Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ October 22, 2017

Year of the Eucharist June 18, 2017–June 3, 2018

29th Sunday Ordinary nat_1_qtr_EN_4c

First Reading:
I am the LORD and there is no other, there is no God besides me. It is I who arm you, though you know me not, so that toward the rising and the setting of the sun people may know that there is none besides me. I am the LORD, there is no other. (Is. 45:5-6)

Psalm:
Give the Lord glory and honor. (Ps. 96)

Second Reading:
We give thanks to God always for all of you, remembering you in our prayers, unceasingly calling to mind your work of faith and labor of love and endurance in hope of our Lord Jesus Christ, before our God and Father. (1 Thes. 1:2–3)

Gospel:
“Show me the coin that pays the census tax.” Then they handed him the Roman coin. He said to them, “Whose image is this and whose inscription?” They replied, “Caesar’s.” At that he said to them, “Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.” (Mt. 22:19–21)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
If the coin belongs to Caesar, then give it to him. Paying taxes is often unpleasant, but requires little self-investment. We know that a portion of our income must go back to the government, but what then, exactly, belongs to God? God does not seek our financial resources. What belongs to God is something that we sometimes want to keep to ourselves or divide in different places. What belongs to God is our hearts. We owe everything to God, even our very being. Without God we are nothing. God patiently continues to tell the world: “I am the LORD and there is no other, there is no God besides me.” How do we unite the varied allegiances of our hearts into one under God?

Catholic Quotes—Words to Inspire the Faithful:
“Do not be afraid to take a chance on peace, to teach peace, to live peace… Peace will be the last word of history.” ~St. John Paul II

WorldMissionSunday2_17faToday is World Mission Sunday 2017:
Each October, this celebration leads us to the heart of our Christian faith—leads us to mission, as Pope Francis explains. On this day, we are called as baptized Catholics to celebrate and support local churches in Asia, Africa, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Latin America and Europe, an area that covers more than half the territory of the globe. Through the work and witness of mission priests, religious, and lay leaders, the poor receive practical help and experience God’s love and mercy, His hope, and peace. This year, we are invited as well into a special opportunity to engage with Pope Francis and learn more about his missions. To do so, simply scan the image on the posters you see hanging in the foyer of the church or visit ChatWithThePope.org.

Holy Hour on Fridays:
In keeping with the diocesan “Year of the Eucharist” commemorating the Diocese of Rochester’s sesquicentennial celebration, Holy Hours will occur on Fridays from 7:00–8:00 p.m. with exposition and benediction of the Most Holy Eucharist, at the Parish Center (St. Francis Solanus Church, Interlaken). All are welcome to participate whenever possible. The Holy Hours’ theme and focus will vary throughout the months. The Holy Hours during the month of October will focus on respect life.

Holy Cross Cemetery:
Parishioners are requested to clean up the graves of their relatives in Holy Cross Cemetery, Ovid, before November 5. Volunteers are invited to clean the cemetery on Saturday, November 18, at 10:00 a.m.

Parish Ministry Fair:
“We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us.” (Romans 12: 6). By our baptism we are called to share in the ministry of the church, using the gifts and talents God has provided. We invite you to think about your talents. How can you contribute to your church? The Worship Committee will be having a ministry fair at each of our churches on November 4 and 5. Stop by after Mass and enjoy some food as you speak to members of the various ministries that enrich our parish. You will have an opportunity to ask questions before signing up for the ministry that best fits your gifts and interests.

Year of the Eucharist:
“…the Church reminds us that: ‘It is the right of all Christ’s faithful that the Liturgy, and in YearofEucharist_150_LOGO (1)particular the celebration of Holy Mass, should truly be as the Church wishes, according to her stipulations as prescribed in the liturgical books and in other laws and norms…it is the community’s right that the celebration of the Most Holy Eucharist should be carried out in such a manner that it truly stands out as a Sacrament of unity, to the exclusion of all blemishes and actions that might engender divisions and factions in the Church’.” (Redemptionis Sacramentum, no. 12). The above is taken from Bishop Salvatore R. Matano’s pastoral letter announcing a “Year of the Eucharist” in celebration of the 150 (Sesquicentennial) anniversary of the diocese. The full pastoral letter is available on the diocesan website.

Dinner Dance:
The Parish Council’s Fellowship Committee is hoping to have a parish dinner dance in April. Please consider being part of the planning committee. If interested and able please phone the parish office (607-294-0064) and volunteer. The committee would love to have you.

2017-2018 Catholic Ministries Appeal:
Hopefully everyone has received the Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA) mailing by this time and has had a chance to review the materials. Extra copies of the brochure are available in church. The theme for this year’s campaign is “Glorifying the Lord by Our Lives.” The CMA affords each of us an opportunity to support the larger Church so that it can meet real needs throughout the diocese. Your support enables the Church to be responsive and caring. Please be generous in your response. Every gift is needed and important! If it is easier, you can make your gift at www.dor.org. You can also pay your pledge off in six installments. Pledge forms, which can be put in the collection or mailed directly to the diocese, are available in the back of the church. Please pray for the success of our efforts. The Parish of Mary, Mother of Mercy has been given the goal of $30, 549. This is $694 higher than last year’s goal.

Peace Week 2017:

  • Annual Peace Prayer Service: Sunday, October 22, 5:00 p.m., at St. Anthony Church in Groton. Join us for our ninth annual Tompkins County Catholic Community’s prayer for peace, featuring music by the inter-parish choir. At this beautiful evening service, we’ll reflect on our Christian calling to be peacemakers. A soup supper will follow.
  • War and The Environment: Wednesday, October 25, 7:00 p.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Church, in Ithaca. We need to make the connection between peace and care for God’s creation. Presentation by Prof. Charles Geisler, emeritus professor from Cornell’s Department of Development Sociology, on the ways military action destroys the environment.

Notre Dame High School Open House:
Notre Dame High School, grades 7–12, is holding an open house on Sunday, November 5, from 1:00–3:00 p.m. Students and their families are invited to tour the school, meet current students, and engage with the faculty and administration. Notre Dame is a college preparatory school. Notre Dame offers competitive athletic programming along with opportunities to participate in the performing, visual, and language arts. A busing option from the Ithaca area to Notre Dame is available. Notre Dame is located at 1400 Maple Avenue, Elmira, New York, and is currently accepting applications for new students for the 2018–19 academic year. For more information visit: www.notredamehighschool.com or call 607-734-2267.

Need Substitute Collection Counters:
Parishioners interested in helping to count the weekend collection—we need fill-in substitutes. Please volunteer. If interested, phone the parish office at 607-294-0064. Thanks for considering the request.

October is Respect Life Month:
It is reported that doctors who carry out abortions are often torn by the contradiction that they became doctors to preserve life, but use their profession to end it. Here are some confessions from current and former abortionists. Dr. Randall, former abortionist: “They (the women) are never allowed to look at the ultrasound because we knew that if they so much as heard the heartbeat, they wouldn’t want to have an abortion.” Dr. Benjamin Kalish, abortionist: “Even now I feel a little peculiar about it, because as a physician I was trained to conserve life, and here I am destroying it.” Dr. Szenes, abortionist: “All of a sudden one noticed that at the time of the saline infusion there was a lot of activity in the uterus. That’s not fluid currents. That’s obviously the fetus being distressed by swallowing the concentrated salt solution and kicking violently and that’s to all intents and purposes, the death trauma…somebody has to do it, and unfortunately we are the executioners in this instance.” Dr. Beverly McMillan, former abortionist: “I got to where I couldn’t stand to look at the little bodies anymore.”

Sisters of St. Joseph of Rochester:
The sisters have a prayer ministry and throughout 2017, Sister Dolores Bachman and Sister Anne Marie Burns will be praying for our parish and parishioners. Let us keep the sisters in our prayers as an expression of gratitude. Sisters of St. Joseph website: www.ssjrochester.org.

Pregnancy Care Center of the Finger Lakes:
Pregnancy Care Center of the Finger Lakes, located at 551 Exchange St. in Geneva, is offering a “Forgiven and Set Free” post abortive ten-week session beginning October 4 until December 13. There is no cost involved. “If you regret your abortion, you are not alone. Let us help you learn to forgive yourself. Pleased join us for this healing ministry program.” For more information phone 315 789 0708.

Toiletries and Hygiene Products:
There is a basket in the vestibule of St. James church for donations of toiletries. The request comes from Catholic Charities which is in need of items like shampoo, toothpaste, diapers etc. The items will be transferred to the Catholic Charities office in Ithaca.

Cancer Services Program (Cortland and Tompkins Counties):
This a program that provides free cancer screenings (breast, cervical, and colorectal) to women from ages 40–64 and men ages 50–64, who are uninsured or have health insurance that does not cover these screenings and who meet income eligibility requirements. These services are provided in local health centers, doctor’s offices, and hospitals. For more information call 1-866 442 2262.

Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ October 15, 2017

Year of the Eucharist June 18, 2017–June 3, 2018

28th Sunday Ordinary-nat_1_qtr_EN_4c

First Reading:
He will destroy death forever. The Lord GOD will wipe away the tears from every face; the reproach of his people he will remove from the whole earth; for the LORD has spoken. (Is. 25:8)

Psalm:
I shall live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. (Ps. 23)

Second Reading:
I can do all things in him who strengthens me. (Phil. 4:13)

Gospel:
“The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son?” Tell those invited: ‘Behold, I have prepared my banquet, my calves and fattened cattle are killed, and everything is ready; come to the feast.’” (Mt. 22:2, 4bc)

Live the Liturgy – Inspiration for the Week:
Pope Francis constantly reminds us of the wideness of God’s mercy and its unconditional character. God is always patiently loving his children and opening the doors to his heart. We must, however, freely choose to accept God’s invitation and join in the feast of his love. We desire many things and we have restless hearts. We often attempt to quench our desire with things that are short-lived and shallow. All of us long to be satisfied and at peace. How do we announce to the world, in ways that are convincing and without judgment, that it is really God whom we seek?

Catholic Quotes—Words to Inspire the Faithful:
“Therefore be merciful, even as your Father is also merciful.” ~ Luke 6:36

Year of the Eucharist:YearofEucharist_150_LOGO (1)
“As early as the second century we have the witness of St. Justin Martyr who outlines the order of the Eucharistic celebration. Recorded in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, St. Justin Martyr explains to the pagan emperor Antoninus Pius around the year 155 A.D. what Christians did ‘on the day we call the day of the sun.’ (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 1345). Here one finds outlined the essential elements of the Mass that we still celebrate in our own time.” The above is taken from Bishop Salvatore R. Matano’s pastoral letter announcing a “Year of the Eucharist” in celebration of the 150 (Sesquicentennial) anniversary of the diocese. The full pastoral letter is available on the diocesan website.

Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ October 8, 2017

Year of the Eucharist June 18, 2017 – June 3, 2018

27 Sunday Ordin.nat_1_qtr_EN_4c

First Reading:
The vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, and the people of Judah are his cherished plant. (Is. 5:7a)

Psalm:
The vineyard of the Lord is the house of Israel. (Ps. 80)

Second Reading:
Brothers and sisters: Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. (Phil. 4:6-7)

Gospel:
Jesus said to them, “Did you never read in the Scriptures: The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone…? Therefore, I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that will produce its fruit.” (Mt. 21:42ab, 43)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
How often do we find ourselves wanting what is not ours? Greed, envy, and even gluttony lead us to a bad end. We live in a world that feels very entitled. Many people believe that wants and needs ought to be provided or simply given to them, without any work or effort. It is easy to feel that we have received the short end of the stick or less than what we deserve. However, feeling shortchanged makes it is impossible to walk with gratitude in our hearts and feel a sense of responsibility, the two essential elements of the spiritual life. Are we grateful?

Catholic Quotes—Words to Inspire the Faithful:
“I live by the mercy of Jesus, to whom I owe everything and from whom I expect everything.” ~St. John XXIII

Outside of those times, the Sacrament can always be celebrated by making an appointment with one of the priests.

Year of the Eucharist:YearofEucharist_150_LOGO (1)
“In celebrating the Most Holy Eucharist, we unite ourselves to those who have gone before us reaching back to apostolic times. ‘If from the beginning Christians have celebrated the Eucharist and in a form whose substance has not changed despite the great diversity of times and liturgies, it is because we know ourselves to be bound by the command the Lord gave on the eve of His Passion: “Do this in remembrance of me” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 1356). The Eucharist indeed belongs to Christ who graciously shares His presence with us through His bride, the Church. The Eucharist is not a mere cultural phenomenon restricted by certain geographies, historical periods or philosophies, but rather it transcends all space, time and all political and social ideologies; it finds its origin in Christ. “Christians have the ardent obligation to be open to an act that is so mysterious that they will never be able to perform it by themselves; the sacrifice of Christ. In the thought of the Council Fathers (at Vatican II), the Liturgy is a divine action…. In the presence of it, we are overcome with the silence of admiration and reverence.” (Robert Cardinal Sarah, The Power of Silence, p. 131). The above is taken from Bishop Salvatore R. Matano’s pastoral letter announcing a “Year of the Eucharist” in celebration of the 150 (Sesquicentennial) anniversary of the diocese. The full pastoral letter is available on the diocesan website.

Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ October 1, 2017

Year of the Eucharist June 18, 2017—June 3, 2018

26th Sunday Ordinary nat_1_qtr_EN_4c

First Reading:
But if he turns from the wickedness he has committed, he does what is right and just, he shall preserve his life. (Ez. 18:27)

Psalm:
Remember your mercies, O Lord. (Ps. 25)

Second Reading:
Have in you the same attitude that is also in Christ Jesus, Who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God something to be grasped. (Phil. 2:5-6)

Gospel:
“When John came to you in the way of righteousness, you did not believe him; but tax collectors and prostitutes did. Yet even when you saw that, you did not later change your minds and believe him.” (Mt. 21:32)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Saying and doing are two very different things. Often, we say we are going to do the right thing but then we do not. We get distracted by a self-focused concern, apathy, fear, and a number of other excuses. The choice to act with virtue is always before us. The ability to choose is one of God’s gifts. Fully living the Gospel means that we choose to “practice what we preach.” Faith without action serves no purpose.

Words to Inspire the Faithful:
“For it is in giving that we receive.” ~ Prayer of St. Francis

Respect Life Sunday:
Respect Life Sunday is observed every year on the first Sunday in October (Respect Life Month). This year’s theme, “Be Not Afraid,” is being featured from October 2017 through September 2018. In our present social context, marked by a dramatic struggle between the “culture of life” and the “culture of death,” there is need to develop a deep critical sense, capable of discerning true values and authentic needs. “What is urgently called for is a general mobilization of consciences and a united ethical effort to activate a great campaign in support of life. All together, we must build a new culture of life. St. John Paul II, The Gospel of Life, no. 95 (emphasis added).

Blessing of Animals:
This Wednesday, October 4, is the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi. St. Francis praised and thanked God for all His creation. A custom of this day is the blessing of animals. All are invited to bring their pets for a blessing (para-liturgical service) that will take place at 6:30 p.m. on the feast day at the Parish Center (St. Francis Solanus Church, Interlaken).

Hurricane Irma Aid:
Hurricane Irma caused devastating damage in the southeastern United States and many areas of the Caribbean. Our parish will conduct a second collection this weekend to assist victims of the hurricane. All funds collected will be used in affected areas to support humanitarian aid and assistance with long-term efforts to restore impacted communities, including the pastoral and reconstruction needs of the Church in those areas. If you use a check for the collection, kindly make out the check to Mary, Mother of Mercy and indicate “Irma Aid” in the memo/notes field. Thank you for your generosity.

This Sunday Liturgical Posture Change:
One of the items in the pastoral letter from Bishop Matano announcing a “Year of the Eucharist” states the liturgical norm of the Roman Catholic Church that at Mass, after the Lamb of God, the assembly is to kneel. He expresses that in our churches we are to follow the rubric thereby keeping in union with the universal church. Our parish will begin to follow this norm this weekend.

Year of the EucharistYearofEucharist_150_LOGO (1)
“As a prescribed act of reverence during the continuing after the ‘Year of the Eucharist,’ I am asking that, where possible (according to existing accommodations for sitting and kneeling), we renew and observe the prescription stated in the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, which reads: ‘In the Dioceses of the United States of America the faithful should kneel after the singing or recitation of the Sanctus (“Holy, Holy, Holy”) until after the Amen of the Eucharistic Prayer…’ and that ‘The faithful kneel after the Agnus Dei (“Lamb of God”) …’ (General Instruction of the Roman Missal, no 43). This normative practice of kneeling truly is a humble manifestation of our reverence before the One whom we are soon to receive. This solemn time of prayer prepares us interiorly to receive the Christ of the Eucharist as Saint John the Baptist’s proclamation, ‘Behold the Lamb of God, behold Him who takes away the sins of the world…’ (John 1:29), unites with the Centurion’s ardent profession of faith, ‘Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.’ (Matthew 8:8).” The above is taken from Bishop Salvatore R. Matano’s pastoral letter announcing a “Year of the Eucharist” in celebration of the 150 (Sesquicentennial) anniversary of the diocese. The full pastoral letter is available on the diocesan website.

Ministry Fair at Your Church:

Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ September 24, 2017

Year of the Eucharist June 18, 2017– June 3, 2018

A133OT25_vib_qtr_EN_4c

First Reading:
For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the LORD. As high as the heavens are above the earth, so high are my ways above your ways and my thoughts above your thoughts. (Is. 55:8–9)

Psalm:
The Lord is near to all who call upon him. (Ps. 145)

Second Reading:
If I go on living in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. And I do not know which I shall choose. I am caught between the two. I long to depart this life and be with Christ, for that is far better. (Phil. 1:22–23)

Gospel:
“‘Did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Take what is yours and go. What if I wish to give this last one the same as you? Or am I not free to do as I wish with my own money? Are you envious because I am generous?’ Thus, the last will be first, and the first will be last.” (Mt. 20:13c–16)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
True love does not measure itself against the love of others. If I am truly in love with God there is no need to compare myself with others or succumb to jealousy if others appear closer than I or because I have loved longer. Authentic love does not consider benefits or privileges. It simply desires to be in the presence of the One who is loved. God invites all of his children into a relationship with him. It does not matter when along our life’s journey we accept that invitation. It is only important that we do. In our Gospel today, the owner of the vineyard promised the usual daily wage to everyone, regardless of what time each started working. God promises love and eternal life to all who enter into relationship with him. It does not matter when. This is God’s pure merciful gift. It is God’s to give as God desires.

Catholic Quotes—Words to Inspire the Faithful:
“Let us love God, my brothers, let us love God. But let it be with the strength of our arms and the sweat of our brow.” ~St. Vincent de Paul

Liturgical Posture:
One of the items in the pastoral letter from Bishop Matano announcing a “Year of the Eucharist” states the liturgical norm of the Roman Catholic Church that at Mass, after the Lamb of God, the assembly is to kneel. He expresses that in our churches we are to follow the rubric thereby keeping in union with the universal church. Our parish will begin to follow this norm next Sunday, October 1.

Year of the Eucharist: YearofEucharist_150_LOGO (1)
“If the Apostle Paul tells us ‘that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth’ (Philippians 2:10), how much more so must we bend the knee in His very presence in the Most Blessed Sacrament. In the earliest biblical times, kneeling was a profound act of worship … flowing from the person’s attentiveness and humility before the Lord. This practice is even more evident throughout the New Testament; the rich young man approached Jesus and knelt, seeking eternal Life (Mark 10:17); Saint Stephen prayed on his knees for his persecutors to be forgiven (Acts 7:60); Saint Peter knelt and prayed when he acknowledged his sinfulness (Luke 5:8), and when he prayed at Tabitha’s deathbed (Acts 9:40); St. Paul knelt and prayed with the Church in Ephesus (Acts 20:36 and the entire Pauline community in Tyre knelt together in prayers (Acts 21:5). Yet, more poignant than all these examples is Jesus Christ, who prayed on bended knee to His Father, His body united to his mind and soul, seeking to know and fulfill the Father’s will. (Luke 22:41).” The above is taken from Bishop Salvatore R. Matano’s pastoral letter announcing a “Year of the Eucharist” in celebration of the 150 (Sesquicentennial) anniversary of the diocese. The full pastoral letter is available on the diocesan website.

First Reading:
Forgive your neighbor’s injustice; then when you pray, your own sins will be forgiven. (Sir. 28:2)

Psalm:
The Lord is kind and merciful, slow to anger, and rich in compassion. (Ps. 103)

Second Reading:
For if we live, we live for the Lord, and if we die, we die for the Lord; so then, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s. (Rom. 14:7-9)

Gospel:
Peter approached Jesus and asked him, “Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often must I forgive? As many as seven times?” Jesus answered, “I say to you, not seven times but seventy-seven times.” (Mt. 18:21-22)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Relationships are the focus of our reflection again this week, calling us to practice forgiveness unconditionally. This is a difficult thing for us to do. Forgiving someone does not mean that we necessarily tolerate or condone their behavior. Rather, it has to do with letting go of the anger and the hurt that really is more self-destructive than productive. We are called to recognize the brokenness and sinfulness of each other. We may, at times, have to walk away from an abusive or destructive relationship. However, keeping in mind the lessons it taught, we can free ourselves from its hurtful grasp by learning how to forgive as God forgives. It’s a tall order.

Words to Inspire the Faithful:
“Pray, hope, and don’t worry.” ~St. Padre Pio

More information about the Catholic Campaign for Human Development can be found at www.usccb.org/cchd/collection.

Year of the Eucharist:
“Simple acts of reverence such as genuflecting to the Eucharistic Lord in the tabernacle and kneeling as liturgically prescribed by the Church (while pastorally appreciating health concerns which do not always make this possible) have been overlooked or ignored at times, perhaps reflecting a certain unconscious hesitation to assume a posture of humility before God and mistakenly believing that humanity has become God’s equal.” The above is taken from Bishop Salvatore R. Matano’s pastoral letter announcing a “Year of the Eucharist” in celebration of the 150 (Sesquicentennial) anniversary of the diocese. The full pastoral letter is available on the diocesan website.

Relationships are difficult, requiring honesty, dialogue, respect, and tolerance. We can easily offend one another, even by doing the simplest of things. Feelings can be hurt and relationships can become hurtful. Sometimes, our own wounds end up wounding others. When division or discord results, rather than responding with anger, judgment, and vindication, Jesus instructs us to be compassionate, tolerant, respectful, and forgiving. We can do this even when we have to confront someone with the truth, which may not always be well received. Even with our brokenness, we are all an image of God and should do all in our power to properly resolve conflicts.
Words to Inspire the Faithful:
“It is simply impossible to lead, without the aid of prayer, a virtuous life.” ~ St. John Chysostom

Second Collection Today:
As you know, Hurricane Harvey has caused unprecedented and catastrophic damage to the Houston and southeastern Texas region and southwestern parts of Louisiana. Recovery will take years. Not only our prayers but our financial assistance is urgently needed to assist victims, help in the massive recovery effort, and provide pastoral and rebuilding support to impacted dioceses. Today, our second collection will be forwarded to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and used to assist in recovery and rebuild efforts. Please give generously. Checks can be made out to the Parish of Mary, Mother of Mercy, with “Houston” in the memo field. For those who use the parish offertory box of envelopes there are envelopes labeled “Special Collection” located in the back of the box.

Regarding the Maintenance Fund Envelope:
Because of the urgent request to help the victims of Hurricane Harvey, the maintenance fund collection will not be a second collection this weekend. Please deposit the maintenance fund envelope in the regular offertory collection.

When Writing Checks to the Parish:
This is a reminder to please not make checks out to the church name but to the parish name, “Mary, Mother of Mercy.”

Brief Presentation Next Weekend:
Mr. Mark R. Capellazzi, from the diocese’s St. Bernard’s School of Theology and Ministry, will give a brief address next weekend at the Masses to share what is new and exciting at St. Bernard’s and to make parishioners aware of the video conferencing location in Auburn.

Year of the Eucharist:
“In the practice of religion today, it appears the horizontal dimension of human relationships has been so emphasized that it has often overshadowed the vertical dimension in our relationship with God. … Any renewal that comes to us through the liturgy must begin with the understanding of the divine and supernatural nature of the Most Holy Eucharist. When we come together for Holy Mass, we do not gather simply to form a community, but rather, as a community, to profess our faith in Jesus Christ and as the Church instructs us to ‘offer the sacrifice of praise in thanksgiving to the Father for all that God has made good, beautiful, and just in creation and in humanity.’ (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 1359).” The above is taken from Bishop Salvatore R. Matano’s pastoral letter announcing a “Year of the Eucharist” in celebration of the 150 (Sesquicentennial) anniversary of the diocese. The full pastoral letter is available on the diocesan website.

Our parish will begin to follow this norm on Sunday, October 1. For uniformity sake please continue to stand after the Lamb of God until that October 1 date.

Year of the Eucharist June 18, 2017–June 3, 2018

22 Sunday OrdinTime nat_1_qtr_EN_4c

First Reading:
I say to myself, I will not mention him, I will speak in his name no more. But then it becomes like fire burning in my heart, imprisoned in my bones; I grow weary holding it in, I cannot endure it. (Jr. 20:9)

Psalm:
My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God. (Ps. 63)

Second Reading:
I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, your spiritual worship. (Rom. 12:1)

Gospel:
“Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? Or what can one give in exchange for his life?” (Mt. 16:24b-26)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Even as people of faith we often find ourselves reasoning our way through our trials and difficulties. It makes a huge difference using our own eyes and not those of God. God knows that we live in an imperfect world filled with suffering, pain, difficulties, disappointments, and death; all part of the mix. Jesus shows us by example that when we encounter hardships God transforms them into something better. We do not need to despair. God gives us hope. When we view our lives through God’s eyes and not our own this gift of hope and transformation becomes very apparent. We must lose our lives in order to gain them.

Year of the Eucharist:
Taken from Bishop Salvatore R. Matano’s pastoral letter announcing a “Year of the Eucharist” in celebration of the 150 (Sesquicentennial) anniversary of the diocese: “The sad and continuing decline of those faithfully attending Mass each week gives evidence that a significant number of Catholics do not understand or have not been taught the reality of the union of Christ and the Church and of Christ’s Real Presence at every celebration of the Eucharist. We continue to struggle to address this very disturbing reality. In fact, recent polls, while perhaps questionable, are no less disconcerting when they indicate the high percentage of Catholics who do not grasp the theology of the Real Presence or simply do not believe that Christ is truly present when bread and wine become His very body, blood, soul and divinity at the consecration of the Mass. Yet the Church has taught clearly and consistently that ‘In the institution narrative, the power of the words and the action of Christ, and the power of the Holy Spirit, make sacramentally present under the species of bread and wine Christ’s body and blood, his sacrifice offered on the cross once for all.’ (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 1353)” The full pastoral letter is available on the diocesan website.

Year of the Eucharist June 18, 2017–June 3, 2018

21 Sunday Ordinary keys vib_qtr_EN_4c

First Reading:
I will place the key of the House of David on Eliakim’s shoulder; when he opens, no one shall shut when he shuts, no one shall open. (Is. 22:22)

Psalm:
Lord, your love is eternal; do not forsake the work of your hands. (Ps. 138)

Second Reading:
Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How inscrutable are his judgments and how unsearchable his ways! (Rom. 11:33)

Gospel:
“I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” Then he strictly ordered his disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ. (Mt. 16:19-20)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
We all know the given answers to the question: who is Jesus? Son of God, Son of Man, Messiah, Lord, and the Christ are some that immediately come to mind. But, who do YOU say that Jesus is? Who we need or want Jesus to be becomes the key to unlocking a relationship with God. For some, Jesus is just a prophet, a wise man, or an inspirational figure in history. These labels keep Jesus in the past and prevent us from really having a living, vibrant relationship with him. If Jesus is more than this to you, then who is he and what purpose does he serve in your life?

Words to Inspire the Faithful:

Year of the Eucharist:
“When St. John Paul II declared The Year of the Most Holy Eucharist …in 2004, he did so realizing that it was very necessary to recapture the transcendent and sublime nature of the Most Holy Eucharist and to reemphasize the sacrificial and sacramental bond between Christ and His Church. The essential union needed between the Bridegroom and the Bride is well stated by Cardinal Robert Sarah, Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments: ‘The Church is the people of God that becomes the Body of Christ. She is born from the opened side of Christ, for our salvation. Christ is the Alpha and the Omega of the Church. Without God, the Church is nothing but a storm-tossed boat. History shows that the crisis of the Church can never be separated from the crisis of God. Without God, she is eclipsed, like a body separated from the light that illuminates it. Today, there is a serious problem because we are no longer aware of the supernatural bond that exists between Christ and His Church.’” Taken from Bishop Salvatore R. Matano’s pastoral letter announcing a Year of the Eucharist in celebration of the 150 (Sesquicentennial) anniversary of the diocese. The full pastoral letter is available on the diocesan website.

Jesus Calls all of us

Liturgical Posture:
One of the items in Bishop Matano’s pastoral letter announcing a year of the Eucharist states the liturgical norm of the Roman Catholic Church that at Mass, after the Lamb of God, the assembly is to kneel. He expresses that in our churches we are to follow the rubric thereby keeping in union with the universal church. Our parish will eventually, and soon, adopt this norm and a date will be set for its implementation. For uniformity sake please continue to stand after the Lamb of God until the date is announced for the change. This announcement is in preparation for the eventual change.

Parish Feast Day Celebration:
Save the date: Sunday, September 10, at the St. Fidelis Friary Boathouse for the celebration of our feast day for Mary, Mother of Mercy. A Mass at 1:00 p.m. on the friary grounds is planned. The annual parish picnic will follow the Mass.

Parish Choir:
Rehearsals will begin on Tuesday, August 29, at Holy Cross Church, 6:30–8:00 p.m. The choir will be rehearsing for Advent, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. All parishioners are welcome to join the parish choir. We are especially in need of altos, tenors, and instrumentalist of all kinds. For more information please contact Jessica Portillo at  or 210 268 7662.

Sacrament of Reconciliation:
Beginning September 8, 2017, Confessions will be heard at the Parish Center (St. Francis Solanus Church, Interlaken) on Fridays from 6:30 to 7:00 p.m. Confessional times at St. James the Apostle will be changed to Saturdays from 4:00 to 4:30 p.m. The Sacrament of Reconciliation may always be celebrated at any time by appointment with one of the priests.

Socials on the Solemnity of the Assumption:
We express gratitude to those who planned and provided for the social gatherings after the Masses on the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (August 15). “Thank you” to Carol Kuklo (coffee hour after the 9:00 a.m. Mass); Gerry and Millie Messmer (12:15 p.m. Mass followed by sandwiches); Phyllis Motill (after the 6:00 p.m. Mass providing wine, cheese, and deserts); and Laurie Miller (following the 7:00 p.m. Mass with wine and cheese). The gatherings to enhance the Holy Day celebration were most relaxing and pleasant.

Great Links:
The New York State Catholic Conference has an excellent website, http://www.nyscatholic.org. It is a good way to stay informed of the issues and a great way for each to quickly notify your legislators regarding issues that concern you. Another link is the Catholic Charities, USA offering a variety of helpful programs, https://catholiccharitiesusa.org/advocacy-and-policy.

Retreat Day:
There will be a retreat day on Tuesday, September 5, at the Notre Dame Retreat House, 5151 Foster Rd., Canandaigua, NY. The presenter will be Deacon Dan Callan with the theme “Eucharistic Living”. The day’s schedule is: 9:00 a.m. registration along with coffee and pastries, 9:30 conference, lunch at noon, reconciliation and Mass, ending at 3:00 p.m. For more details on the presentation and what the day offers, please visit the website: notredameretreat.org.

National Day of Remembrance:
On Saturday, September 9, pro-life Americans will honor the memory of the more than 50 million unborn victims of abortion during the “National Day of Remembrance for Aborted Children.” Solemn prayer services will be held simultaneously at gravesites around the country where abortion victims have been buried, as well as at many other memorial sites dedicated in their honor. A memorial service is scheduled for St. Mary’s Church, Waterloo, NY, for Sunday, September 10, at 10:30 a.m. All are welcome.

Pro-Life:
“For thou didst form my inward parts; Thou didst knit me together in my mother’s womb” Psalm 139:13. Which is an accurate description: “Pro-life” or “Pro-Choice”? “Pro-life” is an accurate description because proponents of this position wish to preserve all life, including the life of the most defenseless in our society—the unborn baby. “Pro-choice” is misleading because proponents of this position never offer a choice to the unborn baby and frequently never consult the baby’s father. It may be the “choice” of the mother who in many instances is feeling desperate and not properly informed. It may also be the business “choice” of the for-profit abortion clinic and the fee-for-service abortionist. However, “pro-death” would be a more accurate description for the “pro-choice” position because an abortion always results in the death of an unborn baby. In an attempt to make abortion more palatable and acceptable, abortion proponents speak of and defend what they refer to as “reproductive rights.” Again, such terminology is deliberately misleading because an abortion has nothing to do with reproduction. Furthermore, the unborn baby is stripped of all “rights,” so again the description is blatantly inappropriate.

Annual Hoedown for Hunger:
The Geneva Community Lunch Program, which serves over 15,000 meals each year, is sponsoring this event. The “hoedown” will take place on Wednesday, September 13, beginning at 5:00 p.m. at Geneva on the Lake. The cost is $35.00 per person or for two $65.00. Music will be provided by Rick Hoyt and the Cool Country Club with special guest caller Bob Nicholson. For more information contact Rhonda Zettlemoyer at 315 789 2235 ext. 104 or . Tickets need to be purchased by September 6.

Extra Vegetables and Fruit:
Don’t let your veggies grow up to be compost! Donate extra produce (vegetables, fruit, and eggs) from your garden or CSA share at 94 West Main Street Trumansburg every Monday 9:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m. until October 1. It will be distributed to a local family the next day. No donation is too small. For more information visit http://friendshipdonations.org/hubs

Seneca County Veterans Service Agency:
The deputy director of the Seneca County Veterans Service Agency will be meeting with clients every first and third Thursday of the month regarding benefits. These meetings will be held at the Romulus Municipal Building, 1435 Prospect Street in Willard between 7:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Clients will be seen by appointment only. Please phone 315 651 0430.

Pro-Life:
“For thou didst form my inward parts; Thou didst knit me together in my mother’s womb” Psalm 139:13. Eucharistic Living:
Deacon Dan Callan (St. Charles Borromeo Parish) will present a retreat on “Eucharistic Living” on Tuesday, September 5, as a day retreat at Notre Dame Retreat House (5151 Foster Rd., Canandaigua, NY). The day’s schedule is: 9:00 a.m. registration along with coffee and pastries; 9:30 a.m. conference begins; lunch at noon; reconciliation and mass; day ends at 3:00 p.m. For more details on the presentation and what the day offers, please visit our website: notredameretreat.orgYou may call 585-394-5700 to register. August 20, 2017 ~ Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Year of the Eucharist June 18, 2017 – June 3, 2018

20th Sunday Ordinary Time nat_1_qtr_EN_4c Horiz

First Reading:
Thus says the LORD: Observe what is right, do what is just; for my salvation is about to come, my justice, about to be revealed. (Is. 56:1)

Psalm:
O God, let all the nations praise you! (Ps. 67)

Second Reading:
For the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable. (Rom. 11:29)

Gospel:
“It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs.” She said, “Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters.” Then Jesus said to her in reply, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.” And the woman’s daughter was healed from that hour. (Mt. 15:26b-28)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Our relationships often need reconciling and healing. While it is easy to say, it is often difficult to achieve. Sometimes, reconciling requires that we take down the barriers that are sources of division, remove our prejudices, look beyond differences, and see the “sameness” that connects us one to another. Of course, each party has to be willing to do this in order for healing to occur. Our Gospel shows us the healing that can occur when both parties are willing participants.

Year of the Eucharist
“Our 150th anniversary celebration provides the ideal opportunity to renew our participation in and the fidelity to the celebration of the Eucharistic sacrifice as a community and as individual participants. ‘The Most Holy Eucharist is the most august Sacrament, in which Christ the Lord Himself is contained, offered and received, and by which the Church constantly lives and grows. The Eucharistic Sacrifice, the memorial of the death and resurrection of the Lord, in which the sacrifice of the cross is perpetuated over the centuries, is the summit and source of all Christian worship and life; it signifies and effects the unity of the people of God and achieves the building up of the Body of Christ.’ (Code of Canon Law, canon 897)” The above was taken from Bishop Salvatore R. Matano’s pastoral letter announcing a Year of the Eucharist in celebration of the 150 (Sesquicentennial) anniversary of the diocese. The full pastoral letter is available on the diocesan website.

Call for Prayer and Unity:
Cardinal Daniel N. DiNardo, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), and Bishop Frank Dewane, chair of the USCCB Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development, are calling on all people of goodwill to join in prayer and unity in response to the violent protest and deadly attack in Charlottesville, Virginia. “As we learn more about the horrible events of yesterday, our prayer turns today, on the Lord’s Day, to the people of Charlottesville who offered a counter example to the hate marching in the streets. Let us unite ourselves in the spirit of hope offered by the clergy, people of faith, and all people of good will who peacefully defended their city and country. We stand against the evil of racism, white supremacy and neo-Nazism. We stand with our sisters and brothers united in the sacrifice of Jesus, by which love’s victory over every form of evil is assured. At Mass, let us offer a special prayer of gratitude for the brave souls who sought to protect us from the violent ideology displayed yesterday. Let us especially remember those who lost their lives. Let us join their witness and stand against every form of oppression.”

Summer Program:
There were over twenty-five students who participated in the summer religion education/formation program from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day, August 7–11, at the St. Fidelis Friary Boat House We are most grateful to the organizers and teachers: Andrew Morpurgo, Jeannie Wiggins, Jennifer Sharp, Michelle Tinque, Helen Arco, Tanya Grove, and Fawn Updike. Thanks to the parents for registering their children and getting them to and from the boat house. It was a great experience for all.
