Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Do we trust that God will take care of us and has things under control? When life gets difficult, shaky or painful, we may find ourselves wondering what we may have done to deserve this fate. Often, we go to great lengths to explain suffering away, as if it has no purpose and ought not to exist. In an attempt to get God on our side in our battle against suffering, our prayer can mirror a question asked by the disciples: do you not care that we are perishing? As we are asking that question of God, God is asking of us: do you not yet have faith? It is for certain that God does not intentionally inflict pain upon us. God has no sinister plot to test our faith or trip us up. Rather, the unconditional, restorative and rejuvenating power of God’s love can bring light out of the greatest darkness and gives hope in the midst of deep despair. We have to be patient and ride out the storm. It is our task to deepen our faith that God will calm the wind and draw meaning out of that which seems senseless.

World Refugee Day:
Today we celebrate World Refugee Day. On World Refugee Day we pause and remember the 26 million refugees who have had to flee their countries in search of safety for their families. Refugees are people looking for the same thing that everyone wants: happiness and a safe home for their families. Let us remember the sacrifice those who have been forced from their homes make to seek safety for their families. Let everyone know that you support and protect the right of refugees to be welcomed in the United States.

Peter’s Pence Collection:

Parish Council:
The Parish Council will meet this Thursday, June 24, at the Parish Center at 7:00 p.m. Part of the agenda will be the election of an Executive Committee and the appointment of members to a standing committee with the election of a committee chair. The standing committees are: Word, Worship, Witness, and Fellowship. The Pastor will also be looking for input on the Saturday Vigil Mass. The last meeting of the Parish Council was in March 2020. We are looking forward to this being a grand gathering and meeting. Diocesan Patronal Feast Day:
Bishop Salvatore R. Matano invites the faithful to the Diocesan Patronal Feast Day Mass of St. John Fisher on Tuesday, June 22, at 7:00 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. This Mass will begin Religious Freedom Week, June 22–June 29, as the Diocese of Rochester joins all dioceses in the United States to “Pray – Reflect – Act” in promoting religious freedom.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Jesus compares the Kingdom of God to a mustard seed, the tiniest of seeds. When planted, the tiny mustard seed grows into a tremendous tree with large branches. So too in each of our lives small things can have profound effects. God can use one of our more insignificant gestures to radically change another person’s life. It may be the kindness of a smile, our willingness to accommodate someone, listening to someone’s story, helping someone who is hurting, standing up for someone who is right or complimenting someone on something they did. We all have God given gifts and talents. What are some of yours? Our task is to use our talents creatively, consistently, lovingly, and generously. Because we are always guided by the Holy Spirit, things that may be insignificant or unnoticed to us can profoundly change the life of someone else. While we may think we are small and insignificant, God can make us large and magnificent. All we have to do is open ourselves to being used. We trust that God will take care of the rest.

Cemetery Advisory Committee:
The Diocese of Rochester requires that parishes with a Cemetery or Cemeteries must establish a Cemetery Advisory Committee. At present, St. James the Apostle and Holy Cross have separate cemetery committees. These will be merged into the Cemetery Advisory Committee. Thank You for Advocating for the Hungry!
Thanks to all who participated in Diocesan Public Policy weekend in February, signing the petition to advocate for funding for Nourish New York. As the legislative session ends in Albany, we have great news to share: You helped to make Nourish New York a permanent program of the Department of Agriculture and Markets, and to secure $50 million for its work in 2021-22! This pandemic initiative, first launched in April 2020, provides funding to New York food banks for the purchase of produce, dairy products, meat, and other foods produced in New York State. To date, food banks have purchased 21 million pounds of agricultural products from New York farms through Nourish New York. This food was distributed through local food pantries, feeding 1.3 million food-insecure families across the state. Nourish New York invests in a statewide food system that expands market opportunities for farmers, eliminates food wastes and helps to ensure that no New Yorker goes hungry. Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
As we gather today to reaffirm our faith in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, we are reminded that we are also the Body of Christ. The mission of the Gospel calls us to be Christ for others. There is so much brokenness and pain in our world. Many people are lost and feeling lonely, marginalized and oppressed, victimized and abused. Every time we receive the Body (and Blood) of Christ, we are asked to become what we eat. Are we willing to step aside from our preoccupations and concerns so that we can be Christ for others? The power and presence of Christ in the Eucharist becomes present in us. In receiving this transforming presence of Christ, we can truly effect change in the lives of those we meet. We can show them God’s unconditional, ever-present love and the beauty that can come from loving others. We are given the grace to become temples of justice and peace, carrying God’s sacred Presence within us wherever we go.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
The immensity, scope, intimacy, and pervasiveness of God’s presence is too intense for the human mind. We often limit God by our expectations of Him and have a hard time just letting God be God. Some people all too easily lose faith because God does not meet their expectations. Worse still, the idea of faith is rejected altogether by others because of polarities and experiences they have that don’t square with who they need God to be. The Holy Trinity is one of those teachings that is best encountered rather than dissected. It is only through being present with the Trinity that we can experience both the immensity and otherness of God’s presence as well as the intimacy of the God who wants us to call Him “dad.” We feel the loving guidance of a God who wants to take us from fear and give us confidence. Our God of yesterday, today, and tomorrow is a God of all ages whose three-fold Presence invades all senses, seasons, and times. God, who is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, is much more than any of our expectations if we simply let God be who God is.

First Holy Communion Celebration:
On the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, (Sunday, June 6) Nicolas Angulo-Stevenson, a parish teenager who has celebrated the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation, will complete his initiation into the Church with the reception of First Holy Communion. This will take place at the 9:00 a.m. Mass at St. James the Apostle.

This year is dedicated to increase our love for St. Joseph, to encourage us to implore his intercession, and to imitate his virtues and his zeal. In some Christian cultures the weekday Wednesday has been a day dedicated to St. Joseph. Beginning this Wednesday, after the 8:30 a.m. Mass, we will pray the Litany of St. Joseph which is an inspiration as to St. Joseph’s many virtues and to ask his intercession for the increase of vocations to the priesthood and religious life and for the continuing awareness of the sanctity of life.

Diocesan Catholic Ministries Appeal:
The CMA parish goals have been recalculated based on: 2020 collections; 2019 Mass attendance; 2020 households; and 2019 US Census Data – Median Household income. The 2021-2022 CMA goal for our parish has been decreased from $29,979 to $28,086. Again we offer “thanks” to the one hundred and twenty-one parish households that pledged $32,704 during the 2020–2021 Appeal. We were $2,725 over goal. Half of the overage will be returned to the parish. The parish is most appreciative of you all.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
The phrase “being filled with the Holy Spirit” may summon forth images that are a bit too intense for some folks. They may conclude that when one is filled with the Holy Spirit that they immediately begin speaking in tongues, loudly praise God, sing alleluia from roof tops, and do other demonstrative things. In reality, being filled with the Holy Spirit means being filled with the fullness of God’s life and in touch with the power and wonder of God’s presence. It is the Holy Spirit that draws us together as a community of faith, inspires us with wisdom and right judgment, and turns us from the darkness of sin to the virtues that bring life. We live in a world where it is hard to discover truth. The Holy Spirit, through the ministry of the church, guides us to truth and shows us the way to be the graced human beings God made us to be. Come, Holy Spirit, and fill our hearts!

A funeral Mass was celebrated for Bill Hogan, age 88, on Friday, May 21, 2021 at St. James the Apostle Church. Bill died on May 13.

The celebrant will accept her profession on behalf of the Church, and the celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation will follow. Karen will also celebrate her First Holy Communion at the Mass. This is a joyful event for Karen and for the Parish. Alleluia – Praise God.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
When Jesus was physically with his disciples, he guarded and protected them. One of his greatest desires was that they share his joy completely. God’s love is the source of all things and their sustenance. As we conduct the normal routines of our lives it is easy to get caught up in the immediacies of this world and lose focus. We become very self and worldly dependent, forgetting that God wishes to guard and protect us. The joy the resurrected Christ can offer cannot be found in this world. It takes a bit of faith to realize that God’s will is a constant in our lives and that God desires only the sustenance and goodness of both our bodies and our souls. We need to trust in God’s constant and rejuvenating love. This radical resurrection trust allows us to experience the joy of God’s presence in all of the good and the bad, positive and negative, life building and life destructive events that we encounter. God remains where love remains.

Reception into the Catholic Church:
Next Sunday, Pentecost Sunday, at the 9:00 a.m. Mass, Karen Salino will make a Profession of Faith in the Catholic Church. For the past two years, Karen has been preparing for this celebration of reception. At Mass, Karen will be called forward to proclaim the Nicene Creed with the assembly. Immediately after she will make a profession of faith in the Catholic Church. The celebrant will accept her profession on behalf of the Church and the celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation will follow. This is a joyful event for Karen and for the Parish. Diocesan Missions Sunday:
This weekend, May 15 and 16, we shall observe Diocesan Missions Sunday. Proclaiming the Gospel is not something we can do once for all, but is an ongoing part of the Church. This is the message of the new evangelization. “Being a disciple means being constantly ready to bring the love of Jesus to others, and this can happen unexpectedly and in any place: on the street, in a city square, during work, on a journey.”  Evangelii Gaudium, “The Joy of the Gospel” (127). Our dedicated Sisters of Mercy in Chile and the Sisters of St. Joseph in Brazil have been on pilgrimage sharing their gifts of faith and service to God’s people. We are called to help them with our prayers and a sacrificial gift, so that they may continue to bring Christ into a world where darkness, despair and emptiness prevail. Surely, we can help to bring hope to them.

Litany of St. Joseph:
This year is dedicated to increase our love for St. Joseph, to encourage us to implore his intercession, and to imitate his virtues and his zeal. In some Christian cultures the weekday Wednesday has been a day dedicated to St. Joseph. Beginning this Wednesday, after the 8:30 a.m. Mass, we will pray the Litany of St. Joseph which is an inspiration as to St. Joseph’s many virtues and to ask his intercession for the increase of vocations to the priesthood and religious life and for the continuing awareness of the sanctity of life.

Cemetery Advisory Committee:
The Diocese of Rochester requires that parishes with a Cemetery or Cemeteries must establish a Cemetery Advisory Committee. At present, St. James the Apostle and Holy Cross have separate cemetery committees. These will be merged into the Cemetery Advisory Committee. Easter Duty:
“All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year. The precept must be fulfilled during the Easter season unless it is fulfilled for a just cause at some other time during the year.” (Church law #920) In reference to this precept the Easter season is considered the First Sunday of Lent until Trinity Sunday (this year May 30).

Offertory Collection:
During this time of the pandemic, offertory collections cannot be taken up. When parishioners attend Mass, please place your offertory in the new collection stand at the entrances of the church. The new stand replaces the baskets at the entrances and offers security to your offering.

COVID-19 Rental Assistance Program:
This program is designed to provide up to three months of rent relief to eligible households who have experienced a loss of income related to the public health crisis. Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
God is love. These three simple words deserve a great deal of attention. They have the power to transform our relationship with God from something that is static and distant to one that is personal and real. We all know the power of love and how important it is to completing all of the human and divine circuits of our lives. But we do not often consider the awesome fact that it is given to us as a gift and is not simply part and parcel of the human package. God is the author of love and love itself. When we truly love another human being, it is really God being God in and through us. The love to which we are called and the love of which the Gospel speaks is a selfless love that seeks the wellbeing of not only our significant others but of all of our brothers and sisters. This love, which is of God, is a love that will endure all things and bring immeasurable joy when experienced. It is the most sincere form of friendship.

Mother’s Day:
Today we praise God for our mothers. Their continued loving service is rejoiced in and is an inspiration for us to imitate. The Council met on April 29 with the new Diocesan Regional Finance Director, Ms. Rebecca Pizzirusso, to review among other items the third quarter financial report. The good news is that we are in the black. Year to date (March 30, 2021), the ordinary receipts amounted to $159,914.04 and the ordinary expenditures amounted to $152,487.05. In relation to the previous year’s third quarter reporting our ordinary receipts were up $4,238 and our expenditures were down $8,156. Many thanks to all for your financial support to the parish. Birthright of Ithaca:

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Anyone familiar with gardening knows that proper and timely pruning is essential. The health of the plant depends upon it. An unpruned tree can quickly produce suckers that zap many of the essential nutrients from its body. Pruning requires patience and vision. Studies reveal that plants often respond defensively to being pruned, displaying reactions that are similar to hurt or discomfort. Pruning is not easy but necessary. A hard lesson for us to learn is that we also need to be pruned. We become far healthier when we allow God to stretch, refine, and form us into the best version of ourselves. The fruit that then comes from our vines will be more abundant, nutritious, and robust. Left to our own devices we can easily find ourselves running amuck and spiraling out of control. Without a proper vision and trust in the Master Pruner, we will never find the contentment we desperately desire. Nor will the work of the Gospel stand a chance of succeeding.

2020/2021 Catholic Ministries Appeal:
Bishop Salvatore R. Matano wrote a letter, dated April 12, to the parish expressing his sincere gratitude for exceeding our parish CMA goal of $29,979. He stated that this year’s theme was Christ, Our Light, beckoning us to look to the Light of Our Savior to navigate us through these challenging times especially in this time of great uncertainty during the tragic pandemic affecting so many aspects of our daily life.
As of April 22 one hundred and twenty parish households have pledged $32,604 to the CMA. The bishop referred to this as a living testament to our faith in our mission and good works. He added, “I am so very thankful for and deeply encouraged by the parish’s commitment and dedication. I pray that the Lord will continue to bless your parish family.”

First Communions:
Two parishioners will celebrate their first communion this Sunday, May 2, at the 9:00 a.m. Mass at St. James the Apostle Church. They are Grace Guydosh and Porter Landon.

The Easter Sacraments:
Fr. Bernard will give a presentation on the Sacrament of Confirmation (May 4) and Eucharist (May 11) at the Parish Center, Interlaken, beginning at 7:00 p.m.

“Lord, when did we see You… in prison?” Matthew 25:39:
There are many ways in which a parish may get involved in prison or jail ministry. They can be as simple as sending cards on Christmas to organizing bible studies and focus groups to address certain issues. The first thing a parish would want to do is see if there are members of the congregation interested in the topic of ministry to the incarcerated. Many times, there are members who know someone who spent time in prison or who have been incarcerated themselves. These people are valuable resources to offer firsthand experiences in visiting inmates or living among them. They typically have a heartfelt desire to bring the mercy of God and the hope of Jesus to those in hopeless situations which landed them behind bars.

Diocesan Social Ministry Conference:
Join Catholics from around the diocese on Thursday, May 6, for the annual Diocesan Social Ministry Conference on Zoom. The conference will include a reflection on Pope Francis’s recent encyclical, Fratelli Tutti – On Fraternity and Social Friendship. Notre Dame Retreat House:
“Desert Days” are special days for individuals seeking a one-day retreat alone with God. Notre Dame High School Open House:
Notre Dame High School, Grades 7–12 is hosting a Spring Open House on Wednesday, May 19, at 6 p.m. The evening will begin with a brief presentation in the Auditorium at the school at 6:00 p.m. with campus tours to follow. Notre Dame is a college preparatory school. Human Life Action:

With some artistic liberties of the movie industry, the film provides insight into the cultural circumstance that resulted in the Court decision that led to more than 62 million American children killed by abortion over the past 48 years. The Bishop’s Reminder:
Due to the prevalence of the Coronavirus, the obligation to attend Sunday Mass is suspended until further notice. Those who are at a higher risk of COVID-19 and those concerned for their health are urged not to come to church for Mass. Those who feel in any way sick should not enter any parish building or church.

Easter Duty:
“All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year. The precept must be fulfilled during the Easter season unless it is fulfilled for a just cause at some other time during the year.” (Church law #920) In reference to this precept the Easter season is considered the First Sunday of Lent until Trinity Sunday (this year May 30).

Offertory Collection:
During this time of the pandemic, offertory collections cannot be taken up. When parishioners attend Mass, please place your offertory in the new collection stand at the entrances of the church. The new stand replaces the baskets at the entrances and offers security to your offering.

COVID-19 Rental Assistance Program:
This program is designed to provide up to three months of rent relief to eligible households who have experienced a loss of income related to the public health crisis. Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
The cornerstone is the first stone that is laid and the stone that not only determines how the other stones are placed but the position of the entire structure. As human beings, we need a cornerstone or reference point so that our lives can be properly placed and positioned. Our cornerstone determines not only how we see ourselves but who we will become. Without a cornerstone or reference point, we will be disconnected, disoriented, and poorly positioned for effective action in our world. In order to be the children of God we are, Jesus Christ needs to be our cornerstone and the reference point for all that we do. He alone is the Good Shepherd who can guide through life’s questions and challenges, bringing us to proper pasture. Without this proper base, we can easily fall into the trap of self-aggrandizement and quickly lose our way. If that happens, then moral principles, proper conduct, justice, wisdom, and virtue will be difficult to find. We need to listen to the right voices and allow God to show us how to build our house well. Salvation only comes from God and only God will protect us, no matter the cost.

Parish Finance Council:
At the end of March, 2021, Ms. Rebecca Pizzirusso, who is the Diocesan Regional Finance Director for the Geneva, Seneca Falls and Waterloo parishes, was appointed to be also our parish Reginal Finance Director. She will be introduced and welcomed at the Parish Finance Council meeting this Thursday at 1:00 p.m. at the Parish Center, Interlaken. We take this opportunity to express our thanks to Mr. David Zellinger who, for the past five years, has been our Regional Finance Director and a counselor and overseer of our parish finances and property.

In July 2019, capital punishment in federal cases was resumed in the U.S. after a 16 year hiatus. At the very heart of Catholic teaching is reverence for the inviolable dignity of the human being and the belief that every person, made in the image and likeness of God, is given the opportunity for redemption. This includes those who have caused great harm. Saint Pope John Paul II in his encyclical The Gospel of Life, emphatically proclaimed, “Not even a murderer loses his personal dignity.” (EV, 9). National Blue Sunday:
The last Sunday of April is a day of prayer for abused children. Blue Sunday is a national faith-based movement when churches take time to pray for victims of child abuse and for those who rescue them. This year it will be April 25, 2021. There are over 3 million confirmed cases of child abuse in our nation annually and 1640 child deaths from child abuse (most were under the age of three).

World Day of Prayer for Vocations:
The church has set aside this Sunday, April 25, to highlight vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and life as a sister or brother in a community of religious. The day is highlighted to remind Catholics that every day we are to encourage and support young people who might be called to dedicate their lives to God in His holy church. Part of the encouragement is to personally and continually pray for vocations to the priesthood and religious life.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
When the greeting “Peace be with you” is sincerely offered to a person, it can resonate very deep within, bringing comfort and reassurance. When someone possesses the power to bring peace, it brings us to a place of safety and fills us with joy. The resurrected Christ has this power. God can open our minds so that we can more fully understand the meaning of Sacred Scripture and God’s compassionate, loving, tender, and untiring embrace constantly present and offered to people throughout history. Without the anchor of truth that only God can provide, we can easily become startled and terrified at the sight of what life brings us. Being open to God’s offer of peace, we can turn away from old habits and short-sighted vision and experience the gladness and joy of God’s gift. Only then can what is wounded and broken be mended and reconciliation achieved. We are the resurrection witnesses called to proclaim the Good News.

Three parishioners will celebrate their first communion on Sunday, May 2, at the 9:00 a.m. Mass at St. James the Apostle Church. They are: Christopher Clarke-Cabezas, Grace Guydosh and Porter Landon.

Thank you:
The parish has received “Thank you” notes from both the Trumansburg Food Pantry and the South Seneca Ecumenical Food Pantry with the words, “Thank you for your continued support. You are a blessing to the community.”

National Blue Sunday:
The last Sunday of April is a day of prayer for abused children. Blue Sunday is a national faith-based movement when churches take time to pray for victims of child abuse and for those who rescue them. This year it will be April 25, 2021. There are over 3 million confirmed cases of child abuse in our nation annually and 1640 child deaths from child abuse (most were under the age of three).

Good News:
The HALT Solitary bill has become law and will end the use of solitary confinement for young, old, ill and pregnant prisoners and limit its use among other prisoners in NYS prisons. Additionally, Nourish NY, the program we advocated for during Public Policy Weekend, has gotten significant funding and has been voted into being a permanent program of NYS Dept. Agriculture and Markets.

World Day of Prayer for Vocations:
Next Sunday, April 25, the church has set aside to highlight vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and life as a sister or brother in a community of religious. The day is highlighted to remind Catholics that every day we are to encourage and support young people who might be called to dedicate their lives to God in his holy church. Part of the encouragement is to personally and continually pray for vocations to the priesthood and religious life.

“Lord, when did we see You… in prison?” Matthew 25:39:
We might ask ourselves how often our own outreach concerns extend to our incarcerated brothers and sisters and their families. America’s rate of incarceration is greater than any other nation in the world: although our country has 5% of the world’s population, it has 25% of is prisoners. Sentence length and time served are much longer in the US than elsewhere, and include more solitary confinement, less rehabilitations, and poor re-entry assistance.  A crime data expert at the Brennan Center for Justice recently observed, “It is really a system that sets people up for failure.” (America, August 2020). As we continue to struggle with our own confinements during the pandemic, let us deepen our understanding of the sufferings of our incarcerated sisters and brother and pray to know how we can best care for them. In the coming weeks of this Easter Season, our Diocesan Public Policy Committee will be providing further information and assistance to parishes in these efforts.

Year of St. Joseph:
Pope Francis initiated the Year of St. Joseph in recognition of the 150th Anniversary of the declaration of St. Joseph as patron of the Catholic Church. This year is dedicated to increase our love for this great saint, to encourage us to implore his intercession and to imitate his virtues and his zeal.

The Bishop’s Reminder:
Due to the prevalence of the Coronavirus, the obligation to attend Sunday Mass is suspended until further notice. Those who are at a higher risk of COVID-19 and those concerned for their health are urged not to come to church for Mass. Those who feel in any way sick should not enter any parish building or church.

Mass Intention Requests:
Parishioners requesting a Mass intention for a particular date and time can do so by completing the “Mass Intentions Request Form” located in the foyers of the churches. Mass intentions may also be requested by phoning the parish office.

Offertory Collection:
During this time of the pandemic, offertory collections cannot be taken up. When parishioners attend Mass, please place your offertory in the new collection stand at the entrances of the church. The new stand replaces the baskets at the entrances and offers security to your offering.

COVID-19 Rental Assistance Program:
This program is designed to provide up to three months of rent relief to eligible households who have experienced a loss of income related to the public health crisis. The Sisters of St. Joseph have a prayer ministry for the Diocese of Rochester. They have informed our parish that Sisters Anne Marie Burns and Dolores Bachman will be praying for our parish and parishioners throughout 2021.
