The flesh is our old self of yesterday and the one we left behind in baptism. It is the self of doubts and fears, sin and error, reluctance, untamed passion, and errors in judgment. It is also the self of missed opportunities and roads untraveled. Although we were baptized many years ago, every day is another day to live, not according to the flesh of yesterday with its regrets and misgivings, but rather to live the life of the spirit of today and tomorrow. The burdens of our personal baggage and of life itself can weigh us down. The love of Jesus Christ and the life of the spirit can pick us up, refresh us, and provide us with the hope for new opportunities and discoveries. Because we have been baptized in Christ, we need not be anxious about what we did or did not do yesterday or anxious about what will come tomorrow. Parish Feast Days:
Our three parish churches have feast days on the following dates:

• July 16 for St. Francis Solanus,
• July 25 for St. James the Apostle, and
• September 14 for Holy Cross (the Exultation of the Holy Cross).

Because there is no Church calendar date for Mary, Mother of Mercy, the parish has chosen to celebrate our parish feast day on the second Sunday of September. This year it is September 13. Presently and sadly, unlike former years, because of the ban on social gatherings there are no plans for celebrating the parish churches’ feast days or the parish feast day.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
“Are you unaware that we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?” What do you understand these words to mean? Many see these words as an indication of what may come in eternal life. In actuality, they have more to do with our lives here and now. We are called to die to ourselves and offer our lives as gifts given generously to others. It is not about us. We are asked to serve God and not continue in our service of sin. Life is about learning to do what we really do not want to do because it brings us deeper into the mystery of God, ourselves, and others. Learning how to accept and live with the “small deaths” and sacrifices we encounter teaches us how to live with and approach our final death. We can do so with a heart that has been touched by and is open to mercy or one that is self- focused and closed.

Weekend Mass Limitations:
Recent civic directives state that churches may allow only a limited number of people at any one time in each of our churches. This weekend we are allowed to have 80 people in Holy Cross, 35 in St. Francis Solanus, and 54 in St. James the Apostle. Those attending are to adhere to the civil directives, namely, sanitize one’s hands upon entering the church, wear a face mask covering your nose and mouth, stay six feet from one another, and exit the church from back pews to front pews. Households may sit together.

Peter’s Pence Collection:
The Peter’s Pence collection was originally scheduled for this weekend, June 28, but has been postponed. The national collection date will now be the weekend of October 3–4, 2020.

Bishop Thanks You:
Bishop Matano has written a letter to the pastor and devoted parishioners, expressing his sincere gratitude for the parish exceeding their assigned goal for the 2019–2020 Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA). “Your commitment to supporting the mission of our Diocese, to love God above all things, and to serve our neighbors in need, for the love of Him, is deeply encouraging. Appeal Comes to a Close:
The Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA) reports are now showing the final numbers for the 2019–2020 CMA campaign. More than 22,000 generous donors contributed $6.1 million to this year’s CMA, representing nearly 90.8% of the $6.725 million diocesan goal. Thirty-seven parishes reached their assigned goals. Congratulations to all. We are genuinely humbled and amazed by the generosity of CMA donors who continued to give during one of the most challenging times our generation has experienced.

Second Collection Next Weekend:
The annual collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe is scheduled for next weekend, July 5. This collection supports the Church in more than 20 countries that still struggle to recover from Communist rule. Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Jesus knows that the challenges a disciple of the Gospel will face in the world are real. He tells all of us point blank, “Do not be afraid.” There are many things we can fear as we attempt to live the Gospel: unpopularity, being rebuked, rejection, anger, being challenged, having to defend ourselves, standing alone, insecurity, failure, and even death. Many folks know that their faith calls them to live life more deliberately and radically but are cowards when it comes to putting it into practice. We easily justify sticking with the “acceptable” norms with which we are accustomed. These only serve to keep us stuck and mired in mediocrity. The Gospel—given flesh by the very presence of Christ—seeks to stretch, challenge, and change us. We do not have to fear anything, even death. Sometimes, living with our fears brings us a sadly disordered sense of comfort. Maybe what we really fear above all else is change.

Directives for Gathering for Mass:

• There is to be no social congregating before or after Mass. This includes congregating in the church, vestibule, narthex, on the steps of the church, or in the church parking lot.
• People are required to wear a cloth covering their nose and mouth. If you forget your facemask, the church will provide one.
• People need to sanitize their hands at the entrance of the church before entering the building.
• People are to sit six feet away from others in all directions (families of the same household may sit together).
• All hymnals, prayer cards, and other paper resources are removed from the pews.
• Cry rooms and other ancillary areas in the church are closed and locked.
• Holy water fonts are empty.
• The “Book of Intentions” has been removed.
• Congregational singing is not allowed and there will be no choirs.
• A musician and a cantor are allowed.
• Altar servers are not allowed.
• One lector is allowed.
• There will be no offertory collection. Parishioners may place their monetary contributions in a collection box provided at the entrance of the church. (Parishioners are encouraged to give online at https://marymotherofmercy.com/giving.)
• The priest celebrant and other ministers do not wear masks during the celebration of Mass, with the exception of during distribution of Holy Communion. Priest celebrant and other ministers never wear gloves at any point during Mass.
• The priest presider is to proceed from the sacristy directly to the altar.
• The offertory procession is omitted.
• Holding of hands during the Lord’s Prayer, not part of the Roman Rite, is strictly forbidden.
• The invitation to exchange a sign of peace is omitted.
• The priest sanitizes his hands before the distribution of Holy Communion and wears a mask while distributing the Eucharist.
• There will be only one station for the distribution of Holy Communion.
• For the reception of Holy Communion, you may lower your mask is to receive.
• It is strongly encouraged to receive Communion in the hand (the earliest and longest tradition in the Church’s 2,000 year history).
• Maintain six feet distance from one another when approaching to receive Holy Communion.
• Those preferring Holy Communion on the tongue are to come last to receive and the priest will sanitize his hands before distributing Holy Communion to the next person receiving on the tongue.
• The reception of the Precious Blood is not offered.
• The priest’s recessional is from the altar directly into the sacristy.

Sometimes we struggle with our belief in the Eucharist because we make it too much of an intellectual challenge. If God’s divinity was wed to humanity in the incarnation of Christ, then why is it not possible for God to take simple elements of bread and wine and transform them into his Body and Blood? Note:
On Saturday, June 6, Bishop Matano issued a letter to the faithful of the Diocese of Rochester. He reported that at the present time churches located in the diocese may have no more than of 25% of each church’s total occupancy. For our parish this means that 60 people could be in attendance at Holy Cross, 41 at St. James the Apostle, and 26 at St. Francis Solanus. Maintaining social distancing in the church (except for members of the same household), and adhering to other directives when people gather, complicates how to arrange for only 25% of our parishioners in each building. Right now the hope is that each of the parish churches will be open for weekend Masses beginning next weekend (June 21). Through email, postal service, and our parish website we will continue to be in communication with you regarding this matter. Two related issues:

1) The dispensation from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass will remain until further notice.

2) We will continue to offer the videotape of Sunday Mass on our parish website Mass until we can have full occupancy in each of our churches.

The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ:

Daily Mass Resumes:
We have resumed the parish’s daily Mass at St. Francis Solanus church in Interlaken, at 8:30 a.m. Monday to Friday. There are several directives we are required to follow. No more than 26 people may be in attendance and each person needs to wear a cloth covering their nose and mouth. They will need to sanitize their hands at the entrance of the church and remain six feet away from others in all directions, though families of the same household may sit together. There will be no social gathering before or after Mass. Be aware that in the church all hymnals, prayer cards, and other paper resources, including the “Book of Intentions,” will be removed from the pews and the church building. Holy water fonts will be empty. Congregational singing is not allowed. There will be only one lector and altar servers are not allowed to serve. The priest presider is to proceed from the sacristy directly to the altar and, after Mass, will return directly to the sacristy. The holding of hands during the Lord’s Prayer, not part of the Roman Rite, is strictly forbidden, and the invitation to exchange a sign of peace is omitted. It is strongly encouraged that you receive Communion in your hand (the earliest and longest tradition in the Church) while maintaining six feet distance from one another. During distribution of Holy Communion you may lower your face covering (mask) to receive the Eucharist. Those preferring to receive the Eucharist on the tongue are to come last to receive and the priest will sanitize his hands before distributing Holy Communion to each person who receives on the tongue. The reception of the Precious Blood is not offered, nor are the faithful to receive by intinction. The priest will wear a mask during the distribution of Holy Communion. Virtual Parish Mass:
The parish expresses its gratitude to Joan and Alan Gelatt for initiating and taping our parish’s virtual Sunday and Holy Day Masses. They were joined by Tom Duff who used his expertise to enhance the sound capability. Parish Deaths:
With sadness the parish notes the recent deaths of Joan Craig, age 92, who died on May 24, 2020, and Ellen Rider, age 77, who died on May 27, 2020. Joan was a parishioner most of her adult life and Ellen was a parishioner from childhood. Both attended the parish church of St. James the Apostle. Another recent death was of William (Bill) McNamara, age 95, who died on May 25, 2020. Bill was a well-known and active parishioner at St. James the Apostle until his move to Ithaca. Religious services for all have been postponed until a future date.

Parish Council Selections:
Last Sunday, the last Sunday of the month of May, the following were selected to be alternates to the Parish Council: Bill Masterson, Donna Ryan, and Martha Wooledge. An alternate has a one-year term as a member, participates in all council meetings, is assigned to a standing committee, and takes the place of a council member who is unable to fulfill their term. A “thank you” to the 26 parishioners who were nominated and considered serving, especially those who accepted the nomination and whose names were placed in a basket for drawing.

2020–2021 Parish Council Membership:
In addition to the three new alternates mentioned above, membership on the Parish Council for the term that runs from July 1, 2020, through June 30, 2021, includes the following parishioners: Marc Albanese, Timothy Davis, Laurenda Denmark, Thomas Duff, Gerald Frank, Susan Guydosh, Scott Hamula, Leo Kawczenski, Jacqueline Leidenfrost, Andrew Morpurgo, Charles Mullins, Richard Pell, Kathleen Rourke, Lynne Stager, and Barbara Willers. 

Parish Council Meeting:
The next Parish Council meeting was scheduled for this Thursday, June 11, in the St. Francis annex. Given the COVID-19 social distancing directive, this meeting will be rescheduled. This will be the last meeting of the year and, at the conclusion of the meeting, the nomination and election of the 2020–2021 executive committee (chair, vice-chair, and secretary) will take place. The formation of the Parish Council standing committees and election of the chairpersons for those committees will take place after the elections. Alternates and council members will be invited to express their preferences to serve on any one of the following standing committees: Word, Worship, Witness, and Fellowship.

Parish Exceeds CMA Goal:
The parish surpassed the given goal of $29,979 for the Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA), which concluded on May 31, 2020. It was reported on May 28 that 114 parish households pledged a total $30,841. A “thank you” to all who made a pledge—a pledge that helps support our diocese that in turn helps support our parish in a multitude of ways. The Lord bless and reward you for your generosity. It is greatly appreciated.

Do you understand the true spiritual meaning of hope? Hope is the theological virtue by which we desire the kingdom of heaven and eternal life as our happiness. It is found when we place our trust in Christ’s promises and rely not on our own strength, but on the help of the Holy Spirit. Hope, when seen in this way, doesn’t set its sights purely on the things of this world but on the promises of God to come. Hope always is linked with faith and love. Often our hope can become too self-focused and something that is only about me and things that matter to me. Christ’s resurrection reminds us that it is not ultimately for this purpose. What is the reason for your hope? Our Easter season provides the opportunity for us to again assess whether it is the kingdom of heaven and life eternal or something else.

Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord:
It is difficult to realize that this Thursday, May 21, will be forty days since the celebration of the Resurrection of the Lord. We missed gathering for the celebration of Easter and we will miss gathering for the feast of the Ascension of the Lord. Nevertheless, do celebrate this historical event in your homes by gathering for prayer in praise of God and with a special meal. The Easter season ends nine days after the Ascension with the celebration of Pentecost Sunday, this year on May 31. It remains a question if we will be able to gather for Pentecost.

Update on the 2019-2020 Catholic Ministries Appeal:
It was reported on May 7 that 112 of our parish households have pledged $26,471 toward the Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA). This represents 88.30% of our given goal of $29,979. “Thank you” to all families that have made a pledge. It is most appreciated. The appeal concludes at the end of May. If our goal is not reached by the end of May, our parish will be billed to make up the difference. Therefore, this is an urgent plea for all parish households to participate in this annual appeal. We know that if all 300 registered (active and inactive) households were to participate in this appeal we would have no difficulty in reaching our goal. Participation is primary, what is pledged is secondary. Pledge envelopes are located in the foyers of the churches or you may simply mail an offering to: Catholic Ministries Appeal, Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester, PO Box 92721, Rochester, NY 14692-8821. Be sure to record that it is from “The Parish of Mary, Mother of Mercy” with our parish number “368.” Thank you for your kind consideration of this request.

Parish Council Nominations:
During the month of May we ask parishioners to nominate themselves or others for membership on the parish council. Given our social distancing this year, please phone the parish office (607-294-0064) to place your name or another parishioner’s name in nomination. The council meets a minimum of four times a year. Members are assigned, after expressing their preference, to one of the standing committees: Word, Worship, Witness, or Fellowship. The term of membership is three years. The selection of new members will take place on the last Sunday of May (this year, May 31). New members will be invited to attend the council’s meeting on June 11, 2020, (hopefully we will be able to meet on that date). At that meeting, membership on the standing committees will be established.

Parish Census:
For the past several weeks attempts have been made to get our parish census updated—a continuous endeavor. Email addresses have been corrected and added, resulting in them being used for the past several weeks to communicate with parish households. If there is a member of a household that would like to receive their own email from the parish, separate from the household’s email, please let the parish office know. Households that do not have email (about 70 households) have received parish communications through the U.S. postal system. If you have not received either an email or a postal letter, please notify the parish office as soon as possible. The parish does not want anyone to be left out.

The parish census program comprises different categories: registered-active, non-registered-active, and registered-inactive. The parish is in communication with members in each of these three categories. Unfortunately, due to a lack of information, the parish is not in communication with nonregistered-inactive households (that is, Catholics who live within our parish territory but do not have an affiliation with our parish). There are two other groups of households, “contributor” or “unknown.” These are generally people who live outside our parish territory but retain some connection to our churches.

It would be most helpful if you could please alert the parish office when you have a change of address, phone number, or email address. The pastor and his staff hope you are enjoying the recent communiqués sent to parish households during this time of social distancing. We live in the hope that social distancing will never happen again.

Easter Duty:
Because of the inability to attend Sunday Mass due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Easter duty can be fulfilled by receiving Holy Communion at some time during the year. Church law allows for this. The canon reads: “All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year. The precept must be fulfilled during the Easter season unless it is fulfilled for a just cause at some other time during the year” (Church law #920).

St. James cemetery also has a green burial section. A plot in this section costs $950. When a person purchases a burial plot they are acquiring the right of burial, the cemetery retains title to the land and the property. Along with the right of burial is the right to place a stone marker as a memorial according to the rules and regulations of the cemetery. What do you imagine the resurrected life of heaven to be like? When we try to get our minds around such an enormous concept, we can easily find ourselves at a loss. For some folks, the enormity of the question actually causes them to ignore the reality of heaven or even conclude that it does not exist. Jesus knew that the magnitude and grandeur of eternal life are really too much for us to grasp. He kept it simple and described it in terms of relationship. The disciples treasured their relationship with Jesus, and he assured them, “Where I am you also may be.” Ultimately, that was enough for them to know. They would be with him. Strengthen your relationship with God as He is the way, the truth, and the life. Is the assurance that you will be with Him enough for you as well?

Parish Council Nominations:
During the month of May we ask parishioners to nominate themselves or others for membership on the parish council. Given our social distancing this year, please phone the parish office to place your name or another parishioner’s name in nomination. The council meets a minimum of four times a year. Members are assigned, after expressing their preference, to one of the standing committees: Word, Worship, Witness, or Fellowship. The term of membership is three years. The selection of new members will take place on the last Sunday of May (this year, May 31). New members will be invited to attend the council’s meeting on June 11, 2020, (hopefully we will be able to meet on that date). At that meeting, membership on the standing committees will be established.

Parish Census:
For the past several weeks attempts have been made to get our parish census updated—a continuous endeavor. Email addresses have been corrected and added, resulting in them being used for the past several weeks to communicate with parish households. If there is a member of a household that would like to receive their own email from the parish, separate from the household’s email, please let the parish office know. Households that do not have email (about 70 households) have received parish communications through the U.S. postal system. If you have not received either an email or a postal letter, please notify the parish office as soon as possible. The parish does not want anyone to be left out.

The parish census program comprises different categories: registered-active, non-registered-active, and registered-inactive. The parish is in communication with members in each of these three categories. Unfortunately, due to a lack of information, the parish is not in communication with nonregistered-inactive households (that is, Catholics who live within our parish territory but do not have an affiliation with our parish). There are two other groups of households, “contributor” or “unknown.” These are generally people who live outside our parish territory but retain some connection to our churches.

It would be most helpful if you could please alert the parish office when you have a change of address, phone number, or email address. The pastor and his staff hope you are enjoying the recent communiqués sent to parish households during this time of social distancing. We live in the hope that social distancing will never happen again.

Food Donations Needed:
On May 10, and ever second Sunday of a month, parishioners are invited to contribute non-perishable food for those in need, an even more urgent request given today’s world. The donations may be placed in front of the Blessed Mother statue at St. James throughout the week and will be donated to the Trumansburg Food Pantry. Monetary donations are also accepted. Checks should be made out to Mary, Mother of Mercy, with food pantry in the memo line. You may also donate food in the Food Pantry box at the ShurSave. Whatever food you contribute, please check the expiration date first as they cannot use food items that are past the printed date. We can never have enough food to distribute but it needs to be safe too. Thank you to all who contribute!

The precept must be fulfilled during the Easter season unless it is fulfilled for a just cause at some other time during the year” (Church law #920).

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
When you wake up in the morning, whose voice is the first one you listen to? Your own? Someone else’s? Or God’s? We all listen to someone and follow some sort of guidelines and principles. If it is a secular voice that propels us to get up in the morning and take up the task of the day’s agenda, then we may find ourselves off track. The advice found in the Acts of the Apostles was as true then as it is now, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” Most of what we listen to in secular voices is off the axis of truth and distorted. It may sound attractive, but it is deceptive at best. Many have gone astray like sheep and need to return to the Good Shepherd. Only Jesus can offer us the gate of life, and only Jesus as the Good Shepherd can really motivate us to take on the challenges of life. If we don’t recognize his voice, we can risk facing destruction.

2019–2020 Catholic Ministries Appeal:

Is God a real Being for you or simply an idea to be entertained? Often, we reduce God to a set of ideas, theories, and principles and neglect to see Him as the One who takes joy in helping us understand all of the events and mysteries of life. God delights in journeying with us and is the only One who can fill us with joy and make our hearts burn with excitement and jubilation. He is the One who assists us in recognizing the truth that is before us and interpreting not only the jewels of Sacred Scripture but the events of history. If we recognize God, we can also see that He inspires us to see the divine meaning of our own lives as well. Sometimes it takes us a little time. After all, even Jesus’s closest friends had to walk with him for a while on the road to Emmaus before their eyes were opened in the breaking of bread.

Staying in Touch with Parishioners:
During the past three weeks a letter, an Easter bulletin, and the bulletin for the Second Sunday of Easter have been communicated to parishioners either by postal service or email. These communiqués have necessitated making corrections in our parish census records. With the third communiqué last weekend, not one email address needed correction and thirty new emails were recorded in the parish’s census. The postal mailing went from 92 to 62. For the past two weeks, parishioners with no email address on their parish census form were telephoned inquiring if they had email (several parish households, where it was suspected or it was made known they had no email, were not phoned). The parish is presently communicating with 213 households by email. In the postal mailing for the Second Sunday of Easter, a hand written request was made on some of the letters petitioning for an email address for the household.

At the March 12 Parish Council meeting, the Worship Committee’s “People in the Pews Subcommittee” expressed the desire and plan to update our parish census, especially for updating the electronic communications, e.g. email. One blessing from the COVID-19, and the encouragement for social distancing and the suspension of social and educational events in the parish, was the updating of the parish census. The parish has: 239 households that are registered and active, 49 households registered and inactive, and 162 households not registered and inactive (that is, Catholics living in the territory of the parish with no affiliation with our parish). Combining all three groups, the parish has 450 households in our parish census.

It is known that the parish has several people attending Mass who are not registered. So this is my plea: if you attend Mass and are not registered, please fill out a parish census form as soon as possible. The forms are located in the foyers of each of our churches and also from the parish website. If a household has an email address not recorded on their parish census form, please do send the parish an email () containing your email address. Thank you.

Church Continues:
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to require us to maintain social distancing from one another, please be aware of the following:

• Bernard, Fr. Richard, and Bro. Antonine celebrate Mass daily at the friary praying for the well being of all and the ending of COVID-19.
• Bernard is at the parish office daily and at all times he is only a phone call away (607-294-0064).
• Bernard he is available every Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. at St. Francis Solanus church (social distancing will be respected).
• Each of the churches is open daily for visits and private prayer.
• The Sunday bulletin is published weekly and is found on the parish website and in the foyers of each church.
• While public Masses are suspended, there is an encouragement to participate in Mass by viewing it on TV or live stream via the diocesan website: dor.org.
• Our parish ordinary expenses average $10,500 per month. Without weekend collections we are not able to meet the parish ordinary expenses.
• To financially support the parish during this difficult time please consider making donation via on-line giving by going to the giving page on our parish website, https://marymotherofmercy.com/giving, and follow the directions under the “Donate Online” section. You may also mail a check to the Parish of Mary, Mother of Mercy, P.O. Box 403, Interlaken, NY 14847. Please alert others to our financial situation and encourage them to help through online giving or by check.
  

Easter Duty:
Because of the inability to attend Sunday Mass due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Easter duty can be fulfilled by receiving Holy Communion at some time during the year. Church law allows for this. The canon reads: “All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year. The precept must be fulfilled during the Easter season unless it is fulfilled for a just cause at some other time during the year” (Church law #920).

Scheduled Mass Intentions:
During this time of suspended public Masses, when a Mass intention has been scheduled for a particular day and time, that Mass intention will be remembered in a private Mass offered on the day scheduled.

2019–2020 Catholic Ministries Appeal:
Thank you to everyone who has responded with a pledge to the Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA). As of March 31, one hundred and eight parish families pledged $23,046, which is 76.87% of the parish goal of $29,979. What is primary is our parishioners’ participation. The CMA provides funding for important programs, services, and ministries that strengthen our whole Church. If you have not made a pledge, please do so as soon as possible. If we do not reach our given goal, the parish is billed to make up the difference.

Cancer Services Program (CSP):
Cortland and Tompkins Counties offer free cancer screenings to those who are uninsured or have health insurance that does not cover these screenings. The screening services are provided in local health centers, doctors’ offices, and hospitals. For more information, contact CSP at 866 442 2262.

Toiletries and Hygiene Products:
There is a basket in the vestibule of St. James church for donations of toiletries. The request comes from Catholic Charities which is in need of items like shampoo, toothpaste, diapers etc. The items will be transferred to the Catholic Charities office in Ithaca.
