Pentecost Sunday ~ May 20, 2018

Year of the Eucharist June 18, 2017–June 3, 2018

First reading:
Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. (Acts 2:3-4A)

Psalm:
Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth. (Ps. 104)

Second reading:
If we live in the Spirit, let us also follow the Spirit. (Gal. 5:25)

Gospel:
Jesus said to his disciples: “When the Advocate comes whom I will send you from the Father, the Spirit of truth that proceeds from the Father, he will testify to me.” (Jn. 15:26)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
“Lord, send out your Spirit and renew the face of the earth!” We only know that the wind exists because of what it does. A gentle breeze felt on our face or watching a tree swaying or swirling snowflakes all prove the existence of “something” causing these things to happen. But, apart from its effects, we cannot see the origin or substance of wind. The Holy Spirit is the wind of God. Watching an early Church emerge, people coming to believe, disciples of Jesus change the way they live and conduct their affairs-all give witness to the presence of the Holy Spirit. Observing the courage and conviction of those who have found faith, working for justice, feeding the poor, seeing how wounds are healed-all point to something greater than ourselves working and living among us. How do our lives give witness to the Spirit?

This weekend we welcome Tony Magliano, an internationally syndicated social justice and peace columnist, who will address the assembly after the final prayer at each of the Masses. His theme is to clearly explain how prayerful reflections upon the ancient wisdom of the Gospel, and the modern principles of Catholic social teaching, can effectively guide a consistent, logical, and life-affirming approach to the moral issues facing humanity in the twenty-first century.

For over fifty years the Sisters of St. Joseph and the Sisters of Mercy have provided missionary work in Brazil and Chile. This weekend, May 19 and 20, we call upon all to help the sisters with your prayers and a sacrificial gift. A second collection will be taken up next Sunday so that the sisters may be supported in continuing to bring Christ into a world where darkness, despair, and emptiness prevail.

Thank You:
The Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord (Ascension Thursday, May 10) was enhanced by socials after each of the Masses. We owe a debt of gratitude to the organizers: Ronnie Fairclough for providing juice and pastries at the 9:00 a.m. Mass at Holy Cross; Janice McLaughlin for both strawberry and peach shortcakes at the 12:15 Mass at St. Francis; and Camille Taranto for the amaretto coffee, amaretto cheese cakes, and cannoli at the 7:00 p.m. Mass at St. James. Seventh Sunday of Easter ~ May 13, 2018

Year of the Eucharist June 18, 2017–June 3, 2018

sp1623bi_4c(1)

First reading:
“Therefore, it is necessary that one of the men who accompanied us the whole time the Lord Jesus came and went among us … become with us a witness to his resurrection.” (Acts 1:21-22B)

Psalm:
The Lord has set his throne in heaven. (Ps. 103)

Second reading:
Beloved, if God so loved us, we must also love one another. (1 Jn. 4:11)

Gospel:
Lifting up his eyes to heaven, Jesus prayed saying: “As you sent me into the world, so I sent them into the world. And I consecrate myself for them, so that they also may be consecrated in truth.” (Jn. 17:11b, 18-19)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Prayer is essential to Christian living and decision making. The goal of prayer is really rather simple. By prayer we can deepen our love and desire for God and increase our knowledge and understanding of God’s unconditional love for us. Prayer is not about acquiring this or that or convincing God to act on our behalf. Prayer is the way we begin the process of change, of coming to see as God sees and realize that God’s presence permeates all God has created. If we strive to develop this life of prayer, then Jesus naturally will become our way, our truth and our life. We can then live in the world as he would live in the world.

Ministry schedule for Holy Cross

May 2018:

(forthcoming)

Sixth Sunday of Easter ~ May 6, 2018

Year of the Eucharist June 18, 2017–June 3, 2018

B056East6_nat_1_qtr_EN_4c

First reading:
Then Peter proceeded to speak and said, “In truth, I see that God shows no partiality.” (Acts 10:34)

Psalm:
The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power. (Ps. 98)

Second reading:
In this way the love of God was revealed to us: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might have life through him. (1 Jn. 4:9)

Gospel:
“It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you. This I command you: love one another.” (Jn. 15:16-17)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
“Whoever is without love does not know God, for God is love.” So many people hunger for love. All of us desire to be intimately connected with others, God, and our world. Many things can work against this and cause us to feel alienated and even profoundly sad. Pope Francis tells us that our “infinite sadness can only be cured by an infinite love.” We have been touched by God’s love. We are called to bring that love to others so that their sadness and wounds can be healed. We must do this even for those we do not particularly like or who have hurt us. We cannot let anything stand in the way of love.

Catholic Quotes—Words to Inspire the Faithful:
“Love doesn’t mean doing extraordinary or heroic things. It means knowing how to do ordinary things with tenderness.” ~Jean Vanier

May 2018:

(forthcoming)

Fifth Sunday of Easter ~ April 29, 2018

Year of the Eucharist June 18, 2017–June 3, 2018

B053East5_trad_2_qtr_EN_4c

First reading:
The church throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria was at peace. It was being built up and walked in the fear of the Lord, and with the consolation of the Holy Spirit it grew in numbers. (Acts 9:31)

Psalm:
I will praise you, Lord, in the assembly of your people. (Ps. 22)

Second reading:
Children, let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth. (1 Jn. 3:18)

Gospel:
“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine grower. He takes away every branch in me that does not bear fruit, and everyone that does he prunes so that it bears more fruit.” (Jn. 15:1-2)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
“Let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth.” Real love, especially unconditional love, cannot exist apart from action. We are called to bear much fruit and become Jesus’s disciples. We live in a world that is suffering so badly. By our actions and the way we organize our lives, we can model the Gospel values that many no longer see as important. We can be healers who put mercy into action. We can choose to unconditionally respect human life and challenge those who do not. We can live nonviolent lives, resist the lust for power, and avoid greed in all its forms. It is difficult to live the Gospel message of love. We will often be met with rejection. We need to allow God to prune away everything that makes it difficult to love. Then we have to take the risk and call others to a higher standard, no matter the price.

Catholic Quotes—Words to Inspire the Faithful:
“I think that if any good thing shall go forward, something must be adventured.” ~St. Thomas More

Fourth Sunday of Easter / Good Shepherd Sunday ~ April 22, 2018

Year of the Eucharist June 18, 2017–June 3, 2018

B050East4_nat_1_qtr_EN_4c

First reading:
“It was in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazorean whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead; in his name this man stands before you healed.” (Acts 4:10B)

Psalm:
The stone rejected by the builders has become the cornerstone. (Ps. 118)

Second reading:
Beloved: See what love the Father has bestowed on us that we may be called the children of God. Yet so we are. (1 Jn. 3:1A)

Gospel:
“I am the good shepherd, and I know mine and mine know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I will lay down my life for the sheep.” (Jn. 10:14-15)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
There is something comforting about knowing that we are in someone’s care. Children can feel this most easily when surrounded by the embrace of a mother or father. All is well. Jesus is the Good Shepherd. We don’t have to figure out all of the complexities of life. All we need to do is allow Jesus to be the true shepherd of our lives: to point us in the right direction, lead us to the best pasture, and keep us safe from harm. So many things in the world can hurt us, and we can quickly find that we are on the road to despair. Keeping focused on Jesus, remaining close to him, allows us to develop the gifts and talents God has given us and discover the key to true happiness. Jesus welcomes me with all of my doubts and fears, limitations and sins.

“What did not lie in my plan lay in God’s plan … from God’s perspective—nothing is accidental.” ~St. Edith Stein

World Day of Prayer for Vocations:
On April 22 the Church throughout the world prays for vocations. Will you make a special effort to ask the Lord for more vocations to the priesthood and religious life? Pray for the priests who have ministered to you throughout your life, both living and dead. Keep your parish priests in your prayers throughout the week. Encourage your children, grandchildren, or other young people to consider a vocation as a priest or religious brother or sister.

Third Sunday of Easter ~ April 15, 2018

Year of the Eucharist: June 18, 2017–June 3, 2018

B047East3_nat_1_qtr_EN_4c

First reading:
“The author of life you put to death, but God raised him from the dead; of this we are witnesses.” (Acts 3:15)

Psalm:
Lord, let your face shine on us. (Ps. 4)

Second reading:
He is expiation for our sins, and not for our sins only but for those of the whole world. (1 Jn. 2:2)

Gospel:
He said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and in the prophets and psalms must be fulfilled. You are witnesses of these things.” (Lk. 24:44, 48)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Why are you troubled? Life can easily get the best of us. Anxiety, worry, doubt, and uneasiness are just some of the things that can trouble our hearts. Often we are troubled about temporal things. Sometimes our faith troubles us and we wonder where God may be. If we allow Jesus to open our minds so we can understand the Scriptures and the significance of his passion, death, and resurrection, we can begin to trust that God’s plan includes something much more than the current concern of our minds. Jesus can then become a light of revelation who helps us keep our lives in perspective and persevere.

Catholic Quotes—Words to Inspire the Faithful:
“Aspire not to have more, but to be more.” ~Oscar Romero

Second Sunday of Easter (Sunday of Divine Mercy) ~ April 8, 2018

Year of the Eucharist: June 18, 2017 – June 3, 2018

B044East2_nat_1_qtr_EN_4c

First reading:
With great power the apostles bore witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great favor was accorded them all. (Acts 4:33)

Psalm:
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, his love is everlasting. (Ps. 118)

Second reading:
Who indeed is the victor over the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? (1 Jn. 5:5)

Gospel:
Thomas answered and said to him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.” (Jn. 20:28-29)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
What does it take to believe that something is real? We live in an age of computer technology complete with things like Photoshop and other programs that can enhance photographs, create realistic images, and mimic artistic renderings. When looking at a picture of something, we find ourselves wondering if what we are seeing is real or just the result of technological creativity. Early believers came to believe because of what they witnessed in these new communities of faith. They saw people authentically living out Jesus’ command to love and to show mercy. What do people witness when they see us in action?

Catholic Quotes—Words to Inspire the Faithful:
“The greatest attribute of God is love and mercy.” ~St. Faustina Kowalska

Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord ~ April 1, 2018

Year of the Eucharist June 18, 2017–June 3, 2018

2ResurrectionofTheLord_4c

First reading:
“We are witnesses of all that he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree. This man God raised on the third day.” (Acts 10: 39–40A)

Psalm:
This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad. (Ps. 118)

Second reading:
Brothers and sisters: If then you were raised with Christ, seek what is above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. (Col. 3:1)

Gospel:
He said to them, “Do not be amazed! You seek Jesus of Nazareth, the crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Behold the place where they laid him.” (Mk. 16:6)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Christ is risen indeed! We have arrived at the penultimate feast on the Church’s calendar, the cause of our joy and our hope. Life has defeated death. Sorrow and suffering do not have the last say. In the resurrection of Jesus we see many reasons to rejoice. Not only has Jesus conquered the specter of visible death, but he restores to us graced life. On Holy Saturday, Jesus descended to the dead and delivered the just souls into heavenly paradise. What are our own Saturday tombs? Jesus has the power to open them all. That is our invitation, this day most of all. May resurrection joy fill your heart, your family, your workplace, and your community. Happy Easter!

Happy Easter:
The Lord has indeed risen, alleluia! Glory and kingship be his forever and ever. May this promise always be a source of hope and strength in times of trouble. Rejoice and be glad.

Easter Sunday Offering:
It is traditional that the Easter collection is one of those special times of year when parishioners make a more than usual offering to their parish in appreciation for the ministries and service provided in the parish. Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord ~ March 25, 2018

Year of the Eucharist June 18, 2017–June 3, 2018

B037Palm_trad_2_qtr_EN_4c

Processional Gospel:
Those preceding him as well as those following kept crying out: “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” (Mk. 11:9-10)

First reading:
The Lord GOD is my help, therefore I am not disgraced. (Is. 50:7A)

Psalm:
You, O Lord, be not far from me; O my help, hasten to aid me. (Ps. 22)

Second reading:
Christ Jesus, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God something to be grasped. Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness.” (Phil. 2:6-7A)

Gospel: “Truly this man was the Son of God.” (Mk 16:39B)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Today some of the most poignant themes of human life come into clear central focus: the feeling of being praised and honored, fear, anxiety, betrayal, despair, doubt, uncertainty, trust, hope, sadness, separation, suffering, death, determination, and courage. These are the emotions and realities that every human being wrestles with often. Jesus, the Son of God, encounters them all. As we journey through life, we have to confront the existential meaning of each of these things. How do they fit into the bigger picture? Jesus shows us most clearly that even those things we fear the most lose their power when we discover that we are being led to new life. Suffering is redemptive. Sin and death give way to grace and life and God’s unconditional love conquers all. May we see in Jesus’s Way of the Cross the path of truth we all must follow.

This Friday is Good Friday. It is a day of fast and abstinence. Catholics over 14 years of age are to abstain from eating meat and those between the ages of 18 and 59 are to have one full meal—two other smaller meals may be taken during the day that do not equal the full meal in quantity.

Pope Francis has asked our parish to support the Pontifical Good Friday Collection, which helps Christians in the Holy Land. Your support helps the church minister in parishes, provide Catholic schools, and offer religious education. The Good Friday collection also helps to preserve the sacred shrines. The wars, unrest, and instability have been especially hard on Christians. In these times of crisis, the Good Friday collection provides humanitarian aid to refugees. When you contribute to the Pontifical Good Friday collection, you become an instrument of peace and join with Catholics around the world in solidarity with the Church in the Holy Land. For more information about Christians in the Holy Land, visit www.myfranciscan.org/good-friday.

Easter Duty:
“All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year. The precept must be fulfilled during the Easter season unless it is fulfilled for a just cause at some other time during the year.” (Church Law #920) In reference to this law the Easter season is considered from the First Sunday of Lent until Trinity Sunday (this year May 27).

Food Pantry Volunteers Needed:

Fifth Sunday of Lent ~ March 18, 2018

Year of the Eucharist June 18, 2017–June 3, 2018

B035Lent5_nat_1_qtr_EN_4c

First reading:
I will place my law within them and write it upon their hearts; I will be their God, and they shall be my people. (Jeremiah 31:33B)

Psalm:
A clean heart create for me, O God, and a steadfast spirit renew within me. (Ps. 51)

Second reading:
Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered. (Heb. 5:8)

Gospel:
Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Amen, amen, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit.” (Jn. 12:23-24)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
We all fear losing that which is familiar. We fear dying. When our securities and familiarities are threatened, the anxiety of uncertainty can lead us into fear and despair. We have difficulty believing that new life comes from death. This is the basis of what it means to hope. There are no dead ends or final endings with God. Through his passion and death, Jesus opens up the possibility for new life and new beginnings for all believers. “Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit.” As our journey of Lent hastens to an end, the mystery of Christ’s passion and death come before us to teach us valuable lessons both for this life and the next.
