Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Alleluia! Forgiveness has risen from the grave! What a wonderful joy fills us today as we ponder the inexhaustible mercy of God. When experienced, we are moved to do all in our power to avoid sin and embrace the loving presence of our risen God. God stands ever ready to receive us and wants nothing more than for us to come home. How reluctant we are to believe this truth! We want proof, tangible evidence and absolute assurance that what we have been told is true. Jesus has risen from the dead and brings us peace. It is the gift of wholeness and holiness that is breathed upon us by God’s life-giving and healing mercy. May the rays of love that flow from the heart of Christ pierce ours!

The Appeal will conclude in eight weeks. Our given Appeal parish goal is $29,979. As of April 1, one hundred and thirteen parish households have pledged $28,601 which represents 95.40% of goal. We need $1,378 to reach our goal. Participation in the Appeal is primary, what is pledged is secondary. Please do what you are able. To make your gift please use the CMA pledge envelopes located in the foyers of the church or go online to www.dor.org/cma. Thank you for considering this request.

Easter Duty:
“All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year. The precept must be fulfilled during the Easter season unless it is fulfilled for a just cause at some other time during the year.” (Church law #920) In reference to this precept the Easter season is considered the First Sunday of Lent until Trinity Sunday (this year May 30).

Second Sunday of Easter:
This Sunday, April 11, is the Second Sunday of Easter also known as the Sunday of Divine Mercy. This day is a reminder to always celebrate that God’s love conquers all adversity.

Divine Mercy Service:
This Sunday, April 11 at 3:00 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, 113 N. Geneva Street, Ithaca, Deacon George Kozak will be leading a Divine Mercy Service with recitation of the Divine Mercy Chaplet, the Rosary and Adoration and Benediction. All are welcome.

Thank You:
The parish expresses heartful “thanks” to all who made the Easter Triduum most beautiful. Our gratitude is to all those who worked on decorating our churches with flowers, and symbols of the resurrection etc. Each parish church had a festive welcome. (Parishioners who contributed to the cost of flowers – again – thank you.) We thank our sacristans, greeters of hospitality, altar servers, lectors, musicians and singers, and, of course, all who came to the Easter Triduum liturgies. It is a sure sign of hope that all who have been vaccinated are returning to church. It was so good to see parishioners who have been kept away due to the virus. God bless you all for making this Easter a joyous one

The Sacrament of Confirmation:
Four of our parishioners will be celebrating the Sacrament of Confirmation this Saturday, April 10 at 1:00 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, Ithaca. Bishop Salvatore R. Matano will be officiating. Those being confirmed are: Adam Arco, Allyson Marion, Annabelle Tingue, and Leah Wiggins. We rejoice in their being fully initiated into the Church. Like all followers of Jesus, we pray they will continue do their part in promoting the teachings of Jesus and the Kingdom of God.

The Easter Sacraments:
Fr. Bernard will give a presentation on the Sacraments of Initiation (also referred to as the Easter Sacraments) on three consecutive Tuesday evenings at the Parish Center, Interlaken, beginning at 7:00 p.m: — Baptism, April 27; Confirmation, May 4; and Eucharist, May 11. The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be included with the presentation on Baptism. All are welcome.

First Communions:
Three parishioners will celebrate their first communion on Sunday, May 2, at the 9:00 a.m. Mass at St. James the Apostle Church. They are: Christopher Clarke-Cabezas, Grace Guydosh and Porter Landon.

Souper Bowl of Caring:
A “Thank you!” was received at the parish from the Souper Bowl of Caring Staff for $400 collected at Holy Cross Church, Ovid and given to the Ovid Food Pantry. “Once again, thank you so much for participating this year! No matter how large or small your collection was, you are helping to make giant plays in the fight against hunger. Please know that with your help over $3,872,534 has been raised for charities across the country!”

National Blue Sunday:
The last Sunday of April is a day of prayer for abused children. Blue Sunday is a national faith-based movement when churches take time to pray for victims of child abuse and for those who rescue them. This year it will be April 25, 2021. There are over 3 million confirmed cases of child abuse in our nation annually and 1640 child deaths from child abuse (most were under the age of three).

“Lord, when did we see You… in prison?” Matthew 25:39:
We might ask ourselves how often our own outreach concerns extend to our incarcerated brothers and sisters and their families. America’s rate of incarceration is greater than any other nation in the world: although our country has 5% of the world’s population, it has 25% of is prisoners. Sentence length and time served are much longer in the US than elsewhere, and include more solitary confinement, less rehabilitations, and poor re-entry assistance.  A crime data expert at the Brennan Center for Justice recently observed, “It is really a system that sets people up for failure.” (America, August 2020). As we continue to struggle with our own confinements during the pandemic, let us deepen our understanding of the sufferings of our incarcerated sisters and brother and pray to know how we can best care for them. In the coming weeks of this Easter Season, our Diocesan Public Policy Committee will be providing further information and assistance to parishes in these efforts.

Year of St. Joseph:
Pope Francis initiated the Year of St. Joseph in recognition of the 150th Anniversary of the declaration of St. Joseph as patron of the Catholic Church. This year is dedicated to increase our love for this great saint, to encourage us to implore his intercession and to imitate his virtues and his zeal.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Alleluia! Christ is risen! About today’s feast, St. Augustine writes: “And he departed from our sight that we might return to our hearts and find him there. For he left us, and behold, he is here.” Christ’s resurrected presence lives not only in the highest heaven but in the fragile human heart. Christ’s life inspires us and moves us to see a future for every human being and discover our true purpose and meaning. Every human being has a desire to live, and this cry can be heard within. There is a longing for a connection with Someone greater than ourselves that gives an import to our existence that we cannot supply. Today, our deepest questions find answers.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
What an ironic twist of events! Jesus is hailed with palm branches as he comes down a street one minute and faces agonizing suffering and death on a cross the next. Does any of this make any sense? They shouted, “hosanna to our King,” out of one side of their mouths and, “crucify him,” out of the other. At first glance it seems like such hypocrisy. Yet, when we step back there may be more truth to the story than we care to admit. We struggle with Jesus. We hail him in our churches but struggle to figure out what to do with him on our streets. We are fine when we hear pious renderings of his messages and preaching but wince when it gets to the part about changing the way we conduct business and becoming more sensitive to the disadvantaged, poor and marginalized. We invoke God’s name when we want victory and keep silence when it comes to global solidarity. We talk out of both sides of our mouths too, looking only to what works or suits us at the time and leaving the rest. There exists in each one of us a person who hails our King with hosannas and a person who is all too willing to choose Jesus over Barabbas for the cross. Something to think about this Holy Week!

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
How do we convince people that God’s law is written upon their hearts? God is wedded to God’s people. This is a simple and fundamental fact of life. Yet, many ignore this truth and carry on as if they, or humanity as a whole, are the center of the universe. As a grain of wheat has to fall to the ground and die in order to become what it really is, we too must die to our secular images and ideas of ourselves so that we can become who God really made us to be. If all of us kept our focus on God’s deep bonded love with human beings, indeed with our very self, then there would be no need to teach others this fundamental life lesson. They would simply know this truth, as Jeremiah tells us. Somehow, perhaps through original and personal sin, we have lost sight of this reality. We have lost our way and our axis. It is time to find our way back, to learn the virtue of obedience, to pay attention to what God is saying and become aware of the Divine Love that is the reason for all creation. Then, even in our darkest hour when all may seem to be lost, we can say as did Jesus, the model of obedience, “Father, glorify your name,” By this perseverance, people can come to know the Lord and what God has done.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
God’s messengers always seem to get mocked. They speak a truth that some folks do not want to hear. While on the one hand we admire them, we also are quite happy keeping them at a distance. After all, they are not referring to me but someone else, aren’t they? We often wrongly conclude that because we may be more avant-garde, contemporary, politically sensitive, and untraditional, we are somehow more in the light than others. People tend to prefer darkness more than light, even the most spiritually sensitive among us. The light always carries with it the richness of God’s mercy and compassion which see beyond ideologies and concepts to relationships that cultivate life, earthly and eternal. Every hand of compassion and mercy extended to a human being must always point back to God. The call always involves ordering our lives in accord with our truth and essence of being. As God never forgets us, we must never forget God. Now is the time to take stock of our infidelity and return to the light, even though it is difficult to look at.

March 19:
The feast day of St. Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is this Friday. It is a special day this year because this year has been dedicated to St. Joseph – the Year of St. Joseph, December 8, 2020 – December 8, 2021. It is also special day this year because the Apostolic Penitentiary grants a plenary indulgence to the faithful who will recite any legitimately approved prayer or act of piety in honor of St. Joseph especially on March 19. On Friday, at the conclusion of the 8:30 a.m. Mass, the Litany to St. Joseph will be prayed for the persecuted Church, and for the relief of all Christians suffering all forms of persecution. The plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful under the usual conditions of sacramental confession, Eucharistic Communion, and prayer for the Pope’s intentions.

Problem Gambling Awareness Month 2021:
According to the National Council on Problem Gambling, 2 million U.S. adults (1%) are estimated to meet criteria for severe gambling problems in a given year. Another 4-6 million (2-3%) would be considered to have mild or moderate gambling problems. It’s been estimated that 8-10 additional people can be negatively affected by one person’s gambling behaviors (Petry 2005). These people include family members, friends, neighbors and even coworkers. If we account for individuals experiencing gambling problems and others who are affected, the estimate of those affected by problem gambling is between 64 and 80 million people. If you or someone you love is struggling, please visit NYProblemGamblingHelp.org to connect with resources in your community.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
With our world in such constant turmoil and conflict, it makes such good sense to return to the simple directives given in the Ten Commandments. God’s unassuming guidelines provide the perfect recipe for ordering our relationships with God, others, and even ourselves. But yet, we are so quick to glance beyond them and even remove them from public view because we foolishly believe we can create something better. Arrogance runs far deeper in the members of our society than we can ever imagine. Lent is a perfect time to call ourselves back to our foundations and the basic relationships that comprise our lives. It is also a time to remember that Jesus is the true sign of God’s presence. Everything he says and does, including his suffering and death, is a sign of the God who sent him. The anger we witness when Jesus exhorts those in the temple to stop making his Father’s house a marketplace can equally be seen in his anger and frustration over humanity’s constant mission to turn God’s creation into a secular world. We have a lot of work to do for sure.

Rice Bowls:
Drought has become a big problem across El Salvador, making it difficult for farmers to produce enough crops to support their families, and sadly, El Salvador has lost 75% of its rich land because of the large number of trees that have been cut down and harmful agricultural practices, making it one of the most food-insecure countries in the hemisphere. New farming techniques and a new generation of young farmers are making a difference. Thanks to the Catholic Relief Services (CRS) school program, Raíces Ahuachapán, young farmers learned how to grow vegetables at home—knowledge that was extremely important during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the days of the confinement, nearly 1,200 families started home vegetable gardens to grow nutritious foods like onions, tomatoes, cucumbers and squash.  They can eat what they harvest or sell the produce for additional income. CRS Rice Bowl alms help this happen. Please continue to donate to your rice bowl throughout Lent. They are available in the foyers of the churches. Visit crsricebowl.org to learn more.

This announcement comes on the 150th anniversary of Blessed Pope Pius IX’s December 8, 1870 proclamation of St. Joseph as Patron of the Universal Church. Pope Francis made this declaration to increase our love for this great saint, to encourage us to implore his intercession and to imitate his virtues and his zeal. During this period, the faithful will have the opportunity to obtain, with the help of St. Joseph, comfort and relief from the serious human and social tribulations that besiege the contemporary world today.

Churches Will Be Closed on Weekdays:
Due to the recent rise of COVID-19 cases, our parish churches of Holy Cross, Ovid and St. James the Apostle, Trumansburg will be open only for the weekend Masses. St. Francis Solanus Church, Interlaken, the Church and Parish Office, will remain open.

COVID-19 Rental Assistance Program:
This program is designed to provide up to three months of rent relief to eligible households who have experienced a loss of income related to the public health crisis. To learn more or apply, visit ithacanhs.org/rentalassistance or phone 607–277–4500. Assistance is available to renters in four counties including Seneca, Schuyler, Tioga, and Tompkins.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
How is your Lent going so far? In changing the circumstances and order of our lives a bit, perhaps we can hear God’s voice more clearly and drink more deeply of graced moments we experience. Having God as a friend always involves several things. First, there is God’s call. We become attuned to the echo of God’s voice in the depth of our souls calling and beckoning us to listen. Second, there is a request. We begin to see that God asks us to do certain things, to order our lives a particular way, and become more intentional in the choices we make. Third, there is trust. Do we trust this call and request? Trust commits us to the relationship and makes a claim on who we are. Finally, we are asked to act. We find ourselves acting, not in the way we used to, but in a transformed, more enlightened way. Things seem clearer and all that is around us shines with the brilliance of God’s presence. God’s call came through a cloud, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him,” This is the call and the request. Can we give God our trust and do as God asks?

February 21, 2021 ~ First Sunday of Lent / Year of St. Joseph

First Reading:
I will establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all bodily creatures be destroyed by the waters of a flood; there shall not be another flood to devastate the earth. (Gn. 9:11)

Psalm:
Your ways, O Lord, are love and truth to those who keep your covenant. (Ps. 25)

Second Reading:
Christ suffered for sins once, the righteous for the sake of the unrighteous, that he might lead you to God. (1 Pt. 3:18)

Gospel:
The Spirit drove Jesus out into the desert, and he remained in the desert for 40 days, tempted by Satan. (Mk. 1:12-13)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Throughout history God has given His people signs. Our season of Lent offers us God’s sign that it is time to stop the ordinary routines of our lives, create some desert space, and listen more attentively for God to reveal His presence. We are asked to unplug from our attachments, compulsions, obsessions, addictions, routines, and busyness to clear the slate and take stock in who we have become. We are asked to remember the ancient sign of God’s covenant with humanity in which He vowed to nurture, sustain, and protect the relationship He has with His people. Once we slow down a bit and clear away some of the clutter, we can see how the journey of our life is unfolding. We can see what brings us in and out of tune with God’s love and how we can better imitate God’s loving fidelity in our relationship with Him. Even though some good solid self-denial is the order of the day, greater happiness and wholeness will be the fruit of our labors. Pleasant journey through the desert!

Thank You:
The parish of Mary, Mother of Mercy, was well represented at the Trumansburg food pantry in January and February. There were a number of people from our parish who showed up, making light work with many hands. Our community is fortunate in that many of our parishioners will continue throughout the year, providing a solid base of volunteers that help to make the pantry a success. As St. Teresa of Calcutta said: “Good works are links that form a chain of love.” On behalf of our neighbors, thank you for your generosity of time and effort!

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Everybody has a place at the table, and nobody deserves to feel inferior, unworthy, unwanted, or marginalized. It is not part of God’s vision. Jesus came to heal, make things whole, set things right, and restore relationships. No one is to feel unwelcome or alienated from the community. Whether we like it or not, this message is at the core of the Gospel. It makes a lot of sense when you think about it. Perhaps this is why people kept coming from everywhere to listen to Jesus speak and to be in his presence. He made perfect sense. Most of us have no issue buying into this vision. We run into trouble, however, when we fall into the trap of privilege and power. We diverge from God’s vision when the powerful begin to control who is entitled to wholeness and inclusion, and greed becomes a driving force. Prejudice and entitlement have no place in the kingdom of God, and even the most needy and hurting among us are worthy of the compassion Jesus desires to offer. There are no easy solutions to the world’s dilemmas. But one thing is for certain, no one can be singled out, excluded or mistreated. Everyone matters.

Ash Wednesday – Vatican Directives:
The Vatican Congregation for Divine Worship has modified the distribution of ashes on Ash Wednesday (February 17) during this time of the pandemic. It is as follows: the priest, after blessing the ashes and sprinkling them with holy water, addresses those present, reciting once the formula found in the Roman Missal: “Repent, and believe in the Gospel” or “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” The priest then cleanses his hands, puts on a face mask, and distributes ashes to those who come to him or, if appropriate, he goes to those who are standing in their places. He then sprinkles the ashes on each person’s head without saying anything. Therefore, this year there will be no marking the forehead with ashes.

Ash Wednesday is an obligatory day of fast and abstinence. Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence, i.e. meatless days.

Abstinence prohibits individuals from eating meat on a particular day. Abstinence obliges all those who have reached the age of 14 and continues to oblige throughout ones entire life.

Fasting requires that only one full meal be taken per day. Two other smaller meals may be taken during the day to maintain physical strength, but these two meals together should not equal a full meal in quantity. Fasting obliges all those who have reached the age of 18 and continues to oblige until age 59. Those not specifically obliged to fast are encouraged to join in the discipline of fasting to the extent that they are able.

Offertory Collection:
During this time of the pandemic, offertory collections cannot be taken up. When parishioners attend Mass, please place your offertory in the new collection stand at the entrances of the church. The new stand replaces the baskets at the entrances and offers security to your offering.

The Bishop’s Reminder:
Due to the prevalence of the Coronavirus, the obligation to attend Sunday Mass is suspended until further notice. Those who are at a higher risk of COVID-19 and those concerned for their health are urged not to come to church for Mass. Those who feel in any way sick should not enter any parish building or church.

Year of St. Joseph:
On December 8, 2020, His Holiness, Pope Francis, declared a Year of St. Joseph, until December 8, 2021.

Snow Days:
A reminder that during the week, if a “snow day” has been declared for local schools, there will be no 8:30 a.m. morning Mass.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Have you ever wondered what life would be like if you could see the future and know how things turn out? While it’s intriguing to ponder what life would be like if we possessed this knowledge, actually knowing could easily rob us of the thrill, adventure, and soul-searching graces of our journey. Like Job, life does not always leave us on a happy note. Life experience can bring us face-to-face with our mortality and leave us with a profound sense of helplessness. We do not see the wholeness and fulfillment that will one day come and cannot grasp the certainty that a resolution to our plight will come our way. We need to learn how to reach for Jesus’ hand and let him help us to our feet. Living a life of faith means realizing that we are not here to figure out life on our own. In order to drink deeply of what life presents us, we have to wrestle in the depths of our souls, agonize and search, possibly reach the lowest point of desperation, and cry out for the Divine healing we need to restore our faith, hope, and love. It is no wonder that those who are touched by God’s healing power want to then serve others and show them the deeper waters that can be explored. Knowing too much can rob us of joyful surprises.
