Bulletin for June 4, 2017 ~ Pentecost Sunday

Pentecost_vib_Horiz

First reading:
And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. (Acts 2: 2–3)

Psalm:
Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth. (Ps. 104)
Or:
Alleluia.

Second reading:
There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. (1 Cor. 12: 4–6)

Gospel:
Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” (Jn. 20: 21–23)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
As we gather on this very beautiful feast of Pentecost we are reminded that God has not abandoned us but has left us the gift of the Holy Spirit as an advocate and guide. Negotiating our lives and living the Gospel can sometimes be difficult tasks. We are not always sure how to act or where to turn. We stand a better chance of obtaining greater clarity and focus and discerning what direction to take when we use the gifts of the Holy Spirit that we have been given.

Catholic Quotes—Words to Inspire the Faithful:
“The Church is like a great ship being pounded by the waves of life’s different stresses. Our duty is not to abandon ship but to keep her on her course.” ~St. Boniface

Checks should be made payable to the Province of St. Mary.

Fr. Solanus Casey, OFM Cap.:
Sixty years after his death, Capuchin Franciscan Solanus Casey will move a step closer to canonization as Pope Francis announced May 4 that the beloved friar, who earlier had been named venerable, met the requirements for beatification and will be named “blessed,” the second U.S. born man to achieve such a designation. Fr. Solanus ministered in New York for two decades (Sacred Heart Church, in Yonkers; Our Lady Queen of Angels, East Harlem; and St. Michael’s, Brooklyn) before his assignment to St. Bonaventure’s Friary / Church in Detroit in 1924 where he began working as the porter. He died in 1957. It was in that last role—which eventually became the title of a 1968 biography written by James Patrick Derum, The Porter of St. Bonaventure’s—which cemented his reputation for holiness and compassion. The date of Solanus Casey’s beatification is set for November 18, 2017 in Detroit, MI.

Catholic Communication Campaign:
Our second collection next weekend is for the Catholic Communication Campaign. This campaign connects people with Christ, here and around the world in developing countries, through the internet, television, radio, and print media. Fifty present of funds collected remains in our diocese to fund local communications efforts. Your support helps spread the gospel message! To learn more, visit www.usccb.org/ccc.

Monthly Maintenance Fund Collection:
During this month of June there will not be a second collection for the Maintenance Fund because the Catholic Communication Campaign Collection will be taken up on the weekend of June 11. Please deposit the monthly maintenance envelope in the regular weekend collection. Thank you for your support for maintenance of the parish’s buildings and grounds.

Easter Duty:
According to Church law #920: “All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year. The precept must be fulfilled during the Easter season unless it is fulfilled for a just cause at some other time during the year.” In reference to this law the Easter Season is considered from the First Sunday of Lent until Trinity Sunday (this year June 11).

St. James the Apostle Food Donations:
Food donations for the Food Bank may be brought to the church next weekend and placed on the table located in the front of the church. Monetary donations are accepted also.

Interlaken Olde Home Day:
Plan to join in the celebrations and events on Saturday June 10th. Food, crafts, displays, music and much more for the whole family beginning at 9:00 a.m.

Catholic Charities in N.Y. State:
The hundredth anniversary of Catholic Charities in NY State was on April 24—a centennial of service to the poor, marginalized, down-trodden, and those left on the sidelines of society. A wonderful video has been produced illustrating the great work done by Catholic Charities throughout the state. More than just recounting of work accomplished, it also speaks to why we reach out to the poor and suffering and how that outreach continues to change and to adapt to the unique needs of every age of history. The brief video is available by going to www.nyscatholic.org/charities. Please take the time to watch this wonderful video.

Guidelines for the Reception of Holy Communion:
Please note that our Catholic Church has a discipline, namely, that Catholics cannot receive Communion in non-Catholic churches and non-Catholics cannot receive communion in Catholic churches. A summarized rationale is that there is no uniformity among the churches regarding the understanding of the Eucharist and that even though we may be one in our belief in Jesus, in reality we are divided as believers in Jesus. The Catholic Church’s discipline highlights the reminder and the need to continually work for oneness among Christians that is, that we all may be one in faith, life, and worship. Please communicate to Catholics and to non-Catholics requesting that they respect and follow the Catholic discipline. The guidelines can be found in the hymnal on page 231.

Clothing Closet Need:
Catholic Charities in Ithaca is recruiting volunteers for the busy Clothing Closet, which provides community members free clothing, shoes, blankets, sheets, and many more items. The Clothing Closet gets close to 20–30 visits per day and gives away around 2,000 free items per month! This service keeps elders dressed warmly in winter, provides kids with school clothes, and enables adults to find appropriate attire for interviews and work. Volunteers who can commit to three hours a week, enjoy helping others, and want to be a part of a strong community of kindness are asked to contact Michaela at 272-5062 ext. 10 or at . Volunteers are especially needed on Tuesday afternoons and Friday mornings right now, but volunteers for other weekdays are also welcome.

Called to Care for our Common Home:
“Education in environmental responsibility can encourage ways of acting which directly and significantly affect the world around us, such as avoiding the use of plastic and paper, reducing water consumption, separating refuse, cooking only what can reasonable per consumer, showing care for other living beings, using public transport or car-pooling, planting trees, turning off unnecessary lights, or any number of other practices. All of these reflect a generous and worthy creativity which brings out the best in human beings.” (Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si: On Care for Our Common Home) This Easter season, let the beauty of God’s love and mercy reinforce your commitment to care about the Earth and future generations. Choose to follow through with one of Pope Francis’s suggestions above.

Sisters of St. Joseph Prayer Ministry:
The sisters have alerted us that throughout this year, 2017, Sister Anne Marie Burns and Sister Dolores Bachman are praying for our parishioners and parish. In appreciation for their thoughtfulness, kindness, and prayers, please keep them in your prayers. Sisters of St. Joseph website: www.ssjrochester.org.

Bulletin for May 28, 2017 ~ Seventh Sunday of Easter

7th Sunday East7_person horiz

First reading:
All these devoted themselves with one accord to prayer, together with some women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers. (Acts 1:14)

Psalm:
I believe that I shall see the good things of the Lord in the land of the living. (Ps 27)
OR
Alleluia.

Second reading:
But whoever is made to suffer as a Christian should not be ashamed but glorify God because of the name. (1 Pt 4:16)

Gospel:
Jesus raised his eyes to heaven and said, “Father, the hour has come. Give glory to your son, so that your son may glorify you, just as you gave him authority over all people, so that your son may give eternal life to all you gave him. Now this is eternal life, that they should know you, the only true God, and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ.” (Jn 17: 1-3)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
“Now this is eternal life, that they should know you, the only true God, and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ.” This is a very intimate promise given to us by God. We are meant to be eternally bonded with God in a way that fulfills us beyond our imagining. As suffering, death, resurrection, and ascension bring Christ to full stature so too does our suffering and death bring us to where we ultimately need to be as well. We are already on this eternal journey. All that we come to see and know about God and our relationship with him on earth is just a prelude of things to come. Knowing our destiny gives us the inspiration to use the gifts and talents God has given in service of that eternal goal. Are we ready to use our gifts for this purpose?

Catholic Quotes—Words to Inspire the Faithful:
“The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom should I fear?
The LORD is my life’s refuge; of whom should I be afraid?”
~Psalm 27:1

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion:

 (forthcoming)

Bulletin for May 21, 2017 ~ Sixth Sunday of Easter

First reading:
Now when the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent them Peter and John… Then they laid hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit.  (Acts 8:14, 17)

Psalm:
Let all the earth cry out to God with joy. (Ps. 66)
OR
Alleluia.

Second reading:
Beloved: Sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts. Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope. (1 Pt. 3:15)

Gospel:
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always, the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept, because it neither sees nor knows him. But you know him, because he remains with you, and will be in you.” (Jn. 14:15-17)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
St. Teresa of Calcutta once said, “Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier.” Keeping the commandments of Jesus ultimately means loving as he loves. How do you think people feel after they leave your presence? This is a question worth pondering if we are serious about being disciples. Gentleness and reverence are beautiful charisms to foster as they speak boldly of love. If we truly love God and our brothers and sisters, we will always be gentle with them and treat them with the reverent dignity they deserve, regardless of what they have done. This is the ultimate challenge of discipleship. Committing ourselves today to following Jesus’ commandments and to love as Jesus loves, how can we make those who meet us this week leave us happier and grateful that they have crossed our path?

Grants Available:
Groups working to address the root causes of poverty and powerlessness in Yates, Ontario, Seneca, and/or Cayuga counties are invited to apply for a Catholic Campaign for Human Development small grant. These grants are for projects benefiting and led by groups of low-income people working together to bring about positive social change. The focus can be on any of a variety of social justice issues aimed at rooting out poverty, such as access to health care, workplace justice, and affordable housing. Grants are not for projects doing direct social service or charity work but must aim to bring about institutional change. Application materials are available via Catholic Charities of the Finger Lakes by
contacting Deacon Gregory Kiley, , 315-789-2235, ext 124.

Poverty Simulation:
It is difficult for those of us who have enough to truly understand the situations that families living in poverty experience every day—the decisions they have to make and the fears and frustrations they feel. The Community Action Poverty Simulation provides participants with the opportunity to assume the role of a low-income family member living on a limited budget. One participant commented, “This poverty simulation dramatically demonstrates how much time and energy many families have to give just to survive from day to day. It quickly dispels the myth that people would do fine if they would only go out and get a job!” The “Poverty Simulation” will take place on Thursday, May 25, from 9:00–11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, 25 Center Street, Waterloo. Contact Tricia Kerr, for more information and registration.

Catholic Charities in NY State:
The hundredth anniversary of Catholic Charities in NY State was on April 24—a centennial of service to the poor, marginalized, down-trodden, and those left on the sidelines of society. A wonderful video has been produced illustrating the great work done by Catholic Charities throughout the state. More than just recounting of work accomplished, it also speaks to why we reach out to the poor and suffering and how that outreach continues to change and to adapt to the unique needs of every age of history. The brief video is available by going to www.nyscatholic.org/charities. Please take the time to watch this wonderful video.

2016-2017 Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA):
Thank you to everyone who has responded with a gift or pledge. We need all parishioners’ help to reach the given goal of $29,855. The May 5 update reported that our parish has pledged $28,845. We are presently $1,010 shy of our given goal. If you have not made a pledge, please do so as soon as possible. If our parish does not reach our given goal, the difference will be billed to the parish. Pledge envelopes are located in the vestibules of each church.

Bulletin for May 14, 2017 ~ Fifth Sunday of Easter

5th Sunday Easter Contemp

First reading:
So the Twelve called together the community of the disciples and said, “It is not right for us to neglect the word of God to serve at table. Brothers, select from among you seven reputable men, filled with the Spirit and wisdom, whom we shall appoint to this task.” (Acts 6:3-4)

Psalm:
Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you. (Ps. 33)
OR
Alleluia.

Second reading:
You are “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of his own, so that you may announce the praises” of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. (1 Pt. 2:9)

Gospel:
“In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If there were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may be.” (Jn. 14:2-3)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
“Let yourself be built into a spiritual house.” These words are found in today’s second reading. Are we willing to take up this challenge? Being built into a spiritual house means that I am willing to be shaped, constructed, stretched, changed, and designed. Growth involves many challenges and a lot of pain. It is not easy allowing my humanness to be transformed into the divine, and trusting God to do the work. Life’s issues can easily cause us to try to control the uncontrollable and to become overly anxious when confronted with life and death issues. Yet Jesus tells his followers, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me.” For those willing to be stretched and shaped into the spiritual dwelling they are meant to be, these words can be reassuring and lead to greater trust.

Bulletin for May 7, 2017 ~ Good Shepherd Sunday

Good Shepherd banner

First reading:
Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” (Acts 2:38)

Psalm:
The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want. (Ps. 23)
OR
Alleluia.

Second reading:
He himself bore our sins in his body upon the cross, so that, free from sin, we might live for righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. (1 Pt. 2:24)

Gospel:
“Whoever enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens it for him, and the sheep hear his voice, as the shepherd calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has driven out all his own, he walks ahead of them, and the sheep follow him, because they recognize his voice.” (Jn. 10:2-4)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Did you ever wonder why so many images of a shepherd show him with a sheep around his neck? When sheep wander, they need to learn who to follow. A good shepherd realizes that in order for the animal to do this, there must be a bond so tight that they then “smell” like each other and the sheep can recognize the scent. Jesus has us around his neck. He wants us to follow him; not just his teachings, but in the relationship with his Father. Jesus shows us, by his life, suffering, death, and resurrection what we ought to do to be fully human and live as children of God. By bonding with those most poor and vulnerable, Jesus calls us to do the same and desires to be our Good Shepherd. As you worship here today, keep in mind an image of Jesus carrying you around his neck. He wants you to recognize him so that you can follow, especially when we find ourselves wandering away.

My Immaculate Heart will be your refuge and the way that will lead you to God.” ~Our Lady of Fatima

On May 10 our parish will hold a Holy Hour for vocations. It will be held at the Parish Center in St. Francis Solanus Church from 7:00–8:00 p.m. Please make every attempt to come and pray for the needed vocations to religious life and the priesthood and to pray especially for priesthood and religious life vocations from our Parish of Mary, Mother of Mercy.

Bulletin for April 30, 2017 ~ Third Sunday of Easter

Third Sunday Easter Crocus

First Reading:
“God raised this Jesus; of this we are all witnesses. Exalted at the right hand of God, he received the promise of the Holy Spirit from the Father and poured him forth, as you see and hear.” (Acts 2:32-33)

Psalm:
Lord, you will show us the path of life. (Ps. 16)
OR
Alleluia.

Second Reading:
He was known before the foundation of the world but revealed in the final time for you, who through him believe in God who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God. (1 Pt. 1:20-21)

Gospel:
They set out at once and returned to Jerusalem where they found gathered together the eleven and those with them who were saying, “The Lord has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon!” Then the two recounted what had taken place on the way and how he was made known to them in the breaking of bread. (Lk. 24:33-35)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Does your celebration of the Eucharist ever transform you? Today we are presented with the story of what happened on the road to Emmaus. The disciples are simply journeying with Jesus, whom they do not recognize, talking about all that happened over the past days. They were quite bewildered as they did not know what to think about the empty tomb. Each year, we gather to celebrate the Resurrection and many of us wonder, what does it all mean? Jesus journeys with us every moment of our lives, yet we often do not recognize him. When we gather each week, the word of God, the homily that is preached, and the Eucharist that is received all help us lift the veil that often hides the wonder, power, and presence of God. Will you be open today to being taught, led, and transformed by Christ? He is walking with us, eager to open our eyes so that we can see.

Catholic Quotes—Words to Inspire the Faithful:
“To fast is to banquet with angels.” ~St. Athanasius

Bulletin for April 23, 2017 ~ Sunday of Divine Mercy

A043East2_contemp_1_qtr_EN_4c

Second Sunday of Easter ~ Sunday of Divine Mercy

First Reading:
Every day they devoted themselves to meeting together in the temple area and to breaking bread in their homes. (Acts 2:46)

Psalm:
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, his love is everlasting. (Ps. 118)
OR
Alleluia.

Second Reading:
Although you have not seen him you love him; even though you do not see him now yet believe in him, you rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy, as you attain the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls. (1 Pt. 1:8-9)

Gospel:
“Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe.” Thomas answered and said to him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.” (Jn. 20:27b-29)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Breathing is necessary for living. Without air and the ability to breathe, we would die. It is no wonder then that Jesus breathed on the disciples and gave them the Holy Spirit. As our physical breath is essential to physically live, the Holy Spirit is essential to personally and socially live. Jesus shows his friends that God is within them, sustaining them with his gifts and providing them with the fullness of life and love. We take God’s role in our lives for granted and we give ourselves more credit than we ought. Much of what we treasure and accomplish every day is due to God’s inner presence moving and acting within us calling us to new life.

Catholic Quotes—Words to Inspire the Faithful:
“To the servant of God … every place is the right place, and every time is the right time.” ~St. Catherine of Siena

Easter Duty:
(Church Law #920) “All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year. In reference to this law the Easter season is considered from the First Sunday of Lent until Trinity Sunday” (this year that is June 11).

Beginning Experience:
For those who have suffered a loss through divorce, death, or separation, “Beginning Experience” programs provide support. ”Healing Beginning Experience” weekend programs are offered in Spring and Fall. “Rebuilding” support programs are offered throughout the year. 2017 World Day of Prayer for Vocations:
May 7 is Good Shepherd Sunday. It is a day, throughout the world, when the Church encourages Catholics to continually pray for vocations to the religious life and priesthood. The encouragement is to: pray for the priests who have ministered to you throughout your life, both living and dead; to keep parish priests in your prayers; to encourage your children, grandchildren, or other young people to consider a vocation as a priest or religious brother or sister; and to pray a rosary for more young men and women to respond to God’s call. Recently the Vatican urged Catholics to “organize an invisible monastery” in which people, are committed to continuous prayer for priestly vocations. For more information about how to pledge to pray for vocations see their website: invisiblemonastery.com.

Earth Day in Ithaca:
On Saturday, April 29, while some are marching in Washington, D.C., for climate, jobs, and justice, there will be a joyful sister march celebration in Ithaca. Organized by Sustainable Tompkins with several co-sponsors plus partners including our Interfaith Climate Action Network, the event will start at 11:30 a.m. with the Fall Creek Marching Band leading the march from the Commons to the Space@GreenStar on Route 13, where exhibitors will inform us while speakers and musicians inspire us.

Life in a Refugee Camp:
Please join Catholic Charities and the Peace Pins Project on Tuesday, April 25, for a screening of the recent documentary After Spring. With the Syrian conflict now in its sixth year, millions of people continue to be displaced. After Spring is the story of what happens next. By following two refugee families in transition and aid workers fighting to keep the camp running, viewers will experience what it is like to live in Zaatari, the largest camp for Syrian refugees. Tickets are $10 and must be pre-ordered for the screening. Go to www.tugg.com/events/after-spring-qs5v or contact Catholic Charities at 272-5062 ext 12 or to order. The Clothing Closet gets close to 20–30 visits per day, and gives away around 2,000 free items per month! This service keeps elders dressed warmly in winter, provides kids with school clothes, and enables adults to find appropriate attire for interviews and work. Volunteers who can commit to 3 hours a week, enjoy helping others, and want to be a part of a strong community of kindness are asked to contact Michaela at 272-5062 ext. 10 or . Bulletin for April 16, 2017 ~ Easter Sunday

2016_EasterSunday_4c

First Reading:
To him all the prophets bear witness, that everyone who believes in him will receive forgiveness of sins through his name. (Acts 10:43)

Psalm:
This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad. (Ps 118)
OR
Alleluia.

Second Reading:
Brothers and sisters: If then you were raised with Christ, seek what is above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. (Col 3:1)
OR:
Clear out the old yeast, so that you may become a fresh batch of dough, inasmuch as you are unleavened. For our paschal lamb, Christ, has been sacrificed. (1 Cor. 5:7)

Gospel:
“Do not be afraid! I know that you are seeking Jesus the crucified. He is not here, for he has been raised just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples, ‘He has been raised from the dead, and he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him.’ Behold, I have told you.” (Mt 28:5b-7)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Alleluia, the Lord is risen! Mary of Magdala went to Jesus’s tomb and found that it was empty. She was the first witness of the Resurrection and announced the empty tomb to other disciples. We are called to be witnesses too. Can you imagine the joy the disciples experienced when they realized that Jesus was actually raised from the dead? Sometimes our faith in the Resurrection can run lukewarm. We don’t fully doubt that Jesus was raised but we aren’t fully convinced either. Once we become convinced our lives, no matter where our roads take us, will automatically radiate with joy. Like Mary, we are called to then share that joy with others so that they may realize that it is the Lord and come to believe.

Catholic Quotes—Words to Inspire the Faithful:
“Do not abandon yourselves to despair. We are the Easter people and hallelujah is our song.”
~St. John Paul II

Bulletin for April 9, 2017 ~ Palm Sunday

PalmSundaycontemp_Horiz4c

Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord

Processional:
“Hosanna to the Son of David; blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; hosanna in the highest.” And when he entered Jerusalem the whole city was shaken and asked, “Who is this?” And the crowds replied, “This is Jesus the prophet, from Nazareth in Galilee.” (Mt. 21:9-11)

First Reading:
The Lord GOD is my help, therefore I am not disgraced; I have set my face like flint, knowing that I shall not be put to shame. (Is. 50:7)

Psalm:
My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? (Ps. 22)

Second Reading:
He humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. (Phil. 2:8)

Gospel:
And they placed over his head the written charge against him: This is Jesus, the King of the Jews. (Mt. 27:37)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Our liturgy, with its very dramatic and poignant readings, immerses into all of the raw emotions life can often bring. We hear of betrayal, fear, anger, disappointment, confusion, suffering, and even death. The veil of injustice is pulled over the life of the innocent Lamb and God, who walked with us, is called to face his death on the cross. Yet Jesus remains faithful and accepts the fate that is before him. In all of this, he never wavers from the truth and continues to speak of mercy, forgiveness, and a God who loves. When life gets the best of us and brings us to our knees, can we remain faithful to the truth and accept what we cannot control?

“How could I bear a crown of gold when the Lord bears a crown of thorns? And bears it for me!” ~St. Elizabeth of Hungary

Lent:
Lent officially ends before evening prayer of Holy Thursday, April 13.

Easter Triduum—Three Days of Easter:
The Easter Triduum consists of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday. It begins with the evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday and ends with the conclusion of the evening prayer of Easter Sunday. These Easter days are most sacred to Catholics. To celebrate their holiness everyone is encouraged to be present and participate in the liturgies on each of these Easter days.

Holy Thursday—First Day of Easter:
On Holy Thursday this is only one Mass is permitted—the evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper. Mass may be permitted by the bishop in the morning but exclusively for those unable to participate in the evening Mass. The evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper will be at 7:00 p.m. at Holy Cross, Ovid.

Good Friday—Second Day of Easter:
The paschal fast is observed on Good Friday and continues until the Easter Vigil to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus and to prepare ourselves to share more deeply in His resurrection. The celebration of the Lord’s Passion will take place at 3:00 p.m. at St. Francis Solanus, Interlaken.

Holy Saturday and The Easter Vigil—Third Day of Easter:
The entire celebration of this vigil takes place at night, that is, after nightfall and end before the dawn of Sunday. This rule is to be taken according to its strictest sense. The Easter Vigil is not to be celebrated at the time of day that it is customary to celebrate anticipated Sunday Masses. The Easter Vigil will be celebrated at 7:30 p.m. at St. James the Apostle, Trumansburg.

Easter Sunday:
On Easter Sunday the times and places of the Masses follow the ordinary Sunday schedule, that is: 8:15 a.m. at St. Francis Solanus, Interlaken; 9:30 a.m. at Holy Cross, Ovid; and 11:00 a.m. at St. James the Apostle, Trumansburg.

Good Friday—A Day of Fast and Abstinence:
Fasting, for Catholics between the ages of 21 and 59, means that no food may be eaten between meals. Only one full meal a day is allowed. Two other small meals are allowed with the total amount of food not exceeding the full meal. Abstinence, for Catholics over the age of 14, means to abstain from eating meat.

Celebration of Easter Sacraments:
At the Easter Vigil Mr. James Landon will be celebrating the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. Ms. Amber Denman and Mr. Matthew Donovan will be making a profession in the Catholic Church and celebrating the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. What you are able to offer, know that it will be appreciated greatly.

Easter Duty:

Bulletin for April 2, 2017 ~ Fifth Sunday of Lent

5th Sunday Lent-Horz4c

First Reading:
I will put my spirit in you that you may live, and I will settle you upon your land; thus you shall know that I am the LORD. I have promised, and I will do it, says the LORD. (Ez. 37:14)

Psalm:
With the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption. (Ps. 130)

Second Reading:
If the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, the one who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also, through his Spirit dwelling in you. (Rom. 8:11)

Gospel:
Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” She said to him, “Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world.” (Jn. 11:25-27)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
As our season of Lent quickly draws to a close, we are reminded today that God’s creative and life giving presence is always at work, bringing light out of darkness and new life out of death. The prophet Ezekiel reminds us that God’s spirit is within us. Realizing this allows us to endure not only our eventual physical deaths but any difficulty, disappointment or crisis we may encounter. God’s desire to bring all things into loving union with him is eternal.

Words to Inspire the Faithful:
“Say to Jesus as the apostles did: ‘Lord, teach us to pray’.”  ~John Baptist de la Salle
