Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Following Christ will take everything we have. Are we ready to give it all? At the end of our lives, let us hope we can say truthfully that we sold all we had in order to purchase the field which contained the great treasure.

Missionary Cooperation Plan – Visiting Missionary:
This weekend, Brother John Buckingham, CFC will be speaking at the weekend Masses. He will share the Edmund Rice Christian Brothers mission work in Latin America, especially Peru, Bolivia, and Uruguay.

The Congregation of Christian Brothers was founded in 1802 by Blessed Edmund Rice (1762-1844) in Waterford, Ireland to educate the poor and marginalized youth. By the end of the twentieth century the Congregation opened many primary and secondary schools, colleges, and orphanages in many different countries. Today, the Brothers serve as teachers, mentors, social workers, and community development professionals in some of the poorest regions of the world. The needs are great, and it is only through the financial generosity of people in North America that the Congregation can continue to bring the Good News of Jesus through a good Catholic education to those who are less fortunate.

Employment Opportunity:
The parish needs a part time maintenance person. It would not be regular hours, but when maintenance projects arise, the person would be on call to respond when convenient for the maintenance person. Please phone the parish office for more details.

Sweet Sunday:
Next Sunday, and the first Sunday of every month, parishioners are invited to a social time following the 9:00 a.m. Mass at St. James the Apostle, Trumansburg.

Taizé Prayer:
On the first and third Thursday of the month, Sister Anne Alderman, SSJ leads the Taizé Prayer in the Pine Room at St. James the Apostle, Trumansburg. Taizé Prayer was developed by an ecumenical community of monks in Taizé, France. It consists of readings and prayers interspersed with quiet, repetitive songs—a good way to quiet your soul and psyche after a busy day. Contact Sister Anne at 607–209–4206 or for more information.

Prayer for Healing and Harmony:
Sister Anne Alderman, SSJ leads a time of silent prayer on Wednesdays at 2:00 p.m. in the Pine Room at St. James the Apostle, Trumansburg. The extended time of shared silence provides an opportunity for personal reflection and healing. The session closes with a time to share any reflections that came to you. You do not need to attend every session. Questions? Call Sister Anne at 607–209–4206 or email .

Branches Lakeside Retreat:
Friday, August 4, from 9:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m., Branches Christian Rest & Renewal Center, Lodi, is holding a retreat themed Seeking the Peace of Christ facilitated by Rick Paolini. There will be a 3:00 p.m. healing Mass celebrated by Rev. Lukasz Kopala. To register visit branchescenter.org or phone 716–901–4313.

American Red Cross Blood Drive:
On August 1 from 1:00–6:00 p.m., the Red Cross is holding a blood drive at the American Legion, 4431 Seneca Road, Trumansburg. To schedule an appointment to donate phone 1-800-733-2767 or visit redcrossblood.org

Book Announcement:

Donating to Your Parish:
Online giving by WeShare is safe, simple and convenient. It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3:

  2. Follow the directions under the “Donate Online” section.
  3. Set up your donation or payment.

That’s it! Your account will be created and you can put away your checkbook. If you experience any problem, please e-mail Eileen at .

Notre Dame Retreat House:
There is a free, one-day retreat on August 19 at Notre Dame Retreat House, Canandaigua. Space is limited, please call 585-394-5700 or email to reserve your ticket. Visit notredameretreat.org for more details.

Family Hope Center:
The Family Hope Center has two locations: one in Geneva and a satellite location in Ovid in the Holy Cross Church Rectory. Family Hope Center fights for life by valuing life above all else. It means offering support through free pregnancy tests, a limited ultrasound referral, parenting and life skills classes, bible studies, material aid such as diapers and clothing, and through our forgiven and set free post abortion study. It means looking at our clients and saying, “I see your life; I value your life. I see and value your children’s lives. You are important and loved.” Women come to the Family Hope Center to be valued. The Pregnancy Care Center of the Finger Lakes is located at 551 Exchange St. in Geneva with an office in Ovid at 7231 Main St. “If you regret your abortion, you are not alone. Let us help you learn to forgive yourself.” To learn more visit familyhopecentergeneva.org, call 315–789–0708, text: 315-945-1019, or email .

Prayers for Our Parish:
The Sisters of St. Joseph have a prayer ministry for the Diocese of Rochester. Sister Anne Marie Burns and Sister Dolores Bachman will be praying for our parish and parishioners throughout 2023. We thank the Sisters for their thoughtfulness and kindness toward us. In our appreciation, please keep the Sisters of St. Joseph, especially Sisters Anne Marie and Dolores, in your thoughts and prayers.

Mass Intention Requests:
Those wishing to have someone remembered at a Mass may fill out a Mass Intentions Request form which is automatically submitted to the church office. You may also phone the parish office (607-294-0064) with your request or fill out one of the paper forms available in the foyer of each church and either mail it to the parish office or put it in the collection. There are several reasons why a person may ask a priest to offer a Mass for another individual: in thanksgiving; for the intentions of another person (such as on a birthday); or, as is most common, for the repose of the soul and in memory of someone who has died.

Sanctuary Lamp:
In Catholic Churches, a candle is always lit to indicate that the Blessed Sacrament is present in the church. This candle is called the “sanctuary lamp.” Every week the candle or oil is renewed. In many churches, people donate to the church for the sanctuary lamp be lit for the week for the intention of the donor. This has been the custom at Holy Cross Church, Ovid and is now extended to St. James the Apostle and St. Francis Solanus Churches. In making the donation simply put on the envelope, “donation for the sanctuary lamp” and specify the week and, if so desired, your intention.

Cancer Services Program (CSP):
Cortland and Tompkins Counties offer free cancer screenings to those who are uninsured or have health insurance that does not cover these screenings. The screening services are provided in local health centers, doctors’ offices, and hospitals. For more information, contact CSP at 866 442 2262.

Prayer Intentions:
Please feel free to add your prayer requests in the books available for that purpose in each church. The prayer requests of fellow parishioners are listed on the parish website (see PRAYERS in top bar). You may also add a request by emailing the parish at or phoning the parish office at 607–294–0064 and it will be added to the list.

Let Us Pray: Please remember in your prayers those members of our parish who are in the hospital, sick at home, in a nursing home, or who have requested our prayers (see the list on the parish’s PRAYERS page). We also ask you to pray for those who have died. May the Lord bring comfort to their family and friends during this difficult time and may they find hope in the Resurrection.

When the disciples cannot understand something, they approach Jesus, and beseech him to explain. Let us be this forthcoming when we are discerning the will of God or struggling with a decision. Let us ask him to explain in words we can understand.

Parish Cemeteries Second Collection:
The first monthly Parish of Mary, Mother of Mercy Cemetery Collection will be the weekend of July 23rd. Our parish has two cemeteries. Feast Day:
Tuesday, July 25, is the feast day of St. James the Apostle, the patron saint of our parish church in Trumansburg. St. James, also called James, son of Zebedee, or James the Greater, (born, Galilee, Palestine—died 44 A.D., Jerusalem), was one of the Twelve Apostles, distinguished as being in Jesus’s innermost circle and the only apostle whose martyrdom is recorded in the New Testament (Acts 12:2).  James and his younger brother, St. John the Apostle, are designated Boanerges (from the Greek boanerges), or “Sons of Thunder” (Mark 3:17), perhaps because of their characteristic fiery zeal (Mark 9:38 and Luke 9:54).

With Saints Peter and Andrew, James and John were the first four disciples whom Jesus called (Mark 1:16–19). As a member of the inner circle, James witnessed the raising of Jairus’s daughter from the dead (Mark 5:37 and Luke 8:51), the Transfiguration (Mark 9:2), and Jesus’ agony in the Garden of Gethsemane (Mark 14:33 and Matthew 26:37). James was beheaded by order of King Herod Agrippa I of Judea; according to Spanish tradition, his body was taken to Santiago de Compostela, where his shrine attracts Christian pilgrims from all over the world.

The Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist:
“Jesus…is the living bread that gives life to the world. His Body is the true food in the form of bread; his Blood is the true drink in the form of wine. It isn’t simple nourishment to satisfy the body, like manna; the Body of Christ is the bread of the last times, capable of giving life, eternal life, because this bread is made of love.” – Pope Francis

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
The Christian life does not require wisdom, charisma, or strength—no, quite the opposite. To be Christian, we must embrace our faults, our littleness, our shortcomings—gather them up, and lay them all at the feet of Jesus. There, they will be transformed.

The first monthly Parish of Mary, Mother of Mercy Cemetery Collection will be the weekend of July 23rd. Our parish has two cemeteries. St. Francis Solanus

St. Francis Solanus Day:
In the United States, July 16 (this year it is a Sunday) is the feast day of St. Francis Solanus, the patron saint of one of Mary, Mother of Mercy Parish Churches in Interlaken, NY. St. Francis Solanus was born March 10, 1549 in Montilla, Spain and died on July 14, 1610 in Lima, Peru, South America. He was a very successful Franciscan missionary and is called the “Apostle of the Tucuman”, that is today northwestern Argentina and Paraguay.

Thank You:
Trumansburg Food Pantry sent a note thanking the Parish for the support. “Your kindness enables us to purchase food and personal care items for the families who benefit from our bi-monthly distributions.”

Christ Present in Bread and Wine:
We believe that through the power of the Holy Spirit and the prayer of the Church, bread and wine are changed into the Body and Blood of Christ. In the Liturgy of the Eucharist, the priest, praying with and for the people, makes the sacrifice of the cross real again by taking the bread and wine, asking God to bless it, then breaking the bread, and sharing it. Just as the apostles ate and drank at the Last Supper, we all eat and drink to be nourished to continue Christ’s saving work in the world. The Eucharistic Prayer is the center and heart of the whole Mass, and in it, the Church gives thanks to God for the whole work of salvation.

On July 14 from 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m., Branches Christian Rest & Renewal Center, Lodi, is holding a retreat themed Eucharistic Revival: A Eucharistic People Living a Eucharistic Life facilitated by Lena Shipley. It means looking at our clients and saying, “I see your life; I value your life. I see and value your children’s lives. Visit  usccb.org/ReligiousFreedomWeek to find a prayer intention for each day of that week and for more information.

Parish Cemeteries:

The monthly collection will certainly help cover the ordinary costs and hopefully continue to add to the Permanent Maintenance Fund. The dates for the monthly collection are yet to be formulated.

Mass Intention Requests:

Sanctuary Lamp:
In Catholic Churches, a candle is always lit to indicate that the Blessed Sacrament is present in the church. This candle is called the “sanctuary lamp.” Every week the candle or oil is renewed. This has been the custom at Holy Cross Church, Ovid and is now extended to St. James the Apostle and St. Francis Solanus Churches. In making the donation simply put on the envelope, “donation for the sanctuary lamp” and specify the week and, if so desired, your intention.

Parish Cemeteries:
Our parish has two cemeteries. Because the maintenance of our cemeteries is costly, cemeteries do not generate regular income, and our cemeteries do not have a fully funded Permanent Maintenance Fund, they are a financial burden to the parish. The Parish Cemetery Advisory Committee, after much discussion, have concluded to initiate for one year beginning in July, a monthly Parish Cemeteries Collection. The monthly collection will certainly help cover the ordinary costs and hopefully continue to add to the Permanent Maintenance Fund. The dates for the monthly collection are yet to be formulated.

Thank You from Birthright:
Birthright of Ithaca would like to thank all who participated in our annual Mother’s Day flower sale. Easter Duty:
All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year. The precept must be fulfilled during the Easter season unless it is fulfilled for a just cause at some other time during the year. In reference to this law the Easter season is considered from the First Sunday of Lent until Trinity Sunday (this year June 4). (Church Law #920)

And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim. (Acts 2:4)

Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth. (Ps. 104)
Or
Alleluia.

Second Reading:
For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we were all given to drink of one Spirit. (2 Cor. 12:13)

Gospel:
Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” (Jn. 20:21-22)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
The disciples at Pentecost were given the grace to speak in the tongues of many nations. When we engage with those who do not believe, who disagree with us, are we speaking the right language? We have to use the words they are able to understand—not just the words we want to say.
