Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
As a disciple, an extremely important question must always take precedence in decision-making. What does God want me to do? In discerning answers to life’s questions and difficulties, it doesn’t matter what humans permit or even what popular choice dictates. It is what God says that matters. God’s will is often dismissed, even by those who claim to believe in Him. We discern God’s will by developing a strong and mature prayer life, listening to Scripture and church teaching, consulting church tradition, paying attention to the rhythms of life, and seeking His presence in all we experience and observe. As Jesus realized in his final hours, it is “not my will but yours be done.” Are we ready to follow his example and give ourselves over to what God wants?

Maintenance Person:
Our parish is in need of one person who would be on call for periodic maintenance jobs for each of our church buildings. Jobs could include things like painting, minor electrical or plumbing work, repair of kneelers, changing light bulbs, or other such tasks. If interested, or you know of someone who might a good candidate, please contact the parish office regarding this paid service.

2018-2019 Catholic Ministries Appeal:
Hopefully everyone has received the Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA) mailing and has had a chance to review the materials. The theme for this year’s campaign is “Sharing our Blessings.” The CMA affords each of us an opportunity to support the larger Church so that it can meet real needs throughout our diocese. Every gift is needed and important! If it is easier, you may make your gift online at www.dor.org/cma. You may also pay your pledge off in six installments by May 31. CMA envelopes are available in the back of each of our churches. CMA has produced an extraordinary video in connection with this year’s appeal that is posted to the diocesan website (www.dor.org) and the CMA page (www.dor/org/cma). Our given parish goal this year is $29,979 which is $570 less than last year’s parish goal.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA):
This is a faith formational program for people interested learning more about Jesus Christ and His Church, with a leaning toward being baptized, confirmed, and celebrating Holy Communion. It is also for Catholics who have yet to celebrate the sacraments of Confirmation and/or Holy Communion and for Catholics who are interested in continuing with their religious education formation. The classes will be held on Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. in St. James the Apostle church’s pine room. All are welcome.

Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty:
This year marks the thirtieth year for the local Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty (CROP) Hunger Walk and the thirtieth anniversary of the Trumansburg Food Pantry. The Crop Hunger Walk will take place next Sunday, October 14, and it will start and finish at the Trumansburg Methodist Church (site of the Food Pantry). Walker registration will be at 1:45 p.m. and the Walk will begin at 2:00 p.m. CROP is sponsored by the Ecumenical Church World Service—a way to give to our local pantry and share in viable hunger projects beyond our community. Plan to walk and begin now to ask people to sponsor you. If are unable to walk, please consider sponsoring a walker.

Winter Coat Collection:
The annual collection for winter coats in Seneca County is currently underway. The local distribution will take place at the Ovid VFW on Saturday, October 27, from 10:00 a.m. until noon. Warm winter coats are needed, from infant through adult sizes and the coats can be new or gently used and clean. The coats donated will be shared locally. Collection bins will be located at Holy Cross in the entry ramp and at St. Francis in the vestibule. We are in need of volunteers to help the children find their “perfect coat.” If you want to volunteer or need further information, please contact Gerry Frank at 607-869-5009.

Annual Capuchin Dinner:
On October 23 the Capuchin Franciscans of the Province of St. Mary will be holding their annual dinner and would be very pleased if you could attend! The dinner will be at the Glen Island Harbour Club located in New Rochelle, NY. There are several ways to support the dinner even if you are unable to attend. Organ Concert:
The United Methodist Church in Trumansburg will have an organ concert on Saturday, October 13, at 4:00 p.m. The church has an 1862 Garret House organ, which is a tracker organ. Guest organists are Permelia and David Sears who specialize in nineteenth century tracker organs. Both have performed organ recitals across the Northeast. A freewill donation to benefit the Food Bank would be accepted.

Parish Choir:
In preparation for Thanksgiving ecumenical service, the TAC Advent concert, and Christmas liturgies, Joan Gelatt will have choir practices weekly on Tuesdays. Two practice times will be offered—one at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Cross and the other in the evening at a time and place to be determined. All are welcome to join in.

Annual Empty Bowls Events:
There will be two “Empty Rice Bowl” events in our area. One is on October 16 at Our Lady of Peace Parish, Center Street, Geneva, and the second on October 24, at Sacred Heart Church, 90 Melrose Road, Auburn. Both events begin at 5:00 pm and run until 7:00 p.m. with a cost of $20.00 per ticket for adults or $10.00 per ticket for children under ten. Cost includes soup, bread, beverage, dessert, and a handmade ceramic bowl. Empty Bowls began in a Michigan High School classroom and has become a popular event to raise awareness of the effects of hunger and food insecurity. Participants walk away with a commemorative Empty Bowl that serves as a reminder that hunger does indeed exist in our community. Catholic Men’s Conference:
Three nationally recognized speakers are due to headline the fourth-annual Rochester Catholic Men’s Conference, scheduled for Saturday, October 13. For the past four years, this annual conference has been highly successful in serving men throughout our diocese. This year’s conference will take place at St. Jude the Apostle parish, 4100 Lyell Road, Rochester, N.Y. from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Registration is currently open for the conference, which will feature “The Eucharist” as its theme. Retreat:
A fall day of retreat at Notre Dame Retreat House (5151 Foster Rd., Canandaigua, NY) will take place on Tuesday, October 16 with the theme of “The Problem of Good and Evil in the Book of Job and How that can Apply to our Own Lives.” It will be presented by Fr. Frank Jones, C.Ss.R, rector/director of Notre Dame Retreat House. The retreat will begin at 9:00 a.m. with morning coffee and concludes at 3:00 p.m. There will be lunch and a reconciliation Mass as part of the conference activities. School Sisters of Notre Dame:
Celebrate 185 years of faithful service with the School Sisters of Notre Dame. In 1833, Blessed Theresa Gerhardinger founded the School Sisters of Notre Dame to educate young women. Since then, the sisters have expanded her initial provincial mission to deepen communion with God and transform the world through education at all stages of life. Please join the sisters as they celebrate a special liturgy on October 28 at 1:30 p.m. at Sacred Heart Cathedral.

Ovid Community Garden:
Individuals are welcome to rent raised 8 x 4 foot garden beds for $10.00 each. You must be a member of the garden to grow and pick produce. Please contact the STEPS (Seneca Towns Engaging People for Solutions) office at 607 403 0069 if you would like to become a member.

Sisters of St. Joseph of Rochester:
The sisters have a prayer ministry and throughout 2018 Sister Anne Marie Burns will be praying for our parish and parishioners. Such an act of love offers us the opportunity to keep Sr. Anne Marie and the Sisters of St. Joseph in our prayers.

Pregnancy Care Center of the Finger Lakes:
Pregnancy Care Center of the Finger Lakes, located at 551 Exchange St. in Geneva, is offering a “Forgiven and Set Free” post abortive ten-week session beginning October 4 until December 13. There is no cost involved. “If you regret your abortion, you are not alone. Let us help you learn to forgive yourself. Cancer Services Program (CSP):
Cortland and Tompkins Counties offer free cancer screenings to those who are uninsured or have health insurance that does not cover these screenings. The screening services are provided in local health centers, doctors’ offices, and hospitals. For more information, contact CSP at 866 442 2262.

Toiletries and Hygiene Products:
There is a basket in the vestibule of St. James church for donations of toiletries. The request comes from Catholic Charities which is in need of items like shampoo, toothpaste, diapers etc. The items will be transferred to the Catholic Charities office in Ithaca.

Jesus replied, “Do not prevent him. For whoever is not against us is for us.” (Mk. 9:39a, 40)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Whoever is not against us is with us. Is your image of God bigger than the labels and categories into which we often place Him? God has been acting in our world from the beginning of time and has been intimately wedded to creation for thousands of years before the creation of humanity. Did you ever consider that God was present when dinosaurs traveled the earth? God’s presence surprises us, but He can be clearly seen when people, regardless of their faith or creed, rise to the occasion and do the right thing. We have seen this countless times throughout history when people have put their differences aside, sacrificing their own security and needs to help others. God is much larger than we make Him out to be. Try to be present and mindful and not miss God working in all moments of life. If we are not attentive, God’s presence can go unnoticed.

St. Francis of Assisi Day:
This Thursday, October 4, is the feast day for all Franciscans including the Capuchin Franciscans. The feast day Mass will be celebrated at Holy Cross church in Ovid at 8:30 a.m. It is traditional that on this feast day there be a blessing of animals. The blessing will take place at St. Francis Solanus Church, Interlaken, at 6:30 p.m. that same day. All are welcome to bring their pets for the blessing ceremony.

Free Chairs and a Tree:
St. Francis Solanus church has folding chairs that have not been used in recent years. If you are interested in having one or several, please contact the parish office. The church also has an artificial Christmas tree in good condition to give away.

“Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but the One who sent me.” (Mk. 9:37)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Humility is really a virtue that allows us to keep our relationships in proper order: God first, others second, and myself third. However, we all wrestle with our incompleteness, weakness, and imperfections. Passions and impulses from within can color how we view our lives and distort them. Who among us does not struggle with jealousy, envy, pride, and lust? Then, when we can’t have what we desire, we find ourselves angry, greedy, and taking more than we deserve. The downward spiral continues. Even Jesus’s disciples, who knew him better than most, argued about who was the greatest. Humbly seeking the wisdom that comes from God and His righteousness is the corrective we need in order to keep ourselves in check.

Reception of Holy Communion:
On occasion, communicants have taken the host and dipped it into the chalice to receive the Body and Blood of Christ, a practice called intinction. Our Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion have been instructed that, when an attempt is made by a communicant to dip the host into the chalice, the Eucharistic minister will put their hand over the cup to stop that action.

Ending Hunger One Step at a Time:
This year marks the thirtieth year for the local Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty (CROP) Hunger Walk and the thirtieth anniversary of the Trumansburg Food Pantry. The CROP Hunger Walk will take place on Sunday, October 14, and it will start and finish at the Trumansburg Methodist Church (site of the Food Pantry). Walker registration will be at 1:45 p.m. and the Walk will begin at 2:00 p.m. CROP is sponsored by the Ecumenical Church World Service—a way to give to our local pantry and share in viable hunger projects beyond our community. Average Attendance in August:
In August the three churches averaged the following number of people at Mass. On Saturday at the 5:00 p.m. Mass there were 76 people. On Sunday at the 9:00 a.m. Mass there were, on average, 138 people and, at the 10:30 a.m. Mass, 122 parishioners in attendance.

Diocesan Respect Life Mass
Please join Bishop Matano and the faithful from around the diocese to celebrate the Vigil Mass for Respect Life Sunday, sharing, through our presence, our respect for all human life. Annual Empty Bowls Events:
There will be two Empty Rice Bowl events in our area. One is on October 16 at Our Lady of Peace Parish, Center Street, Geneva, and the second on October 24, at Sacred Heart Church, 90 Melrose Road, Auburn Both events begin at 5:00 pm and run until 7:00 p.m. with a cost of $20.00 per ticket for adults or $10.00 per ticket for children under ten. Cost includes soup, bread, beverage, dessert, and a handmade ceramic bowl. Empty Bowls began in a Michigan High School classroom and has become a popular event to raise awareness of the effects of hunger and food insecurity. Participants walk away with a commemorative Empty Bowl that serves as a reminder that hunger does indeed exist in our community. Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Who do you say Jesus is? Some look to Jesus as the reliever of pain and suffering. We want to believe in a God who will take away the discomfort we are feeling and make things better. Frustration and even a lessening of faith can happen when we realize this is not happening. Jesus is the Christ. As the Christ, he is the one who shows us how to keep both the joys and sorrows of life in balance. There is no hopping, skipping, or jumping over suffering. It is a part of life. In addition to the physical pain we are asked to endure, living the Gospel can bring rejection and suffering as well. Jesus the Christ is the way, the truth, and the life. Do we have the desire and faith to follow him?

Parish Feast Day Celebration:
Last Sunday, September 9, we celebrated our parish feast day for Mary, Mother of Mercy, with a parish picnic. Weather wise, it was a cloudy and cool day (60 degrees) but fifty or more people braved the weather and met on the front lawn of St. Fidelis Friary, Interlaken, for an enjoyable prayer service in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary and a fun picnic afterwards. We thank all who came with their dishes to pass, including the ice cream social table. We thank the Fellowship Committee and the Liturgy Planning Committee for sponsoring the event. We “thank” Michelle Humulock, who chaired the event and made the arrangements for the purchase of the pulled pork (a big success) for the rolls, drinks, paper products, and all that goes into producing a successful picnic. We thank Tony Humulock, Michelle’s husband, for the delivery and set up. We “thank” Gerry Frank, Rick Willers, Mark Sinkiewicz, and all who helped deliver, set up, and take down the tables and chairs. The parish picnic ended up being an enjoyable afternoon and we are looking forward to next year’s parish feast day celebration.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
We often associate the word “healing” with something that produces dramatic, physical results: the blind see, the crippled walk, and the deaf hear. Witnessing such miraculous events is few and far between for most. Healing happens more frequently in very ordinary ways using very ordinary means. And we can all be God’s instruments for bringing it about. Kindness, love, mercy, and compassion can go a very long way. Treating people with kindness; being inclusive and welcoming of the poor, the weak, and the powerless; listening to another’s story and pain; offering compassion and love to those who have wronged us; avoiding hurtful criticisms, and watching our tongues. All can go a long way to changing and healing human hearts. There is power in love and kindness. Does this power not speak of someone greater than ourselves working in and through us?

Parish Picnic:
This Sunday, September 9, our parish will celebrate our patronal feast day of Mary, Mother of Mercy with a parish picnic. The picnic will be held in the front lawn pine grove at St. Fidelis Friary, 7790 County Road 153, Interlaken, N.Y. The picnic will begin at 1:00 p.m. with a prayer service honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary followed by a meal of pulled pork and rolls. Families are asked to bring a dish to pass. Soft drinks or water will be provided. Parking will be available behind and alongside the pine trees and walking will be kept to a minimum. Chairs and tables will be provided, however you might want to bring your own lawn chair. The boathouse will be open and it is your call if you wish to go swimming in Cayuga Lake.

Day of Penance by Priests:
On September 14 Bishop Matano has asked that all priests in the Diocese of Rochester join with him in observing the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross as a day of penance. Bishop Matano proposes that, as priests offer the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass on that day, we plead for the Lord’s mercy for the grave sins committed and remember especially the innocent victims of clergy sexual abuse. We will remember the faith of our people and ask for the purification of the Church and the renewal of the clergy. Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
In response to how the Pharisees and scribes lived their faith, Jesus said, “This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.” Both good and evil impulses come from our hearts. Which one has the upper hand depends on how well a person has taken on the mind and heart of God. How well we live our faith is determined by the same. As Pope Francis tells us, Jesus is present in all of our brothers and sisters, especially those who endure suffering like his own. Our world is full of tragedy, conflict, and suffering: slave labor, diseases, wars, terrorism, exploitation, famine, human trafficking. We cannot simply pay lip service to the evils of the world—we must act!

Parish Picnic:
Next Sunday, September 9, our parish will celebrate our patronal feast day of Mary, Mother of Mercy with a parish picnic. The picnic will be held in the front lawn pine grove at St. Fidelis Friary, 7790 County Road 153, Interlaken, N.Y. The picnic will begin at 1:00 p.m. with a prayer service honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary followed by a meal of pulled pork and rolls. Families are asked to bring a dish to pass. Soft drinks or water will be provided. Parking will be available behind and alongside the pine trees and walking will be kept to a minimum. Please bring a lawn chair. We hope to see you there.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Jesus’s teaching is hard and challenging. In fact, many who originally believed in him left and returned to their former way of life. They were not able to accept what he had to say or to make the changes that are necessary to conform their lives to the Gospel. We often water down our faith and make it more about securing our place in heaven than leading a life in pursuit of the kingdom of God. Following Jesus and living the Gospel require action now. The Gospel demands that we change the way we conduct the business of our lives. Sadly, many are still afraid of taking risks and cannot accept change. Are we really ready to venture forth into the unknown, or would we prefer to simply return to our old ways of doing things?

Bishops’ Call for a Pro-Life Novena:

“Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day.” (Jn. 6:54)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
“Show me what is physically different between a host that is consecrated and one that is not.” These are words that can be heard on the lips of anyone struggling with faith. Perhaps, they are heard on yours. Physical tests will reveal no difference. The difference is seen through faith. In one sense, it is simple. Either we believe that the risen Christ is present—soul and divinity—or we do not. The fruits of faith are the proof. In the Eucharist, God enters into the very depths of who we are. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion:
There will be a meeting for all parish Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion to review the procedures for the distribution of Holy Communion. July Average Mass Attendance:
During the month of July, 2018, the number of parishioners at the 5:00 p.m. Mass averaged 69; at the 9:00 a.m. Mass there were on average 137 parishioners in attendance; there were 123 on average attending the 10:30 a.m. Mass. Holy Day on Wednesday:
August 15 is the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and it is a holy day of obligation. The places and times of the Masses are: 9:00 a.m. at St. James the Apostle; 12:15 p.m. at St. Francis Solanus, and 7:00 p.m. at Holy Cross. After each Mass there will be a social gathering to enhance the celebration of the feast day.

Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary:
Louis and Theresa Iannone will celebrate their fiftieth wedding anniversary at the 5:00 p.m. vigil Mass at St. Francis Solanus this coming Saturday, August 18. They will recite their marriage vows to each other as they did fifty years ago and will receive the anniversary blessing.

School Supply Collection:
United Way of Seneca County coordinates a countywide effort to help local students through its “Fill the Bus” campaign, which ends on August 16. “Fill the Bus” goal is to provide basic school supplies for students in need. The churches in the Parish of Mary, Mother of Mercy, are among the collection sites. Volunteers are needed on August 16 at the Fayette Fire Hall, 4200 State Route 414, in Seneca Falls to help sort, organize, and deliver supplies to the area schools. Monetary donations are also welcome and checks should be made out to the United Way of Seneca County.

Their concerts include music of the sixteenth century and the well-known Hallelujah from Handel, Ave Maria from Gounod, as well as various French musical pieces. This choir of sixteen boys, ranging in age from ten to eighteen years old, is conducted by François Olivier, the Titular of the Choir Organ at the prestigious church St. Eustache at Paris (France).

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
What can I do to accomplish the works of God? This is a question every Christian must ask. Ultimately, we are asked to be the light of Christ for others. This calls us to be compassionate, forgiving, nonviolent, generous, concerned for the poor, and welcoming to strangers. These are often contrary to what the world values. We are asked to simplify our lives and become less self-focused so that others can share in God’s creation. We need help in order to fulfill this tall order. The Eucharist, the Body and Blood of Christ, which we celebrate today, is the way we are nourished so that we can fulfill this mission.

St. James the Apostle Food Donations:
Next Sunday, and every second Sunday of the month, please bring a non-perishable food item to church and place it on the table in the front of the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary at St. James. Monetary gifts are also welcome.

The parish received a letter from Rev. Robert C. Bradler, diocesan director for the Society of the Propagation of the Faith, thanking our parishioners for the financial gift of $855 in support of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Brazil and the Sisters of Mercy in Chile and their missionary efforts toward building up the Kingdom of God in those countries.

Lakeside Retreats:
Branches Christian Rest and Renewal Center, located on Seneca Lake, is offering two retreats in August. The first is on “Contemplating Christ with Mary,” and is facilitated by Sr. Kathleen Murphy, OSF, on Monday, August 6, from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. The second, on Wednesday, August 15, discusses “The Day of Apparitions—God’s Dialogue with His People through His Mother” and is facilitated by Lena Shipley. Canonization:
Archbishop Oscar Romero will be canonized a saint at a Vatican ceremony on October 14, 2018. He murdered in 1980 for speaking out against military oppression and denunciations of government killings and kidnappings in El Salvador, Central America. On one occasion, Archbishop Romero gave a Congressional address in Washington, D.C. pleading with the United States to end the shipment of military arms to El Salvador. The military arms enhanced the misery El Salvadorian people were experiencing and it was delaying the work toward peace making.

French Boys Choir Concert in Ithaca:
The French Boys Choir from Paris, France, will be performing in concert at Immaculate Conception Church in Ithaca on Monday, August 20, beginning at 2:00 p.m. Free donation. Their concerts include music of the sixteenth century and the well-known Hallelujah from Handel, Ave Maria from Gounod, as well as various French musical pieces. This choir of sixteen boys, ranging in age from 10 to 18 years old, is conducted by François Olivier, who is also the Titular of the Choir Organ at the prestigious church St. Eustache at Paris (France).
