Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Families face many challenges. All of the demands of work, school, and society can easily put a strain on even the best intentioned of families. Hurt, anger, and bitterness can grow in our families especially when conflicts are not properly resolved or relationships nurtured. Human beings require time, patience, love, and nurturing. We need to take time to celebrate the gift of family and not allow other demands to rob us of the time we need to spend together. Life is short. The Holy Family stands before us today showing us that love, commitment, and perseverance can see us through any difficulty or challenge life can bring. May we learn from their example!

Year of the Eucharist:YearofEucharist_150_LOGO (1)
The following is taken from Bishop Salvatore R. Matano’s pastoral letter announcing a “Year of the Eucharist” in celebration of the 150 (sesquicentennial) anniversary of the diocese. “Belief in the Eucharistic presence of Christ also means that we approach the Holy Eucharist properly disposed, that is, not conscious of serious sin that requires that we avail ourselves of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, Confession, before the reception of Holy Communion. An examination of conscience before the worthy reception of the Body and Blood of Christ in the Eucharist is a serious obligation for all Catholics. (Cf. Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 1454).” The Bishop’s letter in its entirety may be found on the diocese website.

Pope Condemns Death Penalty:
On October 11, 2017, the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, before an international gathering of church leaders and ambassadors from many nations the pope declared that the death penalty is “contrary to the Gospel.” The Holy Father said that, “No man ever, not even the murderer, loses his personal dignity, because God is a Father who awaits the return of the son who, knowing that he has done wrong, asks pardon and begins a new life.” For this reason he declared, “life cannot be taken away from anyone.” The full address can be read here.

World Day of Peace, January 1:
Pope Francis’s message for this day carries the theme of migrants and refugees: men and women in search of peace. He writes: “Peace to all people and to all nations on earth! Peace, which the angels proclaimed to the shepherds on Christmas night, is a profound aspiration for everyone, for each individual and all peoples, and especially for those who most keenly suffer its absence. Among these whom I constantly keep in my thoughts and prayers, I would once again mention the over 250 million migrants worldwide, of who 22.5 million are refugees. Pope Benedict XVI, my beloved predecessor, spoke to them as ‘men and women, children, young and elderly people, who are searching for somewhere to live in peace.’ In order to find that peace, they are willing to risk their lives on a journey that is often long and perilous, to endure hardships and suffering, and to encounter fences and walls build to keep them far from their goal. In a spirit of compassion, let us embrace all those fleeing from war and hunger, or forced by discrimination, persecution, poverty and environmental degradation to leave their homelands.” The fifty-first World Day of Peace is January 1, 2018.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Mary said: “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” A simple trust in God’s word allowed the Mother of God to do incredible things. As a humble servant and listener, she embraced her mission and invested herself wholeheartedly in doing what God had asked. Do we know and trust that we are being led? Often, we can feel very much alone and without a source of inspiration, guidance, and love to enlighten our path. God is with us. This is the essential message of Advent and the truth revealed to us at Christmas. We are never alone. There is no need to fear. We too, with God’s help, can do incredible things.

Year of the Eucharist:
The following is taken from Bishop Salvatore R. Matano’s pastoral letter announcing a “Year of the Eucharist” in celebration of the 150 (sesquicentennial) anniversary of the diocese. “While noting real demographic changes in our landscape, it still is quite discouraging to see in populated places half-empty churches that once were filled. These occurrences should upset us all and cause us to renew our parishes through genuine and profound attachments to the Holy Eucharist demonstrated by weekly attendance at Holy Mass. In his Apostolic Letter, Dies Domini (The Lord’s Day) of May 31, 1998, St. John Paul II teaches: ‘Since the Eucharist is the very heart of Sunday, it is clear why, from the earliest centuries, the Pastors of the Church have not ceased to remind the faithful of the need to take part in the liturgical assembly.’ ‘Leave everything on the Lord’s Day’ urges the third century text known as the Didascalia, ‘and run diligently to your assembly, because it is your praise of God. Otherwise, what excuse will they make to God, those who do not come together on the Lord’s Day to hear the word of life and feed on the divine nourishment which last forever?’ (Dies Domini, no 46).” The Bishop’s letter in its entirety may be found on the diocese website.

Third Sunday of Advent ~ December 17, 2017

Year of the Eucharist June 18, 2017 ~ June 3, 2018

3rd Sunday Adventnat_1_qtr_EN_4c

First Reading:
I rejoice heartily in the LORD, in my God is the joy of my soul; for he has clothed me with a robe of salvation and wrapped me in a mantle of justice, like a bridegroom adorned with a diadem, like a bride bedecked with her jewels. (Is. 61:10)

Psalm:
My soul rejoices in my God. (Lk. 1)

Second Reading:
Brothers and sisters: Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing. In all circumstances give thanks, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus. (1 Thes. 5:16–18)

Gospel:
John answered them, “I baptize with water; but there is one among you whom you do not recognize, the one who is coming after me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to untie.” (Jn. 1:26–27)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
John the Baptist came to testify to the light, who is Jesus Christ. Like John, we are called to testify to that same Light. We do so by living lives of faith and bringing the joy of the Gospel to everyone we meet. We are people of joy who rejoice at his birth and eagerly await his coming again. We share that joy by tending to the needs of the poor, helping those who are broken, and witnessing to the freedom that a life in God brings. May we take our task of being joyful witnesses to the good news seriously as the celebration of Christ’s birth fast approaches.

“Our churches are not museums or mere testimonies to the past, nor are they multipurpose facilities for a wide spectrum of activities. They are the Houses of the Lord where the Holy Mass is offered, the Sacraments are celebrated and where Christ dwells in the tabernacles. If they are to remain open and vibrant, the love of Christ present in the Eucharist must be manifested by those believers who fill the pews of these churches and with their prayers lifted up to the Lord become a true sign of hope, a sign of the active presence of Christ among His people.” The Bishop’s letter in its entirety may be found on the diocese website.

Pope Condemns the Possession of Nuclear Weapons:
On November 10, Pope Francis not only denounced the use of nuclear weapons—as his recent papal predecessors have done, but declared for the first time ever that even the possession of nuclear weapons is to be condemned. Speaking before a high-profile Vatican sponsored international symposium, attended by 11 Nobel Peace Laureates titled “Prospects for a World Free of Nuclear Weapons and for Integral Disarmament,” the pope said we can not fail to be genuinely concerned by the catastrophic humanitarian and environmental effects of any employment of nuclear devices. “If we also take into account the risk of an accidental detonation as a result of error of any kind, the threat of their use, as well as their very possession, is to be firmly condemned. Weapons of mass destruction, particularly nuclear weapons, create nothing but a false sense of security. They cannot constitute the basis for peaceful coexistence between members of the human family, which must rather be inspired by an ethics of solidarity.” (For full address see https://zenit.org/articles/pope-stresses-need-to-halt-nuclear-arms/).

Becket Dinner:

Men: do you feel God may be calling you to priesthood? You are cordially invited to a Mass and attendance at the Becket dinner on Thursday, December 28, at the Blessed Sacrament Rectory, 259 Rutgers Street, Rochester. Confer with Fr. Bernard to be registered by December 20. If you have questions you may contact Fr. Jones or Fr. Van Lieshout at 585 271 7940 or visit rocpriest.org.

Thank You:
At the end of November the Trumansburg Food Pantry sent a note to the parish: “We are grateful for the support from such a caring community. Your kindness enables us to purchase food or personal care items for the families who benefit from the bi-monthly distributions.”

Second Sunday of Advent ~ December 10, 2017

Year of the Eucharist June 18, 2017 – June 3, 2018

2nd Sunday Advent nat_1_qtr_EN_4c

First reading:
A voice cries out: In the desert prepare the way of the LORD! Make straight in the wasteland a highway for our God! (Is. 40:3)

Psalm:
Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation. (Ps. 85)

Second Reading:
The Lord does not delay his promise, as some regard “delay,” but he is patient with you, not wishing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. (2 Pt. 3:9)

Gospel:
John the Baptist appeared in the desert proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins… John was clothed in camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist. He fed on locusts and wild honey. And this is what he proclaimed: “One mightier than I is coming after me.” (Mk. 1:4, 6-7a)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
John the Baptist announced, “Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.” Does preparing a way for the Lord have priority in our lives? Often we spend more time preparing paths for ourselves rather than a path for God. Advent calls us to take the focus off ourselves and put it on God. We prepare a path for God by practicing and living the virtues, being holy and devoted, patient and repentant, and attentive and humble. We are asked to bring comfort and healing to people and to show others by the way we live our lives that we have a higher calling and purpose.

Catholic Quotes—Words to Inspire the Faithful:

Year of the Eucharist:YearofEucharist_150_LOGO (1)
The following is taken from Bishop Salvatore R. Matano’s pastoral letter announcing a “Year of the Eucharist” in celebration of the 150 (sesquicentennial) anniversary of the diocese. “All that we do as Catholics stems from our attachment to, and is directed back toward, the Eucharist. That one so easily misses Holy Mass reflects a lack of understanding of the Eucharistic sacrifice established by Christ Himself by His death upon the Cross. However, we cannot be critical of those who have not been taught or instructed about the Eucharist, or have not been given the best possible example of fidelity to the Eucharist. This is a moment for all of us to examine our consciences as to how we have or have not fostered devotion to the Eucharist according to our particular vocations in life.” The Bishop’s letter in its entirety may be found on the diocese website.

Thank You:
The parish received a letter of gratitude from Rev. Robert C. Bradler, diocesan director of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith for the World Mission Sunday collection that amounted to $1,085.

First Sunday of Advent ~ December 3, 2017

Year of the Eucharist June 18, 2017 – June 3, 2018

1st Sunday Advent-nat_1_qtr_EN_4c

First Reading:
Yet, O LORD, you are our father; we are the clay and you the potter: we are all the work of your hands. (Is. 64:7)

Psalm:
Lord, make us turn to you; let us see your face and we shall be saved. (Ps. 80)

Second Reading:
He will keep you firm to the end, irreproachable on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, and by him you were called to fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. (1 Cor. 3:8-9)

Gospel:
“Watch, therefore; you do not know when the Lord of the house is coming, whether in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or in the morning. May he not come suddenly and find you sleeping.” (Mk. 13:35-36)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
On this First Sunday of Advent, we are asked to be watchful and alert. Because of our baptism we are called to be gatekeepers of God’s house and God’s servants. We have been put in charge of caring for what God has made–the earth around us and our brothers and sisters. Being responsible means being attentive to what is within our care. Are we responsible and attentive stewards or does our attention and focus often wander to things that are not important to the kingdom of God?

Year of the Eucharist:YearofEucharist_150_LOGO (1)
The following is taken from Bishop Salvatore R. Matano’s pastoral letter announcing a “Year of the Eucharist” in celebration of the 150 (sesquicentennial) anniversary of the diocese. “The Catechism of the Catholic Church clearly instructs us: ‘The Sunday Eucharist is the foundation and confirmation of all Christian practice. For this reason the faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on days of obligation, unless excused for a serious reasons (for example, illness, the care of infants) or dispensed by their own pastor (Cf. Code of Canon Law, canon 1245). Those who deliberately fail this obligation commit a grave sin.’ (Catechism of the Catholic Church, n. 2181).” The Bishop’s letter in its entirety may be found on the diocese website.

Our Lord, Jesus Christ, King of the Universe ~ November 26, 2017

Year of the Eucharist June 18, 201– June 3, 2018

A160ChKing_nat_1_qtr_EN_4c

First Reading:
As a shepherd tends his flock when he finds himself among his scattered sheep, so will I tend my sheep. I will rescue them from every place where they were scattered when it was cloudy and dark. (Ez. 34:12)

Psalm:
The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want. (Ps. 23)

Second Reading:
For since death came through man, the resurrection of the dead came also through man. For just as in Adam all die, so too in Christ shall all be brought to life. (1 Cor. 15:21-22)

Gospel:
“Then the king will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me’.” (Mt. 25:34-36)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
As the King of the universe, Christ does not desire earthly power or kingly admiration. What Christ our King desires is that we advocate and work for those most in need among us: the poor, the unfortunate, the forsaken, the abused, and the exploited. Providing for the basic needs of others is a human right that we must strive to fulfill. If someone is hungry, feed her. If someone is without shelter, provide one. If a person requires clothes, clothe him. When others are in harm’s way, find them safety. When it comes to basic human needs, it does not matter WHY a person is in need; all that matters is that someone IS. That’s where you and I, who are citizens of God’s eternal kingdom, come in. What we do for the least of these, we do for God.

Catholic Quotes—Words to Inspire the Faithful:
“In all your actions seek in the first place the Kingdom of God and his glory.” ~St. Bernardine of Siena

Next Sunday, December 3, will be Fr. Brendan’s last Sunday as our parochial vicar. There will be a social sponsored by the Woman’s Guild after the 11:00 a.m. Mass in the St. James church hall. All are welcome. The Capuchin Franciscan Province of St. Mary, because of illnesses, has unexpectedly become immediately in need of two Spanish speaking pastors, one in Manchester, N.H., and the other in Brooklyn, NY. The Provincial Minister has assigned Fr. Brendan to St. Michael’s Church in Brooklyn, to be the pastor beginning December 4. It is with sadness that Fr. Brendan will be leaving the parochial, prison, and Hispanic ministry in our area where he has been so effective and appreciated. We praise God for his presence among us and pray for him as begins his new ministry. “Thank you, Fr. Brendan.”

Parish Mass Schedules:
With the transfer of Fr. Brendan and no replacement, the Mass schedule has to be changed to accommodate one priest. At this time (11/15/17) what is hoped for is one Parish Mass on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Where those Masses will be celebrated is yet to be determined. For the weekend Masses the hope is to have a Saturday Vigil Mass and two Masses on Sunday—a total of three Masses for the Parish on the weekend. The Parish Council will be working with Fr. Bernard to create a new Mass schedule. The daily Mass schedule has to be determined and executed by December 4. The weekend Mass schedule would hopefully begin the weekend of December 24.

Hat, Scarf, and Mitten Tree:
The annual hat, scarf, and mitten tree sponsored by the Women Guild has been set up at St. James church. They are looking for donations of new items, for all ages. Items will be taken to Catholic Charities of Tompkins/Tioga Counties before Christmas. Please consider making a donation.

Matano’s pastoral letter announcing a “Year of the Eucharist” in celebration of the 150 (sesquicentennial) anniversary of the diocese. “The rich inheritance of faith and Eucharistic identification with Christ places upon us certain demands and responsibilities. … First and foremost, it means faithfully attending Holy Mass every weekend: Jesus personally desires and askes for our presence not just twice, three times a month, or on special occasions, but every weekend; not only when religious education classes are conducted during the academic year, but throughout the entire year.” The Bishop’s letter in its entirety may be found on the diocese website.

2017-2018 Catholic Ministries Appeal:
An update of November 10 was issued: our parish goal for the appeal is $30,549. Seventy-eight households have pledged $12,885 which represents 42.17% of our goal. Pledge envelopes have been mailed and there are envelopes in the foyers of the churches. “Participation is primary, what is pledged is secondary”

Share the Warmth:
St. James parishioners can help others cope with the oncoming cold weather by contributing new or gently used winter clothing and blankets to the twenty-fifth annual “Share the Warmth” campaign. Donations of jackets, boots, coats, and winter accessories such as hats, scarves, gloves, and mittens are distributed by Catholic Charities of Tompkins/Tioga through the Samaritan Center free of charge to individuals who are in need of such items. The collection bin is located on the rectory porch of St. James the Apostle until the end of November. Distribution is scheduled for December 4–15, Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Parishioners willing to volunteer for a two-hour shift during this two week event can phone Catholic Charities at 607-272-5062 to be scheduled.

Witnessing to the Sanctity of Human Life:
Jerome Lejeune M.D. committed himself to the pro-life cause when he discovered that children with Down syndrome were being aborted in ever-greater numbers. In 1991, he wrote a summary of his reflections on medical ethics: “1) Christians, be not afraid. It is you who possess the truth. Not that you invented it but because you are the vehicle for it. To all doctors, you must repeat: ‘You must conquer the illness, not attack the patient.’ 2) We are made in the image of God. For this reason alone all human beings must be respected. 3) Abortion and infanticide are unspeakable crimes. 4) Objective morality exists. It is clear and it is universal. 5) In so-called pluralistic societies, they shout it down our throats: ‘You Christians do not have the right to impose your morality on others.’ Well, I tell you, not only do you have the right to try to incorporate your morality in the law but it is your democratic duty.”

Program for Single, Pregnant Women:
You are invited to an open house at the Margaret Home, 207 W. Filbert Street, East Rochester, on Sunday, December 3, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. The Margaret Home is a long-term residential program for single, pregnant women which will provide safe and secure housing and connect women with needed resources and programs to develop the necessary skills for stable, independent living. For all of you are children of the light and children of the day. We are not of the night or of darkness. Therefore, let us not sleep as the rest do, but let us stay alert and sober. (1 Thes. 5:5-6)

Gospel:
“‘Master, you gave me five talents. See, I have made five more.’ His master said to him, ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. Come, share your master’s joy’.” (Mt. 25:20b-21)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Every one of God’s children is a unique creation with talents and gifts that are found in no one else. Each of us is asked to bring our special “twist” to life and to living the Gospel, leaving our impact on the world in a way that no one else can. Are we ever afraid to use our gifts or to be who we are? Fear can cripple us and prevent us from discovering the profound and creative ways in which we can become the person God meant us to be. We like our comfort zones and do not like to be stretched and challenged. Yet this is necessary if we are going to produce the fruit we are capable of producing and live the radical message of the Gospel. For serious Christians, the status quo has got to go!

Fr. Brendan Buckley, OFM Cap.:
It was announced last Sunday that the Capuchin Franciscan Province of St. Mary, because of illnesses, has unexpectedly become immediately in need of two Spanish speaking pastors in Manchester, N.H., and Brooklyn, N.Y. The Provincial Minister has assigned Fr. Brendan to St. Michael’s Church in Brooklyn, to be the pastor/administrator of that parish beginning December 4, 2017. It is with sadness that Fr. Brendan will be leaving the parochial, prison, and Hispanic ministry in our area where he has been so effective and appreciated. We praise God for his presence among us and pray for him as he begins his new ministry. “Thank you Fr. Brendan”.

For our parish there will be one Mass on Thursday, November 23, Thanksgiving Day, at 9:00 a.m. at St. Francis Solanus Church, Interlaken (there will be no morning Mass at St. James). This day is not a holy day but certainly a day to gather as God’s people to praise and offer thanks to God for all blessings we enjoy and with which we have been gifted.

“Our belief in the Real Presence of Christ, body, blood, soul and divinity, the very One Whom we receive in Holy Communion is, therefore, what truly identifies us as Catholics, Christians firmly believing in Christ, uniting us with our ancestors in the faith who first celebrated the Eucharist in the very shadow of Christ’s earthly ministry.” The Bishop’s letter in its entirety may be found on the diocese website.

2017-2018 Catholic Ministries Appeal:
The active phase of our parish CMA campaign continues. Thank you to everyone who has responded with a gift or pledge. Seventy-eight donors have pledged $12,885 which represents 42.17% of our goal. A “thank you” to all who have made a pledge to the Appeal. We ask all households to make a pledge as soon as possible. Pledge envelopes have been mailed and there are envelopes in the foyers of the churches. “Participation is primary, what is pledged is secondary.”

Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ November 12, 2017

Year of the Eucharist June 18, 2017 – June 3, 2018

32nd Sunday Ordinary-nat_1_qtr_EN_4c

First reading:
Resplendent and unfading is wisdom, and she is readily perceived by those who love her, and found by those who seek her. (Wis. 6:12)

Psalm:
My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God. (Ps. 63)

Second reading:
We do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, about those who have fallen asleep, so that you may not grieve like the rest, who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose, so too will God, through Jesus, bring with him those who have fallen asleep. (1 Thes. 4:13-14)

Gospel:
“The bridegroom came and those who were ready went into the wedding feast with him. Then the door was locked. Afterwards the other virgins came and said, ‘Lord, Lord, open the door for us!’ But he said in reply, ‘Amen, I say to you, I do not know you’.” (Mt. 25:10b-12)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Are we ready and prepared for what life will ask of us? The answers to life’s challenges, especially those that involve purpose, meaning, and happiness are not found in material things or by searching the Internet. Many things in life require a journey of the heart and the acquisition of wisdom. When one acquires wisdom, one acquires priceless wealth. Sadly, pursuing wisdom is not valued by our world these days. Examining our lives, pondering the bigger questions, reflecting on where we have been and where we are going, are invaluable exercises that not only bring us wisdom but open our eyes to God’s presence. Those who seek wisdom shall not be disappointed and will always be ready for whatever comes their way.

Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ November 5, 2017

Year of the Eucharist June 18, 2017–June 3, 2018

31 Sunday Ordin.Time-nat_1_qtr_EN_4c

First Reading:
After this I had a vision of a great multitude, which no one could count, from every nation, race, people, and tongue. They stood before the throne and before the Lamb, wearing white robes and holding palm branches in their hands. (Rev. 7:9)

Psalm:
Lord, this is the people that longs to see your face. (Ps. 24)

Second Reading:
Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we shall be has not yet been revealed. We do know that when it is revealed we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. (1 Jn. 3:2)

Gospel:
“Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven.” (Mt. 5:11-12a)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Saints are not only found in the official records of the church; they live among us. They are our brothers and sisters who take Jesus’ teaching on the beatitudes and live it fully. They are the peacemakers, the poor in spirit, the humble, the merciful, and those who challenge our often comfortable lifestyles. We have a cloud of witnesses who stand before us, both in eternity and here on earth, who inspire us to go the distance and fully live the Gospel, even when it is difficult or hurts. They, by example, give us the courage to forge ahead through the most challenging of circumstances. With their inspiration and God’s grace, we can do incredible things.

Catholic Quotes—Words to Inspire the Faithful:

Cemetery Fund Collection:
The parish has two cemeteries, Holy Cross in Ovid and St. James the Apostle in Trumansburg. They both operate with an annual deficit. Cemeteries must strive to maintain a fully funded permanent maintenance fund. The striving is most difficult because the cemeteries do not have the opportunity for income sufficient to cover their costs. Your financial help is appreciated each year when a collection for the cemeteries is taken up. This year a second collection will be taken up this weekend, November 4 and 5, to financially help both cemeteries.

2017 National Vocations Awareness Week:
Did you know that in our country, compared to 50 years ago, there are 20,000 fewer priests and 130,000 fewer religious sisters? At the same time, the Catholic population has continued to grow steadily. Many factors have contributed to the decline: growing secularism, a lengthened period of adolescence, attitudes about celibacy, etc. During Vocation Awareness Week, please pray that young people in today’s society will hear and respond to God’s call and do your part to encourage them to consider the priesthood and religious life.

Parish Ministry Fair:
“We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us.” (Romans 12: 6). By our baptism we are called to share in the ministry of the church, using the gifts and talents God has provided. We invite you to think about your talents. What can you contribute to your church? The Worship Committee will be having a ministry fair at each of our churches this weekend, November 4 and 5. Stop by after Mass and enjoy some food as you speak to members of the various ministries that enrich our parish. You will have an opportunity to ask questions before signing up for the ministry that best fits your gifts and interests.

Parish Choir Rehearsal:
This Thursday, November 9, the parish choir will have a Christmas Mass practice at Holy Cross Church, Ovid, from 6:30–8:00 p.m.

Food Donations:
Next weekend (November 12) food donations may be brought to St. James the Apostle Church and placed on the table in front of the statue off the Blessed Virgin Mary. Monetary donations are also accepted.

Holy Cross Cemetery:
Volunteers are invited to clean the Holy Cross Cemetery in Ovid on Saturday November 18 at 10:00 a.m.

Maintenance Fund Collection:
Next weekend (November 12) there will be a second collection for the support of our parish buildings and grounds.

Hurricanes Harvey and Irma:
It has been reported that our parishioners contributed $6,276.44 for the relief efforts for the victims of Harvey and Irma. This is most generous and inspirational. The Lord will reward you many times over for your help.

Mass Attendance for September:
September average attendance for the Masses: 5:00 p.m. had 79 people; 8:15 a.m. had 81; 9:30 a.m. had 104, and 11:00 a.m. had 71.

Year of the Eucharist:YearofEucharist_150_LOGO (1)
“The quality of sacred music, properly chosen and theologically sound, which appreciates the Church’s rich musical heritage over the centuries, a veritable ‘treasure of inestimable value’ (Sacrosanctum Concilium, no. 112), not restricted by only one period; the décor of the Church which identifies it as a holy place, a consecrated place set apart as the House of God ‘worthy, becoming and beautiful, signs and symbols of things supernatural’ (Sacrosanctum Concilium, no. 122); the Tabernacle, clearly visible and prominently located where Christ resides among His people; and the careful preparation of deacons, readers, servers and the altar and extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, all these very important elements enhance the richness of the Church’s liturgies and inspire the faithful.” The above is taken from Bishop Salvatore R. Matano’s pastoral letter announcing a “Year of the Eucharist” in celebration of the 150 (Sesquicentennial) anniversary of the diocese. The full pastoral letter is available on the diocesan website.

Dinner Dance:
The Parish Council’s Fellowship Committee is hoping to have a parish dinner dance in April. Please consider being part of the planning committee. If interested and able please phone the parish office (607-294-0064) and volunteer. The committee would love to have you.

2017-2018 Catholic Ministries Appeal:
An update on how we are doing: our parish goal for the appeal is $30,549. Sixty-four donors have pledged $10,645 which represents 34.85% of our goal. A “thank you” to all who have made a pledge to the appeal. We ask all households to make a pledge as soon as possible. Pledge envelopes have been mailed and there are envelopes in the foyers of the churches. “Participation is primary, what is pledged is secondary.”

People Helping People:
The Seneca County Transportation Corps is providing rides for residents of Seneca County to medical and dental appointments and other health-related destinations. If you are in need of a ride please phone 315–333–2179.

Substitute Collection Counters Needed:

Seneca Road. This is a free concert open to the public that many area churches perform in. If you are interested and over 15 years of age, please see us in the choir loft before or after the 11:00 a.m. Mass Sunday. You can also contact Debbie Swartz at 607-387-9717 for more information. The deadline to join is November 11.

Notre Dame Retreat House:
“On the Road to Emmaus: Lessons in Discipleship” is the topic of a day retreat at Notre Dame Retreat House. Join us on Tuesday, November 7, at Notre Dame Retreat House, 5151 Foster Rd., Canandaigua, New York. The day schedule is: 9:00 a.m. registration along with coffee and pastries; the conference begins at 9:30; lunch is at noon; followed by reconciliation and mass; the day ends at 3:00 p.m. Please call 585-394-5700 to register. A fee of $25.00 is payable at registration. Fr. Denis has recently been assigned to Notre Dame Retreat House Ministry. From 2008 to 2016, he was professor, scholar-in-residence at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania. From 1988 to 2008, he was professor of the history of moral theology and Christian spirituality at the Alphonsian Academy of the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome.
The collection bin at St. James will be available by November 2 and will be accessible until the end of the month. Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ October 29, 2017

Year of the Eucharist June 18, 2017–June 3, 2018

30th Sunday Ordinary-nat_1_qtr_EN_4c

First Reading:
Thus says the Lord: “You shall not molest or oppress an alien, for you were once aliens yourselves in the land of Egypt. You shall not wrong any widow or orphan. If ever you wrong them and they cry out to me, I will surely hear their cry.” (Ex. 22:20-22)

Psalm:
I love you, Lord, my strength. (Ps. 18)

Second Reading:
And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, receiving the word in great affliction, with joy from the Holy Spirit. (1 Thes. 1:6)

Gospel:
He said to him, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (Mt. 22:37-39)

Live the Liturgy – Inspiration for the Week:
God insists that we treat each other with fairness and love. No compromise is offered here. The great commandment is specific: love God, neighbor, and self. Who is my neighbor? It is not just the person sitting next to me today or the people who live next door. Our neighbor is everyone, especially those most in need: those alien to you or to our country, those who are poor, alone, or abandoned, and even those who are the greatest of sinners. We really struggle with how to live these words. How do we open ourselves to the stranger, the immigrant, those who harm us, those in need, or those with whom we disagree? Pope Francis gives excellent guidance here. We are challenged to stretch our thinking and become more unconditional with others as God is unconditional with us.

All Saints Day:2017_AllSaints_EN_4c
This Wednesday, November 1, is the Solemnity of All Saints and a holy day of obligation. To enhance the day’s festivities there will be a reception after each of the Masses: a coffee hour after the 9:00 a.m. Mass at St. James the Apostle; a lunch after the 12:15 p.m. Mass at St. Francis Solanus; cider and donuts after the 6:00 p.m. Mass at Holy Cross; and cupcakes after the 7:00 p.m. Mass at St. James.

All Souls Day:
This Thursday, November 2, is the Commemoration of all the Faithful Departed (it is not a holy day of obligation). There will be one Mass at 9:00 a.m. at St. James the Apostle. In the boxes of envelopes there is an envelope for All Souls Day for the naming of your beloved deceased. The envelopes will be placed on the altar for the month of November so that the deceased will be remembered in prayer.

Venerable Solanus Casey, OFM Cap.:
On Saturday, November 18, in Detroit, MI, the Capuchin Franciscans’ confrere will be beatified and will be known as Blessed Solanus Casey. This is a most happy event for the Capuchin Franciscan Order and more so for the friars of the United States. He and Blessed Stanley Rother (from Oklahoma and beatified this September 23, 2017) are the only two men, of all the Church’s blessed and saints, born in the United States. A day in the church’s calendar will be assigned to celebrate Solanus’s feast day. To learn more about Solanus Casey go to www.solanuscenter.org/videos.

Cemetery Fund:
The parish has two cemeteries, Holy Cross in Ovid and St. James the Apostle in Trumansburg. They both operate with an annual deficit. Cemeteries must strive to maintain a fully funded permanent maintenance fund. The striving is most difficult because the cemeteries do not have the opportunity for income sufficient to cover their costs. Your financial help is appreciated each year when a collection for the cemeteries is taken up. This year a second collection will be taken up next weekend, November 4 and 5, to financially help both cemeteries.

Holy Cross Cemetery, Ovid:
Parishioners are requested to clean up the graves of their relatives before November 5. Volunteers are invited to clean the cemetery on Saturday, November 18, at 10:00 a.m.

Holy Hour on Fridays:
In keeping with the Diocesan “Year of the Eucharist” commemorating the Diocese of Rochester’s Sesquicentennial Celebration, Holy Hours will occur on Fridays from 7:00–8:00 p.m. with exposition and benediction of the Most Holy Eucharist, at the Parish Center (St. Francis Solanus Church, Interlaken). All are welcome to participate whenever possible. The Holy Hours’ theme and focus will vary throughout the months. The Holy Hours during the month of October will focus on respect life. The Eucharistic Holy Hour for the month of November will be intercession for vocations.

Parish Ministry Fair:
“We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us.” (Romans 12: 6). By our baptism we are called to share in the ministry of the church, using the gifts and talents God has provided. We invite you to think about your talents. How can you contribute to your church? The Worship Committee will be having a ministry fair at each of our churches on November 4 and 5. Stop by after Mass and enjoy some food as you speak to members of the various ministries that enrich our parish. You will have an opportunity to ask questions before signing up for the ministry that best fits your gifts and interests.

Year of the Eucharist:
“…to all who have the privilege of preparing for liturgical celebrations in parishes, in cooperation with and under the guidance and direction of the pastor, parochial vicar and parish administrators, liturgical committees are primarily centers for catechesis and evangelization in which the members work to assure that the sacramental celebrations, culminating in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, are celebrated with solemnity, devotion, reverence and a true spirit of unity, which unites the local Church to the Church Universal and teaches the faith of the Church.” The above is taken from Bishop Salvatore R.

2017-2018 Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA):YearofEucharist_150_LOGO (1)
The theme for this year’s campaign is “Glorifying the Lord by Our Lives.” The CMA affords each of us an opportunity to support the larger Church so that it can meet real needs throughout the diocese. Your support enables the Church to be responsive and caring. Please be generous in your response. Every gift is needed and important! If it is easier, you can make your gift at www.dor.org. You can also pay your pledge off in six installments. Pledge forms, which can be put in the collection or mailed directly to the diocese, are available in the back of the church. Please pray for the success of our efforts. The Parish of Mary, Mother of Mercy has been given the goal of $30,549.

People Helping People:
The Seneca County Transportation Corps is providing rides for residents of Seneca County to medical and dental appointments and other health-related destinations. If you are in need of a ride please phone 315–333–2179.

The collection bin at St. James will be available by November 2 and will be accessible until the end of the month. Distribution is scheduled for December 4–15, Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
