Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ July 29, 2018

B110OT17_vib_qtr_EN_4c

First reading:
“For thus says the LORD, ‘They shall eat and there shall be some left over’.” (2 Kgs. 4:43b)

Psalm:
The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs. (Ps. 145)

Second reading:
One Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. (Eph. 4:5-6)

Gospel:
Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those who were reclining, and also as much of the fish as they wanted. (Jn. 6:11)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Living the Gospel does not require much. In fact, less is sometimes more. Simple gestures or random acts of kindness can have unimaginable results and change lives. It is easy to believe that we do not have what it takes to make a difference, but we do! The key is to learn how to be grateful for the little gifts you possess and share them freely and abundantly. It does not take much to satisfy the hungers of the human heart or mend the wounds of sorrow and pain. All we need to know is that God is with us. All people need to know is that we are with them. God provides the rest. Truly be present to those you meet this week and offer them your most precious gift, the gift of yourself.

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ July 22, 2018

B107OT16_nat_1_qtr_EN_4c

First reading:
I myself will gather the remnant of my flock from all the lands to which I have driven them and bring them back to their meadow. (Jer .23:3a)

Psalm:
The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want. (Ps. 23)

Second reading:
For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. (Eph. 2:18)

Gospel:
When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things. (Mk 6:34)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
The many images we have of God help frame our relationship with Him. Have we ever imagined Jesus so deeply moved with emotion and engulfed with pity for us? We often are sheep without a shepherd who are lured by the emptiness of worldly attractions and superficial desires. We become lost. God, in the depth of His being, is deeply moved by our pain, loneliness, and heartache. God does not judge or condemn. He loves and is mercy itself. He knows firsthand the pain that comes with being lost and alone and desires to teach us about His merciful love. Do we want to be taught? Listen to God’s word and be open to God’s presence in the Eucharist.

Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ July 15, 2018

B104OT15_vib_qtr_EN_4c

First reading: “The LORD took me from following the flock, and said to me, Go, prophesy to my people Israel.” (Am. 7:15)

Psalm: Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation. (Ps. 85)

Second reading: In him we have redemption by his blood, the forgiveness of transgressions, in accord with the riches of his grace. (Eph. 1:7)

Gospel: Jesus summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over unclean spirits. The Twelve drove out many demons, and they anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them. (Mk. 6:7, 13)

Live the Liturgy – Inspiration for the Week:
Do you describe yourself as a holy person? For many, becoming holy may not be seen as a desirous goal. We are all called to be holy but maybe not in the way we often imagined. Holiness is nothing more than doing ordinary things with great love and faith. St. Teresa of Calcutta says, “Holiness is not something extraordinary. Holiness is for every one of us as a simple duty—the acceptance of God with a smile, at all times, anywhere and everywhere.” Holiness has to do with under-standing that our faith has a lot to do with how we see and live life. It is that simple. Are you willing to go about the simple business of your life and be holy?

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ July 8, 2018

B101OT14_vib_qtr_EN_4c

First reading:
They shall know that a prophet has been among them. (Ez. 2:5b)

Psalm:
Our eyes are fixed on the Lord, pleading for his mercy. (Ps. 123)

Second reading:
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Cor. 12:9a)

Gospel:
When the Sabbath came he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astonished. They said, “Where did this man get all this? What kind of wisdom has been given him? What mighty deeds are wrought by his hands!” (Mk. 6:2)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
It seems that Jesus is always facing some kind of opposition. Today, those from his native place amaze him because of their lack of faith. We oppose Jesus as well. It is not easy to be challenged and realize our great need to change. We grow comfortable with ourselves and our surroundings and resist change. We become defensive when the wisdom Jesus utters asks us to leave ourselves and our concerns and think more about others. We lack faith in God, faith in ourselves, and faith in one another. We are asked to keep our eyes fixed on the Lord and allow ourselves to be stretched. Jesus knows what he is talking about. Do we really believe this?

Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ July 1, 2018

B098OT13_nat_1_qtr_EN_4c

First reading:
For God formed man to be imperishable; the image of his own nature he made him. (Wis. 2:23)

Psalm:
I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me. (Ps. 30)

Second reading:
For you know the gracious act of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, for your sake he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich. (2 Cor. 8:9)

Gospel:
He took the child by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise!” The girl, a child of twelve, arose immediately and walked around. At that they were utterly astounded. (Mk. 5:41-42)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
God does not rejoice in our demise or our destruction. Rather, He made us in His image and desires that we have life. He also desires that we be healed and know His loving touch. There is great power in an embrace. The touch of another can heal wounds and restore life. There is also power in faith. Faith can turn us toward the truth and turn us toward God. God can profoundly change how we see Him, ourselves, and one another. God desires that we turn toward Him and be healed of all that wounds and binds us so that we can be free and enjoy the fullness life. Reach out and share your faith with someone this week so that they can receive God’s life-changing embrace.

Solemnity of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist ~ June 24, 2018

B587JohnBapt_vib_qtr_EN_4c

First reading:
The LORD called me from birth, from my mother’s womb he gave me my name. (Is. 49:1b)

Psalm:
I praise you, for I am wonderfully made. (Ps. 139)

Second reading:
Behold, one is coming after me; I am not worthy to unfasten the sandals of his feet. (Acts 13:25b)

Gospel:
When they came on the eighth day to circumcise the child, they were going to call him Zechariah after his father, but his mother said in reply, “No. He will be called John.” (Lk. 1:59-60)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
As we celebrate today’s feast, we are reminded that God creates and fashions each one of us with intent and purpose. We are not random accidents. We are special creations and wonderfully made. Each of us brings a unique twist to the one shot at life that we are given. As people of faith and children of God, we are asked to use our specialness to announce God’s kingdom. Each of us reveals a unique part of God’s face. Each day presents opportunities to communicate our faith to others and to reveal God’s mercy. We have the means to point the way to Christ. How can we show Jesus to others today?

Guidelines for the Reception of Holy Communion:
Please note that our Catholic Church has a discipline regarding communion, namely, that Catholics cannot receive communion in non-Catholic churches and non-Catholics cannot receive communion in Catholic churches. A summarized rationale is that there is no uniformity among the churches regarding the understanding of the Eucharist and that, even though we may be one in our belief in Jesus, in reality we are divided as believers in Jesus. The Catholic Church’s discipline highlights the reminder and the need to continually work for oneness among Christians, that we all may be one in faith, life, and worship. Please communicate to Catholics and to non-Catholics that they respect and follow the Catholic discipline. The guidelines can be found in our hymnals on page 231.

Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ June 17, 2018

B092OT11_vib_qtr_EN_4c

First reading:
Birds of every kind shall dwell beneath it, every winged thing in the shade of its boughs. (Ez. 17:23b)

Psalm:
Lord, it is good to give thanks to you. (Ps. 92)

Second reading:
Yet we are courageous, and we would rather leave the body and go home to the Lord. (2 Cor. 5:8)

Gospel:
“This is how it is with the kingdom of God; it is as if a man were to scatter seed on the land? Of its own accord the land yields fruit, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear.” (Mk. 4:26, 28-29)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Jesus compares the Kingdom of God to a mustard seed, the tiniest of seeds. When planted, the tiny mustard seed grows into a tremendous tree with large branches. So, too, in each of our lives, small things can have profound effects. God can use one of our more insignificant gestures to radically change another person’s life. It may be the kindness of a smile, our willingness to accommodate someone, listening to someone’s story, helping someone who is hurting, standing up for someone who is right, or complimenting someone on something they did. We all have God-given gifts and talents. Our task is to use them creatively, consistently, lovingly, and generously. We trust that God will take care of the rest.

Right to Life:
Three times in modern history the word “person” has been redefined. In 1857 the U.S. Supreme Court declared that African Americans were not legal persons, instead they were the “property” of their owners. It wasn’t until 1868 that the fourteenth amendment granted full U.S. citizenship to African-Americans. In 1936 the German Supreme Court, the Reichsgericht, refused to recognize as persons any Jews living in Germany. Soon afterwards genocide became legal in that country and it is estimated that over six million Jews were killed in the resulting Holocaust. In 1973 the U.S Supreme Court ruled that the unborn were not persons in the legal sense: they have no civil or human rights. The unborn are the “property” of the mother, who can “choose” to abort them up to the day of delivery. Justice Henry Blackmon in Roe v. Wade wrote: “The word person as used in the Fourteenth Amendment does not include the unborn.” Please pray that every person will be granted the God given rights to which each individual is entitled, from conception to natural death.

Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ June 10, 2018

B089OT10_vib_qtr_EN_4c

First reading:
The woman answered, “The serpent tricked me into it, so I ate it.” (Gn. 3:13b)

Psalm:
With the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption. (Ps. 130)

Second reading:
For this momentary light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison. (2 Cor. 4:17)

Gospel:
And looking around at those seated in the circle he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.” (Mk. 3:34-35)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
A kingdom divided against itself cannot stand. Is the kingdom of your soul divided? We are often confronted with choices that appear to be good but in essence are not. We struggle with choosing good over evil and right from wrong. Conflicts often exist within, and we walk through life with a divided heart. We realize what is needed to live with God but find ourselves doing the exact opposite. As we gather with our brothers and sisters and seek God’s gift of Christ in the Eucharist, may we not only be united with one another in faith but united with God within. All conflicts and divisions can cease, and we can act with a focused, strong, and determined heart.

Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ~June 3, 2018

Year of the Eucharist June 18, 2017–June 3, 2018

B168BodyBlood_vib_qtr_EN_4c

First reading:
“This is the blood of the covenant that the LORD has made with you in accordance with all these words of his.” (Ex. 24:8b)

Psalm:
I will take the cup of salvation, and call on the name of the Lord. (Ps. 116)

Second reading:
For this reason he is mediator of a new covenant. (Heb. 9:15a)

Gospel:
He said to them, “This is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed for many.” (Mk. 14:24)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
As we gather today to reaffirm our faith in the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist, we are reminded that we are also the Body of Christ. The mission of the Gospel calls us to be Christ for others. There is so much brokenness and pain in our world. Many people are lost and feeling lonely, marginalized and oppressed, victimized and abused. Every time we receive the Body (and Blood) of Christ, we are asked to become what we eat. Are we willing to step aside from our preoccupations and concerns so that we can be Christ for others?

Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” (Mt. 28:18-19)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
The love relationship that exists among the Persons of the Holy Trinity is both intense and intimate. As beautiful as this teaching is, it demonstrates how human language really pales in trying to capture the essence of God. The Father brings us to the creative, powerful, yet gently meticulous part of God who has brought mountains and hills into being, as well as each of his children. Still the Father is more than this. The Son demonstrates the unconditional love of God filled with endless mercy and compassion. This love really understands the journey of the marginalized and the poor and has no use for created powers and structures that alienate and hurt people. But the Son is even more than this. The Holy Spirit is the breath of God who teaches wisdom and brings understanding, who governs the seasons and discerns the thoughts of human hearts. Yet the Holy Spirit is still more than this. We worship a God who is beyond and also intimately bonded to all that he has made, without whom nothing could be sustained in being. Praise the Holy Trinity!
