October 23, 2022 ~ Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading:
The prayer of the lowly pierces the clouds; it does not rest till it reaches its goal, nor will it withdraw till the Most High responds. (Sir. 35:21)

Psalm:
The Lord hears the cry of the poor. (Ps. 34)

Second Reading:
From now on the crown of righteousness awaits me, which the Lord, the just judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me, but to all who have longed for his appearance. (2 Tm. 4:8)

Gospel:
“For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” (Lk. 18:14)

Excerpts from the Lectionary for Mass ©2001, 1998, 1970 CCD. The English translation of Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
To be humble means to see ourselves as we are. It comes with the recognition that we are never perfect, better than another, or free of sin. The humble person knows their faults and failings as well as their successes and triumphs. They also realize that they are nothing without God, especially God’s mercy. The humble one knows who they are, who they can be, and how they have fallen short. Being desperately in love with God, they know how they have sometimes given in to their desires rather than God’s will, almost with a sense of embarrassment. Being justified in our relationship with God is not about a list of the good things we do and the bad things we don’t. We are vindicated when we realize how totally dependent we are upon God’s gratuitous, abundant, and unconditional love. It is a gift we often take for granted and is often unappreciated.

October 16, 2022 ~ Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Second Reading:

Gospel:
“Will not God then secure the rights of his chosen ones who call out to him day and night?” (Lk. 18:7)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Does God finally answer our persistent prayers to stop us from bothering Him? The thought that persistent prayer can be disturbing or upsetting to God does not ring true with the images of God as compassionate, understanding, merciful, and loving that our tradition conveys. Yet, Jesus tells his disciples to “pray always without becoming weary.” Maybe the type of prayer necessary to endure the trials of discipleship and the challenges and criticisms of Christian teaching goes beyond words. We need to tend to the realities of human life. The persistent prayer of which Jesus speaks is the prayer of the heart. This contemplative, silent, loving prayer gives us the vision to see God in all things, especially in each human soul. Desiring God alone and not only what we want God to do for us places this love relationship foremost in our minds, hearts, and souls. As we breathe in and exhale out, the Divine Life flows. This alone can provide the strength of endurance to confront anything contrary to the truth of faith.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Expressing gratitude is a sign of a loving heart. When we have received a gracious gesture, the appreciation experienced forms a bond between the giver and receiver. This can only happen when abundance and kind gestures are seen as gifts and not something to which we are entitled. The power of gratitude is more profound when we realize all that we are and all we are given do not have a human source but are of God. Walking around believing that our glass is only half full leaves us always wanting more. We are never satisfied. We become nothing more than entitled pursuers of whatever we can get. Instead, the one who is eager to count their blessings and appreciate the wonder and beauty of the gift of life itself is at peace. Before they take another step or venture off on another journey, they bow in gratitude to the presence of God himself. They are most keenly aware that all would cease to be without God.

Gospel:
“If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.” (Lk. 17: 6)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Why does God allow evil and suffering to occur? Looking around at what is happening in the world, it is tempting to get angry with God for not actively intervening. Jesus walked among the suffering and evil of his day. While he healed some things, he simply sat with the sinner, challenged the leaders, and spoke against injustice. Jesus spoke of God’s kingdom and his vision for humanity. But he made it very clear that it is our responsibility to realize this vision. The disciples saw how Jesus lived and dealt with the day’s circumstances. They wanted that same faith and determination. They wanted his fortitude and courage. Mostly, they wanted Jesus’ confidence and patience that God’s vision would someday be fulfilled. In the meantime, waiting in joyful hope, we become servants who do what is necessary: love, repent of our sin, show mercy, be compassionate and fight injustice. Willingly giving witness to our faith, we expect nothing in return.

St. Francis of Assisi:
The Church celebrates on Tuesday, October 4, the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi. He was born in 1181 and died in 1226. His conversion to our heavenly Father inspired him to imitate Jesus, and he was acclaimed as a most Christ like person, even to receiving the gift of having the five wounds of Jesus imprinted on his body. He was the founder of three religious orders: the Friars Minor, the Poor Clare’s and the Secular Franciscan. The whole church rejoices in the inspiration given by his way of life which is the gospel life. There will be one Mass, the daily 8:30 a.m. Mass at St. Francis Solanus Church in celebration of his feast day.

September 25, 2022 ~ Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading:
Therefore, now they shall be the first to go into exile, and their wanton revelry shall be done away with. (1 Kgs. 19:7)

Psalm:
Praise the Lord, my soul! (Ps. 146)
Or
Alleluia.

Second Reading:
I charge you before God, who gives life to all things, and before Christ Jesus, who gave testimony under Pontius Pilate for the noble confession, to keep the commandment without stain or reproach until the appearance of our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Tm. 6: 13-14)

Gospel:
“My child, remember that you received what was good during your lifetime while Lazarus likewise received what was bad; but now he is comforted here, whereas you are tormented.” (Lk. 16: 25)

We can be blindly arrogant and selfish. For some, the lens through which we view life is the lens of self-benefit. Having this myopic vision, the plight and station of others are off our radar and of no genuine concern. Being self-sufficient and resilient, we can wonder if all of this “God-talk” is for real. If we believe we are solely responsible for our destiny and well-being, what place is there for God? Tangible faith requires an actual change of heart, a conversion. It involves walking a courageous journey of transformation that consists of a shift in priorities and focus. Humility becomes the order of the day. An authentic loving relationship with God blossoms within a person’s soul. God becomes an ever-faithful companion. Whether this faith is stumbled upon because of messages heard from prophets in our midst or from someone coming back from the dead, the journey is the same. Faith has to be owned and become something permanent. If we are unwilling to lose the arrogance, any truth-filled message will fall on deaf ears.

Death Penalty Abolition:
Jesus was not the first to be sentenced to death, tortured and executed by the Roman occupiers of his homeland. Jesus is forever identified with those who have been sentenced to death and executed under state authority. Today, 108 countries have abolished the death penalty. If Jesus lived in one of these countries today, he would not face a death penalty, no matter what crime he was alleged to have committed. Pope Francis is inviting the whole Church to pray for the global abolition of the death penalty throughout the month of September. When praying please remember this invitation and keep the intention in mind.

Hear this, you who trample upon the needy and destroy the poor of the land! (Am. 8:4)

Psalm:
Praise the Lord who lifts up the poor. (Ps. 113)
Or
Alleluia.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Human beings are often very clever when managing money and making a profit. Sometimes, we place so much of our sense of security in money that we lower ourselves to deceit and fraud. Our need to produce a profit can easily lead to economic injustice and exploitation. Money is necessary to conduct the business of our lives. However, it cannot become the god we serve. Being smart, savvy, and creative with financial wealth can be good. Being smart, savvy, and creative with living out our relationship with God is even better. Our hearts have to find a home somewhere. Jesus reminds us of a choice we must make: God or mammon. We need to be cautious about “selling our souls” to what cannot fully satisfy us and falling into the traps of lust, gluttony, pride, and greed. Instead, we can better direct our efforts and our talents to the management of God’s kingdom, which in the end is the only thing that matters. Any ideas on how we can use the talents and skills God gave us to make for a better world?

Parish Feast Day Celebration and Picnic:
The celebration took place last Sunday, September 11. It was a rainy day. However, all were dry under the tent that was beautifully decorated with flower arrangements on every table. The food was plentiful and delicious. About 90 parishioners were present. Thank you to the Fellowship Committee of the Parish Council: Martha Wooledge, Scott Hamula, Jacqueline Leidenfrost and Russ Wedemeyer (who was most present in the set up of the tent, tables and chairs and the clean-up – the first to arrive and the last to leave). A special “Thanks” to Hollie Kroening for being part of the planning and offering her skills and equipment in the set-up and serving of food and drink. Thanks to all who came to the celebration and for the “dishes-to-pass”. It was a grand event.

Catholic Campaign for Human Development:
Please be generous in this week’s special collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. In the United States, more than 11% of the population lives in poverty. With this collection, you support programs that address the root causes of poverty and provide a sustainable future for those struggling across the country. In addition, 25% of the funds we collect remain in our diocese to fund local antipoverty projects. Please prayerfully consider how you can support this collection and support those working on the margins. More information about the Catholic Campaign for Human Development can be found at www.usccb.org/cchd.

2022-2023 Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA):
Nest week the Diocese is launching the 2022-2023 Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA). The purpose and necessity for the CMA is unchanged after 40 years. We are responsible for continuing the Church’s mission through good times and bad – through prosperous times and lean times. People are still poor, hungry, in need of pastoral care, education and employment. The faithful are in need of ministry and a vibrant parish life. Our youth and young adults are yearning to learn and grow in their relationship with Christ. The Church and our Diocese are in need of trained and educated seminarians, deacons, and pastoral leaders to lead our Church into the future. We cannot close our eyes to these needs. Starting next weekend, we will have more information to share with you about this year’s appeal. The first mailing for the Appeal was sent out the week, September 15. The given goal for our parish is $31,000.

September 11, 2022 ~ Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading:
So the LORD relented in the punishment he had threatened to inflict on his people. (Ex. 32:14)

Psalm:
I will rise and go to my father. (Ps. 51)

Second Reading:
This saying is trustworthy and deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. (1 Tm. 1:15)

Gospel:
“I tell you, in just the same way there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance.” (Lk. 15:7)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
It is easy to worship things other than God. Our perception of reality gets distorted as well as our understanding of truth. Ideologies and theories that find a popular reception are extolled when they are simply lies. Human beings easily get lost. God came to us in the person of Jesus Christ to rescue us from our sins and keep us where we need to be. But we have to realize that we are living in darkness before we can ask for light. We have to recognize that we are lost so that we can desire to be found. And, we have to know that we have sinned so that we can repent. God always patiently waits. God is delighted when one of His children chooses life over death and runs toward His unconditional Mercy. Let’s not be so stubborn and stiff-necked that we fail to recognize that we may have wandered into the wrong pasture.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
“Stand up straight and don’t slouch!” Many a child has heard these words bellowed from their mother’s lips. We need the perspective of others to help us understand when we are not walking as straight as we could be. God sends us the Holy Spirit to correct and guide us so that our paths through life can be straight. Without this assistance, how we see and understand ourselves and the world around us is incomplete. We will also lack the virtue of fortitude. It takes courage to listen to the Holy Spirit and devote ourselves to the task of discipleship. We have to put aside things that the world says are necessary and follow a path placed before us by Jesus Christ. Jesus is asking us to follow him. We must consider what we have to do to be free enough to do so. God needs us to show the world a complete picture of what life is meant to be, correct its vision and tell it to stand up straight!

August 28, 2022 ~ Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading:
Humble yourself the more, the greater you are, and you will find favor with God. (Sir. 7:18)

Psalm:
God, in your goodness, you have made a home for the poor. (Ps. 68)

Second Reading:
You have approached Mount Zion and the city of the living God. (Heb. 12:22)

Gospel:
“For every one who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” (Lk.14:11)

“Humble yourself the more, the greater you are.” These words from Sirach are packed with wisdom. Who we become, and the success we achieve, is due not only to our own merits but also to God’s grace. Without God, we cease to be. This is a simple fact. If we ever feel entitled to honor, superior treatment, or privileges, then we are deluding ourselves. The person who truly understands and is responsible for their well-being and success will quickly become a servant of others. We tend to forget how important service is. Being generous and kind, especially to those who cannot repay us, is the hallmark of the Christian life. Are we willing to put ourselves last? An easy way to seek an answer is to determine how much value you place on sitting in the seat you occupy today or the space you choose to park your car. Would you offer these to someone else?

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Discipline is necessary for us to focus our attention and develop and refine our skills. A disciplined person has integrity and can make difficult but necessary choices. Most people do not like discipline, especially children. When we have to rise above our impulses and desires and do something challenging, it can appear as a punishment. The struggles of living a good and effective Christian life, especially when we actively choose virtue over vice, are allowed by God and necessary for reaching spiritual maturity. God invites us to share in His Kingdom. Hearing and accepting that invitation requires an active, conscious decision on our part. Reforming our lives and changing how we do things does not come easily. But it is precisely what is necessary for us to enter through the narrow gate that leads to life. Discipline is essential if we are going to discover our desire for union with our Creator and live in God’s house. In this way, we will not risk finding the door locked when we need it to be open.
