Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
What makes a person wise and intelligent? Certainly it is not the ability to memorize facts or minute details about a situation. What makes a person wise and intelligent is when their words and actions harmoniously unite and produce virtue. A person can know many facts and even do the right actions but still have a grave flaw in their character. We sometimes want to delude ourselves into thinking that as long as we are “doing” everything correctly, we are automatically in right relationship with all. Such is sadly not the case in the kingdom of God. We are called not to be just hearers of the Word, but doers as well. That means getting to the heart of what laws and rituals are meant to signify and nurture. If we do not bring the actions home, where they belong, and allow them to speak of the goodness, mercy, compassion, and love of God, then they are simply empty worthless gestures. Welcome the Word that has been planted within you so that you can be a truly wise and intelligent disciple of Jesus Christ.

Reception of Holy Communion:
During these pandemic times, the church gives the encouragement to receive Holy Communion in the hand – the ancient and longest tradition of the Church. An added precaution for those choosing to receive Holy Communion on the tongue: please come up last in the Communion procession.

Mission Cooperative Appeal:
The Diocese of Rochester Propagation of the Faith office has invited the Diocese of Kumbakonam, India to participate in the Mission Cooperative Appeal in our parish this year. Rev. Antony Muthu will speak at all the Masses on the weekend of September 11/12. The Kumbakonam Diocese is in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The Catholic population is 6% and is served by 224 diocesan and 79 religious priests, 620 nuns, 12 trained catechists and 330 untrained lay catechists and 2 social service centers.

Family Faith Formation at Mary, Mother of Mercy:
The Family Faith Formation program will begin Sunday, September 19, and is open to all families with children in grades K-7. This year, the program will be weekly and will begin with the family attendance at the 9:00 a.m. Mass at St. James the Apostle. Following the Mass, families will gather for fellowship and a doctrinal lesson and activities based on the Sunday readings. At this time, it is hoped that the Religious Formation Director will be Brother Francisco Serrano, OFM Cap. He has recently received his Master’s Degree of Divinity and has been assigned to St. Fidelis Friary to begin a pastoral year of formation at our parish. Food Pantry Donations Resume:
Non-perishable food items are once again being accepted at all three of our parish churches. Donations left at Holy Cross will go to the Ovid Federated Church; donations left at St. Francis Solanus will go to the Reformed Church in Interlaken; and food left at St. James the Apostle will be taken to the Trumansburg Food Pantry.

Mary, Mother of Mercy Needs You:
The parish needs people who may be called upon to occasionally perform various small tasks, such as weeding one flower garden, changing a few light bulbs, or helping to move tables, chairs, fans, etc. Please sign up today. Sign up sheets are located on the churches’ bulletin boards.

St. James the Apostle Church – New Collection Baskets:
New collection baskets have arrived, and the plan is to start using them September 5. We will be using collection baskets without handles. The ushers will start the baskets at the front pew, and each person can make their donation and then give the basket to the next person in the pew. When the basket reaches the end of the pew, please pass it to the person behind you.

Sanctuary Lamp:
In Catholic Churches, a candle is always lit to indicate that the Blessed Sacrament is present in the church. This candle is called the “sanctuary lamp.” Every week the candle or oil is renewed. In many churches, people donate to the church for the sanctuary lamp be lit for the week for the intention of the donor. This has been the custom at Holy Cross Church, Ovid and is now extended to St. James the Apostle and St. Francis Solanus Churches. In making the donation simply put on the envelope, “donation for the sanctuary lamp” and specify the week and, if so desired, your intention.

The Healing Journey Class:
The Interlaken Reformed Church is hosting classes for anyone struggling with loss, grief, or depression. They are biblically based and designed for all, regardless of your faith perspective. You are invited to gather for a time of quiet prayer for the healing and harmony of each of us and all of God’s creation. The format will include self-introductions, a brief opening reflection, about 30 minutes of silent, shared prayer and a brief closing. The extended time of shared silence provides an opportunity for quieting personal reflection and healing. The facilitator is Sister Anne Alderman SSJ and there is a suggested donation of $2 or $3 to benefit the Sisters of St. Joseph (not required). People stop by in search of outfits for job interviews, work, school, and general purposes. For some folks, having a friendly conversation is as important as getting a shirt or pair of pants. We’re seeking volunteers to commit to one morning shift per week, Tuesday through Friday, to wait on customers and help sort donations at our office in downtown Ithaca. COVID-19 safety protocols will be enforced. Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Many people give their allegiance to something until it asks them to do something challenging or radical. Then, they find themselves rethinking whether they want to be associated with it. The same holds for God. Either we serve God, or we don’t. There can be no lukewarm stance with regard to faith. If we are in, then faith in Jesus Christ asks us to do some difficult things: work in service of God’s kingdom, love our enemies, offer no resistance to injury, and trust that the Eucharist is in fact Jesus’ very Body and Blood. For some, buying into these things may prove too difficult and a return to a life without them is preferred. But truth is truth and it can only be found in God. If we find it hard to accept it from the mouth of Christ, where else can we go to find it? The task before us is to commit to the truth even when it may be easier to pursue something else. Truth is always worth obtaining even when it is difficult. Jesus offers us the truth of life, a life that is found in his own flesh and blood and a life of discipleship.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Good mothers have a way of bringing their children hope. When we fall and hurt ourselves, our mothers can help us walk the path of healing. There is hope that we will get better and the trust that we have in mom’s comforting assurance allows us to move forward. Mothers know instinctively what we need and what we are capable of doing. They can be one of our biggest cheerleaders in life, and even when facing despair, can point the way to a brighter tomorrow. Our Blessed Mother does precisely that for us today. As one closest to our Lord, she cheers us on with the hope of what life will be for all of us. Although given the unique distinction of being raised in both body and soul, she nonetheless points to our true eternal destiny. Achieving this inheritance overrides any disappointment and her intercession and example inspires us to pick ourselves up when we fall. Always a mother filled with grace and hope, she calls us to reaffirm our faith in God and in the gifts we have each been given as we persevere even in the midst of life’s challenges and failures.

Family Faith Formation at Mary, Mother of Mercy:
The Family Faith Formation program will begin Sunday, September 19, and is open to all families with children in grades K-7. This year, the program will be weekly and will begin with the family attendance at the 9:00 a.m. Mass at St. James the Apostle. Following the Mass, families will gather for fellowship and a doctrinal lesson and activities based on the Sunday readings. At this time, it is hoped that the Religious Formation Director will be Brother Francisco Serrano, OFM Cap. He has recently received his Master’s Degree of Divinity and has been assigned to St. Fidelis Friary to begin a pastoral year of formation at our parish. St. James the Apostle Church – New Collection Baskets:
New collection baskets have arrived, and the plan is to start using them September 5. We will be using collection baskets without handles. The ushers will start the baskets at the front pew, and each person can make their donation and then give the basket to the next person in the pew. When the basket reaches the end of the pew, please pass it to the person behind you.

Food Pantry Donations Resume:
Non-perishable food items are once again being accepted at all three of our parish churches. Donations left at Holy Cross will go to the Ovid Federated Church; donations left at St. Francis Solanus will go to the Reformed Church in Interlaken; and food left at St. James the Apostle will be taken to the Trumansburg Food Pantry.

The Family Hope Center has two locations: one in Geneva and a satellite location in Ovid in the Holy Cross Church Rectory. Family Hope Center fights for life by valuing life above all else. It means offering support through free pregnancy tests, a limited ultrasound referral, parenting and life skills classes, bible studies, material aid such as diapers and clothing, and through our forgiven and set free post abortion study. It means looking at our clients and saying, “I see your life; I value your life. I see and value your children’s lives. You can be a friend to elders, youth and families who visit Catholic Charities by volunteering in our free clothing closet. People stop by in search of outfits for job interviews, work, school, and general purposes. For some folks, having a friendly conversation is as important as getting a shirt or pair of pants. We’re seeking volunteers to commit to one morning shift per week, Tuesday through Friday, to wait on customers and help sort donations at our office in downtown Ithaca. COVID-19 safety protocols will be enforced. On Wednesday, September 15, Rev. Robert Werth will present “Feeding the Spiritual Hungers” at the Notre Dame Retreat House, Canandaigua. Fr. Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Are we willing to be taught by God? If we are, then we will begin to see things and make judgments using a Divine lens. Often, we perceive things with purely human eyes and reference points. When we do this, reality can lose its Divine spark and we miss what God is trying to say. When using human eyes exclusively, Jesus is at best perceived simply as a prophet who has some wise things to say. The human element has a difficult time seeing Jesus’ divinity and recognizing him as the Bread of Life that comes down from heaven. We can easily get stuck on Jesus’ human associations and overlook the marvelous wonders God wants us to see. If we really allow ourselves to be taught by God, we will then come to see the truth about Jesus and the abundant everlasting life God offers. Jesus becomes the key that unlocks all of our relationships: with God, others, ourselves, and creation. He, as the true and lasting bread from heaven, shows us the gifts of faith, hope, and love that God bestows on us. Through this divine lens we see that all life sparkles and glows with God’s love.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
When we lose our ability to trust, we become afraid. When we are afraid, we may begin to grumble and question whether where we are is where we need to be. For us who have faith, we even question whether God is who God says He is. Trust is so important to our success on our journey. Often, the road of our lives can become a bit treacherous. We may find ourselves feeling more unsettled than comfortable and less fulfilled than we would like to be. As much as we try, the pieces of our puzzle don’t quite fit together as they ought. We wonder if we will ever experience happiness again. Then, something reminds us that God is very much present in this mess we call life. God is still bringing hope out of despair and life out of death. After all, God is the true bread that comes down from heaven to give life. All that is necessary is for us to trust in this truth, even when we may be lacking in some of life’s essentials. The God who gives life is the same God who sustains it. He is also the same God who assures us that we will not perish.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
God shows up in unexpected ways! Just when we think we have God’s agenda figured out, another surprise comes. Expecting to find God only in some places hinders us from finding Him everywhere. Who would have thought that a young boy’s few loaves and fishes would feed thousands of people? The disciples were probably just as amazed as everyone else when this feast appeared before them. Sometimes, we find it difficult to believe that God can do amazing things with something small and simple. Yet, grasping this truth is really at the heart of understanding the power of the Eucharist. Having the Body and Blood of Christ made present for us is one amazing wonder. Actually being fed and nourished by that gift is another. Now being able to become what we have eaten, God can do tremendous things with the simple, humble gifts of our lives. All we have to do is realize that God dwells within us. When we do, then everyone we encounter and everything we do has the power to become a sacramental moment. When done with great love even the smallest gesture can be multiplied exponentially. Now, that’s amazing!

The format will include self-introductions, a brief opening reflection, about 30 minutes of silent, shared prayer and a brief closing. The extended time of shared silence provides an opportunity for quieting personal reflection and healing. You do not need to attend every session.

Feast Day:
This Sunday, July 25, is the feast day of St. James the Apostle, the patron saint of our Trumansburg parish church. The Liturgy for the Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time takes precedence and St. James feast day will not be liturgically celebrated this year.

St. James, also called James, son of Zebedee, or James the Greater, (born, Galilee, Palestine—died 44 AD, Jerusalem;), was one of the Twelve Apostles, distinguished as being in Jesus’s innermost circle and the only apostle whose martyrdom is recorded in the New Testament (Acts 12:2). James and his younger brother, St. John the Apostle, are designated Boanerges (from the Greek boanerges), or “Sons of Thunder” (Mark 3:17), perhaps because of their characteristic fiery zeal (Mark 9:38 and Luke 9:54).

With Saints Peter and Andrew, James and John were the first four disciples whom Jesus called (Mark 1:16–19). As a member of the inner circle, James witnessed the raising of Jairus’s daughter from the dead (Mark 5:37 and Luke 8:51), the Transfiguration (Mark 9:2), and Jesus’ agony in the Garden of Gethsemane (Mark 14:33 and Matthew 26:37). Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
We only have so much psychological and spiritual energy. We easily get tired. Responding to life’s demands and people’s needs can really zap us of all of our energy. Anger, frustration, exhaustion, discouragement, helplessness, and even apathy can run wild. We can find ourselves bitter and irritated by the fact that we have to do it all again. We need to rest, connect, and focus. Deserted places, free of unnecessary distractions and demands, are great places of refreshment and we all need them. Desiring to be alone for a bit and rest does not indicate selfishness. Rather, it radiates wisdom. God is the source of all we do and the satisfaction of every human heart. If we are going to use the gifts God gave us well, then we have to make sure our batteries are recharged and replenished. Jesus invites us to go to a desert place to rest and pray. Where is yours?

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
God calls us to bring His Word to all corners of the earth. What does that mean for you and me? We are just simple and humble folks trying to find our way through the Gospel and our world. After all, we are not professional preachers but gentle servants. Jesus summons us to take his message on the road and bring it from the pew to the pavement. We cannot keep the joy of the Gospel to ourselves but must bring it into every aspect of our lives: our families, our schools, our work, our corporations, our politics, our social circles, and our philosophies. We cannot just accept the wisdom of the world as true and conduct our lives as if the Good News is a separate matter. They are one. Jesus never asked his friends to go and construct buildings where people could come to hear the truth. He asked them to go to their homes and meet them one on one, face to face. When the rubber meets the road and the message is challenging, rejection is quite possible. That’s the litmus test for whether we’re really doing what we have been asked.

Funerals:
A burial service was held at Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Romulus for our parishioner Lloyd Brown on June 26, 2021. Lloyd died December 5, 2020. Lloyd was 55 years old.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated for Eugenia (Genie) Srmack on July 2, 2020 at Holy Cross Church, Ovid. Genie died on June 27, 2020 at the age of 87.

Prayer for Healing and Harmony:
In this time of unrest, violence, and disease, when our society is polarized, you are invited to gather for a time of quiet prayer for the healing and harmony of each of us and all of God’s creation. The format will include self-introductions, a brief opening reflection, about 30 minutes of silent, shared prayer and a brief closing. The extended time of shared silence provides an opportunity for quieting personal reflection and healing. You do not need to attend every session.

This event will take place on Wednesdays, July 21 and August 4 & 18, at 3:30 p.m. in the Pine Room at St. James the Apostle Church. It will also happen on Wednesdays, July 14 & 28 and August 11 & 25, at 3:30 p.m. at the Holy Cross Rectory.

Catholic Ministries Appeal:
Our given parish goal was $29,979 for the 2020-2021 CMA. Cash received at the CMA through June 7, 2021 was $32,804. Cash receipts in excess of goal were $2,825. 50% of cash, in excess of goal, returned to the parish was $1,413. Again, “Thank you” to all the parish households who contributed to the CMA. As was announced earlier our parish goal for 2021-2022 has been decreased. Out new parish goal will be: $28,086.

Feast Day:
In the United States, July 16 is the feast day of St. Francis Solanus, the patron saint of one of Mary, Mother of Mercy Parish Churches in Interlaken, NY. St. Francis Solanus was born March 10, 1549 in Montilla, Spain and died on July 14, 1610 in Lima, Peru, South America. He was a very successful Franciscan missionary and is called the “Apostle of the Tucuman,” that is today northwestern Argentina and Paraguay.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
God never ceases to proclaim His Word. His life-giving presence continues to sustain all things and keep them in being regardless of whether there is the faith to receive or perceive Him. Our personal agendas, preconceived ideas, misconceptions, and expectations can often cause us to be so hard of heart and obstinate that we fail to see what God is trying to do. While God remains ever present, faith is necessary for God’s power to bear fruit. As we celebrate our country’s independence, let us not forget the difference between liberties and freedom. While the liberties we have are most welcome treasures, only freedom from what blinds, deceives, and weighs us down can bring happiness. God is all about healing, transformation, and hope. In order for God to do what God does best, we have to invite Him in and see Him for who he is. Otherwise, God’s will for humanity will be something at which we simply take offense, a common reaction when something challenges or unsettles us.

Coronavirus Restrictions Lifted:
New York State has lifted Coronavirus restrictions. The church buildings will not be divided into “Distancing and No Distancing Sections” and the churches can be filled to capacity. People who have not been vaccinated, however, are asked to continue to wear masks. There will be a return to having altar servers, lectors and extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion and offertory collections. There will be a return to singing. Church pews, etc., do not have to be sanitized after services. What will be maintained is the reception of Holy Communion under one form – the Sacred Host. The exchange of the sign of peace (which is always optional) is without shaking hands and all holy water fonts are to remain empty.

The Church in Central & Eastern Europe:
Next week we will take up the Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. The collection supports the Church in more than 25 countries that still struggle to recover from former communist rule. Funds from this collection support pastoral care, catechesis, building renovations, and seminary formation. Your support restores the Church and builds the future in the region. Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
“Do not be afraid, just have faith.” God does not rejoice in our demise or our destruction. Rather, He made us in his image and desires that we have life. He also desires that we be healed and know His loving touch. There is great power in an embrace offered in love. The touch of another can heal wounds and restore life. There is also power in faith. Faith can turn us toward the truth and turn us toward God. Both love and faith can lead us to hope that no matter what we encounter, God will continue to sustain us in being. He will not allow us to perish. God can profoundly change how we see Him, ourselves, and one another. God desires that we turn toward Him and be healed of all that wounds and binds us so that we can be free and enjoy the fullness of life. We are asked to arise and walk proudly with this life-giving faith. Reach out and share this faith with someone this week so that they too can receive God’s life changing embrace and heed His call to wholeness. There are many in our world wandering around aimlessly without hope. Bring it to them.

Since we presently cannot have the prayer request books in our churches, do know that the prayer requests of fellow parishioners are still being listed on the parish website (see PRAYERS in top bar). If you would like to add a request, please email the parish at or phone the parish office at 607–294–0064 and it will be added to the list.

Mass Intention Requests:
Parishioners requesting a Mass intention for a particular date and time can do so by completing the “Mass Intentions Request Form” located in the foyers of the churches. Mass intentions may also be requested by phoning the parish office.

Prayers from the Sisters of St. Joseph:
The Sisters of St. Joseph have a prayer ministry for the Diocese of Rochester. They have informed our parish that Sisters Anne Marie Burns and Dolores Bachman will be praying for our parish and parishioners throughout 2021. Let us keep in our prayers the two sisters praying for us and for all the Sisters of St. Joseph of Rochester.

Year of St. Joseph:
Pope Francis initiated the Year of St. Joseph in recognition of the 150th Anniversary of the declaration of St. Joseph as patron of the Catholic Church. This year is dedicated to increase our love for this great saint, to encourage us to implore his intercession and to imitate his virtues and his zeal.

Cancer Services Program (CSP):
Cortland and Tompkins Counties offer free cancer screenings to those who are uninsured or have health insurance that does not cover these screenings. The screening services are provided in local health centers, doctors’ offices, and hospitals. For more information, contact CSP at 866 442 2262.
