St. Josemaria Escriva tell us, “To live according to the Holy Spirit means to live by faith and hope and charity. To allow God to take possession of our lives and to change our hearts, to make us resemble him more and more.” Today we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit given freely by God to us. The Holy Spirit is the very breath of God and the true source of our power and strength. When we accept that God is the beginning and the end of all things, we open ourselves to receiving this powerful presence. The Holy Spirit alone is the one who teaches us how to pray, who stirs us to lift our eyes to heaven in search of our Creator and opens them to recognize the wonderful gifts of faith, hope, and love God gives us. The Holy Spirit is the one who teaches us how to understand ourselves, God, others, and the world. When we allow God’s Own breath to truly take possession of us, we realize that we are meant to become like God and know Him as He really is. Thank you:
For the last three weekend Masses in May, the Rosary was prayed before Mass for the end of wars, especially in the Ukraine. We thank those who led the rosary and those who arrived fifteen minutes early to join in the prayer. May we all continue to pray the rosary for peace through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Pentecost Brunch:
The brunch will take place this Sunday, June 5, following the 10:30 a.m. Mass at Holy Cross Rectory. As in past years it is a potluck brunch held on Pentecost Sunday where the attendees bring a dish to the meal. Everyone is welcome to this grand parish event.

Funerals:
Thomas W. Major, Sr., age 84, died May 13, 2022. A funeral Mass was held at St. James the Apostle Church on May 21.

Next Weekend – Second Collection:
Through websites, social networks, television, radio, and print, the Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC) helps the Church spread the Gospel message through the media locally and nationally. Half of all donations to the CCC collected in your diocese stay in your diocese to support your local communications needs, such as radio and television programming and diocesan publications.

Food, Faith and Fun:
A gift has been given to the parish for a gathering of people between the ages of 21 and 45. The gathering will take place this Sunday, June 5, at the St. Fidelis Friary Boathouse, 7790 County Road 153, Interlaken, beginning at 5:00 p.m. with a sit-down dinner. After the meal there will be a brief faith presentation and sharing followed by a planned activity.

Food Donations Needed:
On the second Sunday of each month, non-perishable food items will be received at St. James the Apostle Church and placed on a table in front of the Blessed Mother statue. They will be donated to the Trumansburg Food Pantry. Monetary donations are also welcome. Please make checks out to Mary, Mother of Mercy with “food pantry” in the memo line. New Feast Day in the Church:
Pope Francis has decreed a new feast day in the Church – Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church. It was added to the universal liturgical calendar to be celebrated on the Monday after the Solemnity of Pentecost. This year, the obligatory Memorial will be this Monday, June 6, 2022.

Regarding the Burial of the Deceased:
In 1963, an instruction was issued from Rome that “all necessary measures must be taken to preserve the practice of reverently burying the faithful departed”, adding however that cremation is not opposed … to the Christian religion” and that no longer should the Sacraments and funeral rites be denied to those who have asked that they be cremated. This directive was incorporated into the Code of Canon Law (1983) and the Code of Canons of Oriental Churches (1990). Following the most ancient Christian tradition, the Church insistently recommends that the bodies of the deceased be buried in cemeteries or other sacred places because this shows a greater esteem towards the deceased. When cremation of the body has been chosen, the ashes of the faithful must be laid to rest in a sacred place, that is in a cemetery or, in certain cases, in a church or an area, which has been set aside for this purpose. The reservation of the ashes of the departed in a sacred place ensures that they are not excluded from the prayers and remembrance of their family or the Christian community. It prevents the faithful departed from being forgotten, or their remains from being shown a lack of respect. For the reasons given above, the conservation of the ashes of the departed in a domestic residence is not permitted. The ashes may not be divided among various family members. It is not permitted to scatter the ashes of the faithful departed in the air, on land, at sea or in some other ways, nor be preserved in mementos, pieces of jewelry or other objects. Regarding Burial of the Deceased and the Conservation of Ashes was issued by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, August 15, 2016. Pending U.S. Supreme Court Decision:
The U.S. has never “settled down” and accepted Roe v. Wade. A “constitutional right” to abortion remains highly contested. This is evidenced not only by the number of proposed and enacted laws seeking to restrict it, but also by the enormous number of grassroots groups and activists working to overturn it. For something to be a “fundamental constitutional right,” it must be deeply embedded in the vast majority of Americans’ understanding of what freedom means. If half of the states want to ban abortion, it was never part of the American fabric in the first place.

Camp Stella Maris:
Each year, Camp Stella Maris sends hundreds of kids to camp through the Charles M. Bayer Campership Program. Campership awards are extended to families who may not have the opportunity to send their children to camp. Camp Stella Maris awards more than $150,000 to campers-in-need annually. Easter Duty:
All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year. The precept must be fulfilled during the Easter Season unless it is fulfilled for a just cause at some other time during the year. In reference to this law, the Easter season is considered from the First Sunday of Lent until Trinity Sunday (this year June 12) Canon #920

Family Hope Center:
The Family Hope Center has two locations: one in Geneva and a satellite location in Ovid in the Holy Cross Church Rectory. Family Hope Center fights for life by valuing life above all else. It means offering support through free pregnancy tests, a limited ultrasound referral, parenting and life skills classes, bible studies, material aid such as diapers and clothing, and through our forgiven and set free post abortion study. Mass Intention Requests:
Parishioners requesting a Mass intention for a particular date and time can do so by completing the “Mass Intentions Request Form” located in the foyers of the churches. Mass intentions may also be requested by phoning the parish office.

Sanctuary Lamp:
In Catholic Churches, a candle is always lit to indicate that the Blessed Sacrament is present in the church. This candle is called the “sanctuary lamp.” Every week the candle or oil is renewed. In many churches, people donate to the church for the sanctuary lamp be lit for the week for the intention of the donor. This has been the custom at Holy Cross Church, Ovid and is now extended to St. James the Apostle and St. Francis Solanus Churches. In making the donation simply put on the envelope, “donation for the sanctuary lamp” and specify the week and, if so desired, your intention.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
We all have our ideas of who God is. We have to remember, however, that our ideas of God often do not capture who God really is. God is a wonderful mystery whose identity is inexhaustible. This makes life an exciting journey in search of belief, love, glory, and unity. Displaying all of the tenderness of a real love story, we hear from Jesus that God wants nothing more than for the world to believe. The same depth of affection given to Jesus, God the Father desires to share with us. Receiving this love gives the believer an even greater understanding of what gives us purpose and meaning. With God’s unconditional love as our anchor, we can endure the greatest of hardships knowing that we carry the hope of glory within us. Sharing in the same incredible eternal destiny and glory that God gave His Son, we can all be one just as Jesus and the Father are one. Why is understanding all of this important? Because given the myriad choices of what can possibly define us, we now have the primordial truth of who we are given to us by God. We know, beyond doubt, where to look for true happiness and where our lives will end.

Pending U.S. Supreme Court Decision:
Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization give the Supreme Court an opportunity to undo the grave injustice of 1973, when Roe V. Wade decided that a whole class of human beings, the preborn, are outside the protection of the law. Since that decision, more than 60 million innocent lives have been taken. If Roe is overturned, states will again be able to protect the lives of preborn children, and in doing so, also protect millions of women from the tragic consequences of abortion.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Everyone wants to experience peace. When we look to the world to provide this for us, we can easily get disappointed. We associate peace with an absence of war and conflict, good relationships between neighbors and coworkers, the achievement of success and even the absence of noise! While all of these are worthy endeavors, pursuing them exclusively as a path to experiencing peace sets us up for failure. When we look for peace outside of ourselves, it will never be found. True and lasting peace is something that comes from within and not something we can produce on our own or receive from others. Peace is discovered when we experience an inner wholeness and harmony. It is born of a sense of connectedness with a God who is larger and greater than ourselves, gifting us with His presence. It is the only the peace offered by the Risen Christ that can settle our hearts and calm our fears. Regardless of the degree of turmoil around us, this sense of completeness that Jesus gives anchors our boats and prevents us from sinking.

Parish Finance Council Meeting:
The Finance Council will meet on Thursday, May 26, at 11:00 a.m. at the Parish Center.

Parish Council Selection of New Members:

The names of the nominees are placed in a basket and the needed number of new members are drawn (selected) from the basket. 2021-2022 Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA):
Our parish has surpassed its assigned goal of $28,085. This was accomplished by 107 parish households who have pledged $32,300 to the CMA. Half of the amount over goal will be returned to the parish. The Appeal will continue until May 31. We are most appreciative to those who pledged to the Appeal and invite others to make a pledge to support the works of the Diocese and our parish. Pledge envelopes are available in the foyers of the church. Participation is primary, what is pledged is secondary. Every gift is appreciated greatly.

Social Ministry Conference – Open to all:
The annual Diocesan Social Ministry Conference will take place virtually on Wednesday May 25 from 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. over Zoom. The conference theme is the Laudato Si’ Action Platform, which calls all Catholics to take seriously our moral obligation to address environmental degradation and climate change. Through a variety of discussions and workshops we’ll learn about ways our families and parishes can embrace this mission and protect our common home. Pending U.S. Supreme Court Decision:
“If Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health overturns Roe v. Wade, doesn’t that mean women in the US will no longer be able to get abortions?” The answer is “no”. The decision to overturn Roe v. Wade would allow each state to decide which restrictions it will allow on abortion. In states such as California and Vermont, abortion will continue to be permitted at least up until 24 weeks (when evidence show that preborn babies feel pain).

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
The resurrected Christ gives us the strength to do things we can never have imagined. Life will often give us mountains to climb, and we wonder how we will find the energy, ability, and determination to forge ahead. But, with a good dosage of faith and a fervent life of prayer we find ourselves succeeding and ascending to heights that once frightened us. What we realize after we have reached the other side is that this hardship we once saw as an obstacle has become a vehicle for something better and greater. We are stronger. The same is true with the Gospel. The prospect of loving one another may seem idealistic or unobtainable. Yet, when we risk moving beyond just looking out for or helping each other to actually LOVING each other, miracles happen. There is something wonderful that occurs with love. We see people in ways we never saw before, understanding and appreciating each other’s journey. Love leads to reverence. Faith is strengthened and we move on to try again.

Funeral:
A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. James the Apostle Church for Joan Hogan, 86, on May 7, 2022. The burial was at St. James the Apostle Cemetery.

Our Call To Protect God’s Creation:
In his encyclical Laudato Si’, Pope Francis makes it clear that we have a moral obligation to care for the Earth. The Laudato Si’ Action Platform is a new initiative by the Holy See calling all sectors of the Church, including families, parishes, and schools to participate in this crucial work. Persons between the ages of 21 and 45:
Plans are underway for a gathering of this age group. The gathering will take place on Sunday, June 5, at the St. Fidelis Friary Boathouse, 7790 County Road 153, Interlaken, NY beginning at 5:00 p.m. with a meal. Elise Wright will be celebrating her First Communion this Sunday, May 15, 2022, at the 9:00 a.m. Mass. We thank all who have helped prepare Elise for this day.

Diocesan Missions Sunday – Second Collection:
Today is Diocesan Missions Sunday honoring the Sisters of St. Joseph in Brazil and the Sisters of Mercy in Chile. We are called to take part in the missionary work of the Church. We may not all have to move to another town or city to do so, but impelled by the Holy Spirit, each one of us is to move beyond our daily concerns, important as they are, to help others live in the faith that sustains us. Bishop Salvatore Matano calls us to a responsible sharing in the missionary works of the Diocese of Rochester. No diocese is truly a diocese unless it extends beyond its own borders and allows itself to be touched by the presence of other churches. May we share the gift of faith today by helping our missionary friends with our prayers and a generous gift.

Priests’ Convocation:
The priests in the Diocese of Rochester will be gathering with Bishop Matano in Horseheads, NY, Monday afternoon, May 16, until Wednesday late morning, May 18. This annual event has been postponed the past two years. The convocation is a spiritual, intellectual and social event. Both Fathers Bernard and Richard will be attending. On Tuesday and Wednesday (May 17 & 18) there will be no 8:30 a.m Mass. However, Brother Francisco will celebrate a Communion Service at 8:30 a.m. at St. Francis Solanus Church.

The Parish Council is a council to the pastor. It is not a governing body nor board. Through the Parish Council committees (Word, Worship, Witness and Fellowship), the members become aware of what is happening in the parish. Parish Council members are assigned to one of the committees after they give their preferences. From what is being done or proposed in the parish, the members offer advice to the pastor. The council can meet between 4–8 times a year, and the meetings are held at the Parish Center, Interlaken.

2021-2022 Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA):
Our parish has surpassed its assigned goal of $28,085. This was accomplished by 106 parish households who have pledged $32,250 to the CMA. Half of the amount over goal will be returned to the parish. The Appeal will continue until May 31. We are most appreciative to those who pledged to the Appeal and invite others to make a pledge to support the works of the Diocese and our parish. Pledge envelopes are available in the foyers of the church. Participation is primary, what is pledged is secondary. Every gift is appreciated greatly.

Pending U.S. Supreme Court Decision:
Between now and the end of June, the U.S. Supreme Court is expected to issue a ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. The case involves a law in Mississippi that bans most abortions after the baby reaches 15 weeks. Jackson Women’s Health, as the only abortion provider in the state of Mississippi, sued, saying that the law is in direct violation of Roe v. Wade. In response, Mississippi essentially asked the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade as bad law, and barring that, to at least allow states to limit pre-viability abortions. While it is impossible to speculate what will happen, it is a hope that the Supreme Court will allow states to once again limit or prohibit abortion. Regardless of what happens, there will be significant coverage in the media giving rise to people being affected in various ways. Breach of Trust:
The New York State Catholic Conference released the following statement on behalf of the NYS Bishops: “The leaking of an internal draft opinion of the Supreme Court is an egregious breach of trust, and an attack on the integrity of the Judicial Branch of government. When our highest court cannot operate free of political interference or intimidation, it serves a stark example that nothing is sacred anymore. While we fervently pray for legal protections of unborn children, we will not dignify the goals of the leaker by commenting on the contents of the draft document.”

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Do we hear and follow? Before we can welcome Jesus as the Good Shepherd, we have to hear his voice. God’s voice breaks into the dialogue of our lives in myriad ways, but we have to be attentive and receptive in order to hear it. It comes through the beauty of creation, the warmth and energy of love, the gift of compassion both received and given, the sacred miracle of life, and the orderly and purposeful design of things and in the truth found in God’s commandments. Once we see the wisdom behind the commandments and teachings God places before us and are attentive to listening for His direction, we can begin to take the necessary steps and follow Him. We are easily misled and there are many convincing “shepherds.” Only one is Good. It is only the Good Shepherd who can lead us away from the evils that can hurt us and bring us to the good. We may not always like where God asks us to go, and it may not be the path others prefer to take. But we have to follow it because we trust that our kind Shepherd will keep us safe.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
What prevents us from seeing the Lord? We are not used to seeing Jesus in the ordinary, everyday events of our lives. We expect some kind of startling, extraordinary revelation to occur that definitely and unmistakably sends a signal that God wants our attention. We don’t expect a visit from Jesus while we are having breakfast, doing the dishes, running after the kids, negotiating a deal at work, or taking a shower! Sometimes when God simply stands on the shore of our lives casually looking for us, we don’t recognize him. Did we ever stop and think that God is really and truly interested in the routine, run of the mill events of our lives? So, “what did you do today?” God may ask. Maybe we don’t think that God is concerned about such things, or we are so consumed with life’s demands that we give it little if any thought. Perhaps we are determined to achieve our own success, desire to control things ourselves or not really sure what God cares about. God is there. One day, out of the blue, God will get our attention and ask, “Do you love me?”

April 24, 2022 ~ Second Sunday of Easter / Divine Mercy Sunday

“I am the first and the last, the one who lives. Once I was dead, but now I am alive forever and ever.” (Rev. 1:17-18)

Gospel:
On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst. (Jn. 20:19)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Life is about to get very interesting for the disciples. Finding themselves questioning what happened to Jesus and whether he actually was raised from the dead, they are afraid and uncertain. In the midst of this fear, questioning, and uncertainty, Jesus decides to surprise them with a visit! This visit, complete with the gift of peace, fills the disciples with great excitement and joy. But their detailed testimony is not enough to convince their absent friend Thomas. He wants to see for himself. We struggle with belief as well. It is hard for some to give themselves over to the testimony of another. We want to see the resurrected Christ in person. God, through the gift of eyes of faith, gives us the ability to do precisely that: when we witness the healing that comes from forgiveness, the beauty that flows from love, the wonder of creation, the new life that comes after we fall, and the unique soul that lives behind each person’s life. Christ is risen. Life will get very interesting for us too, when we stop unbelieving and believe!

The three days of Easter, that is, Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Resurrection of the Lord, were wonderful celebrations in the parish made so by those who decorated the churches for the liturgies, ushers, musicians, song leaders, altar servers, lectors and Eucharistic ministers and of course by all the participants in those liturgies which includes those who were in attendance. You were all a blessing to the parish, and God bless you many times over for your presence.

Sunday of Divine Mercy- Second Sunday of Easter:
On Sunday April 24 at 3:00 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, 113 N. Geneva Street, Ithaca, NY, Deacon George Kozak will be leading a Divine Mercy Service with recitation of the Divine Mercy Chaplet, the Rosary and Adoration and Benediction. All are welcome.

First Communion Sunday:
Elise Wright will be celebrating her First Communion on Sunday, May 15, 2022, at the 9:00 a.m. Mass. We thank all who have helped prepare Elise for this day.

Parish Council Nominations:
The terms of five Parish Council members end this June. Parishioners interested in being on the Parish Council can now nominate themselves or be nominated by another parishioner. The selection of new Parish Council members for a three year term and the selection of three alternates for a one year term will take place on Sunday, May 29. Newly selected members will attend the June 9 Parish Council meeting. The term of membership begins July 1. There are no scheduled meetings in the summer. The Parish Council is a council to the pastor. It is not a governing body nor board. Through the Parish Council committees (Word, Worship, Witness and Fellowship), the members become aware of what is happening in the parish. Parish Council members are assigned to one of the committees after they give their preferences. From what is being done or proposed in the parish, the members offer advice to the pastor. The council can meet between 4–8 times a year and the meetings are held at the Parish Center, Interlaken. The last weekend of April, Parish Council nomination ballots will be available for the submission of nominees’ names. Parishioners, please consider being a Council member or nominating a parishioner. Blue Sunday:
The last Sunday in April is a day when churches take time in their service to pray for the victims of child abuse and for those who rescue them. There are over 3 million confirmed cases of child abuse in our nation annually. Of the 1,640 child deaths from child abuse most were under the age of 3. To end this violence, prayer is needed. Additional resources including videos and fact sheets are available online at www.bluesunday.org.

2021-2022 Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA):
Our parish has surpassed its assigned goal of $28,085. This was accomplished by 104 parish households who have pledged $28,650 to the CMA. Half of the amount over goal will be returned to the parish. The Appeal will continue until May 31. We are most appreciative to those who pledged to the Appeal and invite others to make a pledge to support the works of the Diocese and our parish. Pledge envelopes are available in the foyers of the church. Participation is primary, what is pledged is secondary. Every gift is appreciated greatly.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Alleluia, Christ is risen! What a glorious and holy day. The resurrection of Christ speaks of freedom, new life, restored faith and enduring, unconditional love. The huge stone, separating death and life, has been moved, allowing God’s radiant power to usher in eternal life. When we see the truth of Christ’s resurrection through eyes of love, we see the fullness of timeless beauty, truth, and wonder revealed. The emptiness of the tomb is filled with the eternity of love. We have many stones and boulders blocking the path to freedom, love, and joy. They are often too big for us to move, and they cripple us. We can take a leap of faith today and believe with all our heart, mind, and soul that there is much more than can be seen by the naked eye. There is something very holy, sacred, and eternal stirring within us. We want to live forever! Christ’s resurrection brings us joy and allows us to see ourselves as we are meant to be seen, as God’s children destined for glory!

Worldwide Marriage Encounter:

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Hailed one moment and rejected the next. This seems to be the pattern that repeats itself not only throughout history but in our own lives as well. Jesus wants to be triumphantly welcomed into our hearts with joy! And welcome him we do! Then come the times when we do exactly the opposite and we reject the teachings of the Gospel and turn our backs on God’s friendship. The one who at one time is a friend now becomes an enemy. Jesus understands our ambivalence. He lived it on the way to the cross. Understanding the full array of human emotion, God accepts us where we are. There is a great deal of drama on the road to Calvary. Our lives can be dramatic as well. In all of those whirlwind moments it can be difficult to find God’s presence and understand his will. We walk with Jesus this week seeking inspiration and hope, the essential keys needed to unlock the door to God’s presence in our lives.

Washing of the Feet Ritual:
This ritual takes place during the Mass of the Lord’s Supper at 7:00 p.m. at St. James the Apostle Church. We need 12 adult parishioners to volunteer to participate in this rite. There are sign-up sheets in the foyers of the Church.

Good Friday – Fast and Abstinence Day:
On Good Friday, Catholics 14 years of age and older abstain from eating meat. Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 fast, that is, they have one full meal, other meals not to equal the full meal.

Good Friday – Holy Land Collection:
This collection helps the Church in the Holy Land not only to support the sacred shrines but also to support parishes in the holy land as they provide faith formation programs and humanitarian aid in a place where there is unrest and instability especially hard on Christians. The Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confessions):
Besides the regularly scheduled time for Confession (Fridays, 6:30–7:30 p.m., at St. Francis Solanus Church), the Sacrament may be celebrated at 7–8 p.m. on Monday, April 11, at St. James the Apostle Church and Tuesday, April 12, at Holy Cross Church. These are wonderful opportunities to be shriven of one’s sins and the guilt attached to them and to be reconciled to God and his church. It is the Sacrament of Peace.

Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist completes one’s initiation into the Kingdom of God. Confirmation celebrates one’s faith and trust in Jesus and the commitment to imitate him in thought and deed. The parish rejoices in our newly fully initiated Christians.

Seder Meal:

I consider everything as a loss because of the supreme good of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have accepted the loss of all things (Phil. 3:8)

Gospel:
“Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” (Jn. 8:7)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Mercy makes us attentive to the voice of truth. We do not know what ever happened to the woman caught in adultery, after her encounter with Jesus. It is hoped that she found what she needed to feel true sorrow. What we do know is that through his gentle and wise persuasiveness, Jesus puts the Pharisees in their place and opens the door to grace for this child of God. Being exploited and used to test and discredit Jesus, she who is publicly known to be a sinner is now the victim. Jesus never tolerates people being used and immediately rushes to her defense. As the author of mercy, Jesus became her advocate and opened the door for her to God’s love. Jesus also stands between us and the harsh, judgmental, and often hurtful stance of our world. He invites us to grace, to leave the sin that binds us, and for which we are often criticized, and pursue a life of virtue and freedom.

The weekend Masses will begin with the Commemoration of the Lord’s Entrance into Jerusalem. The “Commemoration” will be celebrated outside (weather permitting) followed by a procession into the church. Palms will be distributed to the assembly before the “Commemoration.” Palms will be available throughout the day in the foyer of the Church.

Season of Lent Opportunity—Holy Hour:
The parish has a holy hour on Wednesdays beginning at 7:00 p.m. at St. Francis Solanus Church. The holy hour begins with the Stations of the Cross, followed by Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament and a writing from one of the early church fathers. The holy hour is offered as an opportunity for parishioners to come together in prayer, meditation and to receive the Lord’s blessing with the Blessed Sacrament.

Stations of the Cross:
A popular devotion during the Season of Lent is making the Stations of the Cross. Each station causes us to meditate on Jesus and what he encountered on his way to Calvary and his execution. They offer us inspiration as to how to be like Christ in our everyday living. We, individuals, and families, are invited to make the Stations of the Cross at least once during this Season of Lent. Public Stations of the Cross are held every Wednesday of Lent (except April 13) within a Holy Hour at St. Francis Solanus Church beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Lenten Fridays:
The Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence, that is, meatless days. This Lenten practice affects Catholics over the age of fourteen.

Martin Luther King Jr.’s Life and Vision:
This Sunday, April 3, from 2:00–4:00 p.m. at the Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts (1 Congress St.) there will be a celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of nonviolence through hands-on education, art and writing activities, and discussion for people of all ages. Also featured are open mic readings of King’s speeches. The event is free. Sponsors include the Trumansburg Area Churches (TAC), Trumansburg Middle School Social Justice Club, and the Town of Ulysses.

Food Donations Needed:
On the second Sunday of each month, (next Sunday) non-perishable food items will be received at St. James the Apostle Church and placed on a table in front of the Blessed Mother statue. They will be donated to the Trumansburg Food Pantry. Monetary donations are also welcome. (Please make checks out to Mary, Mother of Mercy, with “food pantry” in the memo line.) Lenten Reminders:

The season of Lent runs from Ash Wednesday (March 2) until the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday (April 14).
“Alleluia” is not sung or said from the beginning of Lent until the Easter Vigil.
During Lent the altar is not to be decorated with flowers.
Musical instruments may be played only to give necessary support to the singing.
The readings for the Lenten Masses have been chosen in relation to the themes of baptismal renewal and conversion.
The Easter celebration is: Holy Thursday, Good Friday & Holy Saturday – the Easter Triduum (Three Days of Easter).

Easter Duty:
(Church Law #920) All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year. The precept must be fulfilled during the Easter season unless it is fulfilled for a just cause at some other time during the year. In reference to this law the Easter season is considered from the First Sunday of Lent until Trinity Sunday (this year June 12).

Let Us Pray:
Please remember in your prayers those members of our parish who are in the hospital, sick at home, in a nursing home, or who have requested our prayers (see the list on the parish’s PRAYERS page). We also ask you to pray for those who have died. May the Lord bring comfort to their family and friends during this difficult time.
