St. James Annual Picnic:
The picnic was held last Sunday at the St. Fidelis Friary Boat House, Interlaken. It was a beautiful day and a beautiful location. Many parishioners were in attendance—more than in the past. A special “thank you” to Jacqueline Newhart who planned and organized the event. A “thank you” to Michelle and Tony Humulock who assisted Jacqueline. A “thank you” also to all who attended and provided an abundance of good food. A great event!
Catholic Campaign For Human Development (CCHD):
This collection this weekend provides funding for groups that make lasting change and uplift the poor in the United States. CCHD’s grants improve education, support economic development, and create affordable housing in low-income neighborhoods. In Tompkins County, CCHD funded the start-up of the Tompkins County Workers’ Center, which has served thousands of low wage workers, helping them to recoup wages stolen from them and to address bullying and other unfair treatment in the workplace. Help continue to defend human dignity and build communities of solidarity. Please give to CCHD collection.
Parish Mission:
All parishioners and others, please make plans to attend this mini spiritual retreat. It will be held at St. James the Apostle on the Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday evenings of October 3, 4, and 5 at 7:00 p.m. Rev. William H. Winters, OFM Cap, will be the presenter. Fr. Bill was pastor of Holy Cross and St. Francis Solanus from 2002–2008. During this Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, Fr. Bill received an appointment in February by Pope Francis to be a Missionary of Mercy. Please spread the word. Everyone is invited. As a parishioner do plan to schedule yourself to attend with your family.
Saturday Vigil Mass:
A “thank you” to musicians and singers from the three churches who have volunteered to provide music for the Mass at 5:00 p.m. on Saturdays at St. James. You are appreciated and rejoiced in. The volunteers are temporarily present to foster involvement in the music ministry and invite any parishioner who plays an instrument or sings to join them for practice before Mass at 4:00 p.m.
Ministry Fair:
The Worship Committee of the parish is pleased to announce a Ministry Fair to be held on Saturday and Sunday, October 1–2, at Holy Cross, St. Francis Solanus, and St. James the Apostle. The Ministry Fair will address the needs and encourage parishioners to consider a call to be a liturgical minister, that is, to be an usher, altar server, musician, cantor, lector, extraordinary minister of Holy Communion, etc. By sharing of one’s gifts and time the parishioners of Mary, Mother of Mercy enrich worship and actively engage with members of our congregation and community. Volunteers from various ministries will be available after Mass on October 1–2 to give more information about the current needs of the parish. We invite you to sign up for the ministry that best suits your talents.
St. James the Apostle Church:
• Trumansburg Area Churches (TAC) is sponsoring the Twenty-eighth Annual Crop Hunger Walk on Sunday, October 2, beginning at 1:45 p.m. at the Trumansburg United Methodist Church. Sponsor someone for the walk. You may do so after the Masses at the table set up by volunteers for the Crop Walk. 25% of the funds raised will go to our own Trumansburg Food Pantry.
• Do you like to sing? Come join the Trumansburg Community Chorus! Rehearsals for the fall session will begin on September 19. They meet each Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Jacksonville United Methodist Church, 1869 Trumansburg Road. Alice Ploss, director, has wide experience leading choral musicians of all ages. New members who like to sing are welcome, regardless of formal experience. The fee is $40 for adults and $25 for students. An optional extra $20 would help to purchase music. Scripture Study:
Parishioners are welcome to join an informal study of The Gospel According to Mark. Beginning this Tuesday, September 13, after the 9 a.m. mass at St James the Apostle Church, and will be facilitated by Debbie Short and Camille Taranto. The Liguori Catholic Bible Study will be used. Making Contributions by Check:
The parish of Mary, Mother of Mercy, is yet to be civilly incorporated, therefore checks cannot be made out in that name. For the present time, please make checks out in the name of the church, that is, to St. James the Apostle, or St. Francis Solanus, or Holy Cross.
Don’t Let Your Veggies Grow Up To Be Compost:
Due to poverty, about 1 in 5 kids in our community might not eat a decent meal today. Elderly people and others are affected as well. Altogether, about 14% of our neighbors experience food insecurity. If you have extra produce (fruit, vegetables, and eggs) from your garden or CSA share, please drop it off in the cooler at 94 W. Main Street, Trumansburg on Mondays until October. All food will be donated to local families. Your donation counts! Thank you, Maria Connell.
Magnificat Rochester

Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy:
The origin of the Christian Jubilee goes back to Old Testament times. The Law of Moses prescribed a special year for the Jewish people to make restitution for wrongs committed, to forgive debts owed, and set slaves free. In the Roman Catholic tradition, a Holy Year or Jubilee is a great religious event, for the forgiveness of sins and the punishment due to sin. A Jubilee is a year of reconciliation between adversaries. It is a time of solidarity, hope, justice and commitment to serve God with joy and in peace with our brothers and sisters. The guiding principle of the year: “Be merciful just as your Father is merciful.”

Toiletries and Hygiene Products:
There is a basket in the vestibule of the church for donations of toiletries. The request comes from Catholic Charities which is in need of items like shampoo, toothpaste, diapers etc. The items will be transferred to the Catholic Charities Office in Ithaca.
Cancer Services Program (Cortland and Tompkins Counties):
This a program that provides free cancer screenings (breast, cervical, and colorectal) to women from ages 40–64 and men ages 50–64, who are uninsured or have health insurance that does not cover these screenings and who meet income eligibility requirements. These services are provided in local health centers, doctor’s offices, and hospitals. For more information call 1-866 442 2262.
