Stay awake! With so many things competing for our attention and so many details to attend to, it is very easy to fall into a slumber. We can find ourselves simply going through the motions of life and losing a sense of purpose and direction. Busy with many things, we lose touch with the things of God, especially the gentle stirrings of His presence. Advent calls us to the challenge of living a wakeful life. Awake from the sleep that life’s demands can put on us, and allow God’s word to transform our hearts. Being ready for the coming of the Lord is life’s priority for the Christian. Let us walk in the light of the Lord!

The Season of Advent:
This Sunday, December 1, is the beginning of the Advent season. “Advent has a two-fold character, for it is a time of preparation for the Solemnities of Christmas, in which the First Coming of the Son of God to humanity is remembered, and like wise a time when, by remembrance of this, minds and hearts are led to look forward to Christ’s Second Coming at the end of time. For these two reasons, Advent is a period of devout and expectant delight” (from #39 of the Universal Norms on the Liturgical Year and the General Roman Calendar).

The Catholic University of America Collection:
There is a second collection today is in support of The Catholic University of America (CUA) in Washington, D.C. CUA is the national university for the Catholic Church in America.

Christmas Flower Offering:
In the boxes of offertory envelopes there is an envelope titled the “Christmas Flower Offering” and it is dated for November 30 and December 1. The Christmas flower offering collection will not be taken up this weekend. Instead there will be a second collection next weekend, December 7 and 8, for this purpose.

Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception:
This feast day traditionally occurs on December 8 and is the patronal feast day for the United States. Because it falls on a Sunday this year it has been transferred to Monday, December 9, and it will not be a holy day of obligation. There will be a 9:00 a.m. Mass at St. James the Apostle in celebration of our country’s feast day.

Advent Concert:
The annual Advent concert, sponsored by the Trumansburg Area Churches (TAC), will take place next Sunday, December 8, at 4:00 p.m. in the Presbyterian church on Main Street, Trumansburg. Participating will be a number of our parish’s musicians, choir members, and song leaders who have prepared a selection of music for the concert.

Food Pantry Collection:
Next weekend, December 8, as we do on the second Sunday of every month, parishioners are invited to contribute non-perishable food on the table placed in front of the Blessed Mother statue at St. James. The items will be donated to the Trumansburg Food Pantry. Monetary donations are also accepted. Checks should be made out to Mary, Mother of Mercy, with food pantry in the memo line. Thank you to all who contribute!

Bakers Needed:
The Trumansburg Food Pantry needs over a dozen loaves of breads (banana, pumpkin, cranberry, etc.) for the Christmas distribution on December 16. Breads may be left in the St. James Pine Room after Mass on December 15. A sign-up list will be posted in the foyer. Thank you for all you do in support of the Food Pantry’s mission.

Angel Tree Tags:
The angel trees are up at both St. Francis and Holy Cross churches! If you take a child’s tag, the gifts must be returned no later than Sunday, December 8. All presents will be picked up Monday morning, December 9. Please do not wrap the gifts—parents need to see what has been given for their children, though wrapping paper, ribbons, or bows would be appreciated. You need to include the tag information where it can easily be seen. Distribution for gifts will be on Wednesday, December 11. If you have helped in the past you will be contacted for your assistance again. If you would like to volunteer for the first time please contact Gerry Frank at 869 5009.

Hat, Scarf, and Mitten Tree:
The annual hat, scarf, and mitten tree has been set up in the foyer at St. James church. Please consider making a donation of new items, for all ages. These much needed winter items will be taken to Catholic Charities of Tompkins/Tioga Counties for distribution before Christmas.

Ring Those Bells:
The Salvation Army is looking for volunteers to ring the bell near the red bucket at the Shur-Save from the day after Thanksgiving through Christmas, any time between 7:00 a.m.–9:00 p.m. Most shifts are an hour in length; though feel free to stay longer. It is a great opportunity to meet your neighbors while helping those in need. The money raised will mainly be used in our local community. Share the Warmth:
The Trumansburg Rotary Club is sponsoring a collection bin on the front porch of the St. James rectory as part of their Share the Warmth campaign that runs through early December. Share the Warmth accepts all winter clothing in good repair: coats, snow pants, boots, hats, scarves, gloves, mittens, etc. Blankets also are welcome. All donations should be new or gently used, and clean for future recipients. Thank you to all who participate in sharing the warmth this winter.

Catholicism Classes:
The Catholicism Adult Formation Program was created by Bishop Robert Barron. Our parish classes are held on Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m. and again at 7:00 p.m., both at the St. Francis church annex in Interlaken. This Wednesday, December 4, the lesson is titled “Mary, the Mother of God.” Topics will include: the Immaculate Conception, the Assumption, Mary as the mother of the Church and mother of the new Covenant, and the “Magnificat.” There will be a half-hour presentation by Bishop Barron followed by a half-hour discussion. If you can’t make all the classes—come when you are able and when there is a topic of interest to you.

Daily Meditations for Advent:
The Word Among Us booklets are available in the foyer of each church. The booklet contains, among other things, meditations and Mass prayers and readings for each day of Advent. The booklets are costly, so whatever donations you can make toward the expense would be appreciated.

Changes in the Daily Mass Schedule:
Our parish presently has daily morning Mass on Tuesday through Friday, in different places and without a consistent time. The parish boundary from north to south is forty miles long. Parishioners in the north are hesitant to travel to our to attend daily Mass in Trumansburg and parishioners in the south are hesitant to travel to our parish church in Ovid. Therefore, some parishioners desiring to attend daily Mass do not do so because of the travelling distance. Added to this is the confusion that daily Mass is celebrated in three different churches in our parish and one church has a different time than the other two. To provide an equal opportunity for all parishioners and to eliminate the confusion regarding the place and time, and after consultation with the Worship Committee and the Parish Council, beginning January 2, 2020, the daily Mass (Tuesday through Friday) will be centrally located at St. Francis Solanus church, Interlaken, beginning at 8:30 a.m. The communion service will continue on Mondays at 9:00 a.m. at St. James. Parish Christmas Mass Schedule:
Christmas is on a Wednesday this year. Our schedule of Masses for the holiday begins on Christmas Eve with Mass at 4:30 p.m. at St. James, Trumansburg, and a 8:00 p.m. Mass at Holy Cross, Ovid. In anticipation of a challenging fiscal and fundraising environment in the coming year, the Diocese of Rochester is not increasing the Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA) 2019–2020 parish goals. While holding the overall CMA goal flat this year, the diocese is still committed to maintaining the usual level of services to the parishes. These include Catholic Charities, ministries to youth and young adults (faith formation, Catholic schools, campus ministry, CYO, etc.), seminarian and deacon education, and other CMA funded programs. It is important to remember that the CMA covers about 57% of the diocesan budget, not the entire diocesan budget.

To a Suffering Church:
Bishop Robert Barron has written a letter to Catholics who feel demoralized, scandalized, angry beyond words, and ready to quit because of the sexual abuse scandal in the Church. Many are asking “Why stay Catholic with so much scandal?” It is a compelling letter encouraging Catholics to stay and fight—and to do so on behalf of themselves, and their families, but especially on behalf of those who have suffered so grievously at the hands of wicked men. Copies of the letter (contained in a small booklet format) are located in the foyer of each church in our parish. Please take a copy and, after reading the letter, pass it on to other Catholics. Cancer Services Program (CSP):

Are we looking for Christ to be our earthly king or our eternal one? We often go back and forth with God on this question. What we find in the content of our prayer usually reveals the answer. Because life can be difficult, we may desire that God cushion our earthly experience a bit, make it more tolerable, remove the crosses, and do the miraculous. Preserving our earthly lives can take too much precedence and be of too much concern. Christ the eternal king offers a different promise and hope. The eternal king offers us a way through suffering and hardship to the greater glory to be revealed when our journey is completed in heaven. The eternal king is not the king of earthly comfort but the king who advocates for the poor, vulnerable, lost, broken, marginalized, and hurting. We are asked to become like the eternal king, Jesus Christ, both in this life and in the life to come.

Thanksgiving Holiday Prayer Service:
An ecumenical Thanksgiving service will be held this Sunday, November 24, at 3:00 p.m. at Holy Cross church in Ovid. Participating will be the Interlaken Reformed church, Ovid Federation church, Christ Episcopal church at Willard, and our parish of Mary, Mother of Mercy. That Sunday is also the Solemnity of Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. The worship service will include both themes: Christ the King and Thanksgiving. All are invited.

Bishop’s Vita Award:
Our own Mary Camobreco received a Vita Award from Bishop Salvatore R. Matano during the annual Respect Life Mass on October 6 at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Rochester. Vita Awards are given to people in the Diocese of Rochester whose actions reflect and promote the consistent life ethic—the principle that calls for all human life to be respected and affirmed, from conception until natural death. Mary, who attends both Immaculate Conception Church in Ithaca as well as St. James the Apostle in Trumansburg, became the founding director of Birthright in Ithaca in 1981—the first crisis pregnancy center ever for that city. She continued in that role as a volunteer for some thirty-four years before stepping down in 2015. She still helps out at the Birthright facility, located at 605 W. State St., Ithaca, two days per week. Mary said that when she sought to establish a local Birthright, “I told God if I could be an instrument in saving one life, it would be worth it.” As it has turned out, she said, thousands of young women have been helped—and in many instances, the lives of would-be aborted babies have been spared. Mary has gladly devoted herself to helping others, noting that she’s done so out of gratefulness for blessings in her own life. “I have been given so much,” she remarked. “I just thank God.”

God’s fidelity is at the heart of Scripture. Trusting in God’s all-encompassing and abiding presence is what true faith is really all about. We know that the world had a beginning, and we know that it will one day end. Trying to predict when that end will come or becoming too preoccupied with the business of others are futile endeavors. 2019-2020 Catholic Ministries Appeal:
The active phase of our parish Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA) campaign continues. By now, past CMA donors have received a special letter in the mail with a personalized pledge card. Thank you to everyone who has responded with a gift or pledge. As of November 8, fifteen parish families have pledged $3,475, which is 11.59% of our parish goal of $29,979. If you have not yet responded, please consider making a gift. What is primary is our parishioners’ participation. What is secondary is what is pledged. The CMA provides funding for important programs, services and ministries that strengthen our whole Church.

CMA Concerns:
You might hear it said: “I don’t want to give to the diocese or the CMA, I only want to give to my parish.” By giving to the CMA, you are supporting your parish. The CMA provides funding for services and programs provided to the parish that would be difficult to fund on its own. Additionally, the diocese is able to obtain lower rates on insurance, benefits, utilities, and other services based on economies of scale for all parishes that stand-alone congregations would not be able to negotiate. October Attendance and Collections:
On an average in the month of October there were 63 people at the 5:00 p.m. Mass at on Saturdays at St. Francis, and, on Sundays, 98 at the 9:00 a.m. Mass at St. James and 94 at the 10:30 a.m. Mass at Holy Cross. The average Mass collections during the month were: $823 at St. Francis, $859 at St. James, and $1,013 at Holy Cross. The October parish average weekly collection was $2,694. Parishioners participating through the WeShare online giving contributed $3,010. “Thank you all for your attendance and offerings.”

To a Suffering Church:
Bishop Robert Barron has written a letter to Catholics who feel demoralized, scandalized, angry beyond words, and ready to quit because of the sexual abuse scandal in the Church. Many are asking “Why stay Catholic with so much scandal?” It is a compelling letter encouraging Catholics to stay and fight—and to do so on behalf of themselves, and their families, but especially on behalf of those who have suffered so grievously at the hands of wicked men. Copies of the letter (contained in a small booklet format) are located in the foyer of each church in our parish. Please take a copy and, after reading the letter, pass it on to other Catholics. Catholicism Classes:
The Catholicism Adult Formation Program was created by Bishop Robert Barron to enhance and support the Church’s mission to evangelize and teach the content of the faith. The programs explains what Catholics believe and why. Our parish classes are held on Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m. and again at 7:00 p.m., both at the St. Francis church annex in Interlaken. The classes are for all parishioners, for those contemplating being Catholic, and for Catholics who have not celebrated the sacraments of Confirmation and/or Eucharist. Please join us!

Daily Meditations for Advent:
The Word Among Us booklets are available in the foyer of each church. The booklet contains, among other things, meditations and Mass prayers and readings for each day of Advent. The booklets are costly, so whatever donations you can make toward the expense would be appreciated.

Snow Days:
A reminder that if during the week a “snow day” for the local schools has been declared there will be no morning Mass or communion service that day.

Thanksgiving Holiday Service:
An ecumenical Thanksgiving service will be held on Sunday, November 24, at 3:00 p.m. at Holy Cross church in Ovid. Participating will be the Interlaken Reformed church, Ovid Federation church, Christ Episcopal church at Willard, and our parish of Mary, Mother of Mercy. That Sunday is also the Solemnity of Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. The worship service will include both themes: Christ the King and Thanksgiving. All are invited.

Ecumenical Choir:
If you would like to participate in the choir for the ecumenical Thanksgiving service on Sunday, November 24 (see above), please join our rehearsal on Thursday, November 21, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Holy Cross. In December there will be another ecumenical service in which you may also participate as part of the choir. The December 8 service is sponsored by the Trumansburg Area Churches (TAC) and will take place at the Presbyterian Church of Trumansburg. Share the Warmth:
The Trumansburg Rotary Club is sponsoring a collection bin on the front porch of the St. James rectory as part of their Share the Warmth campaign that runs through early December. Share the Warmth accepts all winter clothing in good repair: coats, snow pants, boots, hats, scarves, gloves, mittens, etc. Blankets also are welcome. All donations should be new or gently used, and clean for future recipients. Thank you to all who participate in sharing the warmth this winter.

Bishop’s Vita Award:
Our own Mary Camobreco was one of three people honored to receive the Vita Award from Bishop Salvatore R. Matano during the annual Respect Life Mass on October 6 at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Rochester. Vita Awards are given to people in the Diocese of Rochester whose actions reflect and promote the consistent life ethic—the principle that calls for all human life to be respected and affirmed, from conception until natural death. Mary, who attends both Immaculate Conception Church in Ithaca as well as St. James the Apostle in Trumansburg, became the founding director of Birthright in Ithaca in 1981—the first crisis pregnancy center ever for that city. She continued in that role as a volunteer for some thirty-four years before stepping down in 2015. She still helps out at the Birthright facility, located at 605 W. State St., Ithaca, two days per week. Mary said that when she sought to establish a local Birthright, “I told God if I could be an instrument in saving one life, it would be worth it.” As it has turned out, she said, thousands of young women have been helped—and in many instances, the lives of would-be aborted babies have been spared. Mary has gladly devoted herself to helping others, noting that she’s done so out of gratefulness for blessings in her own life. “I have been given so much,” she remarked. “I just thank God.”

Our God is a God of the living. In God, there is no death. While life certainly presents hardships and has its measure of suffering, God does not promise anyone, not even his own Son, a way around it. What He does promise is His abiding, all-sustaining presence as a source of courage and hope so that we can more gracefully and purposefully endure it. Our faith in the Gospel message of Jesus Christ reminds us to carry the hope of resurrection with us in all things. We must never lose sight of the fact that we are works in progress and that what we see and experience here is only the beginning of greater marvels to come. This is why people like St. Paul and others of great faith consider their sufferings as nothing compared to the glory yet to be revealed.

Today’s Second Collection:
The second collection this weekend is for the Archdiocese for the Military Services (AMS) throughout the U.S. St. John Paul II established the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS) in 1985. It is the only U.S. diocese responsible for the pastoral care of men and women serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, enrolled at a U.S. military academy, being treated as a patient at any of the 153 U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ Medical Centers, or working for the federal government beyond U.S. borders. AMS priests and deacons serve approximately 1.8 million Catholics across the world. All U.S. dioceses are faithfully served by the AMS, yet most Catholics still do no know about AMS, so continuing to increase awareness about and support for the AMS is both a critical challenge and opportunity. From the very beginnings of the faith and the early ministry of Our Lord, our church has depended on the faithful to provide their time and energy, skills and gifts in building the Kingdom of God. Without financial support, we could not continue the mission of the Church. The Body of Christ’s only real means of support is through the generosity of its members. Catholicism Adult Formation Program:
The Catholicism Adult Formation Program has been created by Bishop Robert Barron to enhance and support the Church’s mission to evangelize and teach the content of the faith. The program explains not only what Catholics believe and why, but also displays—in breathtaking visual detail—the richness of the Church’s global culture. During each lesson, you will be invited to listen to a presentation of the Church’s essential teaching and to travel with Bishop Barron around the globe to see the faith in the depths of its belief and practices. The classes are held on Wednesdays, with the same class at 9:30 a.m. and again at 7:00 p.m. in the St. Francis church annex, Interlaken. St. Jude Thaddeus Relic in Freeville:
There will be a special one-day mission on November 16 at Holy Cross parish, 375 George Road, Freeville. Please join Fr. Patrick Tobin, O.P., director of the Dominican Shrine of St. Jude Thaddeus, as he travels from Chicago to New York with the arm relic of St. Jude—the largest relic of an Apostle located outside of Europe! Share the Warmth:
The Trumansburg Rotary Club is sponsoring a collection bin on the front porch of the St. James rectory as part of their “ Share the Warmth” campaign that runs now through early December. Share the Warmth accepts all winter clothing in good repair: coats, snow pants, boots, hats, scarves, gloves, mittens, etc. Blankets also are welcome. Bishop’s Vita Award:
Our own Mary Camobreco was one of three people honored to receive the Vita Award from Bishop Salvatore R. Matano during the annual Respect Life Mass on October 6 at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Rochester. Vita Awards are given to people in the Diocese of Rochester whose actions reflect and promote the consistent life ethic—the principle that calls for all human life to be respected and affirmed, from conception until natural death. Mary, who attends both Immaculate Conception Church in Ithaca as well as St. James the Apostle in Trumansburg, became the founding director of Birthright in Ithaca in 1981—the first crisis pregnancy center ever for that city. She continued in that role for some thirty-four years before stepping down in 2015, serving on a volunteer basis the entire time. She still helps out at the Birthright facility, located at 605 W. State St., Ithaca, two days per week. Mary said that when she sought to establish a local Birthright, “I told God if I could be an instrument in saving one life, it would be worth it.” As it has turned out, she said, thousands of young women have been helped—and in many instances, the lives of would-be aborted babies have been spared. Mary has gladly devoted herself to helping others, noting that she’s done so out of gratefulness for blessings in her own life. “I have been given so much,” she remarked. “I just thank God.”

Prayers from the Sisters of St. Joseph:
The Sisters of St. Joseph have a prayer ministry and Sr. Dolores Bachman and Sr. Anne Marie Burns will be praying for our parish throughout 2019. Let us keep the sisters in our prayers as well.

Funeral:
Esther Thomas, 89, died on October 17, 2019. Her funeral service was held at Ness-Sibley Funeral Home on October 24.

Cemetery Fund Collection Today:
The parish has two cemeteries, Holy Cross in Ovid and St. James the Apostle in Trumansburg. They both operate with an annual deficit. Cemeteries must strive to maintain a fully funded Permanent Maintenance Fund but it is difficult to achieve this goal because the cemeteries do not have the opportunity to produce ongoing income to cover their costs. Your financial help is appreciated each year. A second collection in support of our parish cemeteries will be taken up this weekend, November 2 and 3.

Food Pantry Collection:
Next weekend, the second Sunday of every month, parishioners are invited to contribute non-perishable food on the table placed in front of the Blessed Mother statue at St. James. The items will be donated to the Trumansburg Food Pantry. Monetary donations are also accepted. Checks should be made out to Mary, Mother of Mercy, with food pantry in the memo line. Ecumenical Choir:
There will be an ecumenical Thanksgiving service on Sunday, November 24, at 3:00 p.m. in Holy Cross church in Ovid, complete with a choir. If you would like to participate in that choir, please join our rehearsal on Thursday, November 21, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Holy Cross. In December there will be another ecumenical service in which you may also participate as part of the choir. The December 8 service is sponsored by the Trumansburg Area Churches (TAC) and will take place at the Presbyterian Church of Trumansburg. Please join us as we prepare for both of these ecumenical holiday events in our communities.

Archdiocese for the Military Services:
St. John Paul II established the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS) in 1985. It is the only U.S. diocese responsible for the pastoral care of men and women serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, enrolled at a U.S. military academy, being treated as a patient at any of the 153 U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ Medical Centers, or working for the federal government beyond U.S. borders. AMS priests and deacons serve approximately 1.8 million Catholics across the world. All U.S. dioceses are faithful served by the AMS, yet most Catholics still do no know about AMS, so continuing to increase awareness about and support for the AMS is both a critical challenge and opportunity. The Archdiocese for the Military Services will be the beneficiary of a second collection being taken up next weekend, November 9–10.

All Souls’ Day Envelopes:
Saturday, November 2, was All Souls’ Day and it is a tradition to have All Souls’ Day envelopes for parishioners to record the names of their beloved deceased. All Souls’ Day envelopes may be found in the foyers of each church. Returned envelopes will be placed on the altar and remain there throughout the month of November. The envelopes may be deposited in the collection, left in the sacristy, or handed to either Fr. Bernard or Fr. Richard.

2019-2020 Catholic Ministries Appeal:
The active phase of our parish Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA) campaign continues. By now, past CMA donors have received a special letter in the mail with a personalized pledge card. The CMA provides funding for important programs, services and ministries that strengthen our whole Church. We need your financial support to reach our parish goal of $29, 979. CMA and Abuse Settlements:
The question has been raised: “How will the diocese pay for legal settlements associated with abuse if CMA funds are not used?” The response: As part of the diocesan reorganization plan, the diocese has created a fund with a pool of money from both diocesan assets and funds from insurance carriers. Catholicism Adult Formation Program:
The Catholicism Adult Formation Program is not a video lecture, Church history, or Scripture study; but an engaging and interesting formational program that uses the art, architecture, literature, music and all the treasures of the Catholic tradition to illuminate the timeless teachings of the Church. Parish Ministry Fair:
“We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us.” (Romans 12: 6) By our baptism we are called to share in the ministry of the Church, using the gifts and talents God has provided. Solemnity of All Saints:
This Friday, November 1, is the Solemnity of All Saints, commonly referred to as All Saints’ Day. It is a holy day of obligation that requires Catholics who have celebrated their first communion to attend Mass unless “gravely inconvenienced.” The times and places of Masses for this holy day are:

• Thursday, Vigil Mass at 6:00 p.m. at St. Francis Solanus;
• Friday, Mass at 9:00 a.m. at St. James the Apostle, and
• Mass, 6:00 p.m. at Holy Cross.

All Souls’ Day:
This Saturday, November 2, is All Souls’ Day. It is not a holy day but there will be a 9:00 a.m. Mass at St. Francis Solanus church. Another recommendation was given that parishioners encourage non-active parishioners to financially support their parish by participating in the on-line WeShare program. September Attendance and Collections:
On an average in the month of September there were 60 people at the 5:00 p.m. Mass, 90 at the 9:00 a.m. Mass, and 99 at the 10:30 a.m. Mass. The average Mass collections during this month were: $567 at the Saturday evening Mass at St. Francis and, on Sundays, $926 at the 9:00 a. m. Mass at St. James and $842 at the 10:30 a.m. Mass at Holy Cross. Parishioners participating through the WeShare online giving contributed $2,610. On September 8, at Fr. Bernard’s fiftieth ordination anniversary Mass, there were over 300 people in attendance and the collection amounted to $1,965. Thank you all for your attendance and offerings.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
As we live out our life of faith, it is easy to lose heart and lose confidence in God’s power and effective presence. We can fall into apathy. Given the immensity of the concerns that abound, we feel powerless and can become unmotivated to persevere. To combat this weariness, Jesus tells his friends to pray always. Persisting in prayer allows us to find the determination, strength, and conviction to continue on course even when presented with difficulties. If we are determined in our pursuit of God, we will eventually find God breaking through our darkness with the light of His presence, gifting us with contemplative sight so that we can see as He sees and love as He loves. It is only when we take on the person of Christ that we are able, with God’s help, to touch the world’s pain and loneliness.

2019-2020 Catholic Ministries Appeal:

CMA and Abuse Settlements:
All monies raised in the Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA) are to be used only for the programs, services, and ministries for which they are designated. No gifts to the CMA are used to satisfy legal fees or settlement costs associated with abuse. If the CMA funds are not available to meet sex abuse settlements, how will the diocese resolve those lawsuits? The answer is that, as part of the diocesan bankruptcy/reorganization plan, the diocese has created a settlement fund from other diocesan assets along with money provided by the church’s insurance carriers. Parish Ministry Fair:
“We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us.” (Romans 12: 6) By our baptism we are called to share in the ministry of the Church, using the gifts and talents God has provided. Catholicism Adult Formation Program:
The Catholicism Adult Formation Program has been created by Bishop Robert Barron to enhance and support the Church’s mission to evangelize and teach the content of the faith. Not a video lecture, Church history, or Scripture study, this engaging and interesting formational program uses the art, architecture, literature, music and all the treasures of the Catholic tradition to illuminate the timeless teachings of the Church. The program will explain not only what Catholics believe and why, but also display the richness of the Church’s global culture. During each lesson, you will be invited to listen to a presentation of the Church’s essential teaching and to travel with Bishop Barron around the globe to see the faith in the depths of its belief and practices. The classes will be held on Wednesdays beginning October 30 in the St. Francis church annex. The same class will be held at 10:00 a.m. and again at 7:00 p.m. The classes are for all parishioners from the north, south, and in between, as well as for those contemplating being Catholic or Catholics who have not yet celebrated the sacraments of Confirmation and/or Eucharist. Annual Financial Report:
The annual financial report was provided to parishioners at the beginning of October and copies are the report are still available in the foyers of the churches. The report showed that we had a deficit in our last fiscal year (July 1, 2018–June 30, 2019). In order to meet our ordinary expenses, a recommendation was given that active parishioners increase their weekly offering by at least $3.00. Another recommendation was given that parishioners encourage non-active parishioners to financially support their parish by participating in the on-line WeShare program. Whatever financial help you give, you have to know it is appreciated greatly.

Habitat House for Sale:
There is a Habitat for Humanity home available for sale in Trumansburg. When standing in a place of privilege, it is difficult to see all of the wonders, healings, and graces God bestows upon us. We can easily take God’s abiding, healing, and sustaining presence for granted in our lives if our sights are too focused on earthly pleasures, status, or concerns. Those who have less often have a greater appreciation for even the smallest of gifts and tiniest of blessings. We live in a world of entitlement, and this error of thinking that things are “due me” or “deserved by me” can distort and corrupt our vision. How many times a day are you truly thankful and filled with gratitude? Trumansburg Food Pantry:
Beginning January 1, 2020, there will be a need for a new volunteer coordinator for the Trumansburg Food Pantry. In the foyer of St. James the Apostle church there are flyers describing the role of the coordinator. Even though the position begins in January 2020, for planning purposes the need for someone is immediate. I know it is important and local, but after so many weeks without changes, can we drop this? Also, the job description may be changing soon.

Conference for Men of the Parish:

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
All of the violence and unrest we regularly witness in our world can easily distress us. We can also find ourselves wondering how long it will take before God intervenes and does something about it. Then we remember our call to discipleship and spreading the Good News of the Gospel. We recall the persecutions the early disciples endured and the fate of so many martyrs throughout history, both past and present. It is not God’s responsibility to fix our mess but ours. God has given us the power of love and a strength of endurance that comes from Him alone. Our request of God becomes that of the disciples: “Increase our faith.” It is our task to stand up for the values of the Gospel and live them regardless of the price.

Respect Life Sunday:
The annual Respect Life program is a year-round, nationwide effort to help Catholics understand, value, and become engaged with building a culture that cherishes every human life. A new cycle begins each October (Respect Life month) and continues through the following September. The 2019 observance of Respect Life Sunday is this Sunday, October 6. There is a Respect Life Mass at 11:15 a.m., on October 6 at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Rochester, with Bishop Salvatore R. Matano. Another part of the Respect Life initiative is what is called a “Life Chain.” Since 1987, Life Chains have taken place in hundreds of cities throughout America peacefully and silently praying for an end to abortion. Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
People often think that if they witness something miraculous, it would bring them to a greater faith and motivate them for greater involvement. Such is not necessarily true, as coming to a real and authentic faith still requires that we struggle with ourselves a bit and change our approach to living. Authentic faith is acquired when we see wisdom and life in the words of the prophets and in the teachings of Jesus Christ. All of these point us to a God who has a particular set of priorities for how life is meant to be lived. We have to avoid the trap of complacency that is rooted in preserving our own self-interests and living lives that pursue “righteousness, devotion, faith, love, patience, and gentleness.” (1 Tm. 6: 11) Complacency keeps us stuck in the status quo and prevents us from working toward respect for life, equality, and justice, and from advocating on behalf of the needs of the poor, the homeless, and the alien. Are you complacent?

August Attendance and Collections
On an average in the month of August there were 65 people at the 5:00 p.m. Mass, 111 at the 9:00 a.m. Mass, and 109 at the 10:30 a.m. Mass. The average Mass collections during the month were $907 at the Saturday evening Mass at St. Francis; and, on Sundays, $1,072 at the 9:00 a. m. Mass at St. James; and $856 at the 10:30 a.m. Mass at Holy Cross. Parishioners participating through the WeShare online giving contributed $1,835. “Thank you all for your attendance and offerings.”
