Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:

When the world sees us, do they see to whom we belong? In what ways are we most manifestly Christian? In prayer, in service, in sacrifice? Whatever it is, let us devote ourselves to it with one accord, so that Jesus Christ may be glorified in all that we do.

Christ Present in Ministry. Among the many ways Christ is present at Mass is in the ministry of the ordained priest who leads the assembly in the celebration. Praying with and in the name of the assembly gathered, the priest acts in the person of Christ who is the Head of the Church in the celebration of the Eucharist. Throughout the Eucharistic Prayer, the priest prays on behalf of and as part of the community, in the plural person: “Let us give thanks…We come to you with praise and thanksgiving…” Through the deacon and other ministers, we also encounter Jesus.

Parish Council Nominations:
Parishioners interested in being on the Parish Council can now nominate themselves or be nominated by other parishioners. The selection of new Parish Council members for a three -year term and the selection of three alternates for a one-year term will take place on Sunday, May 28. Newly selected members will attend the June 8 Parish Council meeting. The term of membership begins July 1. Paper ballots are available in the back of the churches or the ballot may be completed online from this link. Parishioners, please consider being a Council member or nominating a parishioner.

Diocesan Missions Sunday:
Today is Diocesan Missions Sunday, a day to honor the missionary efforts of the Sisters of St. Joseph and the Sisters of Mercy working and serving the needs of our brothers and sisters in Brazil and Chile. We are called to take part in the missionary work of the church. We may not all have to move to another town or city to do so, but impelled by the Holy Spirit, each one of us is to move beyond our daily concerns, important as they are, to help others live in the faith that sustains us. May we share the gift of faith today by helping our missionary friends with our prayers and a generous gift.

Pentecost Sunday:
Next Sunday is Pentecost Sunday, the end of the Easter Season and the celebration of the followers of Jesus being gifted with the Holy Spirit. In keeping with the liturgical color of the day, everyone is invited to wear red articles of clothing when coming to Mass.

Pentecost Brunch at Holy Cross—Next Sunday:
The dish-to-pass Pentecost brunch will take place next Sunday, May 28, following the 10:30 a.m. Mass in the Holy Cross Rectory. There will be a sign-up sheet in the back of Holy Cross Church. Everyone is welcome to this grand parish event.

Family Hope Center:
The Family Hope Center has two locations: one in Geneva and a satellite location in Ovid in the Holy Cross Church Rectory. Family Hope Center fights for life by valuing life above all else. It means offering support through free pregnancy tests, a limited ultrasound referral, parenting and life skills classes, bible studies, material aid such as diapers and clothing, and through our forgiven and set free post abortion study. It means looking at our clients and saying, “I see your life; I value your life. I see and value your children’s lives. You are important and loved.” Women come to the Family Hope Center to be valued. The Pregnancy Care Center of the Finger Lakes is located at 551 Exchange St. in Geneva with an office in Ovid at 7231 Main St. “If you regret your abortion, you are not alone. Let us help you learn to forgive yourself.” To learn more visit familyhopecentergeneva.org, call 315–789–0708, text: 315-945-1019, or email .

Prayers for Our Parish:
The Sisters of St. Joseph have a prayer ministry for the Diocese of Rochester. Sister Anne Marie Burns and Sister Dolores Bachman will be praying for our parish and parishioners throughout 2023. We thank the Sisters for their thoughtfulness and kindness toward us. In our appreciation, please keep the Sisters of St. Joseph, especially Sisters Anne Marie and Dolores, in your thoughts and prayers.

Mass Intention Requests:
Those wishing to have someone remembered at a Mass may fill out a Mass Intentions Request form which is automatically submitted to the church office. You may also phone the parish office (607-294-0064) with your request or fill out one of the paper forms available in the foyer of each church and either mail it to the parish office or put it in the collection. There are several reasons why a person may ask a priest to offer a Mass for another individual: in thanksgiving; for the intentions of another person (such as on a birthday); or, as is most common, for the repose of the soul and in memory of someone who has died.

Sanctuary Lamp:
In Catholic Churches, a candle is always lit to indicate that the Blessed Sacrament is present in the church. This candle is called the “sanctuary lamp.” Every week the candle or oil is renewed. In many churches, people donate to the church for the sanctuary lamp be lit for the week for the intention of the donor. This has been the custom at Holy Cross Church, Ovid and is now extended to St. James the Apostle and St. Francis Solanus Churches. In making the donation simply put on the envelope, “donation for the sanctuary lamp” and specify the week and, if so desired, your intention.

Cancer Services Program (CSP):
Cortland and Tompkins Counties offer free cancer screenings to those who are uninsured or have health insurance that does not cover these screenings. The screening services are provided in local health centers, doctors’ offices, and hospitals. For more information, contact CSP at 866 442 2262.

Prayer Intentions:
Please feel free to add your prayer requests in the books available for that purpose in each church. The prayer requests of fellow parishioners are listed on the parish website (see PRAYERS in top bar). You may also add a request by emailing the parish at or phoning the parish office at 607–294–0064 and it will be added to the list.

Let Us Pray: Please remember in your prayers those members of our parish who are in the hospital, sick at home, in a nursing home, or who have requested our prayers (see the list on the parish’s PRAYERS page). We also ask you to pray for those who have died. May the Lord bring comfort to their family and friends during this difficult time and may they find hope in the Resurrection.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Sometimes we look for God in all the wrong places. We are paralyzed with fear, with self-doubt, with despair. Let’s not forget the extraordinary miracles we have witnessed this Easter season. Let us bring the memory of this holy time with us into the rest of our year.

National Eucharistic Revival:
Christ Present in Bread and Wine. We believe that through the power of the Holy Spirit and the prayer of the Church, bread and wine are changed into the Body and Blood of Christ. In the Liturgy of the Eucharist, the priest, praying with and for the people, makes the sacrifice of the cross real again by taking the bread and wine, asking God to bless it, then breaking the bread, and sharing it. Just as the apostles ate and drank at the Last Supper, we all eat and drink to be nourished to continue Christ’s saving work in the world. The Eucharistic Prayer is the center and heart of the whole Mass, and in it, the Church gives thanks to God for the whole work of salvation.

Community Dinner:
The Ovid Federated Church is sponsoring a free community dinner on Thursday, May 25, 2023 from 4:00-6:00 p.m.

Mother’s Day:
Today we praise God for our mothers. Their continued loving service is rejoiced in and is an inspiration for us to imitate. We pray God to bless all mothers in our parish family and beyond. “Mothers enjoy the day dedicated to you. Rejoice in the expressions of love, reverence and gratitude that you receive this day.” For you this day we pray: “Loving God, as a mother gives life and nourishment to her children, so you watch over your Church. Bless the mothers of our parish that they may be strengthened as Christian mothers. Let the example of their faith and love shine forth. Grant that we, their sons and daughters, may honor them always with a spirit of profound respect. Grant this through Christ our Lord.”

Birthright of Ithaca Mothers’ Day Flower Sale:
Birthright of Ithaca is an organization that helps women in crisis or with unplanned pregnancies. We offer free and confidential services ranging from self-administered pregnancy tests, maternity and baby clothing, diapers and formula, referral services, counseling, and financial aid. Our flower sale this year will be held after all Masses during the weekend of May 13th and 14th. Please help us support families in need within our community. This year flowers will be sold for $2.00 per stem or $5.00 for 3 stems (cash only).

Ascension Thursday:
This Thursday, May 18th, is the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord, marking 40 days since the celebration of Jesus’s resurrection and victory over death. The Ascension is a holy day of obligation, that is Catholics are obliged to attend Mass unless gravely inconvenienced. The places and times of the Masses are: 9:00 a.m. at St. James the Apostle, Trumansburg and 6:00 p.m. at Holy Cross, Ovid.

Diocesan Missions Sunday:
For over fifty years, the Sisters of St. Joseph have labored in Brazil and the Sisters of Mercy in Chile. Next weekend, May 20 and 21, we call upon you to help with your prayers and sacrificial gift, so that they may continue to bring Christ into a world where darkness, despair and emptiness prevail.

Thank you:
Bishop Matano has written a letter to the parish expressing “Thanks” for exceeding our assigned goal in contributions and pledges for the 2022-2023 Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA). “Your commitment to supporting the mission of our Diocese, to love God above all things, and to serve our neighbors in need, for love of Him, is deeply encouraging. … I pray that the Lord will continue to bless your parish family.”

The parish CMA (Catholic Ministries Appeal) given goal was $31,000. One hundred and two parish households have pledged $31,521 or 101.68 % of the goal. Pledges can be made until the end of May. The parish will receive a rebate of half of what is over goal.

National Eucharistic Revival:
Catholics encounter God in the celebration of the sacraments. In Holy Communion, we share in God’s own life through the sacrament of Jesus’s own Body and Blood. Even though we receive the “whole Christ” – body, blood, soul, and divinity – when we receive Communion under the form of bread alone, receiving Communion also from the chalice is a more complete participation in the Eucharist. In the sign of consecrated wine, we see Jesus’s blood outpoured for us. We keep this in mind even though the Covid pandemic has limited the distribution of the blood of Christ currently.

Statewide Eucharistic Congress:
A statewide Eucharistic Congress will take place in New York on October 20–22, 2023 at Our Lady of Martyrs Shrine in Auriesville. The Eucharistic Congress is part of a national effort to reinvigorate devotion to the Eucharist on a national level, aiming to restore understanding and fidelity to the great mystery of Jesus really and truly present in the Eucharist, and to encourage all Catholics to make the Eucharist the source and summit of their faith.

The bishops of NYS have launched an easy-to-use website nyseucharisticcongress.org to provide comprehensive information and updates for the historic three-day event looking forward to welcoming upwards to 10,000 people. Posters regarding the event are in the foyer of the Church.

Trumansburg Food Pantry News:
To better serve the community, the Trumansburg food pantry will have new hours on beginning on Monday, May 8.  The pantry will now be open from 3:30–6:30 p.m. (with no morning distribution) which extends the time customers can pick up groceries. The pantry, located in the United Methodist Church, 80 E Main Street, will still be open every other Monday and will have the regular foods available plus additional items from time to time.  All are welcome.

Next Sunday (May 14) at St. James non-perishable food items may be donated on a table in front of the Blessed Mother statue. They will be given to the Trumansburg Food Pantry.
Prayers for Our Parish:

We know the voice of our shepherd. We know he speaks a language of love, of patience, of long-suffering sacrifice. The voice of the thief will offer us freedom, but it is a freedom that ends in destruction. There is only one gate that leads to everlasting life.

With the celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation, Daniel and Erin will complete their full initiation into the Kingdom of God. Third Sunday of Easter Sunday ~ April 23, 2023

National Eucharistic Revival: June 19, 2022–Pentecost 2025

First Reading:
“This man, delivered up by the set plan and foreknowledge of God, you killed, using lawless men to crucify him. But God raised him up, releasing him from the throes of death, because it was impossible for him to be held by it.” (Acts 2:23-24)

Psalm:
Lord, you will show us the path of life. (Ps. 16)
Or
Alleluia.

Second Reading:
Conduct yourselves with reverence during the time of your sojourning, realizing that you were ransomed from your futile conduct, handed on by your ancestors, not with perishable things like silver or gold but with the precious blood of Christ as of a spotless unblemished lamb. (1 Pt. 1:17-19)

Gospel:
And it happened that, while he was with them at table, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them. With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he vanished from their sight. (Lk. 24:30-31)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
It wasn’t until Christ spoke the words of blessing over the bread that the eyes of the disciples were opened, and they saw him for who he was — God in flesh and blood before them. The Eucharist makes real what we otherwise would fail to see.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Doubting Thomas is a mood, and we’ve all had it. We hang our every hope on this sign, that proof. We challenge God: “Make me believe.” To each of us he extends his wounded hand, to each of us he shows his pierced side. He will always meet us in our unbelief.

You Are What You Eat:
Most of us remember from our childhood using this phrase in fun. However, this expression describes well our experience of Holy Communion. When we consume earthly food, it is absorbed into our system, digested, converted into energy or waste; our food becomes part of us. Yet when we receive Holy Communion, we become united with Jesus Christ so much that we truly become what we receive. Jesus became human so that we might become divine, and in the Eucharist, we truly gain a share in God’s own life.

Distribution of Holy Communion:
The parish received the minutes of the Diocesan Presbyteral (Priests) Council of March 3, 2023. The minutes contained Bishop Matano’s Pastoral Reflections. Among the reflections, resulting from a discussion he had with the Council membership, was the topic of the reception of Holy Communion under both species (the Body and Blood of Christ). What resulted from the discussion is that at this time it is not opportune to offer the Precious Blood in parishes sighting among other concerns hygiene and contagion. Therefore, Holy Communion will continue to be distributed in the Diocese under one species, the Body of Christ.

Happy Easter:
The Lord has indeed risen, alleluia. Glory and kingship be his forever and ever. Enjoy this holy day and season rejoicing in Jesus’s victory over death and the fact that he shares that victory with us. We have been promised heaven. May this promise always be a source of hope and strength in times of trouble. Rejoice and be glad.

Parish Easter Offering:
There is one collection on Easter. In previous years parishioners generally increase their offering by being more generous on that day than usual. The parish has come to rely on the Easter offering collection. Please do what you are able. Thank you.

Annual Easter Egg Hunt:
All are welcome to participate in the Easter egg hunt on Easter Sunday after the 9:00 a.m. Mass at St. James the Apostle!  Join us!

Divine Mercy Sunday and Service:
Next Sunday, April 16th, is the Second Sunday of Easter also known as the Sunday of Divine Mercy. This day is a reminder to always celebrate that God’s love conquers all adversity.

At 3:00 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, 113 N. Geneva Street, Ithaca, Deacon George Kozak will be leading a Divine Mercy Service with recitation of the Divine Mercy Chaplet, the Rosary, and Adoration and Benediction. All are welcome.

Word of Life:
“Like us, Christ entered the world through the womb of a woman. He willingly experienced the fullness of human suffering. He breathed his last on the Cross at Calvary in order that He might save us. Therefore, ‘God is the foundation of hope: not any god, but the God who has a human face and who has loved us to the end’ (Spe salvi 31).”

The Doctrine of Concomitance:
“Christ is ‘truly, really and substantially contained’ in Holy Communion.” His presence is not momentary or simply signified, but wholly and permanently real under each of the consecrated species of bread and wine.” (Norms for the Distribution and Reception of Holy Communion under Both Kinds in the United States of America, No. 8). As relates to the distribution of Holy Communion under both species, the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, No. 282, states: “Above all, they (the pastors) should instruct the faithful that the Catholic faith teaches that Christ, whole and entire, and the true Sacrament, is received even under only one species and hence that as regards the resulting fruits, those who receive under only one species are not deprived of any grace that is necessary for salvation.

2022-23 Catholic Ministries Appeal:
Our given parish goal is $31,000. Ninety-six parish households have thus far pledged $29,055 which represents 93.73% of the goal. If you have not yet made a pledge, please do so soon. Pledge envelopes are available in the foyer of the church. Your pledge helps support important Diocesan programs, services and ministries within our parish and the diocese. “Thank you” to all who have already participated in the Appeal.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Our relationship with Christ should leave us mesmerized—“shaken,” like Biblical Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. It should leave our jaws hanging. If it does not, we should ask ourselves: what needs to change?

This ritual will take place during the Mass of the Lord’s Supper at 7:00 p.m. at St. James the Apostle Church. We need 12 adult parishioners to volunteer to participate in this rite. There are sign-up sheets in the foyers of the Church.

Pontifical Good Friday Collection:
Pope Francis has asked our parish to support the Pontifical Good Friday Collection, which helps Christians in the Holy Land, where they are not less than 2% of the population. Your support is essential to help the Church minister in parishes, provide Catholic schools, and offer religious education. The collection also helps to preserve the sacred shrines of Christianity, including in Jerusalem, Nazareth, and Bethlehem, to name only a few. When you contribute to the Good Friday Collection, you join with Catholics around the world in solidarity with the Church in the Holy Land. Please be generous. For more information about Christians in the Holy Land, visit www.custodia.org.

Ninety-six parish households have thus far pledged $28,605 which represents 92.27% of the goal. If you have not yet made a pledge, please do so soon. Pledge envelopes are available in the foyer of the church. Your pledge helps support important Diocesan programs, services and ministries within our parish and the diocese. “Thank you” to all who have already participated in the Appeal.

Parish Easter Offering:
There is one collection on Easter. In previous years parishioners generally increase their offering by being more generous on that day than usual. The parish has come to rely on the Easter offering collection. Please do what you are able. Thank you.

Healing and Harmony/Book Study/Taizé Prayer:
These weekly events held in the Pine Room at St. James the Apostle on Wednesdays and Thursdays will be cancelled on April 5 & 6 as it is Holy Week.

“SouperBowl” Sunday:
On the weekend of February 12, parishioners participated in “SouperBowl” Sunday and contributed $807.00 for the local food pantries. This is exceptional and praiseworthy. The food pantries: Trumansburg, Interlaken and Ovid were most appreciative.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
The blind man showed great bravery by speaking of Christ’s miracle in the face of the Pharisees’ disdain. But then, how could he ignore the truth, once he had seen it? It would be a form of blindness worse than the absence of physical sight. To deny Christ would be a blindness he chose for himself.

Join our appeal and give back what you can so that we remain strong and able to do God’s great work. Thank you to everyone who has responded with a gift or pledge.

Please take time this week to pray the rosary for an end to the COVID-19 pandemic and for world peace, especially in Ukraine.

Parishioners requesting a Mass intention for a particular date and time can do so by completing the “Mass Intentions Request Form” located in the foyers of the churches. Mass intentions may also be requested by phoning the parish office.
