Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
God invites each of us to work in His vineyard, but it’s our choice whether we “clock in” or stay home. Let’s never fail to show up. It’s the most important job we will ever have.

Parish Eucharistic Revival – June 2023–June 2024:
Every parish throughout the United States is inviting parishioners to: Reinvigorate Worship by parishes diligently being faithful to the norms prescribed for the celebration of the Eucharistic Liturgy (Mass); provide monthly holy hour Encounter Nights to help parishioners personally encounter Jesus in the Eucharist; create a Faith Formation opportunity through a small group seven session study guide titled “Jesus and the Eucharist”; and to launch an “Invite One Back” initiative, that is, reaching out to one who has abandoned the gift of Jesus himself, the Eucharist.

With the help of Patrick Miller, who is our Eucharistic Revival Point Person and the Parish Council, especially the Worship and Word Committees, our parish will begin to schedule, in October, events proposed for the Parish Eucharistic Revival.

NYS Eucharistic Congress:
This event will be held October 20–22, 2023 at Our Lady of Martyrs Shrine, Auriesville, NY. We need a parishioner to plan and organize our participation in this Congress. One vision is to arrange a parish bus trip. If you, or know of anyone who can organize such an event, please notify the parish office. Thank you. For more information on the Eucharistic Congress go to nyseucharisticcongress.org.

Parish Cemeteries Second Collection:
Next weekend there is a second collection to benefit the Mary, Mother of Mercy parish cemeteries. The cemeteries do not generate regular income and do not have a fully funded Permanent Maintenance Fund. Please give what you are able as this collection helps to defray costly maintenance expenses. Donations may also be made online using WeShare Online Giving. Thank you.

2023-2024 Catholic Ministries Appeal:
Our Diocese of Rochester has launched the 2023-2024 Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA) to serve people in need; provide diocesan wide services to parishes and institutions; support seminarians, Deacons and Pastoral Leaders; educate the young in the Catholic faith, fund the operation of diocesan offices/ministries, etc. The CMA goal is $6,725,000. Our given parish goal is $31,000. As in the past, please participate in the Appeal. Participation is primary, what is pledged is secondary.

Programs at St. James the Apostle:

  • Prayer for Healing and Harmony meets on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month at 7:00 p.m. and every Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. This time of silent prayer provides an opportunity for personal reflection and healing. The session closes with a time to share any reflections that came to you.
  • The Taizé Prayer is facilitated on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month at 7:30 p.m. Taizé Prayer was developed by an ecumenical community of monks in Taizé, France. It consists of readings and prayers interspersed with quiet, repetitive songs—a good way to quiet your soul and psyche after a busy day.
  • Every Wednesday at 3:15 p.m., all are invited to participate in a book study. The current book is Wisdom Distilled from the Daily by Joan Chittiston.

Questions? Contact Sister Anne at 607-209-4206 or a.alder1980@gmail.com

Family Hope Center:
The Family Hope Center has two locations: one in Geneva and a satellite location in Ovid in the Holy Cross Church Rectory. Family Hope Center fights for life by valuing life above all else. It means offering support through free pregnancy tests, a limited ultrasound referral, parenting and life skills classes, bible studies, material aid such as diapers and clothing, and through our forgiven and set free post abortion study. It means looking at our clients and saying, “I see your life; I value your life. I see and value your children’s lives. You are important and loved.” Women come to the Family Hope Center to be valued. The Pregnancy Care Center of the Finger Lakes is located at 551 Exchange St. in Geneva with an office in Ovid at 7231 Main St. “If you regret your abortion, you are not alone. Let us help you learn to forgive yourself.” To learn more visit familyhopecentergeneva.org, call 315–789–0708, text: 315-945-1019, or email familyhopecenter@outlook.com.

Prayers for Our Parish:
The Sisters of St. Joseph have a prayer ministry for the Diocese of Rochester. Sister Anne Marie Burns and Sister Dolores Bachman will be praying for our parish and parishioners throughout 2023. We thank the Sisters for their thoughtfulness and kindness toward us. In our appreciation, please keep the Sisters of St. Joseph, especially Sisters Anne Marie and Dolores, in your thoughts and prayers.

Mass Intention Requests:
Those wishing to have someone remembered at a Mass may fill out a Mass Intentions Request form which is automatically submitted to the church office. You may also phone the parish office (607-294-0064) with your request or fill out one of the paper forms available in the foyer of each church and either mail it to the parish office or put it in the collection. There are several reasons why a person may ask a priest to offer a Mass for another individual: in thanksgiving; for the intentions of another person (such as on a birthday); or, as is most common, for the repose of the soul and in memory of someone who has died.

Sanctuary Lamp:
In Catholic Churches, a candle is always lit to indicate that the Blessed Sacrament is present in the church. This candle is called the “sanctuary lamp.” Every week the candle or oil is renewed. In many churches, people donate to the church for the sanctuary lamp be lit for the week for the intention of the donor. This has been the custom at Holy Cross Church, Ovid and is now extended to St. James the Apostle and St. Francis Solanus Churches. In making the donation simply put on the envelope, “donation for the sanctuary lamp” and specify the week and, if so desired, your intention.

Cancer Services Program (CSP):
Cortland and Tompkins Counties offer free cancer screenings to those who are uninsured or have health insurance that does not cover these screenings. The screening services are provided in local health centers, doctors’ offices, and hospitals. For more information, contact CSP at 866 442 2262.

Prayer Intentions:
Please feel free to add your prayer requests in the books available for that purpose in each church. The prayer requests of fellow parishioners are listed on the parish website (see PRAYERS in top bar). You may also add a request by emailing the parish at immmercy@dor.org or phoning the parish office at 607–294–0064 and it will be added to the list.

Let Us Pray: Please remember in your prayers those members of our parish who are in the hospital, sick at home, in a nursing home, or who have requested our prayers (see the list on the parish’s PRAYERS page). We also ask you to pray for those who have died. May the Lord bring comfort to their family and friends during this difficult time and may they find hope in the Resurrection.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
Let us never make the grave mistake of assuming we earn our salvation in the same way we earn a wage. It is a gift lavished upon us by a God who does not count the hours of our labor or measure the amount of our output.

Thank you also to the many volunteers who stepped up and offered their time and energy to the success of this event. The rain held off, and all were comfortable in the boathouse and on the dock. The meal was great – thanks to all for the dish to pass selections. The socializing, as usual, excelled. A good time for the parish.

Catholic Campaign for Human Development:
Please be generous in this week’s special collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD). Through this collection, you support programs that address the root causes of poverty and provide a sustainable future for those struggling across the country.

They include a refugee organization, a small enterprise that provides employment to women in addiction recovery, and a land trust of low-income people becoming homeowners in inner city Rochester. In addition, 25% of the funds will remain in our diocese to fund smaller anti-poverty projects. Please prayerfully consider how you can support this collection and support those working on the margins. Learn more about the Catholic Campaign for Human Development at www.usccb.org/cchd.

Psalm:
My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God. (Ps. 63)

Second Reading:
I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, your spiritual worship. (Rom. 12:1)

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
A love of suffering does not come naturally to us as humans. We have no instinct to throw our arms around a rough and heavy cross—no, we shy away from it. But as adopted children of God, crafted lovingly in His image, our inheritance is the grace to do what feels so impossible.

  2. Follow the directions under the “Donate Online” section.
  3. Set up your donation or payment.

“Who do you say that I am?” Let our whole lives be the answer, given not in words, but in action. If the world looked at your life, your decisions, your words, and your deeds, would they conclude that you are a person who believes Christ is the son of the living God?

Diocese of Rochester Permanent Diaconate:
The deacon is a man of faith, who is called from the community that already recognizes his dedication to service. He makes a lifetime commitment to serving the People of God by proclaiming the Word, assisting and presiding at liturgies, and ministering in the areas of charity and social justice. A deacon gives witness to his availability to the community by addressing present and emerging needs of the Church.

The Diocese is inviting interested men of strong and active faith, who can demonstrate a record of service in the communities in which they live, work and worship, who may wish to explore a possible call to ordained ministry as a permanent deacon, to first speak with their pastor for an initial conversation. They may also contact Deacon Edward Giblin, Director of the Office of the Permanent Diaconate, at edward.giblin@dor.org, for additional information.

A potential candidate must be at least 35 years of age and no older than 62 years of age at the time of ordination after a five (5) year period of formation. He must be in good health, emotionally mature, have stable relationships and must have the wholehearted support of his wife (if married) and family to enter the phase of inquiry.

Because the parish is the primary experience of Church for most inquirers, the parish community is asked as well to invite from among its members men who exhibit strong faith and a spirit of service and encourage them to consider a possible vocation to the permanent diaconate.

Christ is always coming to us in ways that we do not expect. Ways that shock us. Ways that frighten us. Ways that seem impossible. Are we ready to accept him however he comes, amidst whatever fear and doubt we are battling with in our hearts?

  • 9:00 a.m. at St. James the Apostle Church, Trumansburg
  • 6:00 p.m. at Holy Cross Church, Ovid.

Cemetery Collection:
On the weekend of July 23rd, the parish initiated, for one year, a monthly collection for the support of our two Parish Cemeteries. The collection amounted to $1,268. This is most helpful and appreciated. “Thank you.” The cemetery collection will usually be taken up on the Second Sunday of each month. The next one will be this weekend, August 12/13. Again “Thank you.”

Fr. Richard Crawley, OFM Cap.:
This coming Saturday, August 19th, Fr. Richard will be concluding his ministry as Catholic Chaplain at the Moravia Correction Facility and leaving St. Fidelis Friary for his new assignment given him by the Capuchin Franciscans of the Province of St. Mary, New York-New England to be the Administrator of two churches in West Rutland, VT, St. Bridget, and St. Stanislaus.

Our parish “Thanks” Fr. Richard for the help he has given in the parish and the help he has been at the Friary. The Parish of the Good Shepherd Catholic Community of Aurora, Moravia, King Ferry and Union Springs thank Fr. Richard also for celebrating Sunday Mass in their parish. The parish and friars will miss him. We wish him joy and happiness in his new assignment.

Parish Picnic:
Mark your calendars. All are invited to the annual Parish of Mary, Mother of Mercy Picnic to celebrate our parish feast day, Mary, Mother of Mercy. The picnic is Sunday, September 10, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Fidelis Friary, Boathouse, 7790 County Rd 153, Interlaken. The Fellowship Committee needs volunteers to assist with set up and clean up. Please contact the parish office at 607-294-0064 if you would like to help. Thank you!

Family Faith Formation:
Each year, the Catholic Church in the United States designates the third Sunday in September as “Catechetical Sunday” – a day on which to celebrate and pray for the Church’s mission to teach the Gospel to all people. The theme for Catechetical Sunday 2023 is “Renewing the Church and Families of Faith.”

Our parish Family Faith Formation program will begin on September 17th. Families with children in grades K-7 are invited to join. The format of this program includes a workbook to be done weekly at home and a monthly gathering with food, activities, and a discussion with Fr. Bernard Maloney.

This program incorporates First Holy Communion and First Reconciliation preparation for children in first and second grade and those who have not yet received it. Please register by September 1st so books may be ordered. Contact Susan Guydosh at susan.guydosh@dor.org or phone the parish office at 607-294-0064 to register.

A Reminder:
Our parish has three churches. When donating by check, do not to make the check out to a particular church. Please make the check out to The Parish of Mary, Mother of Mercy or simply Mary, Mother of Mercy Parish.

The Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist:
You are what you eat. Most of us remember from our childhood using this phrase in fun. However, this expression describes well our experience of Holy Communion. When we consume earthly food, it is absorbed into our system, digested, converted into energy; our food becomes part of us. When we receive Holy Communion, we become united with Jesus so much that we truly become what we receive. Jesus became human so that we might become divine, and in the Eucharist, we truly gain a share in God’s own life.

Super Event:
During the National Eucharistic Revival (June 22 – June 2025) there will be a NYS Eucharistic Congress, October 20 – 22, 2023 at Our Lady of Martyrs Shrine, Auriesville, NY. (The Shrine marks the sacred spot where the North American Martyrs gave their lives for Christ and where St. Kateri Tekakwitha was born.) The event will include Mass with Cardinal Dolan and the NY Bishops, Confessions, Speakers Eucharistic Adoration and Procession. To find out more, visit nyseucharisticcongress.org.

Donating to Your Parish:
Online giving by WeShare is safe, simple and convenient. It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3:

  1. Visit the parish website’s giving page: marymotherofmercy.com/giving
  2. Follow the directions under the “Donate Online” section.
  3. Set up your donation or payment.

That’s it! Your account will be created and you can put away your checkbook. If you experience any problem, please e-mail Eileen at eileen.heptig@dor.org.

Taizé Prayer:
On the first and third Thursday of the month, Sister Anne Alderman, SSJ leads the Taizé Prayer in the Pine Room at St. James the Apostle, Trumansburg. Taizé Prayer was developed by an ecumenical community of monks in Taizé, France. It consists of readings and prayers interspersed with quiet, repetitive songs—a good way to quiet your soul and psyche after a busy day. Contact Sister Anne at 607–209–4206 or a.alder1980@gmail.com for more information.

Branches Lakeside Retreat:
On August 24th from 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m, Branches Lakeside Retreat will sponsor a day themed The Sacrifice of the Mass. The presenters will be Deacon Ward Nolan and Jayne Badano-Bidwell. They will present the biblical roots of the liturgy and uncover the meaning of each part of the Holy Mass, the means by which we encounter God in a most profound way. Rev. Jeffrey Tunnicliff will celebrate Mass at 3:00 p.m. To register visit branchescenter.org or phone 716-901-4313.

Notre Dame Retreat House:
There is a free, one-day retreat on August 19 at Notre Dame Retreat House, Canandaigua. Space is limited, please call 585-394-5700 or email ndretreat@rochester.rr.com to reserve your ticket. Visit notredameretreat.org for more details.

Prayer for Healing and Harmony:
Sister Anne Alderman, SSJ leads a time of silent prayer on Wednesdays at 2:00 p.m. in the Pine Room at St. James the Apostle, Trumansburg. The extended time of shared silence provides an opportunity for personal reflection and healing. The session closes with a time to share any reflections that came to you. You do not need to attend every session. Questions? Call Sister Anne at 607–209–4206 or email a.alder1980@gmail.com.

The Transfiguration of the Lord ~ August 6, 2023

National Eucharistic Revival:    June 19, 2022–Pentecost 2025

Parish Eucharistic Revival:       June 11, 2023–June 2024

First Reading:
His clothing was bright as snow, and the hair on his head as white as wool; his throne was flames of fire, with wheels of burning fire. (Dn. 7:9)

Psalm:
The Lord is king, the Most High over all the earth. (Ps. 97)

Second Reading:
When that unique declaration came to him from the majestic glory, “This is my Son, my beloved, with whom I am well pleased.” We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven while we were with him on the holy mountain. (2 Pt. 1:17-18)

Gospel:
And he was transfigured before them; his face shone like the sun and his clothes became white as light. (Mt. 17:2)

Excerpts from the Lectionary for Mass ©2001, 1998, 1970 CCD. The English translation of Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week:
“Do not tell the vision to anyone until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead,” Jesus told his disciples. Why keep such an amazing thing as the Transfiguration a secret? Because the world wasn’t ready for the end of the story yet. Sometimes, the glory only makes sense after the trials.

Missionary Cooperation Plan – Visiting Missionary:
This weekend, Brother John Buckingham, CFC will be speaking at the weekend Masses. He will share the Edmund Rice Christian Brothers mission work in Latin America, especially Peru, Bolivia, and Uruguay.

The Congregation of Christian Brothers was founded in 1802 by Blessed Edmund Rice (1762-1844) in Waterford, Ireland to educate the poor and marginalized youth. By the end of the twentieth century the Congregation opened many primary and secondary schools, colleges, and orphanages in many different countries. Today, the Brothers serve as teachers, mentors, social workers, and community development professionals in some of the poorest regions of the world. The needs are great, and it is only through the financial generosity of people in North America that the Congregation can continue to bring the Good News of Jesus through a good Catholic education to those who are less fortunate.
