Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
“No servant can serve two masters.” We struggle with where we put and give our allegiance. Who has the ultimate authority and claim over us? While our minds want to answer “God,” our lives often reveal other conflicting allegiances. Because we are made in the image of God, we are not given a ticket of entitlement or privilege. On the contrary, we are given a level playing field where we are one among many and called to live just and trustworthy lives. To serve God is to serve others and to see the primary purpose and focus of our lives as being good stewards. As God lifts up the poor, so too do we. As much as we want the world and God to serve our own self advancement, we have to resist this temptation at all costs. Injustice has no place in the kingdom of God.

It was the best. It was fabulous. Over 300 people gathered under a huge and beautifully decorated tent on a wonderful Sunday (September 8) at St. Fidelis Friary to join me in praising God for the gift of priesthood and for 50 years of striving to be like Jesus in His service to God and His holy people. Special “thanks” to Kathy Sinkiewicz and Phyllis Motill, co-chairs of the event, and the many committee members and helpers who helped in arranging for the invitations, the tent and its location, the dishes and silverware, porta-potties, the electrical and sound system; the creation of over 200 parking spaces; the setting up of tables, chairs, and decorations; the musicians, cantors, and choir; the wine, beer, cold drinks, and water; the delicious appetizers and buffet; the cellist; the desserts; the band; and the people who cleaned-up and dismantled everything. “Thank you all” for providing this grand event. Thank you to all who were part of the over 300 people attending and for your expressions of gratitude and for the parish gift of a book of photos, from my grammar school days to the present. It is a real treasure. God bless you all and “thank you!” You are the best and you are fabulous.

Sacrament of Confirmation:
Students in grades 8–12 who have not celebrated the sacrament of Confirmation, along with their parents, are requested to attend an introductory meeting on Sunday, October 6, at 4:00 p.m. at St. James the Apostle church. Confirmation classes will begin on Sunday, October 20, at St. James. Conference for Men of the Parish:
The 2019 Rochester Catholic Men’s conference with the theme “Rebuilding the Family at Home and Through the Church” will take place Saturday, October 19, at St. Jude the Apostle church, 4100 Lyell Road, Rochester beginning at 8:30 a.m. Register at exultrochester.org. CROP Hunger Walk:

A Voice for the Voiceless:
Cayuga County Loves Life is planning a pro-life march on Saturday, September 28, at 1:00 p.m. The event will begin with a rally at Veterans Memorial Park located at 172 Genesee Street, Auburn, N.Y., followed with a march to Auburn’s City Hall. At City Hall there will be a program with keynote speaker Bryan Kemper, founder and president of Stand True Pro-Life Outreach and director of Youth Outreach at Priests for Life. The purpose of this march is to make people aware of New York State’s passage on January 22, 2019, of the “Reproductive Health Act” (RHA), which essentially has legalized abortion up until natural birth and made abortion a “fundamental right” in our state. Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
We all struggle with worshiping things that are not God. These are things that we place in our lives and reverence more than God himself. Things such as our self-image, power, status, possessions, securities, and even ideologies can be allowed to make great claims on us. Sometimes, who “god” is for us is what we make this “god” out to be. Our self-constructed gods serve little purpose, other than placating us and making us feel better about ourselves and our world. This is not the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, nor the God whom Jesus called Father. The true God challenges us out of our comfort zones and pushes us to discover our potential. But, He does so patiently and with great love. He knows how fickle we can be and is always eager to welcome us home.

Catholic Campaign for Human Development:
As Catholics we’re wonderful at charity work, providing food, clothing, housing, etc. for people in need. This is important, but it’s not enough; it doesn’t change the conditions that make people poor. Fifty years ago our U.S. bishops established the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) to fund efforts by low-income people to address the root cause of their poverty and oppression. CCHD has supported thousands of projects that empower people to improve their working and housing conditions, get better paying jobs, and stand up for their human dignity. YOU can be part of this effort by generously supporting the special collection for CCHD this weekend, September 14 an 15, at each of our parish churches. The funds collected will support major projects across the country and smaller local anti-poverty projects, right here in our diocese.

Religious Education Program:
Parents with children in grades 1 thru 7 will meet at St. James the Apostle church this Sunday, September 15 (Catechetical Sunday), at 6:00 p.m. Parents who have not yet done so may register their child(ren) at that time. The registration fee is $50 per family (financial assistance is available to those who may need it). At this first meeting Fr. Bernard will introduce the new Religious Education Coordinator, Susan Guydosh, and an outline of the faith formation program will be presented along with the distribution of educational materials. This year, students will use the “Sadlier Workbook” series and students will work with their parents on weekly lessons at home.

Classes are held Sunday afternoons at Saint James the Apostle church. Students must be in the eighth grade to begin but older students are also welcome. Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Hearing and listening are two different things. Even in our human relationships, people can hear what we are saying, but are they really listening? This is true with God as well. We hear God’s word as it comes to us through Sacred Scripture, but are we really listening to it? Listening requires a good dose of humility and openness to the one who is speaking. It requires that we free up some of our personal space so that we can be available and receptive to another person and to God. Listening does not require the use of words. We can listen to God through art, creation, the unfolding of life, and the human story. Truly listening to God provides us with the direction of where we need to go, how we are to live, what we are to choose, and what we must avoid. Listening prepares and anchors us. Are you listening?

CROP Hunger Walk:

Religious Education Program:
Religious Education registration is now open! The Parish Council’s Word Committee met with the new Religious Education Coordinator, Susan Guydosh, on August 6. Together they concluded that the program this year will be for students in grades 1–7; that it will begin on Catechetical Sunday, September 15, at St. James at 6:00 p.m.; and the textbook will be the “Sadlier Workbook” series. The latter decision was made after the committee looked at various on-line religious education programs and found them to be non-engaging. Like last year, students will work on a weekly lesson at home and there will be a monthly social gathering with all children and parents to review the lessons and discuss a religious topic relevant to the home studies. Registration forms are available in the foyers of each of the churches and on the parish website. The registration fee is $50 per family.

Classes for the Sacrament of Confirmation:
Confirmation classes for our high school students will resume in the fall. The program is a two-year course with a minimum of twenty-five class hours per year. Classes are held Sunday afternoons at Saint James the Apostle church. Students must be in the eighth grade to begin but older students are also welcome. If you are interested in having your student confirmed in our faith, please call the parish office (607-294-0064) to start the registration process as soon as possible so that study materials may be ordered for those who register.

Weekend Collection Counters:
This September the parish will lose two collection counters at St. Francis Solanus church. Parishioners willing and able to give two hours monthly for this important parish task are asked to please notify Fr. Bernard or phone the parish office (607-294-0064) as soon as possible.

Mass Intention Requests:
Parishioners requesting a Mass intention for a particular date and time can do so by completing the newly formulated “Mass Intentions Request Form” located in the foyer of each of our churches. Fiftieth Ordination Anniversary Celebration:
The Capuchin Franciscans, the parish, and Fr. Bernard’s family, relatives, and friends, will celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of Fr. Bernard’s ordination on September 8 at St. Fidelis Friary, 7790 County Road 153 in Interlaken. The celebration will begin with Sunday Mass at noon, followed by appetizers, buffet dinner, and music by Backtalk. Parish Fiscal Year Report:
The Finance Council met on August 23 and reviewed the end of the fiscal year report (the fiscal year ended on June 30, 2019). The ordinary operating revenues for our parish totaled $205,350.39 while the ordinary operating expenses amounted to $225,720.30, leaving the parish with a deficit of $20,369.91. During this past fiscal year the parish’s ordinary income decreased by $20,000 from the previous year. For example: weekend collections were down $13,000; monthly maintenance offerings were down $2,000; the Easter collection was down $1,200; and general donations and gifts were down $3,500. It should be noted that the ordinary income downward trend has been happening over the past several years. However, this past year, it was the worse it has ever been, creating the present operating deficit. A complete annual financial report will be distributed to the parish the weekend of October 6.

Developing healthy relationships with others requires discipline. This is also true of our relationship with God. As Christians, we are called to be like Christ. This does not just happen randomly or when it is convenient for us. It happens when we spend time with Christ every day and strive to be and think like him. This is no small task. It entails a willingness to see things, people, and God differently. Abandoning our self-focused needs and desires and putting on Christ is a challenging discipline to follow. However, if we choose to enter through the narrow gate of discipleship, we will find peace, live virtuous lives, and understand what it means to be saved. Resting and being cradled in God’s lap and enjoying His presence is where we really desire to be, even though we have to give up some things in order to do so.

We are hoping to get a variety of baked good, up to twenty donations from each church, to be on the dessert bar at the celebration. These can be homemade or store bought. There shouldn’t be more than four of the same item from each church. The desserts could be brought with you to the celebration or brought to the Friary on September 7 around noon when we will be setting up for the event.

July Attendance and Collections:
On an average in the month of July there were 68 people at the 5:00 p.m. Mass at St. Francis, 126 people at the 9:00 a.m. Mass at St. James, and 118 people at the 10:30 a.m. Mass at Holy Cross. The average Mass collections during this month were: $744 at the Saturday evening Mass; $1,101 at the 9:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday; and $797 at the 10:30 a.m. Mass that same day. Parishioners participating through the WeShare on line giving contributed $2,640. Thank you for all in attendance and for your offerings.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Our baptismal rite instructs the parents and godparents of the newly baptized children, “May they keep the flame of faith alive in their hearts.” Faith has often been associated with fire. While fire can be useful and welcomed as a source of light and warmth, it can also be devastating and destructive. The Gospel is very much like this. On the one hand, Jesus speaks of healing, liberty, mercy, and forgiveness. On the other, he challenges the secular mindset and ideology, risks opposition, and pushes people out of their comfort zones. We are more attracted to things that make us feel better about ourselves. Equipped with the flame of faith, are we willing to see the bigger picture and risk popularity and self-preservation in favor of the kingdom of God?

Classes for the Sacrament of Confirmation:
Confirmation classes for our high school students will resume in the fall. The program is a two-year course with a minimum of twenty-five class hours per year. Classes are held Sunday afternoons at Saint James the Apostle church. Students must be in the eighth grade to begin but older students are also welcome. If you are interested in having your student confirmed in our faith, please call the parish office (607-294-0064) to start the registration process as soon as possible so that study materials may be ordered for those who register.

Weekend Collection Counters:
This September the parish will lose two collection counters at St. Francis Solanus church. Parishioners willing and able to give two hours monthly for this important parish task are asked to please notify Fr. Bernard or phone the parish office (607-294-0064) as soon as possible.

Mass Intention Requests:
Parishioners requesting a Mass intention for a particular date and time can do so by completing the newly formulated “Mass Intentions Request Form” located in the foyer of each of our churches. Mass intentions may also be requested by speaking with Fr. Bernard and/or phoning the parish office (607-294-0064).

Fiftieth Ordination Anniversary Celebration:
We will celebrate, with the Capuchin Franciscans and Fr. Bernard’s family, relatives, and friends, the fiftieth anniversary of Fr. Bernard’s ordination on Sunday, September 8, at St. Fidelis Friary, 7790 County Road 153 in Interlaken. It will be begin with Sunday Mass at noon, followed by appetizers, buffet dinner, and music by Backtalk. The caterers need an accurate number of people attending so we are asking you to let us know by August 25 if you plan to attend. You may either sign up on the sign-up sheets in the back of the church, respond by email to , or by calling the parish office, 607-294-0064. Please be sure to indicate the number of people attending and your name. Help is Needed for the Celebration:
We are looking for donations of baked goods for the anniversary celebration. There is a sign-up sheet in the back of each church and we need to know by August 25. We are hoping to get a variety of baked good, up to twenty donations from each church, to be on the dessert bar at the celebration. These can be homemade or store bought. There shouldn’t be more than four of the same item from each church. The desserts could be brought with you to the celebration or brought to the Friary on September 7 around noon when we will be setting up for the event.

Conference for Men of the Parish:
The 2019 Rochester Catholic Men’s conference with the theme “Rebuilding the Family at Home and Through the Church” will take place Saturday, October 19, at St. Jude the Apostle church, 4100 Lyell Road, Rochester beginning at 8:30 a.m. Register at exultrochester.org. In the foyers of our parish churches there are posters and flyers announcing this event.

Walk for Suicide Prevention:
An “Out of the Darkness Walk” will be held on September 8 at Sampson State Park, Romulus, N.Y. Check-in time and registration is 11:00 a.m. and the walk will occur from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. The Seneca County Suicide Prevention Coalition sponsors this event. For those who have lost someone to suicide or in other sudden ways, know that there are open and anonymous group meetings: the first Monday of the month at Waterloo Public Library and the third Monday of the month at the Ovid Federated Church. Trumansburg Food Pantry:
Beginning January 1, 2020, there will be a need for a new volunteer coordinator for the Trumansburg Food Pantry. In the foyer of St. James the Apostle church there are flyers describing the role of the coordinator. Even though the position begins in January 2020, for planning purposes the need for someone is immediate.

Chicken BBQ for Notre Dame Bus:
On Sunday, August 18, there will be a delicious chicken BBQ dinner cooked by Fr. Joe Marcoux, pastor of St. Catherine of Siena church, at the Country Club of Ithaca (189 Pleasant Grove Road). Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for either dine-in or take-out. Chicken dinners are $10 per person and include chicken with all the sides, dessert, and drink. The event will also include raffles with fun prizes. All proceeds will be benefit the Notre Dame High School’s Ithaca bus. Notre Dame students will be on hand to serve you and give their thanks for the support of the bus, about to begin the eighth year of transporting students to Notre Dame!

Cancer Services Program (CSP):

Toiletries and Hygiene Products:
There is a basket in the vestibule of St. James church for donations of toiletries. The request comes from Catholic Charities which is in need of items like shampoo, toothpaste, diapers etc. The items will be transferred to the Catholic Charities office in Ithaca.

We are asked to be vigilant until our Master returns. Even though our faith tells us that Christ will come again and that our purpose and destiny is an eternal one, it is hard not to lose heart, grow weary, and become distracted. Remembering the stories of our faith and what God has done throughout history is one way of remaining fresh and focused. Celebrating, recalling, and making real and tangible again what God has done is what our community does liturgically each time we gather. As the author of Hebrews reminds us: Faith makes real what we hope for and is the evidence of things we cannot see. Let us take this time once again to remember and participate in what God has done and continues to do.

Holy Day of Obligation:
The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is this Thursday, August 15. It is a holy day of obligation, which means that Catholics who have celebrated their First Holy Communion are obliged to attend Mass. There will be a Vigil Mass on Wednesday, 6:00 p.m., at St. Francis Solanus, Interlaken, instead of the 9:00 a.m. Mass. On Thursday there will be a 9:00 a.m. Mass at St. James the Apostle, Trumansburg, and Mass at 6:00 p.m. at Holy Cross, Ovid, instead of at 8:30 a.m. This feast day of Mary came to be celebrated as early as the fifth century in the East and in Rome. School Supply Collection:
United Way of Seneca County runs a coordinated countywide effort to help local students through the 2019 “Fill the Bus” campaign that will run through August 14. The goal is to provide basic school supplies to students in need. Individuals, businesses, and organizations can collect supplies and both Holy Cross and Saint Francis Solanus churches are collection sites. On August 14 all donated items will be moved to the Fayette Fire Hall. Volunteers are needed on that day to help sort, organize, and deliver supplies to the area schools. Monetary donations are also welcome. Checks should be made to United Way of Seneca County.

How preoccupied and anxious are you over preserving and maintaining a particular standard of wealth? It is easy to develop an unhealthy relationship with our possessions and invest ourselves more in their protection and growth than in our relationship with God. Greed can overtake us, often without our immediate notice. Anxiety of heart can find us living more with sorrow and grief than with freedom and joy. We can never allow things to replace God, and we always have to keep our possessions and wealth in proper perspective. Once they begin to control us, we have a problem. Anxiety and worry can become our greatest sins. There is a joyful life to be discovered when we discover true faith!

Missionary Cooperative:
Deacon Kevin Carges of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith will join us this weekend, to share information about his charity “Eight 4 World Hope” that builds schools in impoverished rural communities of Jamaica. The majority of children who attend these schools live in conditions that are considered subhuman in America—broken down shacks with no running water or electricity. Often times the meal the children receive at the school is their only meal of the day. Together, through education, we can live the Gospel by lifting people out of the poverty they were born into. There will be a second collection today to help support Eight 4 World Hope.

Food Donations at St. James:
Next Sunday, and every second Sunday of the month, please bring non-perishable food items to St. James church. You may place the items in front of the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Monetary gifts are also welcome.

Weekend Collection Counters:
This September the parish will lose two collection counters at St. Francis Solanus church. Parishioners willing and able to give two hours monthly for this important parish task are asked to please notify Fr. Bernard or phone the parish office (607-294-0064) as soon as possible.

Mass Intention Requests:
Parishioners requesting a Mass intention for a particular date and time can do so by completing the newly formulated “Mass Intentions Request Form” located in the foyer of each of our churches. Transportation Corps:
The Seneca County Transportation Corps provides rides for residents of Seneca County who need help getting to medical and dental appointments and other health-related destinations. If you need such assistance, please call 315-333-2179.

Fiftieth Ordination Anniversary Celebration:
We will celebrate, with the Capuchin Franciscans and Fr. Bernard’s family and friends, the fiftieth anniversary of Fr. Bernard’s ordination on Sunday, September 8, at St. Fidelis Friary, 7790 County Road 153 in Interlaken. It will be begin with Sunday Mass at noon, followed by appetizers, buffet dinner, and music by Backtalk. The caterers need an accurate number of people attending so we are asking you to let us know by August 25 if you plan to attend. You may either sign up on the sign-up sheets in the back of the church, respond by email to , or by calling the parish office, 607-294-0064. Help is Needed for the Celebration:
We are looking for donations of baked goods for the anniversary celebration. There is a sign-up sheet in the back of each church and we need to know by August 25. We are hoping to get a variety of baked good, up to twenty donations from each church, to be on the dessert bar at the celebration. These can be homemade or store bought. There shouldn’t be more than four of the same item from each church. The desserts could be brought with you to the celebration or brought to the Friary on September 7 around noon when we will be setting up for the event.

School Supply Collection:
United Way of Seneca County runs a coordinated countywide effort to help local students through the 2019 “Fill the Bus” campaign which will run through August 14. The goal is to provide basic school supplies to students in need. Individuals, businesses, and organizations can collect supplies and both Holy Cross and Saint Francis Solanus churches are collection sites. On August 14 all donated items will be moved to the Fayette Fire Hall. Volunteers are needed on that day to help sort, organize, and deliver supplies to the area schools. Monetary donations are also welcome. Checks should be made to United Way of Seneca County.

Trumansburg Food Pantry:
Beginning January 1, 2020, there will be a need for a new volunteer coordinator for the Trumansburg Food Pantry. In the foyer of St. James the Apostle church there are flyers describing the role of the coordinator. Even though the position begins in January 2020, for planning purposes the need for someone is immediate.

You Made a Difference:
This winter, during public policy weekend, our parish collected signatures in support of the Farmworkers Fair Labor Practices Act. Over 10,300 signatures were collected around the diocese. We’re happy to report that the New York State legislature finally passed legislation to give farmworkers basic labor rights, including the right to form a union and bargain collectively and to have one day of rest per week! We had been advocating for farmworkers to get paid overtime as well; the final bill establishes overtime for farmworkers after 60 hours of work a week. This is still not equal with other workers, but it is a step forward. Thank you for standing with our sisters and brothers whose work feeds us.

We do not need to use a lot of words in order to pray well. Keeping things simple often works best, and it appears to be the form of prayer most preferred by Jesus. The simplicity of the Lord’s Prayer, the Our Father, gets quickly to the heart of all of our important relationships in life and sets us straight. Praying simply provides proper focus and helps us develop greater trust in God’s providential care. We never know how each day will unfold and cannot control a good measure of what happens to us. What we can control is the disposition we bring to life and how much we trust and hope in God’s desire to make all things new and right. Pray simply and listen deeply. Our Father is calling.

Funerals

• Dominick Badalamenti, 89, died on June 24, 2019. There was a funeral Mass at Holy Cross, Ovid, on July 2.
• Frank Elliot Brockman, 79, died on July 10, 2019. His funeral Mass was held at St. James the Apostle, Trumansburg, on July 17.

Missionary Cooperative:
Deacon Kevin Carges of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith will join us next weekend, August 3–4, to share a little bit about his charity “Eight 4 World Hope” that builds schools in impoverished rural communities of Jamaica. The majority of children who attend these schools live in conditions that are considered subhuman in America—broken down shacks with no running water or electricity. Often times the meal the children receive at the school is their only meal of the day. Together, through education, we can live the Gospel by lifting people out of the poverty they were born into. There will be a second collection to help support Eight 4 World Hope.

Sacrament of Confirmation Classes:
Confirmation classes for our high school students will resume in the fall. The program is a two-year course with a minimum of 25 class hours per year. Classes are held Sunday afternoons at Saint James the Apostle church. Students must be in the eighth grade to begin but older students are also welcome. Blessed Francis Solanus Casey:
The feast day for Blessed Francis Solanus Casey, OFM Cap., is this Tuesday, July 30. He was born of immigrants from Ireland in Oak Grove, WI, on November 25, 1870, and named Bernard Francis Casey. He joined the Capuchin Franciscans in January 1897 and was ordained a priest in July 1904. Because he lacked academic success, he was not granted faculties to preach doctrinal sermons or hear confessions. He ministered as a porter or doorman at friaries in Yonkers, New York City, and Detroit. He counseled people with spiritual, emotional, and physical struggles and was the instrument of many miraculous healings (a wonder-worker). He died in Detroit on July 31, 1957. In 1995 the Church gave him the title of “Venerable” and he was beatified on November 18, 2017.

June Attendance and Collections:
On an average in the month of June there were 64 people at the 5:00 p.m. Mass in Interlaken, and, on Sunday, 115 at the Mass in Trumansburg and 102 at the Mass in Ovid. We all have a tremendous amount of responsibility. Every day presents more challenges and lists of things we need to accomplish. Life, however, is more than just to do lists. Life is more about who we are and how present we are to what is happening around us. Our relationship with God is the same. It is not just about doing the right things or showing up in the right places, even though these are certainly important. What is more important is the quality of our presence in God’s presence. How attentive are we to His revelations of presence to us? If life’s demands, however noble they be, overly consume us, we will miss being surprised by God’s presence: in creation, in sacrament, in our brothers and sisters, and in ourselves. Mass and Ice Cream Social at St. James:
This Thursday, July 25, is the feast day of St. James the Apostle, patron saint of the parish’s Trumansburg church. St. James, sometimes called James the Greater, is the brother of John the Apostle and both were sons of Zebedee and were given the name “Sons of Thunder” by Jesus. James was the first of the twelve apostles to be martyred, being decapitated by order of Herod Arippa I around the year 44 A.D. He is the patron of pilgrims, laborers, Spain, Guatemala, and Nicaragua. The Parish of Mary, Mother of Mercy, will celebrate the feast day at St. James church with Mass at 7:00 p.m. followed by an ice cream social. Children of all ages love this event.

Thursday Morning Mass:
There will be no Mass this Thursday, July 25, at 8:30 a.m. at Holy Cross Church due to the feast day celebration of St. James the Apostle. Daily Mass that day will be at 7:00 p.m. at St. James followed by an ice cream social. All parishioners of Mary, Mother of Mercy, are most welcome!

Seneca Summer Music Festival Orchestra:
This Sunday, July 21, at 3:00 p.m., the Seneca Summer Music Festival Orchestra will perform a diverse selection of classical music at the South Seneca High School in Ovid. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted. All proceeds will go to the Special Olympics of New York.

Ithaca Loves Life:
Monthly prayer vigils for life are held every fourth Saturday of the month, from 9 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. These vigils are a peaceful, prayerful public witness to end abortion and to offer information to the abortion-minded. The next prayer vigil will be held on July 27 beginning at 9:00 a.m. Let’s unite and boldly come together in love for 90 minutes each month. For more information contact MaryAnne Tissot (315-246-4749) or Carolann Darling (607-351-6668).

Fiftieth Ordination Anniversary Celebration:
We will celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of Fr. Bernard’s ordination on Sunday, September 8, at St. Fidelis Friary, 7790 County Road 153 in Interlaken. It will be begin with Sunday Mass at noon, followed by appetizers, buffet dinner, and music by Backtalk. The caterers need an accurate number of people attending so we are asking you to let us know by August 25 if you plan to attend. You may either sign up on the sign-up sheets in the back of the church, respond by email to , or by calling the parish office, 607-294-0064. Please be sure to indicate the number of people attending and your name. For those who will not be attending the anniversary Mass our regular Mass schedule will still be in effect: 5:00 p.m. on Saturday at St. Francis and, on Sunday, 9:00 a.m. at St. James and 10:30 a.m. at Holy Cross.

Help is Needed for the Celebration:
We are looking for donations of baked goods for the anniversary celebration. There is a sign-up sheet in the back of each church and we need to know by August 25. We are hoping to get a variety of baked good, up to twenty donations from each church, to be on the dessert bar at the celebration. These can be homemade or store bought. There shouldn’t be more than four of the same item from each church. The desserts could be brought with you to the celebration or brought to the Friary on September 7 around noon when we will be setting up for the event.

Thank You:
Rev. Robert C. Bradler, diocesan director of the Society For the Propagation of the Faith, sent a letter of gratitude to the parish for our financial support of the missionary Sisters of St. Joseph and Sisters of Mercy working in Brazil and Chile. The collection was taken up in the church on the weekend of May 19 and amounted to $783.00. In giving testimony to their efforts the sisters said, “If it were not for the generosity of the good people of this diocese, we could not accomplish our work.”

Annual Summer Festival:
The parish of St. Francis and St. Clare in Waterloo is having their annual summer festival on July 25, 26 and 27, rain or shine as it is under a tent. Admission and entertainment is free. Food booths open at 5:00 p.m. and game booths open at 6:15 p.m. Total cash prize drawings: $17,800.

Trumansburg Food Pantry:
Beginning January 1, 2020, there will be a need for a new volunteer coordinator for the Trumansburg Food Pantry. In the foyer of St. James the Apostle church there are flyers describing the role of the coordinator. Even though the position begins in January 2020, for planning purposes the need for someone is immediate.

Lakeside Retreats at Branches:
Take time for rest and prayer at some of the Branches retreat days this summer. In “Contemplating Christ with Mary,” on Tuesday, July 23, Sr. Kathleen Murphy, OSF, will guide participants in contemplation of Christ through the beautiful mysteries of light. On Friday, August 9, Ann Kern will facilitate “The Little Way of St. Therese of Lisieux,” focusing on the simple life and intense love of God of this doctor of the Church and beloved saint who has inspired thousands. “Interior Castle: A Spiritual Journey Within” will be facilitated by Lena Shipley on August 16. Branches Rest and Renewal Center is located on Seneca Lake. A Family Musical:
Please join the Encore Players for their summer musical production of Ian Fleming’s Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. You Made a Difference:
This winter, during public policy weekend, our parish collected signatures in support of the Farmworkers Fair Labor Practices Act. Over 10,300 signatures were collected around the diocese. We’re happy to report that the New York State legislature finally passed legislation to give farmworkers basic labor rights, including the right to form a union and bargain collectively and to have one day of rest per week! We had been advocating for farmworkers to get paid overtime as well; the final bill establishes overtime for farmworkers after 60 hours of work a week. This is still not equal with other workers, but it is a step forward. Thank you for standing with our sisters and brothers whose work feeds us.

Support Group:
Many people who have suddenly lost a family member, friend, classmate, or colleague to suicide find that sharing openly with fellow survivors about what they have lived through can help with the healing process. The Sudden Loss/After Suicide Support Group meets monthly on the third Monday at the Ovid Federated Church, 7137 Main St., and on the first Monday at Waterloo Library, 31 E. Many people who have suddenly lost a family member, friend, classmate or colleague find that sharing openly with fellow survivors about what they have lived through can help with the healing process. The Seneca County Suicide Prevention Coalition hosts twice-monthly support groups which meet in Waterloo and Ovid for convenience of the entire community. These groups are held on the first- and third- Monday of every month; and provide people who are survivors of loss or survivors of suicide the opportunity to talk in an open and inclusive environment, free of judgment or stigma. The Waterloo Public Library plays host on the first Monday of every month and the Ovid session takes place on the third Monday at the Ovid Federated Church. Pregnancy Care Center of the Finger Lakes:
Pregnancy Care Center of the Finger Lakes, located at 551 Exchange St. in Geneva, is offering a “Forgiven and Set Free” post abortive ten-week session beginning October 4 until December 13. Cancer Services Program (CSP):
Cortland and Tompkins Counties offer free cancer screenings to those who are uninsured or have health insurance that does not cover these screenings. The screening services are provided in local health centers, doctors’ offices, and hospitals. For more information, contact CSP at 866 442 2262.

Toiletries and Hygiene Products:
There is a basket in the vestibule of St. James church for donations of toiletries. The request comes from Catholic Charities which is in need of items like shampoo, toothpaste, diapers etc. The items will be transferred to the Catholic Charities office in Ithaca.
