“But a Samaritan traveler who came upon him was moved with compassion at the sight.” (Lk. 10:33)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
We have heard the story of the Good Samaritan so many times. Have we ever realized that it is an enemy and outcast who is the hero of the story? Freed from laws that limit acts of mercy and compassion, the Samaritan becomes the example of how to love God by loving our neighbor. Our minds know what our faith teaches, and our mouths know what words to speak. Ultimately, deep down in our conscience, we know how we ought to act. Yet, as we encounter each new day, do we always do what we are called to do? Our neighbors live next to us and far away. They are down the street, sitting beside us, living in Mexico, Honduras, Ecuador, Guatemala, Poland, Russia, China, Korea, and Iraq. Our neighbors are even found in people who want to hurt us. How do we love them as Jesus asks us to? How we answer this question will determine how much we really love God.

St. Francis Solanus Feast Day:
There will be wine and cheese social after the 5:00 p.m. Mass on Saturday, July 14, in honor of the feast day for St. Francis Solanus, O.F.M., even though in the United States it is celebrated on Tuesday, July 16. St. Francis Solanus was born on March 10, 1549, in Montilla, Cordoba, Spain. He joined the Order of Friars Minor in 1570 and was ordained a priest in 1576. In 1589 he was assigned as a missionary to South America and labored most successfully in Peru, northwestern Argentina, and Paraguay for twenty years. He died on July 14, 1610, in Lima, Peru, and was canonized a saint on December 27, 1726, by Pope Benedict XIII. He is the patron saint of Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay, and Peru. The northernmost mission along the “El Camino Real” (the King’s Highway connecting missions in what is now California) was named for Francis Solanus in 1823.

Feast Day for St. James the Apostle:
St. James the Apostle’s feast day is July 25. St. James, sometimes called James the Greater, is the brother of John the Apostle and both were sons of Zebedee and were given the name “Sons of Thunder” by Jesus. James was the first of the twelve apostles to be martyred, being decapitated by order of Herod Arippa I around the year 44 A.D. He is the patron of pilgrims, laborers, Spain, Guatemala, and Nicaragua. There will be an ice cream social at St. James the Apostle Church to celebrate the feast day. Stay tuned for more details!

Attendance and Collections in May:
On an average in the month of May there were 73 people at the 5:00 p.m. Mass, 109 at the 9:00 a.m. Mass, and 162 at the 10:30 a.m. Mass. The average Mass collections during the month were: $875 at the 5:00 p.m. Mass; $1,089 at the 9:00 a.m. Mass; and $767 at the 10:30 a.m. Mass. Parishioners participating through the WeShare online giving contributed $2,575. “Thank you all for your attendance and offerings.”

You Made a Difference:
This winter, during public policy weekend, our parish collected signatures in support of the Farmworkers Fair Labor Practices Act. Over 10,300 signatures were collected around the diocese. We’re happy to report that the New York State legislature finally passed legislation to give farmworkers basic labor rights, including the right to form a union and bargain collectively and to have one day of rest per week! We had been advocating for farmworkers to get paid overtime as well; the final bill establishes overtime for farmworkers after 60 hours of work a week. This is still not equal with other workers, but it is a step forward. Thank you for standing with our sisters and brothers whose work feeds us.

Cemeteries:
The Parish of Mary, Mother of Mercy, has two cemeteries: St. James the Apostle and Holy Cross. The cost of a traditional burial plot at either cemetery is $650. Please phone the parish office if you are interested in purchasing a plot or for further information.

Trumansburg Food Pantry:
Beginning January 1, 2020, there will be a need for a new volunteer coordinator for the Trumansburg Food Pantry. In the foyer of St. James the Apostle church there are flyers describing the role of the coordinator. Even though the position begins in January 2020, for planning purposes the need for someone is immediate.

Summer Retreats at Branches:
Take time for rest and prayer at some of the Branches retreat days this summer. Thursday, July 18, will be a day of faith formation, music, and a healing Mass. “Worship in the Woods and Healing Mass,” will be facilitated by R. Richard Crawley, OFM Cap. In “Contemplating Christ with Mary,” on Tuesday, July 23, Sr. Kathleen Murphy, OSF, will guide participants in contemplation of Christ through the beautiful mysteries of light. On Friday, August 9, Ann Kern will facilitate “The Little Way of St. Therese of Lisieux,” focusing on the simple life and intense love of God of this doctor of the Church and beloved saint who has inspired thousands. A Family Musical:
Please join the Encore Players for their summer musical production of Ian Fleming’s Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. St. Bernard’s in Pittsford:

Mecklenburg United Methodist Church, 6069 Turnpike Road, has the best thrift shop. The Check it Out Shop is open from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. every Friday and Saturday until September 7. Support Group

Support Group:
Many people who have suddenly lost a family member, friend, classmate or colleague find that sharing openly with fellow survivors about what they have lived through can help with the healing process. The Seneca County Suicide Prevention Coalition hosts twice-monthly support groups which meet in Waterloo and Ovid for convenience of the entire community. These groups are held on the first- and third- Monday of every month; and provide people who are survivors of loss or survivors of suicide the opportunity to talk in an open and inclusive environment, free of judgment or stigma. The Waterloo Public Library plays host on the first Monday of every month and the Ovid session takes place on the third Monday at the Ovid Federated Church. Pregnancy Care Center of the Finger Lakes:
Pregnancy Care Center of the Finger Lakes, located at 551 Exchange St. in Geneva, is offering a “Forgiven and Set Free” post abortive ten-week session beginning October 4 until December 13. Cancer Services Program (CSP):
Cortland and Tompkins Counties offer free cancer screenings to those who are uninsured or have health insurance that does not cover these screenings. The screening services are provided in local health centers, doctors’ offices, and hospitals. For more information, contact CSP at 866 442 2262.

Toiletries and Hygiene Products:
There is a basket in the vestibule of St. James church for donations of toiletries. The request comes from Catholic Charities which is in need of items like shampoo, toothpaste, diapers etc. The items will be transferred to the Catholic Charities office in Ithaca.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Jesus tells his disciples, “I am sending you like lambs among wolves.” Getting people to see the truth about who they are is not always easy or welcomed. Some people want to believe that they have life under control and they do not need any further advice, direction, or challenge from others. Being heralds of the Gospel means doing precisely that. We come with a message that is not always welcome or desired by our sisters and brothers. Yet, it is desperately needed. People need to be reminded of who they are, who God is, and the necessity of repentance for entering the Kingdom of God. It is not about what we want but what God wants. We are called to be peacemakers and laborers for justice and mercy. Are you willing to bring this challenging message to those who may be indifferent or even hostile to hearing it?

Collection for Emerging Churches:
The countries in Central and Eastern Europe have faced many years of hardship. The people there have been oppressed by czars and radical communism, suffered horrendous crimes against humanity, and endured revolutionary, civil, and world wars. Under communism, organized religion was opposed in favor of atheism in an attempt to overthrow the power of the Russian Orthodox Church. Since the collapse of the former Soviet Union in 1991, Central and Eastern European countries have been working to rebuild political structures, social welfare, and their economies. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) Subcommittee on the Church in Central and Eastern Europe funds projects in 28 countries to build the pastoral capacity of the Church and to rebuild and restore the faith in these countries. The funds collected in the collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe are used to support seminaries, youth ministry, social service programs, pastoral centers, church construction and renovation, and Catholic communications projects in these countries. The collection for Central and Eastern Europe will be taken up this weekend, July 6 and 7.

Food Donations at St. James:
Next Sunday, and every second Sunday of the month, please bring non-perishable food items to St. James church. You may place the items in front of the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Monetary gifts are also welcome.

Gospel:
Jesus said, “No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was left behind is fit for the kingdom of God.” (Lk. 9:62)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
“No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was left behind is fit for the kingdom of God.” Jesus’s words may seem a bit harsh but are directly on target. The life of discipleship can be costly. Upholding the tenets of the Gospel can put us at odds, even with those most close to us. Jesus never misses an opportunity to spend time with outcasts and sinners. It matters little to him whether doing so breaks a Sabbath law. The Gospel may seem unrealistic, but it is the Gospel nonetheless. We respect the dignity of all persons, from conception to natural death. We work on behalf of justice, which calls us to be with the poor, lonely, confused, and broken. The old “eye for an eye” mentality no longer applies when it comes to dealing with those who hurt us. When Jesus asks you to follow him, will you go?

Davie (72) at the Covert Funeral Home on June 15, 2019. At Holy Cross church in Ovid on June 21, 2019, there was a funeral Mass for Robert E. Gurhrie (87). On June 22, 2019, there was a funeral service for Barbara Carey at the Covert Funeral Home.

Peter’s Pence Collection:
The national collection date for the Peter’s Pence Collection is this weekend, June 29 and 30. The Peter’s Pence Collection derives its name from an ancient custom when King Alfred the Great, in ninth-century England, collected money, called a “pence,” from landowners as financial support for the Pope. Today, the Peter’s Pence Collection supports the Pope’s philanthropy by giving the Holy Father the means to provide emergency assistance to those in need because of natural disaster, war, oppression, and disease.

Fr. Bernard’s Fiftieth Ordination Anniversary:
A committee of nine parishioners met on Monday, June 17, at the parish center in Interlaken to discuss the celebration plans for Fr. Bernard’s fiftieth anniversary of his ordination. The following was decided: the celebration will take place, under a tent, on the lawn of St. Fidelis Friary on Sunday, September 8, beginning with Mass at 12:00 noon, appetizers at 1:00 p.m., a buffet reception at 2:00 p.m., and a band for dancing from 3:00–6:00 p.m. Fr. Bernard’s family will be present. Hopefully all parishioners (adults and children) and others will join in the celebration to make this a parish family event.

Mary Ruckdeschel:
The parish is indebted to Mary for her five years of service to the parish as secretary. Mary has been conscientious and competent in her work. She has been faithful, reliable, and flexible especially during the merger of the three parishes. Please thank Mary and wish her well as she concludes her ministry at the parish on June 30, 2019.

Susan Guydosh:
Please welcome Susan Guydosh to the newly created position of parish office helper and coordinator of the parish’s religious education program.

Parish Council:
The Parish Council met on June 13, the last meeting for those whose terms end this month. We “thank” Norman Hummel, Michelle Humulock, Gerard Messmer, and Jessica Portillo for their parish ministry in serving on the council. We are most appreciative. The meeting continued with the welcoming of the new members: Charles Mullins and Lynne Stager, and the new alternates: Marc Albanese and Thomas Perry. The meeting concluded with the election of an executive committee and the appointment of members to the standing committees. The 2019–2020 committees are as follows:

The sacristan would primarily be responsible for setting up for Mass, ordering supplies, and assuring that scheduled lectors and Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion are present for Mass. Governor Cuomo has prioritized passage (by the end of June) of dangerous legislation to allow surrogate motherhood for profit. The bill would enable the buying and selling of children, the exploitation of women, and would lead to an increased reliance on IVF (in vitro fertilization) and the destruction of human embryos. Parish Council:
The Parish Council met on June 13, the last meeting for those whose terms end this month. We “thank” Norman Hummel, Michelle Humulock, Gerard Messmer, and Jessica Portillo for their parish ministry in serving on the Parish Council. We are most appreciative. The meeting continued with the welcoming of the new members, Charles Mullins and Lynne Stager, and the new alternates, Marc Albanese and Thomas Perry. Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
We believe in one God who is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The reality that God is three distinct Persons yet One is something that is difficult for the mind to grasp. But, understanding God in this way is not impossible for the contemplative heart. We need only to look around us to see our triune God playing and interplaying with all of creation with each of His Persons manifesting itself. God our Father abounds in and through creation. God the Son beats in every human heart, in love, in tenderness of mercy, and in our neighbor. God the Holy Spirit breathes life into all things and guides the course of time and the seasons, bringing wisdom and guidance to all things. When faced with a decision or a dilemma, where do we turn? Whenever we have to discern the proper course of action, the Holy Spirit is available as our advocate and guide. As Christians, we look not to our world for direction but to God. The gifts of the Holy Spirit are given to help us find our path to proper thought and conduct. Wisdom, right judgment, knowledge, understanding, fortitude, piety, and fear of the Lord are all perfect tools for discernment. These gifts allow us to keep our relationships and perspective in proper order. The annual collection for the Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC) will take place after the parish’s regular collection this weekend, June 8 and 9. This national appeal supports efforts in the United States and around the world to use the media, Internet, and print publications to help people connect with Christ. Fifty percent of funds collected remain in each diocese to support local communication efforts. The other half is used to support national projects in the United States and in developing countries around the world.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
How do we find our way through life and discover who we really are? It is easy to get distracted by life’s preoccupations and worldly constructs. We can avoid dealing with deeper questions simply by being absorbed in life’s demands and the roles we are asked to play. Is it important to us that we come from God and have our identity in Him? The world cannot succeed in telling us who we are. Only God can. Only through Jesus’s resurrection can we see clearly that he is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end, and the bright morning star. It is by following his example that we can all become one with the Father and brought to perfection. We are designed to be one with God and united with one another as believers in Jesus Christ. When someone experiences our speech and actions, do they witness the fact that we truly believe this?

Parish Council Results:
At the 10:30 a.m. Mass last Sunday, May 26, Lynne Stager and Charles Mullins were selected for three-year terms to the Parish Council and Mark Albanese and Thomas Perry were both selected for one-year terms as alternates. We thank all who nominated nineteen parishioners to the council and all the nominees for considering their nomination. We thank our outgoing members whose terms will be completed at the end of June: Michelle Humulock, Gerard Messmer, Norman Hummel, and Jessica Portillo. Pentecost Brunch:
There will be a dish-to-pass brunch on Pentecost Sunday, June 9, after the 10:30 Mass at Holy Cross. The brunch will take place in the parish meeting center at Holy Cross. First Communion:
This Sunday, June 2, Aidan Grove will celebrate his First Communion at the 9:00 a.m. Mass. Aidan’s first communion is a cause of joy for his family and for our parish.

Parish Part-time Position:
There is a new position offered in the parish, as a catechetical coordinator/office helper. The job, which begins July 1, would require five and a half hours per week plus a three-hour Sunday commitment once a month. Everyone is welcome to apply for the position. Please speak with Fr. Bernard regarding the job description.

April Attendance and Collections:
On an average in the month of April (which included Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday) there were 71 people at the 5:00 p.m. Mass, 127 at the 9:00 a.m. Mass, and 104 at the 10:30 a.m. Mass. The average Mass collections during the month were: $1,040 at St. Francis on Saturdays, and, on Sundays, $1,094 at St. James and $1,193 Holy Cross. Parishioners participating through WeShare online giving contributed $3,900. “Thank you all for your attendance and offerings.”

Food Donations at St. James:
Next Sunday, and every second Sunday of the month, please bring non-perishable food items to St. James church. They will be donated to the Trumansburg Food Pantry. You may place the items in front of the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Monetary gifts are also welcome.

Fiftieth Ordination Anniversary:
Fr. Bernard was ordained a priest on November 8, 1969, and so will celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of his ordination this year. A celebration of this event will take place on Sunday, September 8 on the grounds of St. Fidelis Friary, Interlaken. A committee is forming to plan the celebration. Retreat Day for Ministers:

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
To listen openly and be willing to dialogue are the most effective ways to discern how to solve a problem. We must be open to the Holy Spirit and, under his guidance, allow our opinions to be challenged and changed. Learning to trust the active work of the Holy Spirit in all things releases us from fear and brings us closer to living in the peace Jesus promised. Scripture, Church teaching and practice, the wisdom of others in our community, our relationship with God, and the promptings and stirrings of our hearts all have to be weighed when making important decisions. Parish Council Member Selection:
This Sunday at the 10:30 a.m. Mass, the selection of new parish council members will take place by drawing names from a basket of those nominated. The first two persons so selected will serve a three-year term and the next three persons will serve will serve on the council for a one year term as alternates. “Thank you” to the parishioners who nominated themselves or others and to all the parishioners who accepted the nomination.

Holy Day of Obligation:
Thursday, May 30, is the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord. In celebration of this Solemnity, there will be a 6:00 p.m. Mass on Wednesday at St. Francis Solanus followed by a free will offering dinner of baked stuffed shells and meatballs. On Thursday there will be a 9:00 a.m. Mass at St. James the Apostle followed by a coffee hour. That day there will also be a 6:00 p.m. Mass at Holy Cross followed by a social event to be announced.

Pentecost Brunch:
There will be a dish to pass brunch on Pentecost Sunday, June 9, after the 10:30 mass at Holy Cross. The brunch will take place in the parish meeting center at Holy Cross. First Communion:

Fiftieth Ordination Anniversary:
Fr. Bernard was ordained a priest on November 8, 1969, and so will celebrate his fiftieth anniversary of his ordination this year. A celebration of this event will take place on Sunday, September 8 on the grounds of St. Fidelis Friary, Interlaken. A committee is forming to plan the celebration. Prayers for Our Parish:
The staff and the parishioners of St. Pius X parish intend to pray for healing and hope for each of the parishes and faith communities in the Diocese of Rochester. During the week of May 26 they will be offering prayers specifically for the parish of Mary, Mother of Mercy. Parish Part-time Position:
There is a new position offered in the parish, as a catechetical coordinator/office helper. The job would require five and a half hours per week plus a three-hour Sunday commitment once a month. Personal Care Products Collection:
While many personal care items are donated to the food pantries throughout the year, during the month of May additional attention is being paid to these items as being needed on a constant basis. These items are not covered by SNAP/food stamps. Personal care products that are needed include items like soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, body soap or washes, shaving soap, razors, or deodorants. This special collection will be held only during the month of May.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
How do people know that you are a disciple of Jesus Christ? Some folks prefer to keep their faith a secret and rarely mention their belief in Jesus. Others are more vocal and readily tell people that they are Christian. For Jesus, there is another way to recognize whether one is a disciple. He tells his friends that all will know they are disciples if they have love for one another. The love to which Jesus calls us to is not just an earthly love. It’s not just about doing nice things for people or even keeping positive thoughts about others. Jesus’s love is divine love. Put simply, Jesus became human so that we can become divine. We are called to look at the world, people, and ourselves as God does. This requires unconditional compassion and a whole lot of mercy and forgiveness. We cannot do this alone. That is why the risen Christ remains with us, especially through the Eucharist, to help us become who he is. If done correctly, there will be no question about who has our allegiance.

Celebration of Father’s Fiftieth Anniversary: September 8

Diocesan Missions Sunday:
Today we are honoring the Sisters of St. Joseph in Brazil and the Sisters of Mercy in Chile and we are invited to take part in the missionary work of the Church. We may not all have to move to another town or city to do so. Each of us is moved to help others live in the faith that sustains us. Bishop Salvatore Matano calls us to a responsible sharing in the missionary works of the Diocese of Rochester. May we share the gift of faith today by helping our missionary friends with our prayers and a generous gift in the second collection today.

Sacrament of Confirmation:On Thursday, May 16, at the Immaculate Conception church in Ithaca, Bishop Salvatore R. Matano confirmed several of our parishioners: Clare Marie Carver, Madison Feely, Bryce Grove, Colby Grove, Tylor Hunt, Andrew Masters, and Ashton Wiggins. Our parish rejoices in their commitment to our Lord Jesus and to being like Jesus in promoting the Kingdom of God.

Parish Council Nominations:
During the month of May we ask parishioners to nominate themselves or others for membership on the Parish Council. The council meets a minimum of four times a year and members are assigned, after expressing their preference, to one of the standing committees: Word, Worship, Witness, or Fellowship. The selection of members will take place on Sunday, May 26. The final meeting of the council for this year will be June 13 at which both old and new members will be present.

Third Quarter Finance Report:
The parish’s Finance Council met on April 25 and reviewed the fiscal year third quarter finance report that ended on March 31, 2019. Our operating revenue for the three quarters of the fiscal year amounted to $155,212.14 with operating expenses of $176,235.95, leaving the parish with an operating deficit of $21,023.81. Parish savings was used to cover that deficit. The weekend collections, in comparison to last year at this time, are down $11,637.79, largely attributed to the decrease in the number of parishioners attending weekend Mass. The report also showed that our ordinary expenses are down $10,047.65 from the previous year. At the time of the parish merger, $150,000 of parish savings was set aside for capital improvements. Of that amount this fiscal year, $52,459 has been spent on capital improvements and are not recorded as part of the regular operating expenses mentioned above.

2018–2019 Catholic Ministries Appeal:
The Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA) office reported on May 7 that nearly 24,000 generous donors have pledged more than $6 million to this year’s CMA. This represents 90% of the $6.725 million diocesan goal. Thirty-three parishes have reached their assigned goal (our parish of Mary, Mother of Mercy, being one of them) and another twenty-three have raised 90% or more of their assigned goal. Congratulations and sincere thanks to all of you for your hard and tireless work for the CMA. Please remember that only paid gifts/pledge payments received at the Pastoral Center by close of business Monday, June 3, 2019, will be counted toward this year’s campaign.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
When something delights us, it touches us in a unique and special way. We are stirred within, filled with happiness, glee, and joy. The object of our delight captivates us, and we are eager, sometimes beyond words, to obtain it. Have you ever been delighted by your faith, the Gospel, God’s Word, or an encounter with God? The Gentiles were delighted when they learned they were sharers in the Good News and ecstatic that they were included. They recognized their shepherd and realized that they discovered something or someone unlike any other before. We can easily become lukewarm in our relationship with God and forget just how life-changing the Good News of our faith really is. We are brought to the springs of life-giving water and are gifted with something secular life simply cannot provide: Jesus, the Good Shepherd.

It was fifty-five years ago that the Diocese of Rochester sent the first sisters to work in the missions. We are called to help them next weekend with our prayers and sacrificial gifts (there will be a second collection that weekend), so that they may continue to bring Christ into a world where darkness, despair, and emptiness prevail. Surely, we can help to bring hope to them.

Mother’s Day Flower Sale:
The annual Mother’s Day flower sale in support of Birthright happens this weekend. You may purchase one flower for $1, a half dozen for $5, or one dozen for $10. Birthright is an organization that helps pregnant women by offering alternatives to abortion. They offer free self-administered pregnancy tests, prenatal information, medical referrals, financial assistance, and medical maternity and baby clothes. All services are free and confidential. Please extend your support to Birthright.

May’s Day of Prayer
Sr. Monica Weis, SSJ (Nazareth college faculty emerita in English and communications) will present: “Merton, Music and the More” at Notre Dame Retreat House (Canandaigua, N.Y.) on Tuesday, May 14. This will be a presentation of five periods of Merton’s life and invites participants to reflect on their own personal stories, while expanding their knowledge of Merton.
