Excerpts from the Lectionary for Mass ©2001, 1998, 1970 CCD. The English translation of Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Sometimes, like the Samaritan woman, we can scarcely believe that God would meet us here in this fallen world. The truth of what he speaks and the beauty of what he proclaims is like a well of spring water in a dry desert. Do we dare accept the gift?

If we do, as Christians, we are called to follow the example of this Samaritan woman—to rush out, and proclaim what we have seen, that by our testimony and our belief, others may know Christ.

Thank You:
Our parish has received a thank you note from a parishioner regarding our card ministry: “As a thankful recipient of your monthly communications, I wanted to tell you how much your cards and notes are appreciated. It means a lot to me to know I am being thought of by others. While I can’t get to church these days, your correspondence enables me to feel like I am an important member of the parish community. God bless each of you who participate in this important ministry.”

St. Patrick’s Day and Abstinence:
The Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence, that is, meatless days. This Lenten practice affects Catholics over the age of 14.
This year, the Feast Day of St. Patrick, March 17, 2023, falls on a Friday. Bishop Matano has granted a dispensation from abstinence to all the faithful in the Diocese of Rochester that we might commemorate this feast day.

Lenten Reminders:

  • The season of Lent runs from Ash Wednesday (February 22) until the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday (April 6).
  • “Alleluia” is not sung or said from the beginning of Lent until the Easter Vigil.
  • During Lent the altar is not to be decorated with flowers.
  • Musical instruments may be played only to give necessary support to the singing.
  • The readings for the Lenten Masses have been chosen in relation to the themes of baptismal renewal and conversion.
  • The Easter celebration is: Holy Thursday, Good Friday & Holy Saturday – the Easter Triduum (Three Days of Easter).
  • During the Season of Lent, the Church urges all the faithful to reflect a spirit of prayer, penance (conversion), and charity.

Easter Duty:
(Church Law #920) All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year. The precept must be fulfilled during the Easter season unless it is fulfilled for a just cause at some other time during the year. In reference to this law the Easter season is considered from the First Sunday of Lent until Trinity Sunday (this year June 4).

Reception of Ashes on Ash Wednesday:
On Ash Wednesday, February 22, ashes will be distributed:

  • 12:00 p.m. Ash Wednesday Service, Holy Cross, Ovid
  • 7:00 p.m. Ash Wednesday Service, St. James the Apostle, Trumansburg

Who May Receive Ashes:
Baptized individuals who have reached the age of reason may receive ashes. Babies and young children who have not yet received the Sacrament of Penance should not be presented to receive ashes. Ashes are intended for those who are capable of personal sin. The keeping of Ash Wednesday is for leading the baptized members of the Church to repentance and renewal of baptismal promises at Easter.

Ashes and the Word of God:
As with all material things that are used as religious symbols, the symbolism of ashes is complex. In themselves, ashes have little meaning. But received in light of God’s revealing Word, ashes can become for Christians the biblical symbol they are intended to be – a sign of our desire to turn back to God. It is for this reason that the Church has placed the reception of ashes within the framework of the reading of Scripture. Ashes are reminders of mortality and the fleetingness of life. God’s Word reminds us that it is not the death of the body, but rather the death of the soul that is to be feared. Through the Scripture readings, God calls us to turn to Him with our whole heart and be faithful to the gospel again. In the light of these readings the reception of ashes becomes for us the symbol of hearts that desire to turn to God, a God who is “gracious and merciful, rich in kindness and relenting in punishment.”

Second Collection – Next Weekend:
The Black, Native American, and Hispanic Mission collection is to be taken up next week. It exists to help local African American, Native American, and Hispanic diocesan communities throughout the United States spread the Good News of Jesus Christ and respond to real and pressing needs on the ground. Your help is appreciated.

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket.” (Mt. 5:14-15)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
It’s hard to shine the light of truth in a world that so often prefers darkness. But God has built his city on a hill, not a valley. His glory, by definition, exists to be proclaimed, as salt exists to give flavor.

Word of God Sunday—Today:
In an Apostolic letter, Pope Francis declared that “the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time is to be devoted to the celebration, study and dissemination of the Word of God,” and invites us to approach it with solemnity.  He also states that the celebration has “ecumenical value, since the Scriptures point out, for those who listen, the path to authentic and firm unity.”

Pope Francis concludes his letter saying God’s Word “has the power to open our eyes and to enable us to renounce a stifling and barren individualism and instead to embark on a new path of sharing and solidarity.”

“SouperBowl” Sunday—February 12:
SouperBowl Sunday is a national ecclesiastical event. It draws attention to those experiencing the need for food in our communities. All food items gathered and funds raised in our parish go to the local food pantries located in Interlaken, Ovid, and Trumansburg.

Non-perishable food items or personal care items can be brought to our churches any time that you are able to do so. On February 12, a basket will be in the back of the churches for any monetary donations that you might wish to make; any checks written should be made out to the Parish of Mary, Mother of Mercy with the notation “Food Pantry” in the memo line. Thank you.

Thank You from Birthright:
Our parish has received a note of thanks for the donations to Birthright left at St. James the Apostle during Advent: “Birthright of Ithaca would like to thank you all for the many wonderful donations to our organization through the Giving Tree. There were many, many items that many families are already using to keep their little ones warm and safe.  Many children have what they need because a group of people joined together to show how much they care. Sometimes it DOES ‘take a village to raise a child’. Thank you all for being a part of the village of Birthright.  May God bless you all as you have blessed us.”

Thank You from our Local Food Pantries:
Our parish has received notes of gratitude from both the Interlaken Food Pantry and the Trumansburg Food Pantry.

The Interlaken Food Pantry writes, “Thank you for your donation to the Interlaken Food Pantry. This is much appreciated and will help many.”

The Trumansburg Food Pantry expressed their gratitude for the $88.00 donation by saying, “We are grateful for the support from such a caring community. Your Kindness enables us to purchase food and personal care items for the families who benefit from our bi-monthly distributions.”

2022-2023 Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA):

The offerings of gold, frankincense and myrrh were carried by the magi over many miles of hard travel to be laid at the feet of Jesus. What gifts do we bear through the journey of life to lay at the feet of the King? Do we protect them as we should?
