Cemetery Financial Help Needed:
This weekend, November 5 and 6, the basket will be passed soliciting offerings to help support the parish cemeteries, St. James the Apostle in Trumansburg and Holy Cross in Ovid. Expenses at both locations far exceed the yearly income (income is derived primarily from the sale of graves) and, as a result, the cemetery savings are being depleted at a fast rate. We ask your help to keep our church cemeteries solvent and in good order. Thank you.

2016/2017 Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA):
The theme for this year’s CMA campaign is “Raised in Christ.” The CMA affords each of us an opportunity to support the larger Church so that it can meet real needs throughout the Diocese. Your support enables the Church to be responsive and caring. Every gift is needed and important! Pledge forms, which can be put in the collection or mailed directly to the Diocese, are also available in the back of the church in case you have misplaced the one mailed to your home. The goal for The Parish of Mary, Mother of Mercy is $29,855 and thus far $15,904 has been pledged by parishioners. Making a pledge is primary what is pledged is secondary. Here is a link to a CMA informative video youtu.be/z1t-yW3Bu8k.

National Collection for the Archdiocese for Military Services:
The national collection will be taken up next weekend, November 12 and 13. The collection will help ensure that the archdiocese has the resources needed to provide pastoral care and the sacraments to Catholic men and women serving in the U.S. military, enrolled in the U.S. Military Academies, or undergoing treatment at any of the 153 Department of Veterans Affairs’ Medical Centers. The National Collection for the Archdiocese for Military Services will also help ensure that the vocations and co-sponsored seminarian programs have the resources needed to continue to provide priests for home dioceses as well as to replace the increasing number of chaplains forced to retire due to age restrictions or health reasons. Please visit www.milarch.org/nationalcollection for additional information. Thank you for your prayers and support for the mission and ministry of the Archdiocese for Military Services.

Religion Education / Formation Parent Make-up Meetings:

Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy:2015 Year of Mercy logo
The origin of the Christian Jubilee goes back to Old Testament times. The Law of Moses prescribed a special year for the Jewish people to make restitution for wrongs committed, to forgive debts owed, and set slaves free. A Jubilee is a year of reconciliation between adversaries. It is a time of solidarity, hope, justice and commitment to serve God with joy and in peace with our brothers and sisters. The guiding principle of  the year: “Be merciful just as your Father is merciful.

World Mission Sunday this Sunday:
In announcing his decision to declare a Holy Year of Mercy, Pope Francis said, “Dear brothers and sisters, I have often thought about how the Church might make clear its mission of being a witness to mercy.” Supporting the young churches throughout the world with your prayers and generous gifts is indeed a merciful witness of this mission. The collection today will help missionaries offer the poor of these areas practical help as they share the mercy of God. It will ensure the development of local dioceses, and support the work of priests, religious and lay leaders who serve those on the margins and in most need. Extend your merciful witness to the whole world through your gift in today’s collection for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith.

Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy:2015 Year of Mercy logo

The Law of Moses prescribed a special year for the Jewish people to make restitution for wrongs committed, to forgive debts owed, and set slaves free. In the Roman Catholic tradition, a Holy Year or Jubilee is a great religious event, for the forgiveness of sins and the punishment due to sin. A Jubilee is a year of reconciliation between adversaries. It is a time of solidarity, hope, justice and commitment to serve God with joy and in peace with our brothers and sisters. The guiding principle of  the year: “Be merciful just as your Father is merciful.

The picnic was held last Sunday at the St. Fidelis Friary Boat House, Interlaken. It was a beautiful day and a beautiful location. Many parishioners were in attendance—more than in the past. A special “thank you” to Jacqueline Newhart who planned and organized the event. A “thank you” to Michelle and Tony Humulock who assisted Jacqueline. A “thank you” also to all who attended and provided an abundance of good food. A great event!

Catholic Campaign For Human Development (CCHD):
This collection this weekend provides funding for groups that make lasting change and uplift the poor in the United States. CCHD’s grants improve education, support economic development, and create affordable housing in low-income neighborhoods. In Tompkins County, CCHD funded the start-up of the Tompkins County Workers’ Center, which has served thousands of low wage workers, helping them to recoup wages stolen from them and to address bullying and other unfair treatment in the workplace. Help continue to defend human dignity and build communities of solidarity. Please give to CCHD collection.

Parish Mission:
All parishioners and others, please make plans to attend this mini spiritual retreat. It will be held at St. James the Apostle on the Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday evenings of October 3, 4, and 5 at 7:00 p.m. Rev. William H. Winters, OFM Cap, will be the presenter. Fr. Bill was pastor of Holy Cross and St. Francis Solanus from 2002–2008. During this Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, Fr. Saturday Vigil Mass:
A “thank you” to musicians and singers from the three churches who have volunteered to provide music for the Mass at 5:00 p.m. on Saturdays at St. James. You are appreciated and rejoiced in. The volunteers are temporarily present to foster involvement in the music ministry and invite any parishioner who plays an instrument or sings to join them for practice before Mass at 4:00 p.m.

The Worship Committee of the parish is pleased to announce a Ministry Fair to be held on Saturday and Sunday, October 1–2, at Holy Cross, St. Francis Solanus, and St. James the Apostle. The Ministry Fair will address the needs and encourage parishioners to consider a call to be a liturgical minister, that is, to be an usher, altar server, musician, cantor, lector, extraordinary minister of Holy Communion, etc. By sharing of one’s gifts and time the parishioners of Mary, Mother of Mercy enrich worship and actively engage with members of our congregation and community. Volunteers from various ministries will be available after Mass on October 1–2 to give more information about the current needs of the parish. We invite you to sign up for the ministry that best suits your talents.

They meet each Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Jacksonville United Methodist Church, 1869 Trumansburg Road. Alice Ploss, director, has wide experience leading choral musicians of all ages. New members who like to sing are welcome, regardless of formal experience. The fee is $40 for adults and $25 for students. An optional extra $20 would help to purchase music. Please call 387-5232 with any questions.
