Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Most of us are not trail blazers. Throughout history though, there have been many folks who tirelessly and persistently pursued the promptings of their hearts without giving any care to what others thought or trends dictated. Jesus is one of them. St. Teresa of Calcutta and St. Francis of Assisi are examples of others. The rest of us are people who take a more measured look at things, want to test the waters, and take our time choosing what path or person to follow. We need credible witnesses of faith. We need the Moses people in our lives to show us by word and deed who God is and what integrity and a purpose-driven life looks like. They are the pointers to truth, who even though they struggle themselves, seem to embody an unspoken timeless wisdom that just sounds and feels right. Jesus taught with this same type of authority and caught the attention of the greatest of skeptics. They were astonished. Even though we need our human prophets we can also be somewhat prophetic ourselves by putting integrity and conviction behind our embrace of the Gospel. Perhaps much to our surprise, we all have the power to be a credible witness. Are you willing to give it a try?

Funeral:
Eugene Carroll age 87 died on January 16, 2021. A funeral Mass was celebrated at Holy Cross Church, Ovid on January 21 with burial at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Please Note:
Fr. Bernard will be away from January 27 to March 2, 2021. Fr. Richard Crawley, OFM Cap. and Fr. Roland Daigle, OFM Cap. will be covering the schedule of weekday and weekend Masses. They will also fill in whenever called upon. The Friday evening schedule for confessions/dialogue will be cancelled during that time.

2020/2021 Catholic Ministries Appeal:

Blessing of Throats:
On the feast day of St. Blaise, February 3, it is the custom in the church to bless throats with crossed candles with the following prayer, “Through the intercession of St. Blaise, Bishop and Martyr, may God deliver you from every disease of the throat and from every other illness: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” This year, because of the pandemic, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Committee on Divine Worship issued the following directive: the priest/deacon will give the blessing to all assembled by extending hands, without crossed candles, over the people while saying the prayer of blessing. The blessing will take place at the parish daily 8:30 a.m. Mass on Wednesday, February 3.

The Word Among Us:
The season of Lent begins on February 17 Booklets containing daily meditations and daily Mass Sacred Scripture readings for February 17 – April 4, 2021 are available in the foyers of the church. Please take one for yourself and your family and please bring a booklet to one who is homebound. A free will offering may be offered for the booklet.

Offertory Collection:
During this time of the pandemic, offertory collections cannot be taken up. When parishioners attend Mass, please place your offertory in the new collection stand at the entrances of the church. The new stand replaces the baskets at the entrances and offers security to your offering.

Public Policy Advocacy Weekend – February 13/14:
NOURISH NEW YORK is a New York State initiative that provides funding to Food Banks to purchase New York State produced farm products. This accomplishes two goals: it offers market support to farmers, the fishing community, and food processors who have been impacted by the economic effects of the pandemic, while getting high-quality food to individuals and families across the state through the regional Food Banks to local parish and community food pantries. The initiative provided $35 million in funding from May 1 to December 31, 2020. 4,152 farms have provided over 17 million pounds of high-quality New York produced food to New Yorkers in-need.

Treaty – Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons:
January 22, 2020 marked the day when the United Nations’ Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons came into force. This accord was approved by 122 members of the U.N. General Assembly in 2017 and has just recently been ratified by the legislature of the 50th member country, so it will now become international law. The treaty declares that the countries ratifying it must “never under any circumstance develop, test, produce, manufacture or otherwise acquire, possess or stockpile nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices.” The United States did not participate in the ratification of the treaty.

Trumansburg Food Pantry Volunteers:

Faith Formation:
A great help to parents and families is “The Family Zone” newsletter. It offers a listing of activities and opportunities for further learning one’s faith. The newsletter can easily be shared to encourage the promotion of parents as primary catechist. The newsletter is easy to follow, offers several topics in various formats, it is fun and most of all it is educational. The newsletter is for all in the family, young and elderly. Respect Life:

Year of St. Joseph:
On December 8, 2020, His Holiness, Pope Francis, declared a Year of St. Joseph, until December 8, 2021. This announcement comes on the 150th anniversary of Blessed Pope Pius IX’s December 8, 1870 proclamation of St. Joseph as Patron of the Universal Church. Pope Francis made this declaration to increase our love for this great saint, to encourage us to implore his intercession and to imitate his virtues and his zeal. During this period, the faithful will have the opportunity to obtain, with the help of St. Joseph, comfort and relief from the serious human and social tribulations that besiege the contemporary world today.

Snow Days:
A reminder that during the week, if a “snow day” has been declared for local schools, there will be no 8:30 a.m. morning Mass.

Churches Will Be Closed on Weekdays:
Due to the recent rise of COVID-19 cases, our parish churches of Holy Cross, Ovid and St. James the Apostle, Trumansburg will be open only for the weekend Masses. St. Francis Solanus Church, Interlaken, the Church and Parish Office, will remain open.

COVID-19 Rental Assistance Program:
This program is designed to provide up to three months of rent relief to eligible households who have experienced a loss of income related to the public health crisis. When God saw by their actions how they turned from their evil way, he repented of the evil that he had threatened to do to them; he did not carry it out. (Jon. 3:10)

The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel. (Mk. 1:15)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
“Repent, and believe in the gospel.” Some type of honest and sincere repentance is necessary for any type of authentic growth and maturity. We have to come to the realization, unless we are happy wallowing in immaturity and superficiality, that the way we have been doing things is not the best or the healthiest. There isn’t a human being alive who hasn’t acted foolishly or erratically at the cost of almost losing a treasured relationship. “Why did I act that way?” is a question we often ponder after some reflection and enlightenment. Faith works the same way. Stumbling through life and bumping up against meaninglessness, a person can begin to see that something significant is missing. They see that there is merit to a relationship with God and an embrace of faith. Before these can take root, sincere sorrow for past wrong doing, missed opportunities, errors in judgment, and short sightedness is necessary. Repentance is necessary. Then having realized that we were walking in darkness, we can rejoice that by God’s grace we now see the light.

Pope Francis has designated the Third Sunday In Ordinary Time (this year January 24) as The Sunday of the Word of God to be held every year. Public Policy Advocacy Weekend – February 13/14:
The COVID-19 pandemic has hit everyone hard. In particular, the pandemic has focused a spotlight on two vulnerable groups in New York State: farmers and our neighbors who are food insecure – may are newly hungry due to job losses caused by the pandemic. The Diocesan Public Policy Committee invites us to join in helping both on Diocesan Public Policy Advocacy Weekend (February 13/14) by calling on state leaders to allocate $50 million to continue the NOURISH NEW YORK initiative during state fiscal year 2021-2022.

Capuchin Franciscan Burses:
The purpose of the Capuchin Franciscan Burse is to fund the recruitment, education, training, preparation, and mission work of friars in the Province of St. Mary of the Capuchin Order. A “Burse” is opened in memory of a deceased person, in honor of a saint, or in the name of any person or organization. One hundred dollars opens a new Burse. Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
We have often heard it said that God is always calling but we are not always listening. It is not only that we are not listening, but that we are not familiar enough with God to even recognize that it is God who is calling! We can easily mistake God’s voice for someone or something else and miss some profound opportunities for connection. We have to train our minds, hearts, and souls to specifically listen for the voice of God. It is a voice that draws us to deeper places, leading us to moments of grace and more profound God awareness. To look at Jesus and be able to say, “Behold, the Lamb of God,” means that I know something special about this person whom others know as simply a man. I will become more attentive and receptive when he says, “Come, and you will see.” I may even be more willing to set aside what I am doing and actually go.

A funeral Mass was celebrated for Beverly Lucy Morley on January 8, 2021 at St. James the Apostle Church. Beverly died on January 1, 2021. She was 80 years old.

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity:
This Monday, January 18, begins the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity that concludes on Monday, January 25 the feast day of The Conversion of St. Paul, the Apostle. This custom began at the end of the Vatican II Ecumenical Council, in the late 1960’s. The week of prayer goal is to enable Christians of different denominations to grow in an understanding of one another and work together promoting the knowledge of Jesus and the good news, the gospel of Jesus.

Day of Prayer:
This Friday, January 22, is the Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children.

January 10, 2021~ The Baptism of the Lord / Year of St. Joseph

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
We carry a greater depth of self-confidence and chance of succeeding when we have affirmation, a sense of direction and clear purpose in life. Each of these serve to provide our lives with meaning, allowing us to clearly establish priorities and goals. They also are necessary for integrity, which is the conviction and single mindedness that keeps us grounded in the truth of who we are. “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” Jesus’ baptism provides him with exactly what he needs to get about the business of his mission as the Son of God. He is given what he needs to be successful in fulfilling the purpose for which he was sent. Our baptisms give us these same gifts. We receive the affirmation we need from God, knowing that we are one of his beloved daughters and sons. We are gifted with the direction and clear purpose we need in order to be productive stewards and faithful Christians. Are we ready and willing to answer the call?

The Universal Liturgical Norms state: “Besides the times of the year that have their own distinctive character, (e.g. Advent, Lent, Easter) there remains in the yearly cycle thirty-three or thirty-four weeks in which no particular aspect of the mystery of Christ is celebrated, but rather the mystery of Christ itself is honored in its fullness, especially on Sundays.” Ordinary Time continues through Tuesday, February 16, the day before Ash Wednesday and the beginning of the Lenten season. It will resume when the Easter season ends, that is, on Monday May 24, the day following Pentecost.

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity:
The week begins on Monday, January 18, and concludes on Monday, January 25, the feast day of The Conversion of St. Paul, the Apostle. This custom began at the end of the Vatican II Ecumenical Council in the late 1960s. The week of prayer goal is to enable Christians of different denominations to grow in an understanding of one another and work together promoting the knowledge of Jesus and the good news, the gospel of Jesus.

Card Ministry at Mary, Mother of Mercy:
The Card Ministry program sends cards and notes to the homebound and those in extended care facilities from our parish. Each month a different volunteer sends out a message of our care and hope for the recipients of the cards. Currently we are seeking additional volunteers to keep the mailings to once a month. Year of St. Joseph:
On December 8, 2020, His Holiness, Pope Francis, declared a Year of St. Joseph, until December 8, 2021. This announcement comes on the 150th anniversary of Blessed Pope Pius IX’s December 8, 1870 proclamation of St. Joseph as Patron of the Universal Church. Pope Francis made this declaration to increase our love for this great saint, to encourage us to implore his intercession and to imitate his virtues and his zeal. During this period, the faithful will have the opportunity to obtain, with the help of St. Joseph, comfort and relief from the serious human and social tribulations that besiege the contemporary world today.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Even the slightest flicker of a light helps to properly orient us when we find ourselves in total darkness. Being in darkness can be unsettling and even a bit unnerving. We lose our focus and struggle to find our bearings and achieve balance. On life’s journey we may think we are walking in the light but are really lingering in darkness. We do not see the full picture, either because we are distracted, disinterested, or even apprehensive. Sometimes, we even choose to close our eyes when the light is readily available to illuminate our path. Do we really desire to know the truth of who we are? In Jesus Christ, a light has been given to those who dwell in darkness. God’s revelation gives us the light to see where we come from, who we are and where we are going. It also tells us that this Good News is not meant for just a privileged few but is intended to go out to all the world. Is this something we want to see?

2020 Food Pantry Volunteers Needed:
Every two months the churches of Trumansburg and Jacksonville take turns providing volunteers for the Trumansburg Food Pantry located in the Trumansburg United Methodist church. January and February are the months this year for Mary Mother of Mercy to provide volunteers. Please consider helping by signing up on the list provided in St. James the Apostle church foyer, which also has a chart providing more details about each task. We especially need younger people to help carry boxes and bags up and down stairs. The dates are January 4 and 18 and February 1 and 15. Don’t forget to leave your phone number if you would like a reminder call. The Sisters of St. Joseph of Rochester:

U.S. Saints Feast Days:
Monday, January 4, is St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Day. She was raised Episcopalian in New York City; a wife and mother of five children; foundress (1812) of the first congregation for women religious in USA — the Sisters of Charity, devoted primarily to the education of the poor and the teaching in parochial schools; and first native born citizen canonized (1975). She died in 1821.

Tuesday, January 5, is St. John Neumann Day. He was a missionary from Bohemia; a member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (C.Ss.R); bishop of Philadelphia; known for his holiness and learning; promoter of parochial schools; authored two German catechisms; and first American bishop canonized (1977). Call to Stop Executions:
In the wake of more federal executions scheduled in coming weeks, two bishop chairmen have issued a statement calling on the Federal Administration to act as a witness to the dignity of all human life. Archbishop Paul S. Coakley, chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development, and Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann of Kansas City in Kansas, chairman of the USCCB’s Committee on Pro-Life Activities, have called on the Administration, yet again, to stop executions which amounted to ten in 2020, more than double the previous record of four in 1938. “The death penalty is not necessary to protect society. It (the death penalty) is not necessary to hold people accountable for grave crimes. The decision not to execute someone, even someone who has done something terrible, is not ‘soft on crime’; rather, it is strong on the dignity of life.” “We are all sinners. Some have done terrible things. Victims need help. Justice is needed for peace. But executions solve nothing.”

While families come in all shapes and sizes and no two are the same, they all need a common focus and grounding. Families are intended to be pivotal in providing us with a proper social structure and understanding, a support system, lessons about relationships and communication and the unconditional acceptance and love we so desperately crave. In additional to all of these things, the axis of every family has to be centered on faith. It is here that we can learn about the virtues and discover the windows to God Himself in His gifts of faith, hope, and love. We can learn, modeling our experience after the Holy Family, how to use these as anchors in our lives so that we can live out the other virtues with greater integrity. Because our human families struggle with weakness and sin, we have to come back to the Holy Family often for inspiration and guidance. Does the world realize that it is waiting? As we go about all of the busyness of our lives and entertain our distractions, there are many holes and gaps in our lives that need to be filled. We are always wanting more, but not really sure what that “more” needs to be. Fulfillment, happiness, contentment, and true satisfactions are fleeting occurrences and often come to us in illusive ways. What we think is the ultimate fix to our anxious emptiness really is only a fancy trend that we entertain. The world does not realize any more today than it did over two thousand years ago that it is waiting for a Savior. We need a Savior. We need to see and embrace the God who has broken into history and become one with us. It is this union of God and man that sets us on a straight path, orders our relationships, establishes proper focus and goals, and tells us whose kingdom we really are meant to serve. Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
What gives you joy? Joy is discovered when we connect with something or someone very deeply and experience a dimension of ourselves that material or secular possessions cannot bring. Joy is stumbled upon when we see our newly born child for the first time, get caught up in the vastness of a mountain landscape, and are led out into infinity gazing at an ocean’s horizon, or being lovingly present with someone when they are vulnerable and in need. Joy is a profound experience that in its uniqueness grounds us in ultimate truth. Did you know that all authentic, profound, and memorable moments of joy mirror the eternal joy we desire from God? We can have glimpses of this eternal Divine joy as we embark upon our earthly journey, mirrored in our human connections with joy, but experienced directly during moments of deep prayer. Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Prepare the way of the Lord! The message of John the Baptist becomes the calling of every baptized disciple of Jesus Christ. Each one of us is asked to prepare the way of the Lord. Given the humble means of our lives, how can we do this? It certainly does not require that we stand on street corners announcing God’s future coming! We can more readily take up the task of our lifework by clearing our lives of unnecessary, distracting clutter. By creating solid and deep spiritual lives, we can heighten our awareness of God’s presence and help people point to and discover God’s presence around them. By conducting ourselves in holiness and devotion, we can speak volumes to those we meet. Not by preaching actual words, but by living lives that communicate the comfort God wants His people to know. As the world sometimes frantically unfolds around us, we can be people of patience who show others that it’s okay to wait for God’s gift to come. Conducting our lives in this manner, we will know the peace that comes from doing what we have been asked to do.

Tuesday – Holy Day:
December 8 is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is the patronal feast day of the United States. It is a holy day of obligation, however, this year due to the pandemic the obligation to attend Mass is suspended. Nevertheless, our parish will have two Masses:

9:00 a.m. at St. James the Apostle, and
6:00 p.m. at Holy Cross.

2020/2021 Catholic Ministries Appeal:

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Be watchful! Be alert! The core message of Advent cannot be more direct or simple. As those who are postured in a spirit of readiness and anticipation, we must always be attentive and vigilant. We have to be ready not only for the anticipated arrival of our Lord, but watchful and attentive to the unexpected visit as well. While we know that the Christ is coming, we also do not know the exact time. Cultivating this expectant attitude is the purpose of this season. It is easy to grow slack, inattentive, and too self-assured. We can easily deaden ourselves to the wonder and surprise of God’s presence. We get so absorbed in so many other distractions that it can seem like Christ’s second coming, and even Christ’s coming in time are of lesser importance. When it finally dawns on us that we have wandered far away from where we need to be, and lost our attentiveness and focus, we will wonder how this all happened. We may even try to put the onus on God and blame God for a lack of involvement or presence. We are the ones, who through our own choice, put the distance in our relationship and lost touch. Now it’s time to come back and perk ourselves up a bit!

Angel Tree Tags:
There will be no Angel Tree tags this year. Due to the pandemic, the Community Christmas Project Committee will provide gift cards to children instead of physical gifts. The cut-off date for donations is November 30. Donations received after November 30 will be applied to next year. It is projected that 800 children will be recipients of this year’s drive. Sundays:
Sundays are great days. They are holy days rooted in the third commandment of God, “Keep holy the Sabbath day.” During this pandemic time, many rightly do not gather in church. Therefore, we try to keep the day holy by taking time in our own homes to reflect on the word of God and pray in praise of God and petition. To help in this regard there is “The Family Zone Newsletter.” It is a wonderful way to help keep Sundays holy.
