Religion Education:
Parents/guardians of school age children should have received a letter at the beginning of August announcing that classes will begin September 18. The letter also contained a registration form. Please return the registration form as soon as possible. Parents: please schedule and attend the parents/guardians meeting on Tuesday, September 6 at St. James the Apostle Church at 7:00 p.m.

Parish Choir:
The first rehearsal/meeting is this Tuesday, August 30, at the Parish Center, St. Francis Solanus, Interlaken, at 6:30 p.m. in the church. All Mary, Mother of Mercy parishioners, and others, are most welcome. Transportation will be provided for those in need. As a reminder, The Roman Catholic Church’s directive from the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) states under The Importance of Singing # 40: “Great importance should therefore be attached to the use of singing in the celebration of the Mass, with due consideration for the culture of peoples and abilities of each liturgical assembly. Although it is not always necessary (e.g., in weekday Masses ) to sing all the texts that are in principle meant to be sung, every care should be taken that singing by the ministers and the people not be absent in celebrations that occur on Sundays and on Holy Days of Obligation.”

5:00 p.m. Vigil Mass:
Parishioners have volunteered to be musicians and cantors at the Saturday evening vigil Mass. It is a hoped that they will be able to begin soon.

Marriage Annulments:
Pope Francis has simplified the process to determine the nullity of a marriage. There is a renewed emphasis on the primacy of the person and making the process more accessible to the person. Those seeking an annulment will now work closely with the parish minister in conjunction with the Diocesan Marriage Tribunal. Cases presented can be resolved within six months. There is now no fee (cost) for the process.

Making Contributions by Check:
The parish of Mary, Mother of Mercy, is yet to be civilly incorporated, therefore checks cannot be made out in that name. For the present time, please make checks out in the name of the church, that is, to St. James the Apostle, or St. Francis Solanus, or Holy Cross.

Gardening Around St James the Apostle Church:
A request is being made from the St. James Buildings and Grounds Committee for volunteers (individuals and/or families) to take on responsibility for one of the gardens around the church, that is, gardening required for: a) the Marian Shrine, or b) in front of the church; or c) in front of the rectory or d) on the back side of the Annex between the church and the rectory, or e) the back yard (church/rectory). This would be a great service project for students looking for service hours. Parishioners interested and able please phone the St. James Parish Office.

Any parishioners who would like to deepen their faith through a better understanding of Scripture are welcome to join an informal study of the Gospel According to Mark. The first session will start on Tuesday, September 13, 2016, after the 9 a.m. mass (St James the Apostle Church), and will be facilitated by Debbie Short and Camille Taranto. Anyone interested in Scripture study may just come the first session or any subsequent sessions.  The Liguori Catholic Bible Study for The Gospel According to Mark will be used as a supplemental text and will be provided for all participants. Don’t Let Your Veggies Grow Up To Be Compost:
Due to poverty, about 1 in 5 kids in our community might not eat a decent meal today. Elderly people and others are affected as well. Altogether, about 14% of our neighbors experience food insecurity. If you have extra produce (fruit, vegetables, and eggs) from your garden or CSA share, please drop it off in the cooler at 94 W. Community Lunch Program Annual Hoedown for Hunger:
Catholic Charities of the Finger Lakes Community lunch program’s Annual Hoedown for Hunger will take place on Wednesday, September 14, beginning at 5:00 p.m. at the Geneva on the Lake. The origin of the Christian Jubilee goes back to Old Testament times. The Law of Moses prescribed a special year for the Jewish people to make restitution for wrongs committed, to forgive debts owed, and set slaves free. In the Roman Catholic tradition, a Holy Year or Jubilee is a great religious event, for the forgiveness of sins and the punishment due to sin. A Jubilee is a year of reconciliation between adversaries. It is a time of solidarity, hope, justice and commitment to serve God with joy and in peace with our brothers and sisters. The guiding principle of  the year: “Be merciful just as your Father is merciful.”

Toiletries and Hygiene Products:
There is a basket in the vestibule of the church for donations of toiletries. The request comes from Catholic Charities which is in need of items like shampoo, toothpaste, diapers etc. The items will be transferred to the Catholic Charities Office in Ithaca.

Cancer Services Program (Cortland and Tompkins Counties):
This a program that provides free cancer screenings (breast, cervical, and colorectal) to women from ages 40–64 and men ages 50–64, who are uninsured or have health insurance that does not cover these screenings and who meet income eligibility requirements. These services are provided in local health centers, doctor’s offices, and hospitals. For more information call 1-866 442 2262.

The registration forms are needed to determine the number of children participating in the program and to help determine the need for teachers, the time, and place for the instructions. A parents/guardians meeting for Tuesday, September 6 at St. James the Apostle Church at 7:00 p.m. was also announced in the letter.

Music Ministry:
Those involved and those interested in the music ministry met on August 4 at the Parish Center. Among items discussed was the formation of a parish choir. All parishioners are welcome. The first meeting/rehearsal will be Wednesday, August 31 at 6:30–8:00 p.m. at the Parish Center. Rehearsals will be once a month and a tentative schedule has been suggested. Transportation will be provided for those in need. It was also concluded that the music ministers from the three churches would meet twice a year. An interest was expressed and work has begun to provide music at the Saturday 5:00 p.m. Vigil Mass. Fill The Bus—School Supplies Collection:
In conjunction with the United Way, we will be collecting school supplies from now until August 14 at Holy Cross and St. Francis Solanus Churches for the elementary students in Seneca County. The school supplies include crayons, pencils, color pencils, erasers, glue sticks, loose leaf paper, spiral notebooks, composition notebooks, blunted scissors, markers/highlighters, and pocket folders. Supplies can be brought to either church for collection until August 14.

Annual Missionary Cooperation Plan Appeal:
A representative of the Missionary Sisters of the Holy Rosary will be with us this weekend, August 6 and 7. The community was founded in Ireland in 1924 to work with women of Nigeria, West Africa. The Missionary Sisters of the Holy Rosary are now an international community working in nine countries of Africa, and in Brazil and Mexico. They are a strictly missionary group with no institutions in the United States or Canada, so therefore, rely almost exclusively on funds provided through the Society of the Propagation of the Faith and the generosity of the people back home to support their sisters on mission. Fill The Bus—School Supplies Collection:
In conjunction with the United Way, we will be collecting school supplies from now until August 14 at Holy Cross and St. Francis Solanus Churches for the elementary students in Seneca County. The school supplies include crayons, pencils, color pencils, erasers, glue sticks, loose leaf paper, spiral notebooks, composition notebooks, blunted scissors, markers/highlighters, and pocket folders. Supplies can be brought to either church for collection until August 14.

Don’t Let Your Veggies Grow Up to Be Compost:
Approximately 20% of children growing up in our area experience food insecurity. In other words, due to poverty, about 1 in 5 kids in our community might not eat a decent meal today. Elderly people and others are affected as well. Altogether, about 14% of our neighbors experience food insecurity. If you have extra produce (fruit, vegs and eggs) from your garden or CSA share, please drop it off in the cooler at 94 W. Main Street, Trumansburg on Mondays until October. Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy:
The origin of the Christian Jubilee goes back to Old Testament times. The Law of Moses prescribed a special year for the Jewish people to make restitution for wrongs committed, to forgive debts owed, and set slaves free. In the Roman Catholic tradition, a Holy Year or Jubilee is a great religious event, for the forgiveness of sins and the punishment due to sin. A Jubilee is a year of reconciliation between adversaries. It is a time of solidarity, hope, justice and commitment to serve God with joy and in peace with our brothers and sisters. Planning Team Update:
The planning team concluded its work with a shared dinner followed by a meeting on June 22. Most of the meeting was devoted to determining the location of a new parish office. Fr. Bernard has already shared the reasoning behind the choice of St. Francis Solanus. • The new pastoral council will now work with Fr. Bernard to set pastoral priorities and ensure good communication with parishioners. There will need to be attention given to creating events to bring people of the new parish together, to ensuring that people are warmly welcomed at Masses, and to continuing traditions of the three churches.

• Once the civil merger of the three parishes is complete, a shared finance council will be formed.

• Now it’s up to all of us to do our part to make Mary, Mother of Mercy a life-giving parish that attracts others to Jesus Christ by the way we treat one another and how we serve the needs of our larger community. With God’s help, we are up to the task!

Helpers Needed at St. James:
St. James church is in need of help in two areas that do not take a lot of time and have flexible schedules:
• Offertory Collection Counters – We currently have three counting teams that perform their counting activity either on Sunday (after the 10:30 a.m. Mass) or on Monday. The counting activity takes about one and a half hours depending on the size of the collection(s). We would like to increase the number of teams so that each team counts only once a month. Each team would consist of a minimum of two non-related individuals and would attend a training class to review the Diocesan/St. James counting procedures which takes about one hour.
• Parish Soft Data Base Entry – This activity consists of the computer data entry of all parish donations into a Diocesan mandated data base tool. This activity takes less than an hour and can be performed any time Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday morning. The diocese provides a user id and password along with a training class that takes about 45 minutes.

A thank-you from the Society for the Propagation of the Faith for the Diocese of Rochester was received for the $733.40 support of the Sisters of St. Joseph and the Sisters of Mercy missionary work in Brazil and Chile. The collection was taken up in the three churches on the weekend of May 15. Fr. Robert C. Bradler, Diocesan Director, wrote: “In the name of the dedicated sisters and myself, we thank you a hundred-fold for reaching out to the beautiful people of Brazil and Chile with your love and generosity.”

St. James the Apostle, St. Francis Solanus, and Holy Cross Churches Merged on July 1, 2016:
While the churches maintain their individual names, the name of the merged parish is Mary, Mother of Mercy. The title Mother of Mercy is thought to have been first given to Blessed Virgin Mary by St. Odo (d.942), Abbot of Cluny. It is a fitting title of Our Lady both because she brought forth for us Jesus, the Christ, the visible manifestation of the mercy of the invisible God, and because she is the spiritual mother of the faithful, full of grace and mercy. The title is also reflected in the pray Salve Regina – “Hail Holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope” and later in the prayer, “…turn, then, your eyes of mercy towards us ….”

In Regard to the Merger:
(1) If you make donations to the church by check, please continue to make the check out in the name of the church. The parish, with its new name has yet to be incorporated.

(2) Offertory envelopes: parishioners may use their offertory envelopes in any of the three merged churches. The offertory envelopes will be transferred to where the envelopes originated.

(3) The new parish office and reception area will be at St. Francis Solanus Church, Interlaken. Hopefully that will be completed by the end of August.

Approximately 20% of children growing up in our area experience food insecurity. In other words, due to poverty, about 1 in 5 kids in our community might not eat a decent meal today. Elderly people and others are affected as well. Altogether, about 14% of our neighbors experience food insecurity. If you have extra produce (fruit, vegs and eggs) from your garden or CSA share, please drop it off in the cooler at 94 W. Main Street, Trumansburg on Mondays until October. St. James church is in need of help in two areas that do not take a lot of time and have flexible schedules:
• Offertory Collection Counters – We currently have three counting teams that perform their counting activity either on Sunday (after the 10:30 a.m. Mass) or on Monday. The counting activity takes about one and a half hours depending on the size of the collection(s). We would like to increase the number of teams so that each team counts only once a month. Each team would consist of a minimum of two non-related individuals and would attend a training class to review the Diocesan/St. James counting procedures which takes about one hour.
• Parish Soft Data Base Entry – This activity consists of the computer data entry of all parish donations into a Diocesan mandated data base tool. This activity takes less than an hour and can be performed any time Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday morning. The diocese provides a user id and password along with a training class that takes about 45 minutes.

The origin of the Christian Jubilee goes back to Old Testament times. The Law of Moses prescribed a special year for the Jewish people to make restitution for wrongs committed, to forgive debts owed, and set slaves free. In the Roman Catholic tradition, a Holy Year or Jubilee is a great religious event, for the forgiveness of sins and the punishment due to sin. A Jubilee is a year of reconciliation between adversaries. It is a time of solidarity, hope, justice and commitment to serve God with joy and in peace with our brothers and sisters. The guiding principle of  the year: “Be merciful just as your Father is merciful.”

Cancer Services Program (Cortland and Tompkins Counties):
This a program that provides free cancer screenings (breast, cervical, and colorectal) to women from ages 40–64 and men ages 50–64, who are uninsured or have health insurance that does not cover these screenings and who meet income eligibility requirements. St. James the Apostle, St. Francis Solanus and Holy Cross Churches – Merged On July 1, 2016:
While the churches maintain their individual names, the name of the merged parish is Mary, Mother of Mercy. The title Mother of Mercy is thought to have been first given to Blessed Virgin Mary by St. Odo (d.942), Abbot of Cluny. It is a fitting title of Our Lady both because she brought forth for us Jesus, the Christ, the visible manifestation of the mercy of the invisible God, and because she is the spiritual mother of the faithful, full of grace and mercy. The title is also reflected in the pray Salve Regina – “Hail Holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope” and later in the prayer, “…turn, then, your eyes of mercy towards us ….”

In Regard to the Merger:
(1) If you make donations to the church by check, please continue to make the check out in the name of the church. The parish, with its new name has yet to be incorporated.

(2) Offertory envelopes: parishioners may use their offertory envelopes in any of the three merged churches. The offertory envelopes will be transferred to where the envelopes originated.

(3) The new parish office and reception area will be at St. Francis Solanus Church, Interlaken. Hopefully that will be completed by the end of August.

Merging of St. James the Apostle, St. Francis Solanus, and Holy Cross:

On that date the three churches, while maintaining their name, is now known as the parish of Mary, Mother of Mercy. On Friday, July 1, 2016, the churches of St. James the Apostle, St. Francis Solanus, and Holy Cross were united as one parish. In the eyes of the Church they are united but in the eyes of the civil authorities they are not united and therefore, they continue to be separate identities until the individual churches’ corporations have been dissolved and a new church corporation has been formed under the title of Mary, Mother of Mercy. This may take several months. In the meantime, parishioners who make contributions to the church by check are to continue to make the checks out in the name of the church not in the name of the newly formed parish. With the new weekend Mass schedule, parishioners may use their offertory envelopes in any of the three merged churches. The offertory envelopes will be transferred to where the envelopes originated

On Wednesday, June 22, the three parishes’ planning team met for the last time and concluded that the parish office will be located at St. Francis Solanus, Interlaken. The primary consideration focused on the extraordinary reconstruction cost of $30,000 to $45,000 if the parish office were to be located at St. James the Apostle or Holy Cross. The St. Francis Solanus location would entail only the cost of setting up an office without major construction costs. A second consideration was that St. Francis Solanus is centrally located between Holy Cross and St. James the Apostle. It is estimated that the moving of the two present parish offices into one new location can be completed by the end of August.

Cemeteries at St. James the Apostle and Holy Cross:
As of July 1, 2016, after comparative studies of other cemeteries, the cost of a burial plot (for body burial or cremains) is $650. The opening and closing of a grave for the coming year will be $650 for a body burial and $400 for cremains. St. James the Apostle Cemetery has a green burial section and the cost for the burial plot in that section is $950.

Cancer Services Program (Cortland and Tompkins Counties):
This a program that provides free cancer screenings (breast, cervical, and colorectal) to women from ages 40–64 and men ages 50–64, who are uninsured or have health insurance that does not cover these screenings and who meet income eligibility requirements. Merging of St. James the Apostle, St. Francis Solanus, and Holy Cross:
According to a decree issued by Bishop R. Matano, Bishop of Rochester, the merging of the three churches officially took place Friday, July 1, 2016. On that date the three churches, while maintaining their name, is now known as the parish of Mary, Mother of Mercy. The title Mother of Mercy is thought to have been first given to Blessed Virgin Mary by St. Odo (d.942), Abbot of Cluny. It is a fitting title of Our Lady both because she brought forth for us Jesus, the Christ, the visible manifestation of the mercy of the invisible God, and because she is the spiritual mother of the faithful, full of grace and mercy. The title is also reflected in the prayer Salve Regina – “Hail Holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope” and later in the prayer, “…turn, then, your eyes of mercy towards us, …”

On Friday, July 1, 2016, the churches of St. James the Apostle, St. Francis Solanus, and Holy Cross were united as one parish. In the eyes of the Church they are united but in the eyes of the civil authorities they are not united and therefore, they continue to be separate identities until the individual churches’ corporations have been dissolved and a new church corporation has been formed under the title of Mary, Mother of Mercy. This may take several months. In the meantime, parishioners who make contributions to the church by check are to continue to make the checks out in the name of the church not in the name of the newly formed parish. With the new weekend Mass schedule, parishioners may use their offertory envelopes in any of the three merged churches. The offertory envelopes will be transferred to where the envelopes originated

On Wednesday, June 22, the three parishes’ planning team met for the last time and concluded that the parish office will be located at St. Francis Solanus, Interlaken. The primary consideration focused on the extraordinary reconstruction cost of $30,000 to $45,000 if the parish office were to be located at St. James the Apostle or Holy Cross. The St. Francis Solanus location would entail only the cost of setting up an office without major construction costs. A second consideration was that St. Francis Solanus is centrally located between Holy Cross and St. James the Apostle. It is estimated that the moving of the two present parish offices into one new location can be completed by the end of August.

Cemeteries at St. James the Apostle and Holy Cross:
As of July 1, 2016, after comparative studies of other cemeteries, the cost of a burial plot (for body burial or cremains) is $650. The opening and closing of a grave for the coming year will be $650 for a body burial and $400 for cremains. St. James the Apostle Cemetery has a green burial section and the cost for the burial plot in that section is $950.

Pre-Cana Couples:
Pre-Cana was held at St. James the Apostle on May 28. Three engaged couples were present: Nicholas Stam and Kathryn Latanshyn, Kyle Leubner and Jenna Fronce, and Dwight Herforth and Sara Wood. The Pre-Cana team has requested the parish to keep them in prayer in preparation for their October weddings. The parish is in debt to Dave and Ellen Moore (HC church) who have been part of the Pre-Cana team for more than 10 years and who are retiring from this ministry. We pray that God bless Dave and Ellen and reward them many times over for their generosity and the valuable help given to engaged couples preparing to celebrate the sacrament of marriage.

St James the Apostle Church Parking Lot:
The Building and Grounds Committee at St. James is studying the repair of the parking lot. At this time it would be advantageous to know a person who is familiar with parking lot design. If you know of such a person please phone the parish office. Thank you.

The Papal Flag and the American Flag:
At St. James, the parish has had in its possession both of these flags, no doubt to be placed in the church, which is customary and traditional for Catholic churches to display them. The flags have been moved into the church. It will take time to establish the permanent location for these flags. Don’t be surprised to see them moved periodically.

Helpers Needed at St. James:
St. James church is in need of help in two areas that do not take a lot of time and have flexible schedules:
• Offertory Collection Counters – We currently have three counting teams that perform their counting activity either on Sunday (after the 10:30 a.m. Mass) or on Monday. The counting activity takes about one and a half hours depending on the size of the collection(s). We would like to increase the number of teams so that each team counts only once a month. Each team would consist of a minimum of two non-related individuals and would attend a training class to review the Diocesan/St. James counting procedures which takes about one hour.
• Parish Soft Data Base Entry – This activity consists of the computer data entry of all parish donations into a Diocesan mandated data base tool. This activity takes less than an hour and can be performed any time Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday morning. The diocese provides a user id and password along with a training class that takes about 45 minutes.

Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy:
The origin of the Christian Jubilee goes back to Old Testament times. The Law of Moses prescribed a special year for the Jewish people to make restitution for wrongs committed, to forgive debts owed, and set slaves free. In the Roman Catholic tradition, a Holy Year or Jubilee is a great religious event, for the forgiveness of sins and the punishment due to sin. A Jubilee is a year of reconciliation between adversaries. It is a time of solidarity, hope, justice and commitment to serve God with joy and in peace with our brothers and sisters. The guiding principle of  the year: “Be merciful just as your Father is merciful.”

Peter’s Pence Collection, Be a Witness of Charity:
This week, our diocese will take up the Peter’s Pence Collection, which provides Pope Francis with the funds he needs to carry out his charitable works around the world. The proceeds benefit our brothers and sisters on the margins of society, including victims of war oppression, and disasters. Join our Holy Father as a witness of charity to those who are suffering.

Offertory Envelopes:
