone who has responded with a pledge to the Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA). As of January 16, one hundred and one parish families have pledged $21,866 which is 72.94% of the parish goal of $29,979. What is primary is our parishioners’ participation; what is secondary is what is pledged. The CMA provides funding for important programs, services, and ministries that strengthen our whole Church.

Priest Coverage:
This weekend Fr. Bernard will be covering for Fr. Joseph Marcoux, pastor of St. Catherine’s, Ithaca. Fr. Bernard will also be away during the month of February. At the parish of Mary, Mother of Mercy, Fr. Richard Crawley, OFM Cap., will be the presider at the Masses for this weekend and during weekends throughout February. Fr. Richard will also be presiding over the weekday Masses at St. Francis, Tuesday through Friday, during February.

Second Wind Cottages:
Everyone is invited to a presentation on Second Wind Cottages this Sunday, January 26, at the Jacksonville United Methodist Church at 2:00 p.m. The guest speaker will be Carmen Guidi, founder of Second Wind Cottages Inc. that provides housing and support for homeless adults in Tompkins County. This presentation is sponsored by the Trumansburg Area Churches (TAC).

Public Policy Weekend:
As Christians, we are called to reach out in love and compassion to those experiencing illness and suffering, not to abandon them during their time of need, and to offer our support, mercy and assistance. Those experiencing suffering at the end of life should have full access to palliative care, which eases physical pain while honoring the value and dignity of the patient. During our upcoming Public Policy weekend, February 8 and 9, please plan to sign the diocese-wide petition that will go to our state elected officials urging them to oppose physician assisted suicide and support the expansion of palliative care in New York. December Attendance and Collections:
On an average in the month of December there were 56 people at the 5:00 p.m. Saturday Mass at St. Francis, 90 at the 9:00 a.m. Sunday Mass at St. James, and 58 at the 10:30 a.m. Sunday Mass at Holy Cross. The average Mass collections during the month were: $831 at the Saturday evening Mass at St. Francis and, on Sundays, $794 at the Mass at St. James and $639 at the Mass at Holy Cross. Parishioners participating through the WeShare online giving contributed $2,264. Regarding the Christmas celebration, at St. James the Apostle’s 4:30 p.m. Vigil Mass there were 226 people and the collection amounted to $2,316; at the Holy Cross Vigil Mass at 8:00 p.m. there were 123 people and the collection amounted to $1,613. There were 37 people at St. Francis Solanus for the Christmas day Mass at 9:30 a.m. and the collection amounted to $755. “Thank you all for your attendance and offerings.”

A Hidden Life:
A new movie called A Hidden Life is about an Austrian Catholic named Franz Jägerstätter whose conscience did not allow him to swear loyalty to Hitler and Nazism. It’s a beautiful love story with gorgeous scenery and amazing acting, but most of all it’s a reminder of what courage looks like in the face of evil and of unbearable pressure to acquiesce to the status quo. Franz was beatified in 2007, a step on the way to being recognized as the saint he was. The film is presently showing at the Ithaca Cinemapolis. Notre Dame High School Open House:
Notre Dame High School, for grades 7–12, is hosting an open house on Tuesday, January 28, from 6:30-8:00 p.m. as part of Catholic Schools Week. Visitors can meet faculty, take a student-led tour, and hear presentations on admissions and financial aid. Busing from the Ithaca area is available for interested students daily to/from Notre Dame. Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Our relationships ground and define us. Understanding where we come from, who matters to us, and to whom we have an allegiance all frame and direct our lives. One unchangeable about who we are is that God formed us in our mother’s womb. Unless understanding of ourselves begins with this solid fact about ourselves, our knowledge will always be incomplete. Every two months the churches of Trumansburg and Jacksonville take turns providing volunteers for the Trumansburg Food Pantry located in the Trumansburg United Methodist church. 2019–2020 Catholic Ministries Appeal:
Thank you to everyone who has responded with a pledge to the Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA). As of January 9, 2020, one hundred parish families have pledged $21,816, which is 72.77% of the parish goal of $29,979. What is primary is our parishioners’ participation; what is secondary is what is pledged. The CMA provides funding for important programs, services, and ministries that strengthen our whole Church.

Priest Coverage:
Fr. Joseph Marcoux, pastor of St. Catherine of Sienna church in Ithaca, will be away the weekends of January 19 and 26, and has requested help. Fr. Bernard will fill in for Fr. Joseph on those weekends. Fr. Bernard will also be away during the month of February. At the parish of Mary, Mother of Mercy, Fr. Richard will be the presider at the Masses for the last two weekends of January and during weekends throughout February. Fr. Richard will also be presiding over the weekday Masses at St. Francis, Tuesday through Friday, during February.

Trumansburg Area Churches:
Everyone is invited to annual meeting of the Trumansburg Area Church (TAC). It will be held this Sunday, January 19, at the Jacksonville United Methodist church at 1:00 p.m. Carmen Guidi will be providing a presentation on Second Wind Cottages Inc., which provides housing and support for homeless adults in the Tompkins County.

Public Policy Weekend:
Catholics speak out for the vulnerable by opposing physician-assisted suicide in New York State. Catholic teaching calls us to uphold the dignity and value of human life, from conception until its natural end. This year legislation is being proposed in New York to legalize physician-assisted suicide. In the coming weeks you’ll have the opportunity to sign our diocese-wide petition asking our New York State legislature to oppose legalizing physician assisted suicide in New York. Paper petitions will be available during Public Policy weekend, February 8 and 9. If you would prefer to sign the petition online, please to www.dor.org/petition.

Addressing Racism:
As Catholics we believe that racism is evil, a sin against human dignity. It’s not enough to say “I’m not a racist;” we have to actively work against racism. Educating people about how racism works is one important step to opposing it. Catholic Charities and the local Multi-cultural Resource Center in Ithaca are offering a great opportunity to do this with a class called “Talking Circles on Race and Racism” beginning at 6:00 p.m. on January 23, and 30, at Immaculate Conception church. The Baptism of the Lord~ January 12, 2020

After Jesus was baptized, he came up from the water and behold, the heavens were opened for him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming upon him. (Mt. 3:16)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
The Baptism of Jesus is similar in purpose to our own. As Jesus was distinguished as the beloved Son in whom God is well pleased, so, too, are we. We share that same special favor with God and are brought into an intimate relationship with Him. Does this reality change how we feel about ourselves? It certainly does. Baptism forever changes us and calls us to the ministries of mercy and humility. God has formed each of us in our mother’s womb and asks us to be a light for all people. We carry this light humbly as we know who ultimately has a claim on us and to whom we belong. We then are called to live our lives in imitation of Christ and become incarnate vessels of mercy. Our world needs to be touched by compassion and only we can complete the task.

Have you ever experienced a time in your life when everything came together and became abundantly clear? You may have been confused about something, in the dark, at a point of doubt, or unclear as to how to act. You may have questioned someone’s motivation and found yourself coming to the wrong conclusion. Then out of nowhere, the insight came and reality dawned. You experienced an epiphany of sorts! Today, we celebrate Christ’s manifestation to all of the nations of the world. Has it dawned on you yet that Jesus Christ is the answer humanity has been seeking? The local “March for Life” will take place in Ithaca on Friday, January 24, beginning at 12:45 p.m. from the steps of Immaculate Conception Church. Save the date and join us!

Family Hope Center:
The Family Hope Center out of Geneva will be using the rectory at Holy Cross, Ovid, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:00 noon through 4:00 p.m. The Family Hope Center offers hope to families by providing pregnancy and parenting education, support for relationships, and needed baby supplies. The Center emphasizes, with compassion and grace, the value of each family member and desires to empower the community, including those looking at a pregnancy decision, to make life-affirming choices through a transformational encounter with Jesus. Through their free and confidential support services, the center’s staff can assist people with exploring options, or just listen if you need to talk with someone as you move forward in life’s journey.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Families can be challenging. As much as they can be places of love, growth, and life, they can also be places of hurt, conflict, and despair. What has been your experience of family? There is no way around it: being human requires family life. We have to learn how to celebrate and embrace as well as forgive and understand. Virtue is required. St. Paul asks us to “put on heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.” We are asked to bear with one another and forgive one another. These are tall orders for anyone, but they are not impossible achievements. If we keep our eyes on Jesus and trust in God as the Holy Family did, St. Paul’s vision is obtainable. Our families can take on a sacramental character and become places where God’s love is revealed.

New Year’s Day Masses:
January 1, 2020, is a holy day of obligation in celebration of the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, and the Octave Day of the Nativity of the Lord. There will be a Mass on Tuesday, December 31, at St. Francis beginning at 6:00 p.m. There will be no morning Mass that day. On Wednesday, January 1, there will be a 9:00 a.m. Mass at St. James in Trumansburg and a 10:30 a.m. Mass at Holy Cross in Ovid.

Daily Mass Schedule:
The Mass schedule change was to begin on January 2, but Mass has been cancelled on Thursday, January 2, and Friday, January 3. The new daily Mass schedule will begin on Tuesday, January 7. 2019-2020 Catholic Ministries Appeal:
Thank you to everyone who has responded with a gift or pledge to the Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA). As of December 17, 2019, eighty-seven parish families have pledged $17,466 which is 58.26% of our parish goal of $29,979. What is primary is our parishioners’ participation. What is secondary is what is pledged. The CMA provides funding for important programs, services, and ministries that strengthen our whole Church.

Addressing Racism:
As Catholics we believe that racism is evil, a sin against human dignity. It’s not enough to say, “I’m not a racist”; we have to actively work against racism. Educating ourselves about how racism works is one important step to opposing it. Catholic Charities and the local Multi-Cultural Resource Center are offering a three-session class called “Talking Circles on Race and Racism” on Thursdays January 16, 23, and 30, beginning at 6:00 p.m. at Immaculate Conception church. Have you ever asked God for a sign? What were you hoping to see? Signs validate our experience and give us assurance and direction. We tend to equate God’s signs with miraculous or marvelous events. We even sometimes look for small gestures as signs that God is confirming a particular experience or choice we are making. Being overly preoccupied with receiving these kinds of signs from God can often signal a lack of faith. Is there anything that can convince us that God is real and with us on our journey? Yes. God’s sign has already been given: the virgin shall conceive and bear a son and shall name him Emmanuel. Emmanuel, God with us, is God’s most perfect sign and the only one we need. Our incarnate God is all we need to set us straight and validate our experience. Only Jesus can direct us to the Father, to our self, one another, and our world. When our lives are conformed to His, nothing else is needed.

Funeral:
Jeanne R. Quinn died on December 9, 2019, at the age of eighty-nine. Her funeral was at Holy Cross church, Ovid, on December 13.

Parish Christmas Mass Schedule:
Christmas is on a Wednesday this year. Our schedule of Masses for the holiday begins on Christmas Eve with Mass at 4:30 p.m. at St. James the Apostle, Trumansburg, and an 8:00 p.m. Mass at Holy Cross, Ovid. There will be no morning Mass on December 24 and 26. On Christmas Day, December 25, there will be one Mass at 9:30 a.m. at St. Francis Solanus, Interlaken. We hope to see you at one of these Masses celebrating the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Decorating for Christmas:
This Saturday, December 21, everyone is invited to stay after evening Mass to help decorate St. Francis church for Christmas and the Christmas season (which ends Sunday, January 12, 2020). It will not take too long and it is always a joyous and happy event. Help is also needed after the 10:30 mass this Sunday for decorating Holy Cross for Christmas. We will start right after the Mass concludes. Any time you can give to help at either church would be greatly appreciated.

Hat, Scarf, and Mitten Tree:
The annual hat, scarf, and mitten tree has been set up in the foyer at St. James church. Please consider making a donation of new items, for all ages. These much needed winter items will be taken to Catholic Charities of Tompkins/Tioga Counties for distribution before Christmas.

November Attendance and Collections:
On an average in the month of November there were 56 people at the 5:00 p.m. Mass on Saturday, 105 at the 9:00 a.m. Sunday Mass, and 80 at the 10:30 a.m. Mass, also on Sunday. The average Mass collections during the month were: $803 at the Saturday evening Mass at St. Francis, and, on Sundays, $966 at the 9:00 a. m. Mass at St. James and $807 at the 10:30 a.m. Mass at Holy Cross. Parishioners participating through the WeShare online giving contributed $2,576. “Thank you all for your attendance and offerings.”

Changes in the Daily Mass Schedule:
Our parish presently has daily morning Mass on Tuesday through Friday, in different places and without a consistent time. To provide an equal opportunity for all parishioners and to eliminate the confusion regarding the place and time, beginning January 2, 2020, the daily Mass (Tuesday through Friday) will be centrally located at St. Francis Solanus church, Interlaken, beginning at 8:30 a.m. The communion service will continue on Mondays at 9:00 a.m. at St. James. Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Do you ever feel inwardly dry and parched? Where do you turn to gain a refreshed sense of being and purpose? Just as we often do not refresh our physical bodies with what is healthiest, we make the same mistake with our soul. We do not always reach for the healthiest spiritual food. We confuse our inner dryness with something else and reach out for the wrong thing. It is no wonder why so many people are lost and confused. We will never be completely satisfied or whole this side of our journey. A good measure of patience and waiting is needed as we hope for the rainwater of God’s presence to fall upon us. When are we going to finally realize that Jesus is the One who has come to refresh us, and we no longer have to search for another? Our souls will find refreshment and rest only when they rest in God.

Burial:
Barbara S. Harding from Middleburgh, New York, died on November 13, 2019, at the age of 77. Her burial took place at Holy Cross cemetery on November 25.

Next Saturday, December 21, everyone is invited to stay after evening Mass to help decorate the church for Christmas and the Christmas season (which ends Sunday, January 12, 2020). It will not take too long and it is always a joyous and happy event.

Share the Warmth:
The Trumansburg Rotary Club is sponsoring a collection bin on the front porch of the St. James rectory as part of their Share the Warmth campaign that runs through early December. Share the Warmth accepts all winter clothing in good repair: coats, snow pants, boots, hats, scarves, gloves, mittens, etc. Blankets also are welcome. All donations should be new or gently used, and clean for future recipients. Thank you to all who participate in sharing the warmth this winter.

Sunday Collection Counters Needed:
St. Francis Solanus church is in urgent need of two volunteers who are able and willing to count the weekend collection once a month at St. Francis. Please contact Fr. Bernard for more information.

Catholicism Classes:
This Wednesday’s lesson is part two of “The Indispensable Men” and will focus on St. Paul: devout Jew, his youth and education, his conversion and mission, and Paul’s theology of the Resurrection and participation in Christ. If you can’t make all the classes—come when you are able and when there is a topic of interest to you. Bishop Robert Barron created the Catholicism Adult Formation Program. Our parish classes are held on Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m. and again at 7:00 p.m., both at the St. Francis church annex in Interlaken.

Parish Christmas Mass Schedule:
Christmas is on a Wednesday this year. Our schedule of Masses for the holiday begins on Christmas Eve with Mass at 4:30 p.m. at St. James the Apostle, Trumansburg, and an 8:00 p.m. Mass at Holy Cross, Ovid. On Christmas Day, December 25, there will be one Mass at 9:30 a.m. at St. Francis Solanus, Interlaken. We hope to see you at one of these Masses.

Ring Those Bells:
The Salvation Army is looking for volunteers to ring the bell near the red bucket at the Shur-Save from the day after Thanksgiving through Christmas, any time between 7:00 a.m.–9:00 p.m. Most shifts are an hour in length; though feel free to stay longer. It is a great opportunity to meet your neighbors while helping those in need. The money raised will mainly be used in our local community. 2019-2020 Catholic Ministries Appeal:
Thank you to everyone who has responded with a gift or pledge to the Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA). As of November 27, fifty-one parish families have pledged $7,070, which is 23.58% of our parish goal of $29,979. What is primary is our parishioners’ participation. What is secondary is what is pledged. The CMA provides funding for important programs, services, and ministries that strengthen our whole Church.

CMA Allocations:
In anticipation of a challenging fiscal and fundraising environment in the coming year, the Diocese of Rochester is not increasing the CMA 2019–2020 parish goals. While holding the overall CMA goal flat this year, the diocese is still committed to maintaining the usual level of services to the parishes. These include Catholic Charities, ministries to youth and young adults (faith formation, Catholic schools, campus ministry, CYO, etc.), seminarian and deacon education, and other CMA funded programs. It is important to remember that the CMA covers about 57% of the diocesan budget, not the entire diocesan budget.

Snow Days:
A reminder that if during the week a “snow day” for the local schools has been declared there will be no morning Mass or communion service that day.

To a Suffering Church:
Bishop Robert Barron has written a letter to Catholics who feel demoralized, scandalized, angry beyond words, and ready to quit because of the sexual abuse scandal in the Church. Many are asking “Why stay Catholic with so much scandal?” It is a compelling letter encouraging Catholics to stay and fight—and to do so on behalf of themselves, and their families, but especially on behalf of those who have suffered so grievously at the hands of wicked men. Copies of the letter (contained in a small booklet format) are located in the foyer of each church in our parish. Please take a copy and, after reading the letter, pass it on to other Catholics. Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
World, church, and local events continue to challenge our faith. This is all the more reason to continue to come together and find encouragement and hope in God’s word, sacraments, and our faith community. We are people of hope who are called to persevere, even in the midst of confusion and darkness, as we wait for what is to come. We are asked to repent, especially from our tendency to fall into doubt and despair. We are asked to repent and place our trust in Isaiah’s words that God’s world of innocence will be restored. We need to hear John the Baptist’s words today more than ever: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is a hand!” Rather than being disappointed by what human beings and world cannot give, let us commit anew to what God can and will provide.

Christmas Flower Offering:

Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception:
This feast day traditionally occurs on December 8 and is the patronal feast day for the United States. Because it falls on a Sunday this year it has been transferred to Monday, December 9, and it will not be a holy day of obligation. There will be a 9:00 a.m. Mass at St. James the Apostle in celebration of our country’s feast day.

Advent Concert:
The annual Advent concert, sponsored by the Trumansburg Area Churches (TAC), will take place this Sunday, December 8, at 4:00 p.m. in the Presbyterian church on Main Street, Trumansburg. Participating will be a number of our parish’s musicians, choir members, and song leaders who have prepared a selection of music for the concert. It is always a great and joyful event, so please come.

Angel Tree Tags:
The angel trees are up at both St. Francis and Holy Cross churches! If you take a child’s tag, the gifts must be returned no later than Sunday, December 8. All presents will be picked up Monday morning, December 9. Please do not wrap the gifts—parents need to see what has been given for their children, though wrapping paper, ribbons, or bows would be appreciated. You need to include the tag information where it can easily be seen. Distribution for gifts will be on Wednesday, December 11. If you have helped in the past you will be contacted for your assistance again. If you would like to volunteer for the first time please contact Gerry Frank at 869 5009.

Bakers Needed:
The Trumansburg Food Pantry needs over a dozen loaves of breads (banana, pumpkin, cranberry, etc.) for the Christmas distribution on December 16. Breads may be left in the St. James Pine Room after Mass on December 15. A sign-up list will be posted in the foyer. Thank you for all you do in support of the Food Pantry’s mission.
