Bulletin for January 15, 2017 ~ Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

2nd Sunday in Ord.Time "Behold" horiz
Live The Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
It is important to know who we are and from where we come. Having a clear sense of identity allows us to make choices that further express and develop our ultimate purpose and goals. We are reminded today of Jesus’ unique identity as God’s Son and that by our baptism we are given the gift of sharing in that same intimate relationship with God. May knowledge of this make a difference in how we live our lives!

Bulletin for January 8, 2017 ~ Epiphany of the Lord

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:a020epiph_contemp_1_qtr_en_4c

Today’s feast of the Epiphany reminds us that Jesus came into the world for all, not just a select group of people. Into all nations a light has come and today we reflect on the wonderful gift Jesus gives us in light. If we journey with him, there is always hope and the darkness of confusion, ignorance, sin, and even death is dispelled. God is with us and knows every aspect of what it means to be truly human.

Public Policy Weekend—No Assisted Suicide in NY:
Legislation has been introduced in New York State that would authorize assisted suicide by allowing doctors to legally prescribe a deadly does of pills at the request of a patient with terminal diagnosis. Bulletin for January 1, 2017 ~ New Year’s Day

The Octave Day of the Nativity of the Lordjoytotheworld_rel_4c

Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
We seek the same faith and courage that Mary possessed as she accepted the tremendous responsibility of being the Mother of God. Life often requires great and heroic things of us and we often wonder how and if we are able to meet those challenges. Mary did not doubt that God was with her, giving her everything needed to complete the task before her. Because of her Son’s special relationship with his Father, we too can cry out “Abba, Father” and draw strength from the infinite and generous love God bestows upon us.

Bulletin for December 25, 2016 ~ Christmas Day

Live the Liturgy – Inspiration for the Week:
Merry Christmas! On Christmas Day is born our Savior, Christ the Lord! The Word, Jesus Christ, was with God from the beginning and brought life to the world. What an awesome thought! Jesus being born in time reminds all of us that our birth is not an accident. God uniquely created each one of us and gave us life out of love. He designed us with purpose and blessed each one of us with gifts and talents. Jesus, Emmanuel and Son of God, shows us who we are and who we are meant to become!

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
As we gather on this Fourth Sunday of Advent our anticipation for the coming of the Messiah heightens and intensifies. Our desire to connect with the source of who we are, God himself, takes on greater fervor. We anticipate the salvation Christ brings, which promises us a renewed spirit and freedom. We all long to be free. What binds us and prevents us from embracing what God desires to give? If we desire, we can taste this freedom now and then possess it fully when Christ comes!

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Today is Gaudete Sunday. Gaudete means “rejoice!” Our Scriptures provide us with wonderful images of healing, restoration, and justice. St. James reminds us to be patient as the coming of the Lord is at hand. But it is the prophet Isaiah who provides the encouragement we so desperately need. Our world and our country are in need of peace. We long for God’s justice, which does not bring retribution but equity. Isaiah shows us that if we walk with God all of these things can be ours, not only in the future but now.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
We are reminded today that the coming of the Messiah is intended to restore the innocence and trust originally experienced in the Garden of Eden. The Gospel message leads us to this vision. John the Baptist prepares us to receive the One who will preach this message only to suffer and die as a result of it. We are asked to repent and move away from where the world desires to lead us. We are called to the vision given us by our Savior. Hope allows us to persevere as we wait for what is to come.

Your Help is Solicited:
In order to ensure that the Catholic mission of word, worship, service (witness), and community (fellowship) continues in a vibrant way throughout the parishes in the eastern area of the diocese, parishioners are being asked to complete an online survey. The survey is sixty questions and will be used to help pastors, staff, and councils to identify priorities, areas for improvement, and areas where parishes can work together to increase ministry opportunities or training. The survey will be open until December 4, when reports will be compiled by the Diocesan Office of Pastoral Resources and Planning and sent to each Pastor to distribute. Thank you for taking the time to complete this survey, which is linked from our web page and also available at www.surveymonkey.com/r/EastDeaneryMinistryAssessment

Physician-assisted Suicide:
End of life issues can be difficult and easily misunderstood, so it is important for all of us to understand the proposal to legalize physician-assisted suicide in New York State. Our parish and our Diocesan Public Policy Committee invite you attend a presentation on this topic on Thursday, November 17, at 7 p.m. at Immaculate Conception parish hall. Stephanie Woodward, a young lawyer with the Disability Rights Center who is herself a disabled person, will explain what physician-assisted suicide is and why people with disabilities are opposed to it. Her organization and our Diocesan Life Issues office are teaming up to raise awareness about this issue and to encourage active opposition to the proposed legislation. Please come on November 17 and learn more, even, and especially, if you aren’t sure what you think about physician-assisted suicide.

Catholic-Lutheran Discussion / Bible Study Group:

Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy:2015 Year of Mercy logo
The origin of the Christian Jubilee goes back to Old Testament times. The Law of Moses prescribed a special year for the Jewish people to make restitution for wrongs committed, to forgive debts owed, and set slaves free. In the Roman Catholic tradition, a Holy Year or Jubilee is a great religious event, for the forgiveness of sins and the punishment due to sin. A Jubilee is a year of reconciliation between adversaries. It is a time of solidarity, hope, justice and commitment to serve God with joy and in peace with our brothers and sisters. The guiding principle of  the year: “Be merciful just as your Father is merciful.
