Religion Education:
Parents/guardians of school age children should have received a letter at the beginning of August announcing that classes will begin September 18. The letter also contained a registration form. Please return the registration form as soon as possible. Parents: please schedule and attend the parents/guardians meeting on Tuesday, September 6 at St. James the Apostle Church at 7:00 p.m.
Parish Choir:
The first rehearsal/meeting is this Tuesday, August 30, at the Parish Center, St. Francis Solanus, Interlaken, at 6:30 p.m. in the church. All Mary, Mother of Mercy parishioners, and others, are most welcome. Transportation will be provided for those in need. As a reminder, The Roman Catholic Church’s directive from the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) states under The Importance of Singing # 40: “Great importance should therefore be attached to the use of singing in the celebration of the Mass, with due consideration for the culture of peoples and abilities of each liturgical assembly. Although it is not always necessary (e.g., in weekday Masses ) to sing all the texts that are in principle meant to be sung, every care should be taken that singing by the ministers and the people not be absent in celebrations that occur on Sundays and on Holy Days of Obligation.”
5:00 p.m. Vigil Mass:
Parishioners have volunteered to be musicians and cantors at the Saturday evening vigil Mass. It is a hoped that they will be able to begin soon.
Marriage Annulments:
Pope Francis has simplified the process to determine the nullity of a marriage. There is a renewed emphasis on the primacy of the person and making the process more accessible to the person. Those seeking an annulment will now work closely with the parish minister in conjunction with the Diocesan Marriage Tribunal. Cases presented can be resolved within six months. There is now no fee (cost) for the process.
Making Contributions by Check:
The parish of Mary, Mother of Mercy, is yet to be civilly incorporated, therefore checks cannot be made out in that name. For the present time, please make checks out in the name of the church, that is, to St. James the Apostle, or St. Francis Solanus, or Holy Cross.
Gardening Around St James the Apostle Church:
A request is being made from the St. James Buildings and Grounds Committee for volunteers (individuals and/or families) to take on responsibility for one of the gardens around the church, that is, gardening required for: a) the Marian Shrine, or b) in front of the church; or c) in front of the rectory or d) on the back side of the Annex between the church and the rectory, or e) the back yard (church/rectory). This would be a great service project for students looking for service hours. Parishioners interested and able please phone the St. James Parish Office.
Scripture Study:
Any parishioners who would like to deepen their faith through a better understanding of Scripture are welcome to join an informal study of the Gospel According to Mark. The first session will start on Tuesday, September 13, 2016, after the 9 a.m. mass (St James the Apostle Church), and will be facilitated by Debbie Short and Camille Taranto. Anyone interested in Scripture study may just come the first session or any subsequent sessions. The Liguori Catholic Bible Study for The Gospel According to Mark will be used as a supplemental text and will be provided for all participants. Food donation are accepted on the second Sunday of the month. Please place food and money donations on the table located in front of the Blessed Virgin Mary’s statue.
Don’t Let Your Veggies Grow Up To Be Compost:
Due to poverty, about 1 in 5 kids in our community might not eat a decent meal today. Elderly people and others are affected as well. Altogether, about 14% of our neighbors experience food insecurity. If you have extra produce (fruit, vegetables, and eggs) from your garden or CSA share, please drop it off in the cooler at 94 W. Main Street, Trumansburg on Mondays until October. All food will be donated to local families. Your donation counts! Thank you, Maria Connell.
Community Lunch Program Annual Hoedown for Hunger:
Catholic Charities of the Finger Lakes Community lunch program’s Annual Hoedown for Hunger will take place on Wednesday, September 14, beginning at 5:00 p.m. at the Geneva on the Lake. Magnificat Rochester

Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy:
The origin of the Christian Jubilee goes back to Old Testament times. The Law of Moses prescribed a special year for the Jewish people to make restitution for wrongs committed, to forgive debts owed, and set slaves free. In the Roman Catholic tradition, a Holy Year or Jubilee is a great religious event, for the forgiveness of sins and the punishment due to sin. A Jubilee is a year of reconciliation between adversaries. It is a time of solidarity, hope, justice and commitment to serve God with joy and in peace with our brothers and sisters. The guiding principle of the year: “Be merciful just as your Father is merciful.”

Sister Susan Schantz, SSJ, continues to pray for St. James the Apostle church in Trumansburg. Let us keep Sr. Susan and the Sisters of St. Joseph in our prayers.
Toiletries and Hygiene Products:
There is a basket in the vestibule of the church for donations of toiletries. The request comes from Catholic Charities which is in need of items like shampoo, toothpaste, diapers etc. The items will be transferred to the Catholic Charities Office in Ithaca.
Cancer Services Program (Cortland and Tompkins Counties):
This a program that provides free cancer screenings (breast, cervical, and colorectal) to women from ages 40–64 and men ages 50–64, who are uninsured or have health insurance that does not cover these screenings and who meet income eligibility requirements. These services are provided in local health centers, doctor’s offices, and hospitals. For more information call 1-866 442 2262.
