August 13, 2017 ~ Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Year of the Eucharist June 18, 2017 – June 3, 2018

19th Sunday Orindary Horiz.trad_2_qtr_EN_4c

First Reading:
After the earthquake there was fire—but the LORD was not in the fire. After the fire there was a tiny whispering sound. When he heard this, Elijah hid his face in his cloak and went and stood at the entrance of the cave. (1 Kgs. 19:12-13a)

Psalm:
Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation. (Ps. 85)

Second Reading:
For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my own people, my kindred according to the flesh. (Rom. 9:3)

Gospel:
Peter said to him in reply, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw how strong the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” (Mt. 14:28-30)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Peter saw Jesus walking on the water and began to walk toward him. He became frightened at how strong the wind was and began to sink. He took his focus off of Jesus and allowed his fears to get the best of him. Fear often gets the best of us and cripples us. We sink. Many of our actions and thoughts are motivated by fear. Think of how many opportunities you have missed because of fear. Jesus tells us to trust and to meet each day with faith and confidence. God is with us. We have nothing to fear.

Words to Inspire the Faithful:
“Never be afraid of loving the Blessed Virgin too much. You can never love her more than Jesus did.” ~St. Maximilian Kolbe

Holy Day Readings, Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, August 15, 2017:

First Reading:
A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. (Rev. 12:1)

Psalm:
The queen stands at your right hand, arrayed in gold. (Ps. 45)

Second Reading:
Brothers and sisters: Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through man, the resurrection of the dead came also through man. (1 Cor. 15:20-21)

Gospel:
“From this day all generations will call me blessed: the Almighty has done great things for me and holy is his Name.” (Lk. 1:48b-49)

Live the Liturgy ~ Inspiration for the Week:
Mary’s love for Jesus was surpassed by none other. She had a special love for her Son, who is God, that made a claim on her entire being, body and soul. It is no wonder then, that upon her death Mary was taken body and soul into heaven so that she in her totality could dwell forever with her Son. Our celebration gives us the opportunity to ponder what heaven may be like and help us to long, even more fervently, for the fulfillment and joy that only God can eternally provide.

August 6, 2017 ~ The Transfiguration of the Lord

Year of the Eucharist June 18, 2017 – June 3, 2018

A614Transfig_contemp_1_qtr_EN_4c

First Reading:
The one like a Son of man received dominion, glory, and kingship; all peoples, nations, and languages serve him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that shall not be taken away, his kingship shall not be destroyed. (Dn. 7:14)

Psalm:
The Lord is king, the Most High over all the earth. (Ps. 97)

Second Reading:
We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven while we were with him on the holy mountain. (2 Pt. 1:18)

Gospel:
While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud cast a shadow over them, then from the cloud came a voice that said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” (Mt 17:5)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Today our Gospel presents us with the story of the transfiguration of Jesus. We hear God say, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” Because of our baptism, we share in the same intimate relationship with the Father that Jesus has. This intimate relationship we have with God can transform us, just as it transformed Jesus. We, too, can radiate with love and newness of life and then help in transforming and positively impacting the lives of others. How has your relationship with God transformed you?

Catholic Quotes—Words to Inspire the Faithful:
“Hold your eyes on God and leave the doing to him. That is all the doing you have to worry about.” ~St. Jane Frances de Chantal

Year of the Eucharist:
“When we come to the celebration of Holy Mass or any of the Sacraments with a true spirit of humility and gratitude, it Jesus Calls all of usessentially forms our attitude toward the sacramental nature of the Church and, in particular, our reception of the Lord in Holy Communion. Realizing that in the sacraments, especially in the Eucharist, Jesus becomes one with us, we then approach Him not first asking what is in it for me, but how can I possibly thank the omnipotent God Who has chosen to make His home within me! The Sacraments, the Most Holy Eucharist, belong to God who graciously invites us to participate in His life through these personal meetings with Him. It is truly proper then that the prayers of the Mass authentically, prayerfully and solemnly reflect the divine reality which they signify.” (Taken from Bishop Salvatore R. Matano’s pastoral letter announcing a Year of the Eucharist in celebration of the 150 [Sesquicentennial] anniversary of the diocese. The full pastoral letter is available on the diocesan website.)

17th Sunday Ordinary nature Horiz4c

First Reading:
“Give your servant, therefore, an understanding heart to judge your people and to distinguish right from wrong. For who is able to govern this vast people of yours?” (1 Kings 3:9)

Psalm:
Lord, I love your commands. (Ps. 119)

Second Reading:
Brothers and sisters: We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. (Rom. 8:28)

Gospel:
“The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field, which a person finds and hides again, and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.” (Mt. 13:44)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
As human beings, we desire to find happiness. This desire is so strong that we often go to great lengths to discover and obtain it. Unfortunately, our search sometimes brings us to the wrong places. We mistakenly think that money, certain possessions, social status, popularity, and even power and control can satisfy the longing that exists in our hearts. Time and again, one after another, these things come up empty and we find ourselves with the same unfulfilled longing gnawing at us deep within. It is only the kingdom of God that can satisfy our desire and that ache. We are made and hardwired for this. When we discover it, we know that we have found something very special–a pearl of great price. Then, everything comes together and is put in proper order: our relationship with God, others, ourselves, and even the universe in which we live.

Words to Inspire the Faithful:
We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. ~Romans 8: 28

Year of the Eucharist:
“…we draw near to the Eucharist with the utmost reverence to render worship, adoration, thanksgiving and prayers of supplication to the One who alone is Lord! ‘The mode of Christ’s presence under the Eucharistic species is unique. Jesus Calls all of usIt raises the Eucharist above the Sacraments as ‘the perfection of the spiritual life and end to which all the Sacraments tend.’ (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 1374). In view of this transcendent truth, we come to understand that it is an extraordinary privilege for us to participate in the Eucharistic sacrifice, the resplendent manifestation and heart of our redemption in Christ.” (Taken from Bishop Salvatore R. Matano’s pastoral letter announcing a Year of the Eucharist in celebration of the 150 [Sesquicentennial] anniversary of the diocese. The full pastoral letter is available on the diocesan website.)

July 23, 2017 ~ Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Year of the Eucharist June 18, 2017 ~ June 3, 2018

16th Sunday Ordinary field Horiz

First Reading:
But though you are master of might, you judge with clemency, and with much lenience you govern us; for power, whenever you will, attends you. (Wis. 12:18)

Psalm:
Lord, you are good and forgiving. (Ps. 86)

Second Reading:
Brothers and sisters: The Spirit comes to the aid of our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes with inexpressible groanings. (Rom. 8:26)

Gospel:
“The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will collect out of his kingdom all who cause others to sin and all evildoers. They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father.” (Mt. 13:41-43a)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Today we are presented with the parable of the weeds and the wheat. We struggle with the imperfection that exists in our world. This imperfection shows itself in human sinfulness with its consequences–disease, natural disasters, suffering, and even death. We wonder why God did not simply make everything perfect right from the beginning so that harmony, peace, and tranquility would be the norm. God builds free will into us and into our world so that we can learn to freely love him. Anything less than this would not provide the freedom to choose to acknowledge and develop our relationship with our Creator. For now, the weeds and the wheat must coexist. Our faith teaches us that we live and walk in hope that when the harvest comes only the wheat of God’s love will remain.

Words to Inspire the Faithful:
“The word of God is a light to the mind and a fire to the will.” ~St. Lawrence of Brindisi

Year of the Eucharist:
“When we approach the Eucharistic celebration, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, we enter into an encounter with the Lord, like no other, and it demands our very best in prayer and participation. Among our people there is a deep Jesus Calls all of usappreciation for, and desire to renew a sense of the transcendent and awesome nature of the Most Holy Eucharist. The liturgical prayers of the Mass proclaim the doctrine, the truths of the creed which are the very foundation of our Catholic Faith. We do not create the Mass or own the sacraments; the Eucharist, the sacraments, are Jesus’s gift to His Church. Jesus is the one who instituted the Eucharist and now in time has shared this gift of Himself with us. St. John Chrysostom confirms this teaching: ‘It is not man that causes the things offered to become the Body and Blood of Christ, but He who was crucified for us, Christ Himself. The priest, in the role of Christ, pronounces these words, but their power and grace are God’s. This is my body, he says. This word transforms the things offered.’ ” (Taken from Bishop Salvatore R. Matano’s pastoral letter announcing a “Year of the Eucharist in celebration of the 150 [Sesquicentennial] anniversary of the diocese. The full pastoral letter is available on the diocesan website.)

The letter is available through a link on the Diocese of Rochester homepage website www.dor.org. The letter is also available in the foyer of our churches. In response to the Holy Father’s request, the diocese invites the young to respond to an online questionnaire at www.surveymonkey.com/r/TXNSXP5. Gardening Enthusiasts Needed:
St. James is in need of help with our Building and Grounds Committee and welcome all to join our group. The committee is especially interested in volunteers to help make the grounds beautiful. You don’t need to join the committee to help make the grounds lovely. Maybe you would enjoy taking a small area and designating it as your own to plant and garden as you wish. You could also get together with a few friends to plant your favorite flowers and bushes. If interested please contact Kathleen Rourke at  or Sandy Tielens at , co-chairs of the St. James Building and Grounds Committee. We look forward to hearing from you. We need you!

American Red Cross:
The Finger Lakes Chapter reaches from Steuben County up to the northern shores of Wayne County. They need many volunteers. Volunteers touch lives in the community every day and they are the heart and soul of the Red Cross. There are so many ways one can help. If you have any questions or if you would like further information please contact  or phone 607 936 2428.

Extra Vegetables and Fruit:
Don’t let your veggies grow up to be compost! Donate extra produce (vegetables, fruit, and eggs) from your garden or CSA share at 94 West Main Street Trumansburg every Monday 9:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m. until October 1. It will be distributed to a local family the next day. No donation is too small. For more information visit http://friendshipdonations.org/hubs/

It is a good way to stay informed of the issues and to quickly notify your legislators regarding issues that concern you. Another information link is the Catholic Charities USA website which offers a variety of helpful programs. See https://catholiccharitiesusa.org/advocacy-and-policy.

The Jacksonville Attic Thrift Shop:
A fresh supply of household item, camping supplies, books, craft supplies, and glassware cover the tables and fill the shelves. The clothing closet room holds an assortment of spring and summer clothes and toys just waiting for you and your family, including a large stock of next-to-new summer children’s clothing. Donations gladly received during business hours. They are open Tuesdays from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and on Saturdays 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The Attic Thrift Shop is located in the Old School House next to the Jacksonville Community United Methodist Church at 1869 Route 96 in Jacksonville.

Parish Feast Day Celebration:
In the Church’s calendar of feast days there is no date given for Mary, Mother of Mercy. Other churches having that name choose their own date to celebrate. After discussion with the Parish Council in early April and a brief discussion at the June meeting, the Worship Committee met on June 13 and recommended to Fr. Bernard that the second Sunday of September (this year September 10) be the day we celebrate our parish feast day. Suggestions have been made to have an outdoor Mass (weather permitting) at St. Fidelis Friary in early afternoon followed by our annual parish picnic at the boathouse.

Ministry Fair:
The Worship Committee has begun planning for a Ministry Fair for late September—the beginning of October. The Ministry Fair provides opportunities for parishioners to volunteer for Liturgical ministries and other areas of parish life depending on volunteers.

Sisters of St. Joseph of Rochester:
The sisters have a prayer ministry and throughout 2017, Sister Dolores Bachman and Sister Anne Marie Burns will be praying for our parish and parishioners. Let us keep the sisters in our prayers as an expression of gratitude. Sisters of St. Joseph website: www.ssjrochester.org.

Pregnancy Care Center of the Finger Lakes:
Pregnancy Care Center of the Finger Lakes, located at 551 Exchange St. in Geneva, is offering a “Forgiven and Set Free” post abortive ten-week session beginning October 4 until December 13. There is no cost involved. “If you regret your abortion, you are not alone. Let us help you learn to forgive yourself. This a program that provides free cancer screenings (breast, cervical, and colorectal) to women from ages 40–64 and men ages 50–64, who are uninsured or have health insurance that does not cover these screenings and who meet income eligibility requirements. July 16, 2017 ~ Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

15th Sunday Ordin.Vine horiz

Year of the Eucharist June 18, 2017 – June 3, 2018

First Reading:
My word shall not return to me void, but shall do my will, achieving the end for which I sent it. (Is. 55: 11b)

Psalm:
The seed that falls on good ground will yield a fruitful harvest. (Ps. 65)

Second Reading:
Brothers and sisters: I consider that the sufferings of this present time are as nothing compared with the glory to be revealed for us. (Rom. 8: 18)

Gospel:
“The seed sown among thorns is the one who hears the word, but then worldly anxiety and the lure of riches choke the word and it bears no fruit. But the seed sown on rich soil is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold.” (Mt. 13: 22-23)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
We are reminded today that the seed that falls on good ground will yield a fruitful harvest. What kind of soil do we have? God’s word needs to take root in our lives so that we can remain faithful not only when life is easy but when it gets challenging and difficult. Anxiety, worldly cares and concerns, personal challenges, experiences of loss and death, and even fear and disappointment can prevent us from trusting God’s promise. We can even find ourselves doubting God’s fidelity and lose touch with his presence. Our soil can easily become rocky, hard, and unyielding. Open your eyes and ears today and let all that is around you lead you to God’s presence. Then, do all in your power to cultivate and nurture a life that is eager to receive him and fertile for growing the seeds of God’s kingdom.

Words to Inspire the Faithful:
“I am not my own; I have given myself to Jesus. He must be my only love.” ~St. Kateri Tekakwitha

Cemeteries:
The cemetery committees of St. James the Apostle and Holy Cross are looking to increase their membership. There is a need for more people to become familiar with the cemeteries and their operation. It is an opportune time for new members because the Diocese of Rochester has initiated a wonderful new program for cemeteries. The more people we have that know the program the better off will be our parish cemeteries. Please phone the parish office to volunteer for membership on the committee.

Year of the Eucharist:
The following is taken from Bishop Matano’s pastoral letter announcing a “Year of the Eucharist” in celebration of the 150 (Sesquicentennial) anniversary of the diocese. “…Pope Francis instructs us: ‘The Eucharist is Jesus Himself who gives Himself entirely to us. Nourishing ourselves of Him and abiding in Him through Eucharistic Communion, if we do so with faith, transforms our life, transforms it into a gift to God and to our brothers and sisters. Nourishing ourselves of that Bread of Life means entering into harmony with the heart of Christ, assimilating His choices, His thoughts, His behaviors. It means entering into a dynamism of love and becoming people of peace, people of forgiveness, of reconciliation, of sharing in solidarity. The very things that Jesus did.’ (Pope Francis, Angelus Message, August 16, 2015).” The full pastoral letter is available on the diocesan website.

Feast Day of St. Francis Solanus:
This Sunday is the feast day of St. Francis Solanus. All are invited to a breakfast (eggs, sausage, bacon, etc.) after the 8:15 a.m. Mass. A free will offering will be accepted. Thank you to Kevin Barr, Charlotte Huyler, and Jennifer and Shane Sharp for preparing this event.

Young People:
Pope Francis has requested worldwide feedback concerning issues that will be addressed at the October 2018 Synod of Bishops on “Young People, Faith, and Vocational Discernment.” To prepare for next year’s Synod, Pope Francis has written a “Letter to Young People” (ages 16–29). Please encourage young people to take time to answer the questionnaire. One does not need to answer all the questions, just answer as many as possible based on one’s experiences. It is not a lengthy questionnaire.

Summer Religious Education:
The Word Committee announces that they are planning for the first summer religious education program this year running from August 7–11. A signup sheet will soon be online. Please save the dates and be on the lookout for the sign up link. If you have any questions you may contact Andy Morpurgo at ,or any of the religious education teachers.

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion:

 (forthcoming)

July 9, 2017 ~ Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

14 Sun.Ordinary JC Script

Year of the Eucharist June 18, 2017 – June 3, 2018

First Reading:
Thus says the LORD: Rejoice heartily, O daughter Zion, shout for joy, O daughter Jerusalem! See, your king shall come to you; a just savior is he, meek, and riding on an ass, on a colt, the foal of an ass. (Zec. 9: 9)

Psalm:
I will praise your name forever, my king and my God. (Ps. 145)
Or:
Alleluia.

Second Reading:
If the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, the one who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also, through his Spirit that dwells in you. (Rom. 8: 11)

Gospel:
“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.” (Mt. 11: 28–30)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Jesus tells us, “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.” These words may seem a bit contradictory at first given how hard it can often be to be a disciple and live as Jesus taught. While the Gospel can be difficult, it is never a burden. On another occasion Jesus says of his Father, “It is mercy I desire, not sacrifice.” God desires our hearts and when we give him our hearts we become free. We become free of ourselves and discover the joy that comes from serving God and others. We can easily get very rigid in terms of our faith, think that we know better, and place expectations on others that can be more of a burden than a source of new life. Are we willing to be open and learn from Jesus?

Words to Inspire the Faithful:
“In everything, whether it is a thing sensed or a thing known, God Himself is hidden within.” ~ St. Bonaventure

Funds from this collection help support reconstruction, education, formation, and poverty outreach. More information can be found at www.usccb.org/ccee. Thank you for your generosity.

“…The month after his election, Benedict XVI delivered a homily to conclude the twenty-fourth Italian National Eucharistic Congress on the Congress’ theme, Without Sunday, We Cannot Live, saying: ‘The Sunday precept is not, therefore, an externally imposed duty, a burden on our shoulders. On the contrary, taking part in the Mass, being nourished by the Eucharist and experiencing the communion of our brothers and sisters in Christ is a need for Christians, it is a joy. Christians can replenish the energy they need to continue on the journey we must make each week’…” The full pastoral letter is available on the diocesan website.

Maintenance Fund Envelope:
There will not be a second collection for the Maintenance Fund this month of July. The collection is normally taken up on the second weekend of the month. However, this month the Church in Eastern and Central Europe collection will be taken up on that weekend. Please deposit the Maintenance Fund envelope in the regular weekend collection.

The letter is available through a link on the Diocese of Rochester homepage website www.dor.org. The letter is also available in the foyer of our churches. In response to the Holy Father’s request, the diocese invites the young to respond to an online questionnaire at www.surverymonkey.com/r/TXNSXP5. Please encourage young people to take time to answer the questionnaire. One does not need to answer all the questions, just answer as many as possible based on one’s experiences. It is not a lengthy questionnaire.

July 2, 2017 ~ Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

13th Sunday Ordinary Time

First Reading:
So she said to her husband, “I know that Elisha is a holy man of God. Since he visits us often, let us arrange a little room on the roof and furnish it for him with a bed, table, chair, and lamp, so that when he comes to us he can stay there.” (2 Kgs. 4:9-10)

Psalm:
For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord. (Ps. 89)

Second Reading:
If, then, we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him. (Rom. 6:8)

Gospel:
“Whoever gives only a cup of cold water to one of these little ones to drink because the little one is a disciple–amen, I say to you, he will surely not lose his reward.” (Mt. 10:42)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
How does your commitment to Jesus Christ affect your life? Our faith is not just a private affair but something that influences all of our relationships. Our baptism brings us into a very intimate relationship with God and makes us a brother or a sister to all of God’s children. That identity we share colors how we relate to them and the level of responsibility we have to them. If we open ourselves to truly receive our God as Father and those with whom we journey as brothers and sisters, it can profoundly change and affect us. How has your baptism changed you?

Nourishing you faithful by this sacred mystery, you make them holy so that the human race, bounded by one world, may be enlightened by one faith and united by one bond of charity.” (Preface II of the Most Holy Eucharist). Great Links:
The New York State Catholic Conference has an excellent website at http://www.nyscatholic.org. It is a good way to stay informed of the issues and a great way for each to quickly notify your legislators regarding issues that concern you. Another good link is the Catholic Charities, USA offering a variety of helpful programs, https://catholiccharitiesusa.org/advocacy-and-policy.

The Parish of Mary, Mother of Mercy:
In the Church’s calendar of feast days there is no date given for Mary, Mother of Mercy. Other churches having that name choose their own date to celebrate. After discussion with the our Parish Council in early April and a brief discussion at the June meeting, the Worship Committee met on June 13 and recommended to Fr. Bernard that the second Sunday of September (this year that date is September 10) will be the day we celebrate our parish feast day. Suggestions have been made to have an outdoor Mass (weather permitting) at St. Fidelis Friary in early afternoon followed by our annual parish picnic at the boathouse.

Ministry Fair:
The Worship Committee has begun planning for a Ministry Fair for late September/the beginning of October. The Ministry Fair provides opportunities for parishioners to volunteer for liturgical ministries and other areas of parish life depending on volunteers.

Guidelines for the Reception of Holy Communion:
Please note that our Catholic Church has a discipline, namely, that Catholics cannot receive Communion in non-Catholic churches and non-Catholics cannot receive communion in Catholic churches. A summarized rationale is that there is no uniformity among the churches regarding the understanding of the Eucharist and that even though we may be one in our belief in Jesus, in reality we are divided as believers in Jesus. The Catholic Church’s discipline highlights the reminder and the need to continually work for oneness among Christians that is, that we all may be one in faith, life, and worship. Please communicate to Catholics and to non-Catholics requesting that they respect and follow the Catholic discipline. The guidelines can be found in the hymnal on page 231.

Bulletin for June 25, 2017 ~ Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time

A094OT12_nat_1_qtr_EN_4c

First Reading:
“Sing to the LORD, praise the LORD, for he has rescued the life of the poor from the power of the wicked!” (Jr. 20:13)

Psalm:
Lord, in your great love, answer me. (Ps. 69)

Second Reading:
But the gift is not like the transgression. For if by the transgression of the one the many died, how much more did the grace of God and the gracious gift of the one man Jesus Christ overflow for the many. (Rom. 5:15)

Gospel:
“Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father’s knowledge. Even all the hairs of your head are counted. So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” (Mt. 10:29-31)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Jesus tells us today, “Fear no one.” All of us have fears. Some of us may fear the future, change, rejection, being out of control, ridiculed, losing a cherished relationship, failure, and even sickness and death. We have no control over much that we fear. Anxiety and worry become a futile waste of time and serve only to impact the quality of life. Faith, which brings a trust in God’s promise that he is with us, allows us to face whatever comes with courage and acceptance. While very difficult to do, this is exactly what we are asked to do.

Year of the Eucharist:
Bishop Salvatore R. Matano, Bishop of Rochester, issued a pastoral letter announcing a “Year of the Eucharist” in celebration of the 150 (Sesquicentennial) anniversary of the diocese which will be celebrated on March 3, 2018 with solemn observances to begin in the Fall of this year, 2017. “It is my prayer and firm conviction that we make the Most Holy Eucharist, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, the heart and center of our Sesquicentennial Celebration. Indeed, this august sacrament, the real presence of Christ among us, has sustained us over these many years and has been the driving force of our diocese’s pastoral, apostolic, and charitable works… Therefore, with gratitude to God and in conjunction with our 150 anniversary, I am declaring the observance of a ‘Year of the Eucharist’ to commence on Sunday, June 18, 2017, the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, Corpus Christi, and to conclude on Sunday, June 3, 2018, on this same Solemnity.” The full pastoral letter is available on the diocesan website.

Fill the Bus School Supply Collection:
Beginning July 1 and ending the weekend of August 12 both Holy Cross and St. Francis Solanus Churches will be collecting school supplies for the “Fill the Bus” collection for Seneca County students. We are in need of glue sticks; pencils; blue and black pens; rulers; thick and thin magic markers; crayons; one subject spiral notebooks; composition books; loose leaf paper; 1, 1 ½, and 2 inch binders; tab dividers; two pocket folders; and pencil cases. All supplies will be collected at the Fayette Fire Department on August 16 and then taken to the four school districts in the county. We will need volunteers to help sort and box the collected supplies on August 16. If you’re able donate an hour or more of your time to help, it would be greatly appreciated as always. Please contact Gerald Frank 869-5009 or email:

The Month of May:
The Blessed Virgin Mary was honored in a special way during the month of May. We wish to thank all the parishioners who brought flowers to church on the weekends of May and at the beginning of Mass placed them at the statue of the Mary. It was very impressive and a reminder to us all of the devotion we have to the Mother of God. We also thank the parishioners who led the rosary, and the participants in the recitation of the Rosary, in church before the Masses on the weekend of May 14 in celebration of the 100 anniversary of the apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary to the three children (Lucia de Jesus Santos, and Francisco and Jacinto Marto) at Fatima, Portugal.

Camp Stella Maris:
Camp Stella Maris is located on Conesus Lake and has been in existence for ninety-one years. It remains committed to the original mission of creating a Christ-centered caring environment and camp experience that fosters spiritual, physical, and emotional growth for children, adults, families, and groups. For more information contact 585 346 2243 or visit www.campstellamaris.org.

Catholic Charities in New York State:
The hundredth anniversary of Catholic Charities in NY State was on April 24—a centennial of service to the poor, marginalized, downtrodden, and those left on the sidelines of society. A wonderful video has been produced illustrating the great work done by Catholic Charities throughout the state. More than just recounting of work accomplished, it also speaks to why we reach out to the poor and suffering and how that outreach continues to change and to adapt to the unique needs of every age of history. The brief video is available by going to www.nyscatholic.org/charities. Please take the time to watch this wonderful video.

Called to Care for Our Common Home:
“Education in environmental responsibility can encourage ways of acting which directly and significantly affect the world around us, such as avoiding the use of plastic and paper, reducing water consumption, separating refuse, cooking only what can reasonable per consumer, showing care for other living beings, using public transport or car-pooling, planting trees, turning off unnecessary lights, or any number of other practices. All of these reflect a generous and worthy creativity which brings out the best in human beings.” (Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si: On Care for Our Common Home) This Easter season, let the beauty of God’s love and mercy reinforce your commitment to care about the Earth and future generations. Choose to follow through with one of Pope Francis’s suggestions above.

Bulletin for June 18, 2017 ~ Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ

A167BodyBlood_nat_1_qtr_EN_4c

First Reading:
He therefore let you be afflicted with hunger, and then fed you with manna, a food unknown to you and your fathers, in order to show you that not by bread alone does one live, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of the LORD. (Dt. 8: 3)

Psalm:
Praise the Lord, Jerusalem. (Ps. 147)
or: Alleluia.

Second Reading:
Because the loaf of bread is one, we, though many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf. (1 Cor. 10: 17)

Gospel:
“I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world… For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him.” (Jn. 6: 51, 55–56)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Today is all about transformation. The bread and wine is transformed into the body and blood of Christ and we, by partaking in the Eucharist, are also transformed into the body and blood of Christ. St. Augustine issued a wise instruction regarding the Eucharist: “Become what you eat.” This is the real challenge of every Eucharistic celebration. Will we allow God to transform us into his Son so that the hope, love, healing, comfort, and mercy he embodies can be brought to our world through us? As Jesus feeds us, how can we feed others?

Words to Inspire the Faithful:
“This blood that but one drop of has the power to win all the world forgiveness of its world of sin.” ~St. Thomas Aquinas

Bulletin for June 11, 2017 ~ Solemnity of the Holy Trinity

First Reading:
Thus the LORD passed before him and cried out, “The LORD, the LORD, a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger and rich in kindness and fidelity.” (Ex. 34:6)

Psalm:
Glory and praise for ever! (Dn. 3)

Second Reading:
Brothers and sisters, rejoice. Mend your ways, encourage one another, agree with one another, live in peace, and the God of love and peace will be with you. (2 Cor. 13:11)

Gospel:
God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. (Jn. 3:16-17)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Today’s celebration of the Most Holy Trinity shows us how awesome and huge God really is! He is not a judgmental and aloof king reigning in heaven but a loving and compassionate God who is intimately involved with his children and all his creation. God as Father reveals the immensity of God’s presence as seen in the wonder of creation: the stars and seas, the mountains and hills, and all the glory that surrounds us. Jesus reveals the compassionate and gentle face of God, a God of mercy who desires nothing more than for his children to seek and come to him. God the Holy Spirit reminds us that God is the very life force of our existence, without whom we would have no breath and the universe would have no life.

Words to Inspire the Faithful:
“Among all things that are lovable, there is one that is more lovable than the rest, and that most lovable of all things is life.” ~St. Anthony of Padua

Fr. Solanus Casey, OFM Cap.:
Sixty years after his death, Capuchin Franciscan Solanus Casey will move a step closer to canonization as Pope Francis announced May 4 that the beloved friar, who earlier had been named venerable, met the requirements for beatification and will be named “blessed,” the second U.S. born man to achieve such a designation. Fr. Solanus ministered in New York for two decades (Sacred Heart Church, in Yonkers; Our Lady Queen of Angels, East Harlem; and St. Michael’s, Brooklyn) before his assignment to St. Bonaventure’s Friary / Church in Detroit in 1924 where he began working as the porter. He died in 1957. It was in that last role—which eventually became the title of a 1968 biography written by James Patrick Derum, The Porter of St. Bonaventure’s—which cemented his reputation for holiness and compassion. The date of Solanus Casey’s beatification is set for November 18, 2017 in Detroit, MI.

Healing Service:
On this Sunday, June 11 (corrected date), at 7:00 p.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church in Ithaca, Fr. Francis Pompeii, OFM will have a healing service. Whether or not you are in need of a healing, all are welcome.

Easter Duty:
According to Church law #920: “All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year. The precept must be fulfilled during the Easter season unless it is fulfilled for a just cause at some other time during the year.” In reference to this law the Easter Season is considered from the First Sunday of Lent until Trinity Sunday (this year June 11).

Clothing Closet Need:
Catholic Charities in Ithaca is recruiting volunteers for the busy Clothing Closet, which provides community members free clothing, shoes, blankets, sheets, and many more items. The Clothing Closet gets close to 20–30 visits per day and gives away around 2,000 free items per month! This service keeps elders dressed warmly in winter, provides kids with school clothes, and enables adults to find appropriate attire for interviews and work. Volunteers who can commit to three hours a week, enjoy helping others, and want to be a part of a strong community of kindness are asked to contact Michaela at 272-5062 ext. 10 or at . Volunteers are especially needed on Tuesday afternoons and Friday mornings right now, but volunteers for other weekdays are also welcome.
