Fourth Sunday of Lent ~ March 11, 2018

Year of the Eucharist June 18, 2017–June 3, 2018

B032Lent4_nat_1_qtr_EN_4c

First reading:
Early and often did the LORD, the God of their fathers, send his messengers to them, for he had compassion on his people and his dwelling place. (2 Chr. 36:15)

Psalm:
Let my tongue be silenced, if I ever forget you! (Ps. 137)

Second reading:
God, who is rich in mercy, because of the great love he had for us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, brought us to life with Christ—by grace you have been saved. (Eph. 2:4–5)

Gospel:
For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come toward the light, so that his works might not be exposed. But whoever lives the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God. (Jn. 3:20–21)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
If we continue to journey through life without genuine self-knowledge, without knowing how our relationships ought to be ordered and what truth is, the path we walk will always be only dimly lit. In fact, when we make the wrong choices or find ourselves forgetting who we are, we can easily find ourselves in darkness. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.” Jesus is the light that came into the darkness. It is not enough for us to simply believe that Jesus is the Christ but we must live our lives in witness to this truth. The choices we make and the priorities we establish are going to either speak of someone who really does not care, someone who is confused, or someone who is wholeheartedly convinced of God’s love. Which are you?

Thanks to all who have made a pledge to this most needed appeal.

YearofEucharist_150_LOGO (1)Year of the Eucharist:
The following is taken from Bishop Salvatore R. Matano’s pastoral letter announcing a “Year of the Eucharist” in celebration of the 150 (sesquicentennial) anniversary of the diocese. “As I wrote in the letter of promulgation for the Diocese of Rochester’s Policies for the Administration of the Sacraments, how difficult it would be to try to ‘go it alone’—to make sense of this life ‘on our own.’ But the Christ of the Eucharist has not left us orphans; He has called us by name. Our Lord has extended the invitation: ‘Come to me all you who find life burdensome, and I will refresh your souls!’ (Matthew 11:28). As a diocesan family, let us respond to Christ’s invitation and open our hearts to Him present in the gift eternal, the gift of life, the Most Holy Eucharist… United in faith and invoking the intercession of Mary, our Mothers, and St. John Fisher, parton of our diocese, I remain Devotedly yours in Christ, Salvatore R. Matano, Bishop of Rochester.” The complete letter from the bishop is available on the diocese web page.

Thank You:
The director of the South Seneca Ecumenical Food Pantry, Nancy Janniff, thanked the parish for the recent “souperbowl” donations of 220.5 pounds of food together with $438. “You are all a blessing to us and the communities.”

Sacrament of Confirmation:
Bishop Salvatore Matano will confirm eight of our young parishioners along with many other confirmation candidates on Thursday, April 5, at St. Mary’s Church, Waterloo. Let us keep those preparing for the celebration of this sacrament in our thoughts and prayers throughout this month.

Lenten Days of Abstinence:wi1625bi_4c
Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence, i.e. meatless days. Abstinence prohibits individuals from eating meat on a particular day. Abstinence obliges all those who have reached the age of fourteen and continues to oblige throughout a person’s entire life. Those not specifically obliged to abstain from eating meat are encouraged
to join in this discipline to the extent that they are able.

Easter Duty:
“All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year. The precept must be fulfilled during the Easter season unless it is fulfilled for a just cause at some other time during the year.” (Church Law #920) In reference to this law the Easter season is considered from the First Sunday of Lent until Trinity Sunday (this year May 27).

Third Sunday of Lent ~ March 4, 2018

Year of the Eucharist June 18, 2017–June 3, 2018

B029Lent3_vib_qtr_EN_4c

First reading:
“I, the LORD, am your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery. You shall not have other gods beside me.” (Ex. 20:2-3)

Psalm:
The decree of the LORD is trustworthy, giving wisdom to the simple. (Ps. 89)

Second reading:
For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength. (1 Cor. 1:25)

Gospel:
And to those who sold doves he said, “Take these out of here, and stop making my Father’s house a marketplace.” His disciples recalled the words of Scripture, Zeal for your house will consume me. (Jn. 2:16-17)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
How seriously do we take the Ten Commandments? Many today adopt a free spirit approach to life and resist conforming their thoughts and actions to established guidelines and principles. We all need direction. Those who travel realize how much easier journeys can be when equipped with the proper directions. The Ten Commandments are God’s proper directions for us to assist us in living our lives as his children. We are given the example of Jesus, the living temple. Jesus allows us to share in his intimate relationship with his Father so that we can more quickly find our way to him. Guidelines and structure are important. Lent reminds us we are created in a certain way and are meant to live our lives in God.

It is in knowing and in loving the Jesus of the Eucharist that you will have the means to understand life, to find security, to be a people with roots. It is Christ who sustains and supports us in the many trials, struggles, challenges, transitions and happenings of our human existence. Second Sunday of Lent ~ February 25, 2018

Year of the Eucharist June 18, 2017–June 3, 2018

B026Lent2_nat_1_qtr_EN_4c

First Reading:
“I swear by myself, declares the LORD, that because you acted as you did in not withholding from me your beloved son, I will bless you abundantly.” (Gen. 9:16-17A)

Psalm:
To you will I offer sacrifice of thanksgiving, and I will call upon the name of the LORD (Ps. 116)

Second Reading:
If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but handed him over for us all, how will he not also give us everything else along with him? (Romans 8:31b-32)

Gospel:
Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them; from the cloud came a voice, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.” Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone but Jesus alone with them. (Mk. 9:7-8)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
The hope of being transformed or transfigured into the image of God awaits all of God’s children. We walk through this life knowing that our eternal destiny is to be like God and live eternally in his presence. How does this truth about who we can become change the way we live today? Does it even matter to us that we are called to a higher purpose that is often quite different than the one we fabricate for ourselves here on earth? A transformed, eternal life is God’s desire for all of his daughters and sons. Knowing this helps us put suffering in perspective and walk peacefully with hope in our hearts.

Year of the Eucharist
The following is taken from Bishop Salvatore R. Matano’s pastoral letter announcing a “Year of the Eucharist” in celebration of the 150 (sesquicentennial) anniversary of the diocese. “At this special moment in the life of our Diocese, daily let us call to mind the words of Saint John Paul II: ‘…never forget that Jesus in the tabernacle wants you at his side, so that he can fill your hearts with the experience of his friendship, which alone give meaning and fulfillment to your lives.’ (Mane Nobiscum Domine, no. 30).” The Bishop’s complete letter may be read on the diocese’s website.

Daily Meditations:
The Center for Action and Contemplation offers daily meditations that have proved most helpful to thousands of people. Please go to https://cac.org or .

Flu Season and the Sign of Peace:
The faithful should be aware that, using their best judgment, they may offer the sign of peace with a simple nod or bow of the head, and simply say: “Peace be with you,” and the response of the other being: “And with our spirit.”

Flu Season and Holy Communion:
Holy Communion may be given under the one species of the Sacred Host. “Christ is ‘truly, really and substantially contained’ (cf. “Council of Trent,” session xiii) in Holy Communion. His presence is not momentary nor simply signified, but wholly and permanently real under each of the consecrated species of bread and wine.” (“Norms for the Distribution and Reception of Holy Communion under Both Kinds in the United States of America,” No. 8). As relates to the distribution of Holy Communion under both species, the General Instruction of the Roman Missal states: “Above all, they (the pastors) should instruct the faithful that the Catholic Faith teaches that Christ, whole and entire, and the true Sacrament, is received even under only one species, and hence that as regards the resulting fruits, those who receive under only one species are not deprived of any grace that is necessary for salvation.” (General Instruction of the Roman Missal, No. 272). See the diocese web site, http://www.dor.org, for more information.

First Sunday of Lent ~ February 18, 2018

Year of the Eucharist June 18, 2017–June 3, 2018

B023Lent1_nat_1_qtr_EN_4c

First reading:
God said to Noah and to his sons with him: “See, I am now establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you.” (Gen. 9:8-15)

Psalm:
Your ways, O Lord, are love and truth to those who keep your covenant. (Ps. 25)

Second reading:
Christ suffered for sins once, the righteous for the sake of the unrighteous, that he might lead you to God. Put to death in the flesh, he was brought to life in the Spirit. (1 Pt. 3:18)

Gospel:
After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God: “This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” (Mk. 1:14-15)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Repent and believe in the gospel! This is the message that is found on Jesus’s lips after forty days in the desert. As the forty days of Lent come before us, we are asked to create a desert experience in our lives so that we can learn anew the ways of God. Our daily cares and concerns can distract us from truth and cause us to become absorbed with the world and secular priorities. Lent is an opportunity to free ourselves from illusion and focus us on what really matters. In doing so, we open up new possibilities for our relationship with God, others, our world, and ourselves.

“On February 20 of this year 2017, we commemorated the fiftieth anniversary of the deaths of Fr. George J. Weinmann and Sister Lilian Marie McLaughlin, S.S.N.D., who lost their lives as they sought to save the Blessed Sacrament from the fire that destroyed St. Philip Neri Church, Rochester, New York. Their belief in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, demonstrated by the gift of their own lives, continues to be a very powerful example of who we believe the Most Holy Eucharist to be. We are now called to renew our profession of faith in the Eucharistic Christ constantly dwelling in the tabernacles of our churches.” The Bishop’s complete letter may be read on the diocese’s website.

Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ February 11, 2018

Year of the Eucharist June 18, 2017–June 3, 2018

B077OT6_nat_1_qtr_EN_4c

First reading:
“If the man is leprous and unclean, the priest shall declare him unclean by reason of the sore on his head.” (Lv. 13:44)

Psalm:
I turn to you, Lord, in times of trouble, and you fill me with the joy of salvation (Ps. 32)

Second reading:
Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God. (1 Cor. 10:31)

Gospel:
A leper came to Jesus and kneeling down begged him and said, “If you wish, you can make me clean.” Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand, touched him, and said to him, “I do will it. Be made clean.” (Mk. 1:40-41)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
We never marginalize or turn our backs on those who suffer violence, oppression from unjust systems, poverty, illness, or disease. Jesus never turned anyone away, but always extended a hand of healing and compassion. He would insist on extending God’s merciful and unconditional love to all, even if it meant breaking the Sabbath or civil law. Does the way we treat others, especially those who are different than us, reflect the freedom, joy, love, and good news of the Gospel?

Lent in the Parish of Mary
Mother of Mercy

During the Season of Lent, the Church urges all the faithful to reflect a spirit of prayer, penance (conversion), and charity.

Lenten Reminders and Devotions:

  • The season of Lent runs from Ash Wednesday (February 14) until the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday (March 29).
  • “Alleluia” is not sung or said from the beginning of Lent until the Easter Vigil.
  • During Lent the altar is not to be decorated with flowers.
  • Musical instruments may be played only to give necessary support to the singing.
  • The readings for the Lenten Masses have been chosen in relation to the themes of baptismal renewal and conversion.

Lenten Days of Fast and Abstinence:

  • Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fast and abstinence.
  • Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence, i.e. meatless days.
  • Abstinence prohibits individuals from eating meat on a particular day. Abstinence obliges all those who have reached the age of 14 and continues to oblige throughout one’s entire life. Those not specifically obliged to abstain from eating meat are encouraged to join in this discipline to the extent that they are able.
  • Fasting: requires that only one full meal be taken per day. Two other smaller meals may be taken during the day to maintain physical strength, but these two meals together should not equal a full meal in quantity. Fasting obliges all those who have reached the age of 18 and continues to oblige until age 59. Those not specifically obliged to fast are encouraged to join in the discipline of fasting to the extent that they are able.

Sacrament of Reconciliation:
A diocesan day of penance and mercy is Wednesday, March 14, 12:300–7:30 P.M.

Throughout the diocese, priests will be available at the parish churches for Confession. A priest will be available at the Parish Center in St. Francis Solanus Church, Interlaken.

There will be a Communal Celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation
with Private Confession on March 26, Monday of Holy Week, at the Parish Center in St. Francis Solanus Church, Interlaken.

The sacrament of Reconciliation/Confessions are every Friday, 6:30–7:00 p.m., at St. Francis Solanus in Interlaken or by appointment with a priest.

Ash Wednesday ~ February 14, 2018:

Distribution of Ashes:

  • 9:00 a.m. Mass at St. James the Apostle
  • 12:15 p.m. Distribution of Ashes Service at Holy Cross
  • 7:00 p.m. Mass at St. Francis Solanus

Why Ashes? Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the season of Lent. On this day the Church invites us to receive a cross of ashes on our foreheads as a sign that during the Season of Lent we will make sincere efforts to cleanse our lives of sin and to discipline ourselves through prayer and fasting.

Who May Receive Ashes? Baptized individuals who have reached the age of reason. Babies and young children who have not yet received the Sacrament of Penance should not be presented to receive ashes. Ashes are intended for those who are capable of personal sin. The keeping of Ash Wednesday is for leading the baptized members of the Church to repentance and renewal of baptismal promises at Easter.

Ashes and the Word of God. As with all material things that are used as religious symbols, the symbolism of ashes is complex. In themselves ashes have little meaning. But received in light of God’s revealing Word, ashes can become for Christians the biblical symbol they are intended to be – a sign of our desire to turn back to God. It is for this reason that the Church has placed the reception of ashes within the framework of the reading of Scripture. Ashes are reminders of mortality and the fleetingness of life. Through the Scripture readings, God calls us to turn to Him with our whole heart and be faithful to the gospel again. In the light of these readings the reception of ashes becomes for us the symbol of hearts that desire to turn to God, a God who is “gracious and merciful, rich in kindness and relenting in punishment.”

Stations of the Cross:

  • Thursdays of Lent, 6:00 p.m. at Holy Cross Church followed by a communal “Soup Supper.”
  • Fridays of Lent, beginning March 2, at 7:00 P.M. in St. Francis Solanus Church with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament at the Parish Center.

Easter Triduum (Three Days of Easter):
March 29 and 30, April 1

Easter Duty: “All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year. The precept must be fulfilled during the Easter season unless it is fulfilled for a just cause at some other time during the year.” (Church Law #920) In reference to this law the Easter season is considered from the First Sunday of Lent until Trinity Sunday (this year May 27).

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ February 4, 2018

Year of the Eucharist June 18, 2017–June 3, 2018

B074OT5_nat_1_qtr_EN_4c

First reading:
If in bed I say, “When shall I arise?” then the night drags on; I am filled with restlessness until the dawn. (Job 7:4)

Psalm:
He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. (Ps. 147)

Second reading:
To the weak I became weak, to win over the weak. I have become all things to all, to save at least some. (1 Cor. 9:22)

Gospel:
When it was evening, after sunset, they brought to him all who were ill or possessed by demons. The whole town was gathered at the door. He cured many who were sick with various diseases, and he drove out many demons, not permitting them to speak because they knew him. (Mk. 1:32-34)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
When we suffer, we can easily find ourselves thinking that we have been abandoned by God or have done something to displease him and are now paying the price. Suffering is not God’s fault. The reality of suffering and death is much more complicated than this and even somewhat mysterious. When Jesus preached the Gospel, it was made clear that suffering has meaning and always brings with it new life. It requires faith in order to understand this mystery. The Gospel brings us new life both here and in the life to come. This is truly Good News! When this Good News is understood by the believer it stirs within us a passion to urgently preach this healing and life giving message to others.

Food items may be brought to the churches the this weekend, February 3 and 4. On February 4, at St. James the Apostle church, the second year Confirmation students will assist in taking up a collection for monetary donations after Mass as part of their community service. Please consider being as generous as you possibly can—all items and monies collected will be going to our local food pantries to help those who have the need!

2017–2018 Catholic Ministries Appeal:
An update of January 5 shows that, of our parish goal of $30,549, one hundred and twenty-four households have pledged $28,196, which represents 92.30 % of our goal. “Thank you” to all who have made a pledge to the appeal. Pledge envelopes have been mailed and there are envelopes in the foyers of the churches. If we are to reach our given goal—“Participation is primary, what is pledged is secondary.”

Sixth Month Financial Report:
The Parish Finance Council met on January 18 for its quarterly meeting. Our church fiscal year is from July 1 through June 30. The December report reflects six months into our fiscal year. The year to date revenues amounted to $122,532.82 with year to date expenses amounted to $119,165.51. The net is $3,367.31. Thank you for keeping us solvent for the first six months. It is greatly appreciated. Please continue.

Ushers and Collection Counters:
In order to follow diocesan policies and procedures, those involved in the ministry of ushering and collection counting need to annually sign (every January) an acknowledgement form stating they have received a copy of the “Handling and Collection Counting Procedures.” Each usher and collection counter is asked to please pick up your envelope in the church and return the completed acknowledgement form to the church office as soon as possible.

Buildings and Grounds:
In our parish each church has a Buildings and Grounds Committee. The three committees met at their locations on January 10 to discuss the needs of their particular churches. Among some of the items brought forth: Holy Cross is in need of painting the trim on the rectory and church, some interior house repair, and major work on the back side of the garage. St. James the Apostle is in need of parking lot and sidewalk repair with possible additional parking, front porch replacement on the rectory, and garage wall repair. St. Francis Solanus needs a reconstruction of the sacristy and replacement of the sanctuary doors. These are projects beyond ordinary maintenance and repair work. All three churches are also in need of a change to the outdoor signs stating the times of the Masses at that particular location.

Ash Wednesday:021418_cf13_4c
Valentine’s Day, February 14, is also Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent. The Worship Committee met on January 16 and, among other items, set the Ash Wednesday liturgical services times and places. Please note and plan to be present at one of the following: there will be a 9:00 a. m. Mass at St. James the Apostle (therefore no 9:00 a.m. Mass at St. Francis Solanus); there will be a Distribution of Ashes Service at 12:15 p.m. at Holy Cross, and there will be a 7:00 p.m. Mass at St. Francis Solanus.

Rice Bowl:
Every year the Catholic Relief Services sponsors a Rice Bowl project encouraging our faith community—and nearly 14,000 Catholic communities across the United States—in a life-changing Lenten journey of encounter with CRS Rice Bowl. Pick up your family’s CRS Rice Bowl at church on the weekend of February 11. During the forty days of Lent, as companions on the journey, we will encounter our neighbor.

Thank you:
The Interlaken Reformed Church expressed its appreciation to the parish for our participation in the 2017 “Operation Rice Bowl.” This participation helped with local hunger relief efforts. “We are seeing new families and are often feeding close to 100 families a week.”

Diocese of Rochester Public Policy Committee:
In today’s first reading from the Book of Job, Job begins to lose hope when trials set in. In the second reading, Paul presses on as does Jesus who cures the ill and those possessed by demons although the day has passed and it is already sunset. We cannot allow young people who have applied themselves, worked diligently, and desire to contribute to our U.S. society and economy to be brutally turned away and sent back to their countries of origin where they may not know either the culture or the language. It is currently estimated that approximately 800,000 young people qualify as Dreamers and that about 91% are employed. If they are deported over 700,000 jobs would be lost to the economy. Those who work pay taxes and contribute to the economic growth of our nation. Next weekend is the Diocese of Rochester’s Public Policy Weekend. You will have the opportunity at church to lend your support urging our government officials to work with all deliberate speed to find a bipartisan solution for Dreamers that includes a path to citizenship.

Year of the Eucharist:YearofEucharist_150_LOGO (1)
The following is taken from Bishop Salvatore R. Matano’s pastoral letter announcing a “Year of the Eucharist” in celebration of the 150 (sesquicentennial) anniversary of the diocese. “The more the Most Holy Eucharist clearly becomes the source and focus of our diocesan life, the greater the possibility for increasing vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and religious life, which, in turn, reaches out in service to the laity and assures the continued firm foundation of our Diocese into the future through the proclamation of Jesus Christ in Word and Sacrament.” The bishop’s complete letter may be read on the diocese’s website.

Daily Meditations:
The Center for Action and Contemplation offers daily meditations that have proved most helpful to thousands of people. Please go to https://cac.org or email .

Flu Season:
The faithful should be aware that, using their best judgment, they may offer the sign of peace with a simple nod or bow of the head, and simply say: “Peace be with you.” The response is “And with our spirit.” To read more about the diocese’s recommendations during this flu season see the diocese’s web site.

Food Donations at St. James:
Next Sunday, and every second Sunday of the month, please bring non-perishable food items to church and place them on the table in the front beneath the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary at the front of the church. Monetary gifts are also welcome.

Ithaca MobilePack:
“Beyond the Plate,” is an evening of local cuisine in support of the Ithaca MobilePack for Feed My Starving Children (www.ithacamobilepack.org). “Beyond the Plate” will be held at St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Ithaca on Sunday, February 11, 5:00–9:00 p.m. (first course served at 5:30 p.m.). Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ January 28, 2018

Year of the Eucharist June 18, 2017 – June 3, 2018

B071OT4_nat_1_qtr_EN_4c

First Reading:
“I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their kin, and will put my words into his mouth; he shall tell them all that I command him.” (Dt. 18: 18)

Psalm:
If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts. (Ps. 95)

Second Reading:
I am telling you this for your own benefit, not to impose a restraint upon you, but for the sake of propriety and adherence to the Lord without distraction. (1 Cor. 7:35)

Gospel:
All were amazed and asked one another, “What is this? A new teaching with authority. He commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him.” His fame spread everywhere throughout the whole region of Galilee. (Mk. 1:27-28)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Jesus had a way of amazing the crowds. There was something very different about not only what he taught but how he taught it. He brought an authority to what he said that gave it a credibility that was not experienced elsewhere. His words were not only prophetic but rang true to the experience of the people, especially those who were poor, marginalized, victimized, lost, or forgotten. Do Jesus’s words ring true to you? The Gospel message transcends time and space and has a profound relevancy in every generation. Jesus is still trying to point us toward our truth and have us see and accept who we are in God. Are you ready to hear this? We are asked to bring credibility to this same Gospel message by how we live our lives.

Diocese of Rochester Public Policy Committee:
The 2018 Public Policy Advocacy Weekend is February 10 and 11 and this year’s issue is the passage by Congress of “The Dream Act.” Jesus’s word in the Gospel of Mark has the power to heal as Jesus speaks in the synagogue and casts out an unclean spirit. Those who are present react with amazement. Later this becomes a cause of division among the people. As a nation, we suffer many divisions including opinions about whom we will accept as legal residents of our country. The Dream Act has strong bi-partisan support because those who are eligible have already fulfilled certain conditions. They have been educated in our schools and earned a college degree or equivalent in a two-year training program or have served honorably in our military. Persons who qualify went through a step-by-step process including eight years of conditional residence to apply for legal permanent residence. Applying for citizenship status may require up to another five years of residence.

“In his writings, St. John Paul II encourages Eucharistic Devotion outside of Mass and instructs us: ‘Let us take time to kneel before Jesus present in the Eucharist…’ (Mane Nobiscum Domine, no. 18). This includes making visits to church whenever possible, Eucharistic adoration, and the celebration of Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Programs are good and necessary, but there is no substitute for our active worship of Christ present in the Most Holy Eucharist. Priests, deacons, parish administrators, and the leadership and faculties in our Catholic schools and religious education programs should foster Eucharistic devotions which become a source of renewed strength in the life of the parish, school and educational programs.” The bishop’s complete letter may be read on the diocese’s website.

Trumansburg Community Chorus:
Do you like to sing? Come join the Trumansburg Community Chorus! Rehearsals for the spring session will begin on Monday, January 29, and run each Monday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Jacksonville United Methodist Church, 1869 Trumansburg Road. Alice Ploss, director, has wide experience leading choral musicians of all ages. New members who like to sing are welcome, regardless of formal experience. The fee is $40 for adults and $25 for students. An optional extra $20 would help to purchase music. More information can be found at tburgchorus.com.

Local expert chefs are donating their time and artistry, each preparing a course tailored to the evening, with wine pairings as well. Tickets are $100 per person and go on sale Tuesday, January 16. Go to St. Catherine’s website for more information and to order tickets: www.stcathofsiena.org (under “News and Events”), or call 516-319-6752. Third Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ January 21, 2018

June 18, 2017–June 3, 2018 Year of the Eucharist

B068OT3_nat_1_qtr_EN_4c

First Reading:
When God saw by their actions how they turned from their evil way, he repented of the evil that he had threatened to do to them; he did not carry it out. (Jonah 3:10)

Psalm:
Teach me your ways, O Lord. (Ps. 25)

Second Reading:
I tell you, brothers and sisters, the time is running out. From now on, let those having wives act as not having them, those weeping as not weeping, those rejoicing as not rejoicing, those buying as not owning. (1 Cor. 7:29-30)

Gospel:
As he passed by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting their nets into the sea; they were fishermen. Jesus said to them, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” (Mk. 1:16-17)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Jesus proclaims today the Gospel of God: “This is the time of fulfillment. The Kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the Gospel.” Jesus challenges us to accept a change of heart, to start believing and thinking differently. The Gospel asks us to take the focus off ourselves and away from self-concern, and place it on our brothers and sisters, especially those most broken and in need, and on our environment. We are called to be stewards of all God has created. This means that we are also called to work on God’s behalf ensuring that all that God created and all who God created is cared for and protected.

Let the words of Saint Teresa of Calcutta give you God’s strength, hope, and peace. The discussion will be after the 9:00 a.m. Mass on Tuesdays at St. James the Apostle. Books will be provided. If you need additional information, call Camille Taranto, 387-3125.

SouperBowl of Caring 2018:
February 4 is Super Bowl Sunday and across this nation it is also the date for the “SouperBowl of Caring.” The parish of Mary, Mother of Mercy, will be participating in this event by collecting donations of non-perishable food items and cash that would go directly to the local food pantries. Food items may be brought to the churches the weekend of January 27 and 28 and the weekend of February 3 and 4. On February 4, at St. James the Apostle church, the second year Confirmation students will assist in taking up a collection for monetary donations after Mass as part of their community service. Please consider being as generous as you possibly can—all items and monies collected will be going to our local food pantries to help those who have the need!

2018 Offertory Envelopes:
Parishioners using the boxes of offertory envelopes may pick up their box at the following locations: at St. James the Apostle in the Pine Room, at St. Francis Solanus in the annex, and at Holy Cross in the church vestibule/foyer. The boxes at each location are labeled with your name and address. If you would like a box of offertory envelopes please contact the parish office.

2017-2018 Catholic Ministries Appeal:
An update of January 5 shows that, of our parish goal of $30,549, one hundred and twenty-three households have pledged $28,096, which represents 91.97% of the goal. “Thank you” to all who have made a pledge to the appeal. Pledge envelopes have been mailed and there are envelopes in the foyers of the churches. If we are to reach our given goal—“Participation is primary, what is pledged is secondary.”

“During this ‘Year of the Eucharist,’ in support of our parents and all entrusted to our pastoral care, I ask that throughout our deaneries and in our schools, institutions, agencies and pastoral programs, the centrality of the Most Holy Eucharist is reflected in our words and actions, in our catechesis and in our religious education programs. It is my hope that there will be greater availability of educational and devotional opportunities for both children and adults to deepen their knowledge about the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist.” The Bishop’s complete letter may be read on the diocese’s website.

Thank You:
• The Trumansburg Food Pantry thanks the Parish of Mary, Mother of Mercy, for donations to the pantry. “We are grateful for the support from such a caring community.”

• The South Seneca Ecumenical Food Pantry sent a thank you to the parish for … “your support…. You are a blessing to us, and our community.”

Justice for Immigrants, Stand with Pope Francis:
In today’s first reading from the Book of Jonah the people of Nineveh get a second chance to turn from their sinful ways and, when they do so, God relents. Pope Francis continually reminds us of the compassion of God who gives us a second chance and he recently launched a campaign called “Share the Journey,” calling on Catholics to learn about and stand on the side of refugees and migrants. The 2018 Public Policy Advocacy Weekend is February 10 and 11 and this year’s issue is the passage by Congress of “The Dream Act.” Here in the Diocese of Rochester Bishop Matano and the Diocesan Public Policy Committee are asking parishes to specifically stand with the Dreamers, the young people who were brought to the United States as children by their parents. The Dream Act offers a “second chance” by providing them an opportunity for legal permanent residence with a pathway to citizenship for those who can fulfill specific conditions. We’ll be signing petitions on this issue soon, but you can get a jump start by calling Rep. Tom Reed’s office at 202-225-3161 to ask him to support this bill.

Ithaca MobilePack:
Come to the second annual “Beyond the Plate,” an evening of local cuisine in support of the Ithaca MobilePack for Feed My Starving Children (www.ithacamobilepack.org). “Beyond the Plate” will be held at St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Ithaca on Sunday, February 11, 5:00–9:00 p.m. (first course served at 5:30 p.m.). All proceeds from the dinner will go to the Ithaca MobilePack, which brings together over 1,400 local volunteers from the Ithaca community to pack over 300,000 meals for Feed My Starving Children, a national Christian organization that delivers these meals to hungry children around the world. Thank you for your support!

Second Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ January 14, 2018

Year of the Eucharist June 18, 2017–June 3, 2018

B065OT2_nat_1_qtr_EN_4c

First Reading:
The LORD called Samuel again, for the third time. Getting up and going to Eli, he said, “Here I am. You called me.” Then Eli understood that the LORD was calling the youth. (1 Sm. 3:8)

Psalm:
Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will. (Ps. 40)

Second Reading:
Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been purchased at a price. Therefore glorify God in your body. (1 Cor. 6:19-20)

Gospel:
John was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he said, “Behold, the Lamb of God.” The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus. (Jn. 1:35-37)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Sometimes it is difficult to hear God’s call. We are trained to listen attentively and to hear many things, but spiritual ones are often missed. God is calling us all of the time. He is calling us to drink deeply of the well of life and not get distracted by the superficial and short-lasting things we choose to cling to. Have we ever given a true spiritual life and relationship with God a chance? Jesus says to us today, “Come, and you will see.” May we take Jesus up on his invitation and like Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, be able to exclaim: “We have found the Messiah.”

“Recalling that at the Baptism of their children parents are called to be the first and the best of teachers of their children in the ways of the Catholic faith, this “Year of the Eucharist” is intended to encourage and to support parents in fulfilling the special responsibilities entrusted to them. By their good example, parents are the ones who first bring their children to the House of the Lord. In introducing our children to this beautiful encounter with the Lord, we introduce them to the very essence of human life, namely every person’s natural instinct to commune with the Divine. Our children must understand that ‘we worship whom we know,’ Jesus the Christ, and that we indeed do worship ‘in Spirit and in Truth.’ (Cf. John 4:22-23). A child is never too young to be brought to church and never too young to be taught to love Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament.” The Bishop’s complete letter may be read on the diocese’s website.

The Epiphany of the Lord ~ January 7, 2018

Year of the Eucharist June 18, 2017–June 3, 2018

B020Epiph_nat_1_qtr_EN_4c

First Reading:
Nations shall walk by your light, and kings by your shining radiance. (Is. 60:3)

Psalm:
Lord, every nation on earth will adore you. (Ps. 72)

Second Reading:
Brothers and sisters: You have heard of the stewardship of God’s grace that was given to me for your benefit, namely, that the mystery was made known to me by revelation. (Eph. 3:2-3a)

Gospel:
They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. (Mt. 2:10-11)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Jesus came for everyone. No one has an exclusive claim on Christ and his birth not only transcends time and space but earthly boundaries as well. Every human being is a child of God. Jews and Gentiles alike are all coheirs, partners and members of the same body. This insight or epiphany is what we celebrate today. It also expresses our hope that one day every nation on earth will recognize and adore Jesus Christ. Jesus’ message of peace, justice, reconciliation and love are meant for everyone to hear and understand.

National Migration Week:
For nearly a half century, the Catholic Church in the United States has celebrated National Migration Week, an opportunity for the Church to reflect on the circumstances confronting immigrants, refugees, children, and human trafficking survivors. This year the week will be January 7–14, 2018, and the theme is “Many Journeys, One Family,” which draws attention to the fact that all of our families have a migration story: some recent and others in the distant past. Regardless of where we are and where we came from, we remain part of the human family and are called to live in solidarity with one another. Join the U.S. Catholic bishops in support of protecting immigrants and refugees by sending an electronic postcard to Washington, D.C., asking that lawmakers ensure humane treatment and reforms towards migrants and refugees. The postcards may be sent from Justice for Immigrants’ (JFI) homepage at www.justiceforimmigrants.org. More information about the Catholic bishops’ JFI campaign may also be found at www.sharejourney.org.

Christmas Season and Ordinary Time:
The Christmas season begins on Christmas day and concludes with the celebration of the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, this year on January 8. As part of the liturgical year, ordinary time this year will begin on Tuesday, January 9, and will continue through Tuesday, February 13, the day before Ash Wednesday which begins the Lenten season. Ordinary time will resume again when the Easter season ends, that is, on Monday, May 21, the day following Pentecost.

Home Blessing Kit:
For many Catholics, Epiphany is traditionally a time to bless the home. At each of the Masses on Epiphany there will be “blessing kits” available to take home. Families who so desire may take a kit and use the materials to bless their homes for the coming year. Instructions, prayers and blessed chalk will be in the kits to assist you.

2018 Calendar:
2018 calendars for the Parish of Mary, Mother of Mercy, are available in the foyers of each church. Please be aware that the notation at the bottom of the calendar stating the times of the parish weekend Masses is not up to date. The calendars were printed before the changes were announced.

Sacrament of Reconciliation:
The opportunity to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation (confession) will continue on Friday evenings at 6:30 p.m. at St. Francis Solanus church in Interlaken. At this time, due to the weekend Mass schedule change, the sacrament will not be celebrated on Saturdays at St. James the Apostle Church in Trumansburg.

Maintenance Fund Envelopes:
In regard to the 2018 boxes of offertory envelopes, this year there is no date on the envelope marked “Maintenance Fund.” Last year one church had dates on the maintenance envelope and we tried to adhere to that date for the other two churches. The maintenance envelope is placed at the beginning of each month in the box of envelopes. This year when making a contribution to the fund, please deposit the envelope in the regular weekly Sunday collection on the Sunday of the month convenient for you. Your help with the cost of the maintenance of our buildings and grounds is always greatly appreciated.

“…the November 14, 2006, document of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops entitled: Happy Are Those Who are Called to His Supper: On Preparing to Receive Christ Worthily in the Eucharist. Here we read: ‘Manifesting the Father’s mercy, Jesus instituted the Sacrament of Penance to allow us to confess our sins in repentance, receive absolution from the priest, and so receive again the grace of the Holy Spirit, who once more makes us living members of Christ’s body, the Church.’ (p. 8). Further on, the instruction states: ‘Sin undermines and weakens our communion not only with the Blessed Trinity but also with one another. Therefore, in order to overcome the cause of sin, we are called to daily repentance and to regular participation in the Sacrament of Penance’ (p. 13).”
