Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
This Gaudete Sunday calls us to rejoice because the Lord is near. Does your heart rejoice and sing, or are the pressures and burdens of life weighing you down? We can easily become overwhelmed. The weaknesses and sins of life, indeed our own weakness and sin, eat away at the joy and hope God wants us to know. Those who are grounded in their faith and possess deep spiritual lives know that God is near. Realizing this puts life into perspective. We really want to be free from our burdens but do not always know how to achieve this. We keep stumbling and falling. Advent is a time when we can learn to “do life differently,” just like John the Baptist instructed the crowds. Joy and hope are the gifts God offers, not anxiety and despair.

The Season of Advent and Reconciliation:
During the season of Advent, the celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) will be celebrated in each church after each of the weekend Masses. The sacrament is also celebrated on Fridays at 6:30 p.m. in St. Francis Solanus church.

Catholic Ministries Appeal:
The 2018–2019 Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA) report of December 4 stated that eighty-five parish households have pledged $22,362, nearly 75% toward our given parish goal of $29,979. Thank you. If you have not yet responded, please consider your financial participation. In the vestibule of the churches there are CMA pledge envelopes. CMA has produced an extraordinary video in connection with this year’s Appeal. It is posted to the diocesan website (www.dor.org) and the CMA page (www.dor/org/cma).

Christmas Masses:
Our Parish of Mary, Mother of Mercy will have three Christmas Masses. There will be two on Christmas Eve:

4:30 p.m. at St. James the Apostle, with children participating, and

8:00 p.m. at Holy Cross.

There will be one on Christmas day:

9:30 a.m. at St. Francis Solanus.

Please spread the word and plan now as to which Mass you will attend.

2019 church calendars are available in the church vestibules. Please take only one calendar per family.

Christmas Decorations at St. Francis:
All are welcome after the 5:00 p.m. Mass on December 22 to help in the Christmas decoration of the church.

Bakers Needed:
The Trumansburg Food Pantry needs 15 loaves of breads (banana, pumpkin, cranberry, etc.) for the Christmas distribution at the Trumansburg Food Pantry on December 17. Breads may be left in the St. James pine room after Mass on December 16. There is a sign-up sheet in the foyer.

Hat, Scarf, and Mitten Tree:
The annual hat, scarf, and mitten tree has been set up in pine room at St. James. The request is for new items, for all ages. Items will be taken to Catholic Charities of Tompkins/Tioga Counties before Christmas. Please consider making a gift of a hat, scarf, or mittens for someone in need.

Card Ministry:
Card Ministry is a working group of the parish’s Witness Committee. They are looking for parishioners who would be interested in writing and sending cards to our home-bound or parish members in nursing home. As a member of this work group, you would send cards once a month to (currently) seventeen individuals. If you are interested please contact Marilynn Frank at .

Ring Those Bells:
Bell ringers are needed to help collect donations at the entrance to the Shur Save for the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle campaign. The Salvation Army provides invaluable assistance to Trumansburg community members in need throughout the year. Please contact Judy Robertson at 387-6488 if you can take a shift.

Shur Save Donations:
At the Shur Save there is a box into which you can donate food for the food pantry to distribute. If you contribute, please check the expiration date first as they cannot use food items that are past the printed date. We can never have enough food to distribute but it needs to be safe too. Thank you for your consideration of this request and any possible donations you might be able to make.

Deep Sense of Gratitude:
Rev. Robert C. Bradler, diocesan director for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, expressed a “…deep sense of gratitude” to the parish for the World Mission Sunday collection that amounted to $781. “Your people, through their prayers and generous response to World Mission Sunday, will enable Our Holy Father to each out to the countless number of people throughout the world who need our love and support.”

Grateful:
Anne Haus, coordinator of the Trumansburg Food Pantry, wrote: “The time of thanksgiving is here! I am grateful for all your church has done to make the Trumansburg Food Pantry an important ministry for helping our neighbors in need.”

November Attendance and Collections:
The average number of people at Mass on Saturdays in November, at the 5:00 p.m. at St. Francis, were 68, with an average collection of $597. On Sundays in November, at the 9:00 a.m. Mass at St. James, there were on average 104 people in attendance with a collection of $944. At the 10:30 a.m. Mass at Holy Cross there were generally 86 people with an average collection of $811.

Sisters of St. Joseph of Rochester:
The sisters have a prayer ministry and throughout 2018 Sister Anne Marie Burns will be praying for our parish and parishioners. Such an act of love offers us the opportunity to keep Sr. Anne Marie and the Sisters of St. Joseph in our prayers.

Pregnancy Care Center of the Finger Lakes:
Pregnancy Care Center of the Finger Lakes, located at 551 Exchange St. in Geneva, is offering a “Forgiven and Set Free” post abortive ten-week session beginning October 4 until December 13. There is no cost involved. “If you regret your abortion, you are not alone. Let us help you learn to forgive yourself. Cancer Services Program (CSP):
Cortland and Tompkins Counties offer free cancer screenings to those who are uninsured or have health insurance that does not cover these screenings. The screening services are provided in local health centers, doctors’ offices, and hospitals. For more information, contact CSP at 866 442 2262.

Toiletries and Hygiene Products:
There is a basket in the vestibule of St. James church for donations of toiletries. The request comes from Catholic Charities which is in need of items like shampoo, toothpaste, diapers etc. The items will be transferred to the Catholic Charities office in Ithaca.

Making straight the path of Christ is not only the vocation of John the Baptist but of every baptized believer. God desires to lead us with His mercy and justice. These are essentials in God’s kingdom and some of the gifts Christ’s future coming will bring. But our world’s systems do not place emphasis on these values. Wanting greater profits, downsizing companies in order to reduce expenses, using others for personal or corporate gain, and valuing institutions over people are just a few of the “values” we encounter every day. We are called to straighten the path to Christ. In a world that places value on things that are counter to our call, how do we respond? We need to learn to discern what is of real value and then take the risk of bringing it into the marketplace.

The Season of Advent and Reconciliation:

Family Activity for Advent:
A reverse Advent calendar is a creative way to help our local food pantries. Set out a box or basket near your kitchen and add one food item or personal care item to it each day of Advent. After Christmas donate the contents to your local food pantry.

Angel Tree Tags:
The angel trees are available at both St. Francis and Holy Cross churches. If you take a child’s tag, the unwrapped gifts, with tags included, must be returned no later than Sunday, December 9. All presents will be picked up Monday morning, December 10. Wrapping paper, ribbon, or bows would be appreciated.

Share the Warmth:
Donate coats, gloves, mittens, hats, scarves and boots into the “Share the Warmth” collection bins placed around the area, including one in the St. James the Apostle parking lot. Catholic Charities will be distributing the items for free, during the first two weeks of December. Volunteer to help distribute the items. Blue Christmas Service:
Mecklenburg United Methodist church will again be hosting a “Blue Christmas” service on Sunday, December 9, at 3:00 p.m. Christmas can be a hard time for many reasons, and this will be a time of reflection, when all come together, accepting the emotions and challenges of the season, finding comfort and even hope. The service will include readings and music with a simple reception to follow. All are welcome!

Winter Concert:
The Trumansburg Community Chorus will present a winter concert on Friday, December 14, at 7:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Ulysses, 69 East Main St, Trumansburg. Admission is free, though donations to support the on-going activities of the chorus are gratefully accepted.

As we begin our Advent journey in preparation for the celebration of Christ’s birth and in anticipation of his coming again in glory, we are reminded of our need to be vigilant and prepared. This short season of Advent can be a mini-retreat for us who find ourselves living in a world that is often counterproductive to developing mature, focused, and meaningful relationships with God. Being a Christian and standing firm in our faith requires a strength that can only come from prayer. These four short preparatory weeks can help us look back to what God has done in history, to what God continues to do in our lives today, and to what God promises for the future. May we use this Advent time wisely, calling us to greater holiness.

Joyce Ann Hurd, age 84, died on November 18, 2018. A graveside service was held for her on November 23 at St. James the Apostle Cemetery.

The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the patronal feast day of the United States, is this Saturday, December 8. Catholics are obliged to attend Mass on that day. There will be two Masses: a Vigil Mass on Friday evening at 6:00 p.m. at St. Francis Solanus and a 9:00 a.m. Mass on Saturday at St. James the Apostle.

Year after year, this concert has been a joy in the community.

In the boxes of offertory envelopes there is an envelope titled the “Christmas Flower Offering.” The date for the collection is today, December 2. Please deposit your Christmas flower offering envelope in the regular collection.

Ring those Bells:
Bell ringers are needed to help collect donations at the entrance to the Shur Save for the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle campaign. The Salvation Army provides invaluable assistance to Trumansburg community members in need throughout the year. Please contact Judy Robertson at 387-6488 if you can take a shift. Come add some music to your life while helping others.

Shur Save Donations:
At the Shur Save there is a box into which you can donate food for the food pantry to distribute. If you contribute, please check the expiration date first as they cannot use food items that are past the printed date. We can never have enough food to distribute but it needs to be safe too. Thank you for your consideration of this request and any possible donations you might be able to make.

Food Donations at St. James:
Next Sunday, please bring a non-perishable food item to church and place it on the table in front of the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Monetary gifts are also welcome. All will be shared with the T’burg food pantry.

Family Activity for Advent:
A reverse Advent calendar is a creative way to help our local food pantries. Set out a box or basket near your kitchen and add one food item or personal care item to it each day of Advent. After Christmas donate the contents to your local food pantry.

Free Christmas Tree:
St. Francis Solanus church has an artificial Christmas tree in good condition. If interested in providing it with a new home, please contact the parish office.

Share the Warmth Volunteers Needed:
Donate coats, gloves, mittens, hats, scarves, and boots to the annual “Share the Warmth” drive. Collection bins, including one in St. James the Apostle parking lot, have been placed around the area. Catholic Charities will be distributing the items for free during the first two weeks of December. Friendly volunteers are needed at Immaculate Conception School in Ithaca, to wait on customers and help them find the items they need. Two hour shifts are available, December 3–7 and 10–14, from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. It’s a great way to start Advent! Angel Tree Tags:
The angel trees are available at both St. Francis and Holy Cross churches. If you take a child’s tag, the unwrapped gifts, with tags included, must be returned no later than Sunday, December 9. All presents will be picked up Monday morning, December 10. Wrapping paper, ribbon, or bows would be appreciated. Distribution of the gifts is scheduled for Wednesday, December 12. Praying Your Way through Advent:
Begin your new liturgical year by preparing yourself spiritually for the birth of Christ by attending “Praying our Way through Advent” with Sr. Carole Proia, SSJ, and Nancy Lynch who will offer Advent practices that will enhance this time of anticipation. The day of prayer will take place on Tuesday, December 4, at Notre Dame Retreat House (5151 Foster Rd., Canandaigua, N.Y.), beginning at 9:00 a.m. and concluding at 3:00 p.m. There is a $25.00 fee payable day of the retreat that includes the conference, lunch, time for confessions, and Mass. Generous Parishioners:
Seventy-five people in our parish have generously responded with a gift or pledge to the diocese’s Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA). Their contributions or pledges come to $12,762 as of November 21, just over 42% of our goal of $29,979. If you have not yet responded, please consider your financial participation as the CMA provides funding for important programs, services, and ministries that strengthen our whole Church. In the vestibule of the churches there are CMA pledge envelopes. CMA has produced an extraordinary video in connection with this year’s appeal. It is posted to the diocesan website (www.dor.org). Maintenance Fund Collection:

Blue Christmas Service:
Mecklenburg United Methodist Church will again be hosting a Blue Christmas service on Sunday, December 9, at 3:00 p.m. All are welcome! Christmas can be a hard time for many reasons, and this will be a time of reflection, when all come together, accepting the emotions and challenges of the season, finding comfort and even hope. The service will include readings and music with a simple reception to follow. Cancer Services Program (CSP):

Toiletries and Hygiene Products:
There is a basket in the vestibule of St. James church for donations of toiletries. The request comes from Catholic Charities which is in need of items like shampoo, toothpaste, diapers etc. The items will be transferred to the Catholic Charities office in Ithaca.

We live in interesting times. Life is constantly changing. While this can be exciting on one hand, change also presents challenges. We live in an age of relativism where people can pick and choose the truths that suit them and build their own system of beliefs. While humans certainly have the freedom to choose, losing sight of long-standing universal truths is not such a healthy course. Jesus Christ our King is our universal truth! He is the God who is nonnegotiable, our non-option! In Christ, we know what truth is. He alone points us to God, our true selves, our proper relationships with one another, and the world in which we live. Christ directs us to the poor and vulnerable and teaches us what God’s kingdom is meant to be. Christ is the king who serves others. He gets dirty. He ascends the throne of the cross. We are called to do the same.

There will be a holiday bazaar at the Jacksonville Community United Methodist church on Trumansburg Road on November 24 from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. The bazaar includes a visit from Santa, lunch, and many unique vendors and handcrafted items.

Advent Concert:
The annual Advent Concert sponsored by the Trumansburg Area Churches (TAC) will take place on Sunday, December 2, at 4:00 p.m. in the Presbyterian church, 69 East Main St., Trumansburg. All are welcome. Members of our parish will be participating and the final practice for the parish’s guitar group will be on November 27 at 7:00 p.m. in St. James the Apostle church.

Ceremony of Remembrance:
For those who have experienced the death of a child, sibling, or grandchild of any age, you are invited to join a “Ceremony of Remembrance” on December 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the Church of the Transfiguration, 50 West Bloomfield Road, Pittsford, N.Y. The ceremony will include each child’s name being read during a candle lighting, along with poetry and music. Share the Warmth in T’burg:
The Trumansburg Rotary Club has placed a collection bin in the St. James parking lot for their “Share the Warmth” campaign. They are collecting winter coats, boots, blankets, and other warm items for distribution through Catholic Charities in Ithaca. This season’s campaign will end December 9. The Rotary Club will gather donations as they arrive, then remove the bin at the end of the campaign.

Enjoy Your Pies:
People who purchased pies to help raise money for the annual Trumansburg area Christmas Bureau can pick up their pies at the church where they were ordered. They will be available after Mass on November 17 and November 18. Thank you and God bless you!

Ecumenical Service:
There will be an ecumenical Thanksgiving service at the Interlaken Reformed Church at 3:00 p.m. on November 18. The parish choir of Mary, Mother of Mercy, will be participating, led by Joan Gelatt and featuring Ronnie Fairclough on guitar and Beth Bevers on violin. They will be joined by the Hector Presbyterian Church choir with Mark Brown as director; the Ovid Federated Church Bell Choir with Marcia Klue, director; and the Interlaken Reformed Church Choir directed by Beverly Feindt.

Lectors’ Meeting:
The General Instruction of the Roman Missal has items related to the ministry of lector. Those items will be shared together with a review of ministry procedures so all three churches in the parish will be in sync with one another. The meetings will be brief and will be held after the each weekend Mass at a date yet to be determined.

Average Mass Attendance in October:
On average in October, 69 people attended Mass at 5:00 p.m. on Saturdays at St. Francis Solanus. The average in October for the Sunday Masses were 98 parishioners at the 9:00 a.m. Mass at St. James and 94 at the 10:30 a.m. Mass at Holy Cross. Our numbers are dropping! Please invite a friend to join you at Mass.

Advent Concert:
The Trumansburg Area Churches (TAC) have scheduled the annual TAC Advent Concert for Sunday, December 2, at 4:00 p.m. in the Presbyterian church. In preparation for our parish participation, the parish guitar group will be practicing on Sundays after the 9:00 a.m. Mass. Those unable to make the Sunday practices are invited to practice on Tuesday, November 20 and 27, at 7:00 p.m. in St. James the Apostle church. Anyone interested is asked to please attend the Sunday or Tuesday rehearsals. All are welcome.

How Being Catholic Makes Me Risk Prison for Peace:
Local Catholic Clare Grady will give a presentation on why her faith motivates her to risk prison time to call attention to the immorality of nuclear weapons. Clare will be going on trial soon for protesting at a nuclear submarine base in Georgia. Her talk will take place on Sunday, November 18, at 10:15 a.m. in St. Catherine of Siena’s parish hall, (309 Siena Drive). Come learn about Catholic Church teaching on nuclear weapons and why Clare believes that the Gospel calls her to disarm them. This event is sponsored by Catholic Charities of Tompkins/Tioga.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
We are all generous, at least to some degree. Most of us when asked for something—whether it be our time, our talent, or our treasure—assess whether we can “afford” to fulfill the request and still preserve our own needs. Have we ever given the last bit of what we had knowing that we will have to do without so that someone else can benefit? We all tend to be a little covetous of our time, talent, and treasure. There are people throughout history who have given everything away only to find that they have received much more in return. St. Francis of Assisi is a prime witness. The Scriptures today bring us two widows who do the same. Do we see in people such as these examples of foolishness or wisdom, inspiration, and hope?

Share the Warmth in T’burg:
The Trumansburg Rotary Club placed a collection bin in the St. James parking lot for their “Share the Warmth” campaign. They are collecting winter coats, boots, blankets, and other warm items for distribution through Catholic Charities in Ithaca. This season’s campaign began on November 3 and will end December 9. The Rotary Club will gather donations as they arrive, then remove the bin at the end of the campaign.

Pies for Sale:
St. James church and the parish of Mary, Mother of Mercy, will hold its annual pie sale to raise money to participate in the annual Trumansburg area Christmas Bureau. Please buy a pie and help this worthy cause. Lectors’ Meeting:
The General Instruction of the Roman Missal has items related to the ministry of lector. Those items will be shared together with a review of ministry procedures so all three churches in the parish will be in sync with one another. The meeting will be brief and will be held after the weekend Mass on Sunday, November 18, at 10:00 a.m. at St. James the Apostle. This will be repeated after the Masses at St. Francis and Holy Cross at a later date. Lectors should plan to attend one of these meetings.

The Trumansburg Area Churches (TAC) have scheduled the annual TAC Advent Concert for Sunday, December 2, at 4:00 p.m. in the Presbyterian church. Annual Christmas Craft Show:
St. Francis-St. Clare parish in Waterloo will hold their annual Christmas craft show and luncheon on November 17 beginning at 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at 35 Center Street in Waterloo (former St. Mary School). Free coffee will be available between 8:00–9:00 a.m. Santa will be there between 9:00 until noon. Be sure to bring your camera! Parishioners will again bake their favorite Christmas cookies, which will be sold for $8.00 a pound. A homemade lunch menu will be available. Catholic Daughters will sell recycled jewelry at reasonable prices and raffles will be held for many variations of filled baskets along with a 50-50 raffle. How Being Catholic Makes Me Risk Prison for Peace:
Local Catholic Clare Grady will give two presentations on why her faith motivates her to risk prison time to call attention to the immorality of nuclear weapons. Clare will be going on trial soon for protesting at a nuclear submarine base in Georgia. Her talks will take place on Monday, November 12, at 12:45 p.m. in Immaculate Conception’s parish hall (corner of Geneva and Seneca Streets) and again on Sunday, November 18, at 10:15 a.m. in St. Catherine of Siena’s parish hall, (309 Siena Drive). Love of God and love of neighbor are intimately bound together. You cannot have one without the other. Who are my neighbor and how do I love them? It is easy to confess with our lips that we love our neighbor. But how does this get translated into action? Our neighbors are not only those who live around us or are most familiar to us. Everyone is our neighbor: those who are foreign to us, those who have come here illegally, those who have hurt us, those we envy, those we take for granted, and those who are poor. Embracing humanity in all of its forms is not always an easy task, and doing so can quickly take us out of our comfort zones. Working for justice, as God desires, often means adjusting how much I can have and sacrificing our wants and desires. The very image of God is on the faces of our neighbors, and our face can be found there as well. How much do we really love them?

Funeral:
Robert Victor Pezdek, 80, died October 18, 2018. His funeral Mass was on October 24 at St. James the Apostle church.

Second Collection for the Cemetery Fund:
The parish has two cemeteries, Holy Cross in Ovid and St. James the Apostle in Trumansburg. They both operate with an annual deficit. Cemeteries must strive to maintain a fully funded “Permanent Maintenance Fund.” It is difficult to achieve this goal because the cemeteries do not have the opportunity to produce ongoing income to cover their costs. Your financial help is appreciated each year. A second collection in support of our parish cemeteries will be taken up this weekend, November 3 and 4.

Fall Cemetery Cleanup:
Please have all previous seasonal decorations/flowers removed by November 9. Anything left may be disposed of as the cemetery staff deems appropriate.

Confirmation Formation Classes:

Religion Education / Formation Program:
“Our Family Based Religion Education Program,” is the title of a new program of religious education for families with children. It will begin this Sunday, October 28, at 6:00 p.m. at St. James the Apostle with a presentation by Mr. Rich Rasmussen, faith formation director at Immaculate Conception church in Ithaca, who will explain the program. Parents at that time will be able sign-up and register. Basically the “Our Family Based Religion Education Program” comprises one monthly student on-line learning experience (about thirty minutes) and one monthly gathering of all the families at the church for a meal and learning session (about an hour and a half). Please spread the word to all parish families with children with the encouragement to attend the October 28 meeting.

Holy Day of Obligation:
All Saints’ Day is this Thursday, November 1. The times and places of the Masses are:

• Wednesday, October 31, at 6:00 p.m. St. Francis Solanus, Interlaken;
• Thursday, November 1, at 9:00 a.m. at St. James the Apostle, Trumansburg; and
• Thursday November 1, at 6:00 p.m. at Holy Cross in Ovid.

A holy day of obligation requires that Catholics who have celebrated their first communion are obliged to attend Mass unless gravely inconvenienced. To enhance the celebration a social will follow each of the Masses. After the evening Masses pulled pork with rolls will be served and after the morning Mass there will be a coffee hour.

All Souls’ Day:
This Friday, November 2, is the Commemoration of all the Faithful Departed (it is not a holy day of obligation). There will be one Mass at 9:00 a.m. at St. James the Apostle. At the Mass the names of our beloved parishioners and others who have died within the year (November 3, 2017–November 2, 2018) will be proclaimed and a candle will be lit in their memory. All Souls’ Day envelopes were inserted in last weekend’s Sunday bulletin and an All Souls’ Day envelope is also in the boxes of offertory envelopes so you may list those dearly departed you want to remember. The envelopes will be placed on the altar on November 2 and remain there for the month of November. The deceased will be remembered and prayed for during this time.

Second Collection for the Cemetery Fund:
The parish has two cemeteries, Holy Cross in Ovid and St. James the Apostle in Trumansburg. They both operate with an annual deficit. Cemeteries must strive to maintain a fully funded “Permanent Maintenance Fund.” It is difficult to achieve this goal because the cemeteries do not have the opportunity to produce ongoing income to cover their costs. Your financial help is appreciated each year. A second collection in support of our parish cemeteries will be taken up next weekend, November 3 and 4.

Fall Cemetery Cleanup:
Please have all previous seasonal decorations/flowers removed by November 9. Anything left may be disposed of as the cemetery staff deems appropriate.

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion:
For those who were unable to attend the August 23 and September 15 gathering to receive updates on the ministry procedures and to receive the notes from the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, a make-up meeting has been scheduled for this Saturday, November 3, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Francis Solanus Church, Interlaken.

Lectors’ Meeting:
The General Instruction of the Roman Missal has items related to the ministry of lector. Those items will be shared together with a review of ministry procedures so all three churches in the parish will be in sync with one another. The meeting will be brief and will be held after the following weekend Masses: Saturday, November 10 at 6:00 p.m. at St. Francis Solanus; Sunday, November 11 at 11:30 a.m. at Holy Cross; and Sunday, November 18 at 10:00 a.m. at St. James the Apostle. Lectors should plan to attend one of those meetings.

2018-2019 Catholic Ministries Appeal:
The active phase of our parish Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA) campaign continues. Thank you to everyone in the parish who has responded with a gift or pledge so far amounting to $5,182. Our given parish goal this year is $29,979. If you have not yet responded, please consider your financial participation. During the next weeks, another letter and pledge form will be mailed to everyone who has not yet responded. The CMA provides funding for important programs, services, and ministries that strengthen our whole Church. We need your financial support to reach our potential. Thank you and please pray for the success of our efforts. CMA has produced an extraordinary video in connection with this year’s Appeal. Peace Week 2018:
In the midst of wars and violence, we are called to be peacemakers. Join with Catholics from around Tompkins County for the final event of our annual Peace Week. Sunday October 28, there will be a peace prayer service, beginning at 5:00 p.m. at Immaculate Conception church. There will be prayers and reflections on peace and non-violence and will also feature our uplifting inter-parish choir.

Gratitude:
Our parish has received a letter from Rev. Robert C. Bradler, diocesan director for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, expressing his deepest gratitude for our parish response of $1,406 for the 2018 Missionary Cooperation Appeal for the benefit of the Catholic Migrant Ministry on the weekend of August 4.

Share the Warmth in T’burg:
The Trumansburg Rotary Club will be placing a collection at St. James again this season for the “Share the Warmth” campaign. They are collecting winter coats, boots, blankets, and other warm items for distribution through Catholic Charities in Ithaca. This season’s campaign is scheduled to begin November 3. The Rotary Club will gather donations as they arrive, then remove the bin at the end of the campaign.

Pies for Sale:
St. James church and the parish of Mary, Mother of Mercy, will hold its annual pie sale to raise money to participate in the annual Trumansburg area Christmas Bureau. Please buy a pie and help this worthy cause. Pie orders and payment will be taken after the 5:00 p.m. Mass, on November 3 and November 10 at St. Francis Solanus and after the 9:00 a.m. Mass on November 4 and November 11 at St. James. Pies will be available to be picked up at the church where they were ordered, after the Mass on November 17 and November 18. Advent Concert:
The Trumansburg Area Churches (TAC) have scheduled Sunday, December 2, for the annual TAC Advent Concert being held at 4:00 p.m. at the Presbyterian church. In preparation for our parish participation, the parish guitar group will be practicing on Sundays after the 9:00 a.m. Mass and for those unable to make the Sunday practices all are invited to practice on three Tuesdays, (November 13, 20, and 27) at 7:00 p.m. in St. James the Apostle church. Anyone interested is asked to please attend the Sunday or Tuesday rehearsals. All are welcome.

Fr. Richard Crawley, OFM Cap.:
Several parishioners have been asking about Fr. Richard. Due to the priest shortage, the diocese has asked Fr. Richard to fill-in on weekends for priests at other parishes. November 18 is the next Sunday when he will be available help at our parish assuming, in the meantime, that he will not be asked to go some place else. Fr. Richard is a blessing and appreciated greatly in the diocese.

Discover Notre Dame High School:

Toiletries and Hygiene Products:
There is a basket in the vestibule of St. James church for donations of toiletries. The request comes from Catholic Charities which is in need of items like shampoo, toothpaste, diapers etc. The items will be transferred to the Catholic Charities office in Ithaca.

World Mission Sunday:
Today is World Mission Sunday. We celebrate this day by remembering the revitalizing mission at the heart of our Christian faith—to bring the Gospel to all! The collection today for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith ensures the work and service of the Mission Church, as it supports priests, and religious and lay leaders who offer the Lord’s mercy and concrete help to the most vulnerable communities in the Pope’s missions. Thank you for your generosity.

Holy Days of Obligation:
Throughout the year, there are six holy days of obligation, i.e. days on which all Catholics who have been initiated into the Sacrament of Holy Communion are obliged to attend Mass. In our parish, the times and places for those Masses will begin with a Vigil Mass the day before the holy day at 6:00 p.m. in St. Francis Solanus church, Interlaken. On the feast the day itself there will be a Mass at 9:00 a.m. in St. James the Apostle church in Trumansburg and another at 6:00 p.m. at Holy Cross church, Ovid. Our next holy day of obligation is All Saints Day, November 1.

All Souls’ Day Envelopes:
All Souls’ Day is November 2. It is a tradition is to have “All Souls’ Day” envelopes for parishioners to record the names of their beloved deceased. On November 2 the envelopes will be placed on the altar and remain there throughout the month. For this purpose All Souls’ Day envelopes will be inserted into the October 21 parish bulletin and are also in your boxes of offering envelopes. The envelopes may be deposited in the collection in time for All Souls’ Day.

Maintenance Person:
Our parish is in need of one person who would be on call for periodic maintenance jobs for each of our church buildings. Jobs could include things like painting, minor electrical or plumbing work, repair of kneelers, changing light bulbs, or other such tasks. If interested, or you know of someone who might a good candidate, please contact the parish office regarding this paid service.

2018-2019 Catholic Ministries Appeal:
Hopefully everyone has received the Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA) mailing and has had a chance to review the materials. The theme for this year’s campaign is “Sharing our Blessings.” The CMA affords each of us an opportunity to support the larger Church so that it can meet real needs throughout our diocese. Every gift is needed and important! If it is easier, you may make your gift online at www.dor.org/cma. You may also pay your pledge off in six installments by May 31. CMA envelopes are available in the back of each of our churches. CMA has produced an extraordinary video in connection with this year’s appeal that is posted to the diocesan website (www.dor.org). Our given parish goal this year is $29,979 which is $570 less than last year’s parish goal.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA):
This is a faith formational program for people interested learning more about Jesus Christ and His Church, with a leaning toward being baptized, confirmed, and celebrating Holy Communion. It is also for Catholics who have yet to celebrate the sacraments of Confirmation and/or Holy Communion and for Catholics who are interested in continuing with their religious education formation. The classes will be held on Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. in St. James the Apostle church’s pine room. All are welcome.

Winter Coat Collection:
The annual collection for winter coats in Seneca County is currently underway. The local distribution will take place at the Ovid VFW on Saturday, October 27, from 10:00 a.m. until noon. Warm winter coats are needed, from infant through adult sizes and the coats can be new or gently used and clean. The coats donated will be shared locally. Collection bins will be located at Holy Cross in the entry ramp and at St. Francis in the vestibule. We are in need of volunteers to help the children find their “perfect coat.” If you want to volunteer or need further information, please contact Gerry Frank at 607-869-5009.

Peace Week 2018:

• There will be a documentary on Monday, October 22, The Nuns, The Priests and the Bomb, about active resistance to nuclear weapons. Dinner will be served at 6:00 p.m. followed by the film screening and discussions beginning at 6:30 in St. Catherine of Siena’s Mahler Hall. A $5 donation helps to defray the cost of the food.
• The second event is on Wednesday, October 24, and will consist of a “Muslim-Catholic Dialogue” beginning at 7:00 p.m. at All Saints church. This is an opportunity to meet and learn from our Muslim neighbors as we talk together on how we can work together for peace.
• On Sunday October 28, there will be a Peace Prayer Service at 5:00 p.m. at Immaculate Conception church that will include prayers and reflections on peace and non-violence and featuring an uplifting inter-parish choir.

September Average Attendance:
The average attendance in September at our weekend Masses were 64 people at the Saturday, 5:00 p.m. Mass. On Sundays there were 116 parishioners at the 9:00 a.m. Mass and 99 at the 10:30 a.m. Mass. Our numbers are dropping! Please bring a friend to Mass.

Are we content and satisfied with the bare minimum and essentials of our faith, or do we desire excellence and proficiency? The Ten Commandments represent the minimum and, if we are honest with ourselves, are pretty easy to keep. The fullness of the Gospel, however, is another story. Truly living as Jesus taught often comes with great self-sacrifice, self-emptying, and possibly leaving the things of this world behind. Are we ready to pursue this kind of life? God wants us to live and love abundantly not superficially. Love asks that we extend ourselves beyond the status quo and the bare minimum and venture into that which is risky, countercultural, and even radical. What we possess can no longer be important. When Jesus laid this out before the rich young man, he went away sad because he had much. When Jesus lays it out before us, how do we react?

World Mission Sunday
Next weekend we will celebrate World Mission Sunday. Pope Francis invites the entire Church to support the mission dioceses in Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Latin America and Europe, where priests and religious and lay leaders serve the world’s most vulnerable communities. Please keep the Pope’s missions in your prayers, and be generous in next week’s collection of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith.

Holy Days of Obligation:
Throughout the year, there are six holy days of obligation, i.e. days on which all Catholics who have been initiated into the Sacrament of Holy Communion are obliged to attend Mass. In our parish, the times and places for those Masses will begin with a Vigil Mass the day before the holy day at 6:00 p.m. in St. Francis Solanus church, Interlaken. On the feast the day itself there will be a Mass at 9:00 a.m. in St. James the Apostle church in Trumansburg and another at 6:00 p.m. at Holy Cross church, Ovid. Our next holy day of obligation is All Saints Day, November 1.

Ovid Community Garden:
Individuals are welcome to rent raised 8 x 4 foot garden beds for $10.00 each. You must be a member of the garden to grow and pick produce. Please contact the STEPS (Seneca Towns Engaging People for Solutions) office at 607 403 0069 if you would like to become a member.

Workbook for Lectors:
Lectors are asked to please pick up the 2019 Workbook for Lectors located in the churches where you usually proclaim the word of God. Please take the book that has your name posted on the workbook.

Maintenance Person:
Our parish is in need of one person who would be on call for periodic maintenance jobs for each of our church buildings. Jobs could include things like painting, minor electrical or plumbing work, repair of kneelers, changing light bulbs, or other such tasks. If interested, or you know of someone who might a good candidate, please contact the parish office regarding this paid service.

2018-2019 Catholic Ministries Appeal:
Hopefully everyone has received the Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA) mailing and has had a chance to review the materials. The theme for this year’s campaign is “Sharing our Blessings.” The CMA affords each of us an opportunity to support the larger Church so that it can meet real needs throughout our diocese. Every gift is needed and important! If it is easier, you may make your gift online at www.dor.org/cma. You may also pay your pledge off in six installments by May 31. CMA envelopes are available in the back of each of our churches. CMA has produced an extraordinary video in connection with this year’s appeal that is posted to the diocesan website (www.dor.org). Our given parish goal this year is $29,979 which is $570 less than last year’s parish goal.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA):
This is a faith formational program for people interested learning more about Jesus Christ and His Church, with a leaning toward being baptized, confirmed, and celebrating Holy Communion. It is also for Catholics who have yet to celebrate the sacraments of Confirmation and/or Holy Communion and for Catholics who are interested in continuing with their religious education formation. The classes will be held on Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. in St. James the Apostle church’s pine room. All are welcome.

All Souls’ Day Envelopes:
All Souls’ Day is November 2. It is a tradition is to have “All Souls’ Day” envelopes for parishioners to record the names of their beloved deceased. On November 2 the envelopes will be placed on the altar and remain there throughout the month. For this purpose All Souls’ Day envelopes will be inserted into the October 21 parish bulletin and are also in your boxes of offering envelopes. The envelopes may be deposited in the collection in time for All Souls’ Day.

Prayer for Healing:
St. Catherine of Siena Parish will hold a “Prayer for Healing” on Friday, October 19, at 7 p.m. Through song, ritual action, and spoken prayer, we will ask God to heal those who have been victims of clerical abuse, pray for our Church in the midst of this crisis, and tap into the hope needed for the future. This prayer experience (not a Mass) is open to anyone of any denomination who would like to pray for healing.

Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty:
This year marks the thirtieth year for the local Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty (CROP) Hunger Walk and the thirtieth anniversary of the Trumansburg Food Pantry. The Crop Hunger Walk will take place this Sunday, October 14, and it will start and finish at the Trumansburg Methodist Church (site of the Food Pantry). Walker registration will be at 1:45 p.m. and the Walk will begin at 2:00 p.m. CROP is sponsored by the Ecumenical Church World Service—a way to give to our local pantry and share in viable hunger projects beyond our community. Plan to walk and begin now to ask people to sponsor you. If are unable to walk, please consider sponsoring a walker.

Winter Coat Collection:
The annual collection for winter coats in Seneca County is currently underway. The local distribution will take place at the Ovid VFW on Saturday, October 27, from 10:00 a.m. until noon. Warm winter coats are needed, from infant through adult sizes and the coats can be new or gently used and clean. The coats donated will be shared locally. Collection bins will be located at Holy Cross in the entry ramp and at St. Francis in the vestibule. We are in need of volunteers to help the children find their “perfect coat.” If you want to volunteer or need further information, please contact Gerry Frank at 607-869-5009.

Peace Week 2018:
In the midst of wars and violence, we are all called to be peacemakers. Join with Catholics from around Tompkins County this month for our annual Peace Week events to learn and pray together.

• There will be a documentary on Monday, October 22, The Nuns, The Priests and the Bomb, about active resistance to nuclear weapons. Dinner will be served at 6:00 p.m. followed by the film screening and discussions beginning at 6:30 in St. Catherine of Siena’s Mahler Hall. A $5 donation helps to defray the cost of the food.
• The second event is on Wednesday, October 24, and will consist of a “Muslim-Catholic Dialogue” beginning at 7:00 p.m. at All Saints church. This is an opportunity to meet and learn from our Muslim neighbors as we talk together on how we can work together for peace.
• On Sunday October 28, there will be a Peace Prayer Service at 5:00 p.m. at Immaculate Conception church that will include prayers and reflections on peace and non-violence and featuring an uplifting inter-parish choir.

Annual Empty Bowls Events:
There will be two “Empty Rice Bowl” events in our area. One is on October 16 at Our Lady of Peace Parish, Center Street, Geneva, and the second on October 24, at Sacred Heart Church, 90 Melrose Road, Auburn. Both events begin at 5:00 pm and run until 7:00 p.m. with a cost of $20.00 per ticket for adults or $10.00 per ticket for children under ten. Cost includes soup, bread, beverage, dessert, and a handmade ceramic bowl. Empty Bowls began in a Michigan High School classroom and has become a popular event to raise awareness of the effects of hunger and food insecurity. Participants walk away with a commemorative Empty Bowl that serves as a reminder that hunger does indeed exist in our community. Retreat:
A fall day of retreat at Notre Dame Retreat House (5151 Foster Rd., Canandaigua, NY) will take place on Tuesday, October 16 with the theme of “The Problem of Good and Evil in the Book of Job and How that can Apply to our Own Lives.” It will be presented by Fr. Frank Jones, C.Ss.R, rector/director of Notre Dame Retreat House. The retreat will begin at 9:00 a.m. with morning coffee and concludes at 3:00 p.m. There will be lunch and a reconciliation Mass as part of the conference activities. School Sisters of Notre Dame:
Celebrate 185 years of faithful service with the School Sisters of Notre Dame. In 1833, Blessed Theresa Gerhardinger founded the School Sisters of Notre Dame to educate young women. Since then, the sisters have expanded her initial provincial mission to deepen communion with God and transform the world through education at all stages of life. Sisters of St. Joseph of Rochester:
The sisters have a prayer ministry and throughout 2018 Sister Anne Marie Burns will be praying for our parish and parishioners. Such an act of love offers us the opportunity to keep Sr. Anne Marie and the Sisters of St. Joseph in our prayers.

Pregnancy Care Center of the Finger Lakes:
Pregnancy Care Center of the Finger Lakes, located at 551 Exchange St. in Geneva, is offering a “Forgiven and Set Free” post abortive ten-week session beginning October 4 until December 13. There is no cost involved. “If you regret your abortion, you are not alone. Let us help you learn to forgive yourself. Cancer Services Program (CSP):
Cortland and Tompkins Counties offer free cancer screenings to those who are uninsured or have health insurance that does not cover these screenings. The screening services are provided in local health centers, doctors’ offices, and hospitals. For more information, contact CSP at 866 442 2262.

Toiletries and Hygiene Products:
There is a basket in the vestibule of St. James church for donations of toiletries. The request comes from Catholic Charities which is in need of items like shampoo, toothpaste, diapers etc. The items will be transferred to the Catholic Charities office in Ithaca.
